Refuses To Accept Selected Program To "Open With"
Feb 26, 2011I'm having trouble assigning the default program to open certain files on my 64-bit 7 Home Premium machine. I previously had a program called Vesta which I used, and that was fine. The path was something like C:Program Files (x86)VESTAvesta.exe Then when I discovered there was a 64-bit version of Vesta available, I removed my old version and replaced it with the 64-bit version, now sitting in C:Program FilesVESTAvesta.exe
Now I'm trying to reset my .cif files to open with the new Vesta. Not surprisingly, vesta.exe has disappeared from the list of available programs to "Open With", because it no longer exists at the original path. But when I browse to the new vesta.exe in Program Files and select it, nothing happens - it just completely ignores my selection, with no message. I can Browse and select any other .exe program as normal, but there is no way I can assign Vesta as the default program. So, it must have something to do with the fact that the new vesta.exe has the same name as the old one, but a different path.
It seems like I somehow need to reset a hidden "Open With" app path list that Windows is keeping somewhere. Does anyone know how I could get at such a list - is it in the registry maybe? (At the same time it would be nice to remove all the random .exe's I added to the list while I was experimenting...)

May 7, 2011I have used HyperTerminal 6.3 on several XP laptops. I have a new desktop with Windows 7, installed HyperTerminal to monitor a USB bridge application (COM3), but get "another program is using selected telephone device" when USB is connected. SO, I can't communicate with it.

Researching, I know this is a Java thing. Feb 25, 2012I have been using a program called Raw Therapee. I downloaded a new version and on installing it quit saying the old version must be removed. I could not find it listed in Revo Unistaller Pro, so I did a forced uninstall with the location of the main executable. This removed a lot of stuff. I checked the program folder and the folder and many files were still there, so I deleted them. I did a CCleaner in between and after. I then unhide and show system files and deleted the folders in the Appdata of main user and admin account, couldn't find it anywhere else.
CCleaner again and reboot. Went to install the new version again and it claimed that the old version was still installed. I did a search for *aw The* and found an entry in the hidden Program Data Folder. In the Admin account it will not let me in this folder to delete any remnants of the old version of Raw Therapee.

Jun 2, 2011My girlfriend recently lent me her laptop (Windows 7 32bit) it was still using IE so when I go to install chrome the built in 'security program' (Windows 7 internet security 2011 or something like that) tells me that chrome is a threat and wont let me use it.. How Do You Remove Run As Administrator From A Program
Oct 16, 2009I set up a program to "RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR" by right clicking on the program .exe (and/or the program Shortcut) and checking the "run as administrator" option under the compatability tab...to see if the program would run any better.
After evaluation, I decided that the "run as administrator" option was probably not necessary for the program, so I went in and removed the checkbox....thinking that the program would no longer use the "run as administrator" option.
I was evidently wrong, or I did something wrong, because the program still shows the little "administrator" shield thingy on the icon, and it still gives me a popup verifying that I want it run as administrator.
I tried this with several different programs, and I get the same thing...when I want to remove the administrator privs, the program still pops up and asks to run as administrator.
Am I going about this the wrong way?? or am I missing something here??
I "skipped" Vista and went right to Windows 7 x64 Ultra from XP, and I have for the most part been very happy with the new OS. I am still getting a feel for it though.
Examples: I was trying to solve a problem with the game Left-4-Dead..so I took some advice from these forums and "ran as administrator". I have since solved the problem, and I would like to stop running the program as administrator.

Nov 20, 2011After downloading an update of the Adobe lens corrector program from lab.adobe.com I now have the unwanted ask.com search program. This program acts as the default search engine in both Explorer and Firefox when using speech recognition software to initiate a search. Ask.com is not listed with any of the search programs, and is not listed as a program or a plug-in in Windows 7. I even tried restoring Windows 7 to an earlier date but ask.com program still remains in the computer. It does not show up under a malware to search. I would like to get rid this unwanted piece of crap but I don't know how.
