No Wireless On Windows 7?
Oct 17, 2010
I've just bought a new Samsung N130 netbook, running Windows 7, but can't connect to the internet through a Netgear DG834GT wireless router/modem. This is the first computer I've used with windows 7, so I'm a bit unfamiliar with the settings, etc, so be gentle with me. It's fine with a wired connection, but when I try to go wireless I can't connect. We have other laptops/netbooks in the house, running XP, and they get on line fine.

In a few days time I will be changing my ISP in the UK from Sky to BT.
BT are providing me with their newest wireless router free of charge as part of the deal and I'll be using that to set up my wireless network, which will consist of an HP Pavilion desktop, a Toshiba laptop, a Sony Vaio laptop, an HP wireless printer and a Samsung HDTV.
This means my Sky wireless router is surplus to requirements, so I was wondering if I could convert it to a wireless access point to improve the range of my BT wireless network.
I've read a couple of supposedly easy-to-understand articles on Google and have to say they left me more confused than ever.

Is there a way to setup your computer to connect only to a specific wireless router in your area? I live in a college dorm and there are a lot of wireless connects available so I'm thinking that there might be complications with my computer with all the information in the air.

I have had this problem not being able to turn on the wireless radio for months. I have to get it turned on now. When I press <fn> F5 I can see the wireless radio is off. I see the power on button. When I select the power on button nothing happens. I expect the wireless radio to power on.I have tried fixing the winsock. I have run this MS fix at: How to determine and to recover from Winsock2 corruption in Windows Server 2003, in Windows XP, and in Windows Vista And I have run this bat file
** Start of bat file called renew-ip-reset-winsock.bat
ipconfig /release

I have a Dell Inspiron 1520 Laptop and stuck windows 7 RTM 32 bit on it. All was well but now connecting wirelessly is slow. Like slower then 56k modem slow. I have a Dell 802.11n wireless mini card installed that works PERFECTLY under windows XP. I was getting 80 % signal strength under Win 7 and getting 1 mbps where as in XP I was getting 78 to 100 mbps with the same signal strength. Oh and ethernet works perfectly fine.
For a time I was able to download the corresponding vista driver from dell and then replace the driver that win 7 automatically installs for it, then flipped the card switch off and on and it would work like it should for a while, but then reverted to the same slow network speeds once the laptop was reset or turned off and on. Now flipping the switch or re-installing doesn't work either. I've tried resetting the router, no go and none of my other computers or products have a problem with it. I've tried doing a few things suggested in other posts, like assigning a static ip, disabling ipv6, etc... Nothing has worked.
I'd love someone who knows what it may be or has heard of this precise problem, although I think I may be stuck waiting until Win 7 makes it debut in Oct and until Dell releases a proper 7 driver for it.
Laptop: Dell Inspiron 1520
Wireless Card: Dell brand mini draft 802.11n card
Router: DLink DGL-4500 draft 802.11n
Windows 7 32bit RTM

I have three PCs that connect to my home network wireless and two others that connect wired through a hub. Periodically one of the wireless PCs will see the other wireless devices but not the wired ones. This morning I installed some Win 7 updates and after the restart my laptop can't see the wired devices. My wife's Win 7 laptop sees everything. So the problem is intermittent. I have fiddled with Advanced Settings in Network Sharing, such as turning Network Discovery off and back on again. I can't seem to find the silver bullet that will cure this problem when it occurs.

Using Laplink, PCMover, I migrated all of my files, apps, etc, from my old Dell laptop (windows XP Home Edition) to my new Toshiba Satellite L755-S5169 laptop, running on Windows 7. The transfer went fine, except, every time I try to go online, there is no wireless connection. I have to go through several steps to get on our wireless network, but, it fails again on reload. I cannot get online, yet, my old computer and our other laptop both get on our wireless quickly and easily. I want to put my old laptop away and rely on the new one, but

In XP, if one is playing something over the network on a wireless connection, there are usually (always?) little dropouts every so often caused by Wireless Zero Configuration service. So once its connected, simply disabling the service causes those dropouts to go away and playback is smooth and steady.Well, in Windows 7 I have those same dropouts over wireless but, no Wireless Zero Configuration service to disable. So what is the equivalent or what needs to be done to make it quite checking the connection so that playback will be as smooth as it is with XP?I've tried disabling a couple of sevices that were associated to wireless (WLAN Autoconfig) but so far I've only managed to completely bonk the connection.

my connection to my work's wireless network was fine.
Last night, I installed driver software for my network card for my Ubuntu OS (dual-boot machine). Ubuntu and W7 are on separate partitions; I am not running Ubuntu inside of Windows. This morning when I came into work and booted into windows, it did not connect to the network. I have already updated the driver software through device manager (I already had the most current driver installed) and have downloaded the correct drivers from Dell's website.
I have also done a system restore to prior to last night's Ubuntu driver update. And that didn't work. At this point, I am connected via cable, but if I remove it, my wireless card will not see our wireless network. I have tried to manually create our network through the "Set up a new connection or network" with the correct SSID and security code, but that did not work either.
How could my work on the Ubuntu side have affected the performance of my network card or settings on my Windows 7 side? I can connect to a wireless network in Windows?

I have a Lenovo T60 which has been on XP for some time now and I decided to wipe it and put Windows 7 Ultimate on. However on Windows 7 the wireless just drops out when I take it into my living room, it didnt do this on XP!So I put the HDD back in with XP on, I set a ping going to the router with the laptop upstairs next to the router, I walked downstairs into the living room, which isn't that far away, and although the response time increased there were no ping time outs.

With security set to WPA-P2k on XP, Laptop cannot find the Access point (i.e. TP Link Router). Both PCs have same Workgroup and the network setup has been transferred from the XP to the Laptop. WindowsXP works fine - why not the Laptop?

Every time I boot the PC I have to re-enter my wireless connection settings as it forgets them from the previous session. I do this by going to Manage wireless networks in the Network and sharing center and clicking Add - Manually create a network profile. Then complete the rest of the form including both tick boxes (start automatically and even if not broadcasting). Then it all connects fine. But when I turn off and reboot I go back into Manage wireless networks and my network is no longer there. Extra info:Running Win 7 x64 professional.Using a nano Edimax wireless usb dongle. The network I connect to has WEP security and has a hidden SSID.My previous network from another router I cant delete from Manage wireless networks. It disappears till I reboot then its there again.I can only connect to the network by adding it manually. If I try and connect using the icon on the toolbar and selecting 'Other network' then entering the SSID and password it wont connect.

For the past few weeks I have been having problems with my HP laptop.
For starters my laptop will not restart. I try to restart it and it shuts down, but won't reboot all of the way. It gets stuck on the black screen you get just before the HP sceens comes up. So I have to press the power button ( after which I do, I get a loud POP sound before the computer shuts off ) and then turn it on again myself. Also, if my computer goes in to sleep mode due to inactivity, it will not wake up. I have to press the power button to turn it off, and then start it up again.
After this happens, my laptop cannot detect any networks. I have to unplug the charger, and then I have to take out the battery and put it back in before it detects networks.
I took it to best buy ( where I bought the computer and have a warranty at ) and they did a diagnostic test and determined that I had several viruses causing the problems. After paying 200 bucks they ''fixed'' my computer and I brought it home, only to have the same exact problems I was having before.

Windows 7 does not remember/save wireless networks even though I check "connect automatically" when I connect. In the Manage Wireless Networks control panel ONLY the current wireless network I connected to is ever listed. If I connect to another wireless network then that previous network is gone from the list.
P.S. - I'm running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit
