No Login Prompt On Boot Up?

Sep 6, 2011

I encountered this problem today when I restarted my computer. When I boot up my screen is black for 10 seconds the the logon screen comes on but there is no login box with my user account picture and password box. There is only the windows 7 ultimate at the bottom the accessibility button and the power button. I think this problem is caused by me changing my logon background using this tool Link

Ctrl+alt+del Pressed, No Password Prompt: Unable To Login

Aug 9, 2011

my issue is as follows:

->Win 7 Pro
->Boots up shows "press ctrl+alt+del" screen
->Once this is pressed, the prompt for the password does not show (mouse moves not frozen)
->Unable to recover from rescue cd

After toiling with this issue for some time I found that when the computer is shut down properly, the next login does not show the password prompt. If the computer is shut down via a 5 second power-button press, the password prompt appears the next time the computer is turned on after the "start widows normally" dos screen. I had an older image of the os on a harddrive (replaced HD with solid state) that I used to "restore" from. The issue happened again some 6 days later. I can not keep restoring/backing up all the time as it is very time consuming (there is a lot of changing data on this computer and having to back up like this all the time is not a realistic solution).

Strange Defult Login User Prompt - Local Admin, Not Domain User?

Format HDD From Command Prompt / X Drive Or Boot Volume

Dec 3, 2012

So I am wiping my hard drive by booting with the Windows disk and going to command prompt. I successfully formatted drive C:, about 100 MB of system files and D:, about 500 GB or the bulk of my hard rive. These were the same hard drive, but separate partitions apparently. In Windows it just appears as C: altogether hiding the system files so you don't do something stupid. After I had cleared those two drives, I thought everything was gone until I remembered that it started me out in X:sources. I went back to it and was like what the heck is this? I went to the root directory, X: and typed dir for directory. There was an executable setup file, and four directories including the "sources" one, Program files, Windows, and Users. The whole drive was about 30,000,000 bytes which is I guess 30 MB. It's volume label was called "Boot". I tried to format it, and it said "Cannot format. This volume is write protected." What is this X: drive and is there a command to remove the write protection? Also, what would happen if I did eliminate this data? Could I still install Windows back from the DVD or would that not be possible without those them?

Boot From A Disk To Text Mode With A Command Prompt?

Sep 29, 2010

trouble is, the Repair Disc is useless. All it does is "Load Files", then the hard drive light blinks for what seems like forever, then a mouse cursor on a black screen, and then. well, nothing. I've unplugged everything but the mouse, keyboard and monitor and still nothing. No matter what I do, nothing. Safe mode, recovery, last known good--all do the same thing. The computer boots Ubuntu with no problem, and I can even see the Windows files. (Is that partition supposed to be 'bootable'? It isn't.) Ubuntu tells me there are errors with the $mft whatever that is.

I just don't get it. When I boot from a disc, I expect the machine to boot FROM THE DISC!What is the machine doing for an hour? Every operating system I've ever had could boot from a disk to text mode with a command prompt. All I want to do is fix the mbr or partition table or run chkdsk and see what the problem is. Why won't the repair disk do ANYTHING?I had to replace my motherboard after it burned out, so the discs from the manufacturer are no use. I'll have to buy a new Windows 7 and reinstall

Unable To Login After Boot-up?

Sep 10, 2011

We have Windows seven installed on on my friends system and he is unable to log in because all he has is a black screen with no where to log in. At first I though he came across some pirated software but thats not the case here. Have cd keys that turn out to be legit. So on his login in page at start up all he has is the start up and shut down buttons on the bottom right of the screen and the ease of access button on the bottom left and in between is the Windows Seven wording. No place to enter login info. Have only one restore point that I can find and that is one I created when I first started on his system.I have also tried a system repair with no luck more than once and cannot do a sfc /scannow because the system reports back to me that there is a repair in process and I need to shut down and restart to complete that repair and then run a sfc /scannow which have tried several times shutting down and restarting with the same results ! Have run the repair from the installation and from the install disk till I have sorta lost hope and will have to revert back to a full installation again. Anyone have any Idea's or atleast point me in some right direction maybe it will help to know the location of the registry entries for the login screen and compare with my system. Just a guess.

Windows 7 Won't Boot - Stalls Before Login/welcome Screen

Dec 16, 2012

A custom RT7Lite disc was used and a lot of tweaking has been done, so the system is well in need of a fresh format. Unfortunately, this was planned for after the holidays, and as I was unprepared for this crash, it could take me longer to figure out what I need to transfer to a new install then it would to fix the current one.

