Programs Being Blocked From Internet?
Mar 12, 2011
When I try to run certain programs like Anki or Second Life that need access to the internet they're blocked with no message from windows, I've tried deactivating windows firewall and other security programs but I always get the same thing. I've tried creating rules for windows firewall that allow my programs to access the internet but it makes no difference. I know it's not my router or ISP because other computers in my house that use the same connection work fine.

Recently, my Vuze, Moyea FLV downloader, and Amazon Unbox (just installed today) are unable to connect to the internet. I can't even complete the Unbox install because I get an error message every time I try to complete the setup. I've gone through my firewall and added allowances, tweaked settings, everything -- I even turned it off to see if the Unbox install would finish properly. It didn't. I still got the error message telling me that it couldn't connect to the internet. Did I break something in my logs? What's happened, here? Trillian and things like that work fine, it's just these certain programs.

In Zune Software, I can't login to the marketplace/social
In Twhirl (a twitter client) I can't login to receive my feeds
In Picasa (A Photo Managing Software) I can't login to upload photos to a web album
When I try to sync the time server, it can't connect
When I plug in new hardware, Window's can't connect to find drivers
And Lastly, when using Windows Update, I get an infamous '80072EE2' error
So, in short, SOME of my programs keep having their outgoing requests or connections blocked. My internet works fine. When I play games it connects just fine. When I use and IM client it works fine. But for these programs...not so much.
And the worst thing about it is that it's effecting more programs. Picasa and Twhirl we're working last week shortly after I installed Windows 7
Anyways, I've tried a bunch of stuff already:
Disabling Windows Firewall, Enabling it with the specific programs allowed through, disabling anitvirus in addtion to firewall, switich the firewall programs, telling IE to auto-detect my proxy (I have none), going thru cmd prompt and resetting the proxy (still don't have one), system restoring to when I first installed the beta (when Twhirl and Picasa worked) only to have them stop working
Oh, and I connect to my network wirelessly through a Linksys USB-G receiver, which gets the signal from a Netgear router, which is hooked up to a cable modem
So, to say the least, I'm stumped. And if ANYONE could help me out here, it would be AMAZING. So, thanks in advance for any and all suggestions, help, tips, etc.

AIM works fine and the IM chat program in Steam works fine, but the browser for Steam does not, nor does Windows Live Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, Internet Explorer, or Lord of the Rings Online. Many other programs claim they cannot connect to the internet, such as Lavasoft Ad-Aware when it checks for updates, etc.
I use Opera to get online, which works fine. My computer with Windows 7 is connected straight to my 2-Wire modem via ethernet cable, and my laptop with Vista which is connected wirelessly has absolutely no internet issues whatsoever.
I've turned off my firewall, I've checked the exceptions list, I've uninstalled my antivirus, I've turned off Windows Defender, I've checked my LAN settings, I've checked my modem, I've reset the winsock, I've reset the TCP/IP, I've gone through my services in the Windows Management: I've done pretty much everything I know of and nothing works.

Internet works on internet browsers, msn, skype but is limited or does not work on utorrent, webcam chat, all games requiring internet e.g. steam, bf3, starcraft2
I have no idea what the problem is and it use to work fine.
I've recently did a fresh windows 7 install too but no fix.
We have 2 routers connected to the one major router which feeds 7 ppl in the house. Most people use wireless but i use ethernet cable. I tried switching between ethernet and wireless but there was no difference. I tried portfowarding but no luck there. Everyone seems to be fine except me. I use avast AV and have put exclusions in and turned on gaming mode on. Firewall doesn't seem to be the issue here. For utorrent I have the green tick on connections but wont connect to seeds or peers.
Also tried making myself DMZ and turned on and off UPnP

I'm currently running a 64bit Windows 7 Home Premium and recently, programs other than Windows Live Messenger, Skype, and my browser stopped working. Coincidentally, every program that stopped working connects using the internet. My IE Lan settings were already checked as "Do not use a proxy" along with every other browser I use. I tried using MSConfig and turning off everything in the boot menu. I've scanned for Malware using Malwarebytes and I'm currently scanning my computer with AVG. My resident shield for AVG is off, my avast shields are off, and my windows firewall is off.

A friend of mine just bought a new laptop with windows 7 a week ago and has a belkin N150 router. After setting up the network everything was running fine and fast. Internet explorer and frostwire both worked plenty fine, but thats it. Firefox and Opera browsers both say they cannot connect to the internet, nor does the uTorrent program, and when we tried to use the mcafee antivirus from comcast it keeps coming up with an error along the lines of "unable to establish connection".
Well naturally I disabled both windows and the router's firewalls...still no luck. Then I plugged in the ethernet cable directly to the laptop, skipping the router...still no luck. Unless Comcast has some sort of stranglehold on which programs it will allow to use its internet, I believe it to be a windows issue. I have only worked with XP primarily and i know little about Windows 7. What would cause only internet explorer to have connections and leave everything else out?

Most of my programs work fine (Firefox, IE8, Xfire, Halo, etc.); but a lot of the other ones can't seem to access the internet. Windows Live's setup always seems to give me that problem, plus Windows Update and McCafee (!!).
I'm running the .exe's as administrators in computability mode for Vista when needed, but it's still not working. Can anybody fix this please?

I installed Windows 7 on my 64 bit HP machine as an upgrade vs clean install- computer came with Vista and I upgraded to Windows 7 prior to loading programs on it. Norton Internet Security, itunes, Adobe Lightroom, TomTom Home cannot access their servers for updates etc.
I can access internet via IE and get Windows updates via the internet. I tried disabling the Windows firewall, allowing prpgorams access to internet via firewall, tried adv setting in firewall. Nothing worked.
Any suggestions?

I just reformatted my computer and installed Windows 7 64bit. I can access the internet just fine on Google Chrome. I can download at the fastest speed my connection will allow. Some programs, 2 in particular, won't allow connections but others will. Examples are: Ventrilo, and PlayOnline will access the internet, but GSC and Final Fantasy XI will not allow connections. I've gone through the router and opened ports for them, disabled UAC and windows firewall. I do not have any other firewall or virus scanner installed yet as they interfered on previous systems setting up my commonly used programs. I've also tried running the programs as administrator to no avail.

I've had windows 7 for months now on my new computer, but one day programs just seemed to stop working on the internet. First it was chrome, then it was a few games. Occasionally when I restart my computer everything can connect again. But it's starting to be more frequent that I can't. However, skype has managed to connect 100% of the time. I also noticed that it takes quite awhile for the computer to connect to the internet.
So far I've tried making new user accounts, renewing my ip, and uninstalling some new programs, but no luck at all. My antivirus picked up an infection but cleaned it, it's nod32 AV5.
edit: Ran windows 7 help and it found that it can't connect to the DNS server.

so i am running the windows 7 home permium 64bit and i am having quite the problem. none of my programs will open. it seems like the olny thing that will open is internent explorer, paint, actual folders, those kinds of things. nothing else will open such as itunes, malwarebytes to scan for anything, not even flashplayer will open to watch Internet. i've tried starting it in safe mode and still nothing will open. ive run a diagnostic test to see if it was the hardware and everthing checked out okay. i have even tried sfc /scannow command - system file checker and that came back negative. so i am out of ideas.

I posted here a few days ago about some programs not recognizing there was a connection to the internet, and it turned out to be a problem with my DNS servers. It was fixed and everything was working fine until last night when the problem returned. I did an ipconfig /all and it looks exactly the same as it did after I fixed the problem, showing that I'm using google's DNS. This is the current ipconfig /all

On a Laptop with Windows Home Premium (Acer OEM) I have Windows Defender installedThen downloaded AVG Antivirus around 1:st week of August. After the end of trial period AVG asked me if I want to upgrade to paid version or remain using free version with restricted options. I chose to keep the free version. After som days Windows error center recommend me with a Flag to install a Antivirus product and offer a Web page with alternative product. I then wanted to try any other Antivirus product.I decided to try Bullgard Security, downloaded it and then started installation. During installation Bullgard ask me if it first should remove previous security products and listed Windows Defender and AVG as installed or if I want them to remain in the system.
I chose to leave them and get through with the installation and Bullgard then want to restart Windows. During login and start up procedures Bullgard installation program started automatically. Its asked again if I want to first uninstall the other security product. This time I answered Yes and was then asked if I want to uninstall the other product one by one. It then started AVG uninstall program. If You use default options AVG keeps some minimal security detection and remains on the computer. In the tray You see the AVG icon, but because it was in the normally hided section I didn't see that AVG was loaded after the Restart of Windows.Suddenly I couldn't reach any Web pages whit any browser, also I couldn't run installation program that download a part from the net before it could start installation so Bullgard couldn't bee installed.
Window says that I have Internet connection and You can use for instance Windows update and several programs update function. I first used AVG installation file to repair AVG. I then used normal Control Panel - Uninstall for AVG and AVG uninstall program started. I go to advanced options and chose to totally uninstall AVG and delete all user data. I also on another computer downloaded a AVG-tool that detects remaining AVG installation and files and then remove them. It couldn't find any thing. After next restart the http protocol error still remains, I first think it was faulty DNS settings for the network adapter and manually set them as another functional Laptven if I put in IP-address in the browser address field it says it can't reach that page and installation program that want to download parts from the Internet and for instance Spotify says that there is no Internet connection.

I don't really need a firewall (I use a router).
I'm looking just for something that alerts me if a program wants to access Internet (and send out information) and where I have the chance to allow or prevent that (recurring/nonrecurring). is there a small (preferably free ware) program available for this? is this possible and useful with Windows Firewall? if not, what Firewall (especially to manage the outgoing traffic) would you prefer? Thanks a lot!

Well the other day a "friend" put a spyware on my computer and monitored me for a while all because he want me to get a amd crapdozer (coz he HATES intel and thinks amd is actually good) computer. Anyway when he told me he was monitoring me i got pissed so i downloaded like 3 spyware/malware removals (would of put malwarebytes only, but friend decided to block me from doing that) anyway i made a deal with the friend and he decided to remove the spyware. So i decided to remove my extra security software (comodo firewally, pctools spyware doctor i think) and i kept my avast free. While my computer was infected i was playing around with ALOT of settings in comodo fire wall and after installing it my internet has been disconnecting (only in my computer). Now i think that my messing around with comodo has created this problem but im not sure. For example if i want to load google it takes ages and alot of times and after a while it will disconnect.

Frequently programs hang, this seems to manifest itself mainly whilst using internet explorer, allthough sometimes in other programs such as word, suspect a virus , maybe downloaded when I inadvertently forgot to check for extra additions to a required download.

how to deny internet access to all my programs by default? I mean that internet access is completely blocked to my existing programs, files, etc. and to all future programs that I might install or files that may be created.
And ONLY those Programs and Files have access to the internet that I allow and give permission to. P.S. I have Kaspersky Internet Security 2012, but can't seem to figure out the appropriate settings..

Everytime I try to open Internet Explorer, a window comes up then closes as soon as it shows. Like a blink. I've tried reseting the IE settings on the control panel and it still doesn't work. I've also tried system restore and it still didn't work.
There are also some other programs that won't open, like McAfee Internet Security, it opens but it's just comes up as a plain white window. This started happening a couple of days ago, I did a windows update and the problem went away. But then after turning the laptop off and on again, it stopped working again (Can't open internet explorer) and this time, after the update I couldn't connect to the internet.
I don't know how and why this started happening as I'm not the one who uses the laptop, but maybe it's the windows update that did this or I'm thinking maybe McAfee? But I'm not really sure.

I am working on my daughter's Presario CQ 56-115DX Notebook running Windows 7. It has been running erratically and has a lot of junk on it and no anti virus. I have tried to install several free antivirus programs and also a Revo Uninstaller with both IE, Chrome and Firefox. All Downloads are blocked (or automatically "cancelled") including your TSG SysInfo. I turned off the Firewall but that didn't help. I also did a System Recovery back to 1-30-2013 to no avail.
