It's time for me to change HDD. I wanto to go for a fresh Windows 7 x64ultimate instal. Now, I wonder, Can I backup and load something like "control panel settings"? That way I could load them after. On the new Windows 7 installation. Something like:
1) Backup settings
2) Change HDD
3) Mount new HDD
4) Fresh install
5) Load settings.
I'm having an issue with my tower that I built and I'm wondering if starting with a fresh OS installation will do the trick. My current setup is one hard drive for nothing but the OS and programs and multiple other drives to save files to. My issue is that I use the Windows Backup utility to backup the drives that contain important information. If I were to install a fresh copy of the OS, I imagine that the system wouldn't realize that I've performed a backup on the other drives before and would want to do a complete backup all over again rather than being able to do an incremental backup. Is there a way to backup the settings and log files of the Windows Backup utility to move to the new OS? The drive letters and everything else will be the exact same as they are right now. This also makes me curios of how other backup programs behave when the OS has to be reinstalled.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a new desktop running win 7 64bit pro. After doing a fresh install the only thing I did was remove the trial version of Norton AV. Now many pages will not load in either IE9 or chrome. Some pages load but when you try to click on links. Our other laptops on my network can browse the internet without any problems. Pages that load on them will not load on this new desktop.
The desktop is connect to the network via ethernet cable.
I've been able to download and receive windows updates. I was able to download google chrome. I can get to Google but I when I click on the links the pages will not load, it just sets there and never gives me any error.
System SpecsDell Studio 540Intel Q8200Windows 7 64bit Ultimate Edition Retail (came with Vista) I feel kind of dumb not knowing this but here we go. I consider myself very knowledgeable about computers but I'm not sure if there is a utility for what I want to do. My parents computer is having some issues I replaced the hard drive and i used Acronis True Image to copy the hard drive so they wouldn't have to redo all there bookmarks and personal info for there websites and just the general windows settings like wallpaper etc. So since i have done this something just isn't quite right something must of been corrupted from the old hard drive. So anyways I am gonna do a clean install and i was wondering if there is a utility that will allow me to save everyones profiles so that i can just pop in a disk and restore all the settings. I am not worried about any files or programs on the computer I have them all backed up my only concern is windows settings themselves.I just can't figure out how to do this if there even is a way to backup everyones profile settings.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have a drive that was using PGP that has become damaged and will not boot despite trying 3 days of different fixes and repairs. I have a complete drive backup that will restore but when I try and boot after my PGP password I get 'Missing operating system'. Again I have tried decrypting and fixing but to no end.
I have another disk with a working and booting install of Windows 7 (same architecture etc) on. I have the entire contents of the non-booting system disk that I can access from the image of it.
If I booted into something like Windows Recovery or Live Linux environment, can I copy the entire contents of the non-working Windows 7 drive over the working one and expect it to work and then boot?
i have reset my acer laptop back to factory settings but now windows 7 wont load, i can see that it is still there but cannot load it, iv tried system restore installing my recovery disc i made but still cannot get it to load

Tomorrow my new Samsung netbook will be delivered, Windows 7 Starter is preinstalled. I haven't had a netbook before, and I haven't used Windows 7 before.
I'd like to make an image of the HDD immediately after unpacking. I need to play around with Windows 7 and I probably want to remove bloatware. I may even want to install Ubuntu Netbook Edition. But in any case, I'd like to able to restore the original, clean HDD image.
What would be the best strategy to do this? Make an image (using eg. Partition Image) before even starting up Windows 7? Make an image after running Windows 7 once (perhaps it needs to register / validate / activate)? I do not want to get into trouble with multiple activation.
I plan on reformatting Windows 7 x64 due to some hardware issues. Basically, I would like to be able to have things like Windows 7 settings, themes, ect imported. Any tips on how to do this? I do have separate partitions/harddrives to backup files, program data, ect.

View 3 Replies View Relatedim needing to backup some applications, it would make things a whole lot easier when reinstalling windows. isnt there an application where i can either point it to the main executable of a program, or its shortcut in teh start menu and this program will read into the uninstall and grab all the registry data into a file, so that i can save this info along with the directory of teh application itself?
This way i can cut and paste the app over to the new location (another operating system of the same type) then run this application that will spit the registry entries in for the app. Then i can create a shortcut and when i run it i dont want it to complain about any registry problems, etc.
When I try to find Backup and Restore in my computer I fail to find it. I tried to load it using Command Prompt "%SystemRoot%System32control1.exe /name Microsoft.Backupandrestore" and the page shows blank with the note "The page failed to Load" I have Acronis installed on my computer.

While I understand the process of configuring your system for usage of the drive (unplug the other drives so the SSD is only one connected while installing, turning off prefetch, etc).The part I'm confused with is how to move the users folder so it defaults to the "D" drive. I get I can "Move" the folder, Add the "Location" or do the "robocopy" method & create a junction.

I had a problem with my CD key beforehand when trying to activate my Windows 7 Home Premium, saying it was invalid - which by the way is preinstalled by Asus (the manufacturer). The CD key on the bottom of my laptop was apparently invalid. I didn't really have the time to phone up Microsoft and sort that out so left it. Also I did not think (stupidly) to back up my files. How do I go about doing this restore? I have some games installed too - Battlefield 3 (I have the disc), Crysis 2 (direct download from EA), Skyrim (disc) and Dead Space (Steam). Will these games be reinstallable - Crysis 2 in particular, as it said something about backing up the files for the game after downoading it from EA (I again didn't sigh). Will they just let me redownload it? Also will the CD keys still work? Also how do I back up the saves for Crysis 2?
View 3 Replies View RelatedFor years, I have kept most of my data on a drive/partition other than C drive. Let's call this other data drive/partition, D drive.
With the frequent install of Windows 7 builds, I started changing the location of My Documents, My Pictures, and My Music to D drive as I've done for years, but I even went ahead and mapped the location of Desktop, Favorites, Searches, etc to the D drive as well.
The benefit of this is I didn't have to physically copy/move this data before doing a clean install, I just had to go in and change the default locations to the appropriate D drive paths/locations after a clean install. This is a bit of work and is tedious, but less work than moving data, etc.
I've had my kids computer dual-booting Windows XP & Windows 7 for months as well. In Windows 7, that computer has an account for me (admin purposes) and four more accounts for our four kids. Now, imagine the tedious work of manually changing the locations for My Documents, Desktop, etc in Windows 7 for all 5 accounts on that computer.
I would like to think that there is some way of backing up the location settings for My Documents, My Music, My Pictures, Desktop, etc for each account, maybe even backup the settings for the custom Start Menus, Desktop Wallpaper, and so on.
Has anyone seen a way of backing up these settings manually, using a 3rd party utility, or using some Microsoft admin tool?
I recently purchased a new hard drive, and to this point have been utilizing Macrium only for backup images.
What I'm trying to do is copy a working image of my old hard drive including the OS Xp, to the new hard drive, but the pc won't boot with the copy installed on the new hard drive!
I've just made a new fresh install of Windows 7 - 64bits (legal version). Everything was fine, all drivers were up to date.But, when I install updates from Windows Update, during the installation of the SP1 (when the screen is "do not turn off the computer"), the computer reboots, and it said that it occurs a BSOD !? I've seen nothing. According to Whocrashed, it's because of BAD_POOL_HEADER, from ntoskrnl.exe (which belongs to Nvidia I think) and e1c62x64.sys (for Intel LAN)... After reboot, Windows continues slowly its updates like everything was OK... but I wonder is that SP1 & updates have been compromised (poorly done, half or what) 'cause of this BSOD? Should I reformat the computer?Windows Update indicates that all these updates were successful...

I have done 3 fresh installs of Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit retail using all up to date drivers and everything, I have tried with CPU overclocked and normal clock. When I boot up she runs fine and then when I start listening to music off of my backup drive or browse the internet she will lock up at random, and by lock up I mean it is like im looking at a picture of my screen frozen with no responsiveness whatsoever not even the mouse moving no HDD activity ... nothing! View 1 Replies View RelatedThis PC has ran fine since 2008 when it was built. It was recently updated to Windows 7 Pro OEM. During the OS upgrade it had more memory added (4x2GB, all slots filled). Upgrade and install went flawlessly. All software (photoshop, premiere, firefox, antivirus) was re-installed without any errors or hick-ups. Upon updating firefox (I believe the timing was co-incidence) it Blue Screened. It has had issues ever since. So my last stitch effort was to back everything up and re-install Windows and hope that it fixed the problem. Needless to say that it hasn't been fixed and it still randomly blue screens. Windows Memory Diagnostic ran with no errors returned
View 3 Replies View RelatedBought a new computer 2 weeks ago, came in 3 days ago. Been having trouble with it since. Usually I'm the "Mr. Fix-it" when it comes to PC's but I've never messed around with any debugging tools.
I've tried all the troubleshooting you can possibly do when trying to diagnose a blue screen of death. Tried both RAM sticks separately, took the video card out and used on-board video. I even tried both RAM sticks with on-board video separately. Unplugged the DVD-ROM, no avail. I called ASRock and got a technician who I could barely understand, but was telling me something about "XMP". I didn't see the XMP option under the DRAM configuration, even if my sticks don't support it wouldn't the option still be there? I think he has my motherboard confused with another one. He told me to either replace the RAM with new RAM or send the motherboard back in and exchange it.
I came here to see what the BSoD DMP files REALLY have to say the problem is, so I can solve it once and for all. I didn't pay for new hardware to let it sit here and collect dust.

Ive ran memtest86 4.0a and i found several million errors. So i scanned through 1 and 1 ramslot to try to determine which ram was giving the errors, this only resulted in 1 of my 4 ram had only 1 error? I found this weird so i thought it might be the DIMM thats corrupted.
So now i removed 3 of my rams and i only run with 1 which passed the test. Still i get unexpected shutdowns aka BSOD.
Ive tried to remove my SSD and only use my HDD back and forth , changing to IDE inside BIOS, but with no good results at all..
Ive also tried to change my PSU to a different brand, but all volts seems ok.
I also reinstalled windows with USB, CD, from HDD yeah you name it, different versions... etc.. i even tried to install Windows 8 but with the same result
This all actually just started out of the blue, i have no clue how but i didnt install anything , all of the sudden i started having connection problems which resulted in BSOD.
They used to have more of a 'restore disk' but lately I haven't been seeing that anymore. What are users left to do when you need to do a fresh install of Windows? If its for someone else, could I use my windows install disc and use their product key (sticker on bottom)? I've heard that it doesn't always work that way? Does Microsoft have any official documentation about this and if possible, could you share your experiences?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm putting together a HTPC using a ASUS E35M1-I Deluxe (AMD Zacate mobo/cpu combo), 30GB Kingston SSD, and 4Gb Crucial DDR3 1066.Problem is when I boot from the Windows install disk I get the "Windows is Loading Files" status bar but when it gets the end it just hangs there. Usually it boots right into the next Windows loading screen. So before I start troubleshooting I want to make sure there's nothing special I need to do with the SSD before installing Windows. Its a brand new drive but I'm pretty certain during the installation process there's a Format option. The Windows install disk was burned from an ISO using IMG Burn at 16x. Before I left for work I started another burn (with img verification) at 8x. But I'm not certain that will help. I've burned plenty of images at 16x speeds without issue.
View 7 Replies View RelatedA few days ago, all out of the blue, my PC started to freeze - at that time with VISTA installed. I tried to restart and it froze again, just after a couple of minutes. Tried again, again, again and again. With the same result. Without getting any further I tried to install Windows 7 to get my PC up and running again. Formatted all of partitions to get a fresh and clean start. and it froze again, within a couple of minutes. Now I suspect it may be caused by a hardware problem? What is there to do? What can I do? I`m far from a PC-expert, I HP is somewhere between 1-3 years old I think, and I`ve never encountered this problem before, on this PC or any other.

I used my installation CD that was good for only one PC. So to activate Win 7 on that 2nd PC I need to buy another copy of the OS. Do most laptops come with an OEM Windows 7 disc? I'd like to be able to do a fresh install and wipe all of the junk that will inevitably be pre-installed on the laptop. I've even heard of junk software that is somehow intertwined with the Windows installation that forces the user to update drivers, etc. only through the software itself; sometimes it doesn't even allow the latest drivers. I'd like to avoid all of this and work with the barest possible system and build it up myself.
If Windows 7 discs sometimes do not come, I'm assuming that I will have a valid OEM serial that is tied to a plain copy of Windows 7 (that is, not riddled with laptop software). Would I be able to download a copy off of Microsoft's site and input that serial when I'm prompted?