System specs:

OS: Windows 7 Pro x64
CPU: Intel Q9550
Motherboard: Gigabyte EP45-DS4P
Memory: 8GB PC2-8000
Graphics Card: ATI HD4870 (PCIe/512MB)
System Drive: 2x Intel x25-V SSDs in RAID0 (via mainboard's ICH10R)
Network: Intel Gigabit CT PCIe card
Firewall: Outpost Pro
The current problem:

System passes POST, bootloader, "Windows is Starting" animation. USB devices initialize, and the mouse pointer appears. The screen remains black (no background, login dialog, accessibility/power buttons, etc.) indefinitely. The mouse still moves and NumLock can be toggled, so the system has not halted - it just doesn't get any further than that. After 15 minutes power-saving kicks in and the display goes to sleep - Moving the mouse or pressing a key turns it back on again as though everything is normal, but it's still stuck at the black screen.Events leading up to this:I have been using a PCIe JMicron-based SATA card with a broken eSATA port, and I recently got an ASM1061-based SATA 6Gbps card to replace it. This new card is PCIe 2.0 and my motherboard only has two 2.0 slots - the x16 and x8 slots meant for video - so I was testing what difference it made running my gfx card in x8 mode. I decided running it this way was OK, so I started tweaking the SATA card. I had seen reports that using the generic Microsoft driver with this chipset was hugely detrimental to write performance, so naturally I tried to install the newest ASM one. This didn't work, as Windows told me "this location does not contain information about your hardware". I resorted to using the driver's installer program, which ran perfectly - but Windows kept using its own driver anyway.

Finally, I decided to try the older version of the ASM driver. This installed properly and the device was no longer listed as a generic ATA controller. On a hunch, I tried updating the driver again (without rebooting) to the newest driver, and Windows accepted it with no complaint this time. However, my firewall (Outpost) asked me whether I wanted to allow direct disk access to an uncertified/??? driver. I affirmed this as it was intended. It's worth mentioning that Outpost was being a nuisance when I was testing PCIe slots, as it wiped its configuration file each time I moved my NIC. This meant it lost all the rules regarding which system components were allowed to do what, and had me confirm each one.

I then rebooted to MS-DOS on a USB stick to update the SATA card's firmware. I restarted into Windows several times without issue, but the SATA card didn't show during POST or in the Device Manager. Turns out the uploader mislabelled a BIOS OROM module as the add-on card's firmware. Back in DOS, I flashed the correct/original file, but the card still didn't seem to work (no BIOS info page, still absent in Windows) so I went back and flashed it a third time. After that theBIOS splash screen re-appeared and it seemed like everything would be fine.

However, upon booting into Windows, I was now getting a consistent BSOD: STOP 0x00000024 0x0000000000190494 (I only have the first two numbers, which I googled on my phone out of curiosity). I rebooted to safe mode and the same BSOD came up after CLASSPNP.SYS was listed. At this point I inserted my Windows DVD and ran the Startup Repair function, which took a while but completed successfully. I checked the log after it was done and the only reported issue was that the 100MB System Reserved partition was "corrupt". After restarting, the BSOD is gone but I now have this black screen/no login issue.
Things I have tried:

-Pretended the login screen was there (entered password and pressed Enter) in case it was a graphical glitch.

-System restore is disabled so I can't use that to revert whatever caused this.

-Tried booting in each of Windows' alternate modes (VGA, Safe, Safe w/LAN, Safe w/CMD, Last Known Good, etc.), problem persists.

-Unplugged secondary display in case it was drawing stuff on the wrong monitor.

-Shuffled the expansion cards back to where they were when the problem started, tried alternate locations, booted with all cards removed.

-Opened a command line window from the Windows 7 DVD and ran SFC and scandisk. SFC reported there were several errors that could not be repaired, however this was also the case several weeks ago when I used SFC to troubleshoot an application. I'm fairly certain this can be blamed on the RT7lite'd install source.

-Booted into an old install of Vista x64 Ultimate on another drive, and replaced all instances of the ASM drivers with the older version. No change. Went back into Vista and renamed the driver files - no change.
Brainstorming:

-Non-destructive "Upgrade" install over existing version Has to be done from within Windows 7. Tried initializing this from Vista, but it seems it can only be installed over the currently active partition (and can't be done anyway because Ultimate trumps Professional.)

-This xbootmgr tutorial helped me narrow the timing of the problem down, it seems to be happening in the SMSSInit phase of MainPathBoot... Knowing this hasn't really helped me so far and it appears xbootmgr has to be initialized from the OS being traced, so I'm not sure if I can even use this tool.

-The automatic Startup Repair script (on the installation disc) reports that the system booted successfully. Running SFC without the /offwindir and /offbootdir switches reports that a system repair is pending. The bootloader lists the OS as "Windows 7 (recovered)"

Keyboard / Mouse Works On Boot But Not Login?

Jan 12, 2012

trying to recover from a system crash here.. One of the issues was me not being able to install/uninstall microsoft antivirus, since it seems some files were deleted which it needed. I tracked that issue to yet another issue what windows installer could not start, which suggested me to check if it was enables in Msservice.exe, which I couldn't start either. After some googling, I found a fix on MS website, which moved some dll around and asked me to reboot PC. After doing so, it stopped recognizing my keyboard and mouse (both usb) at the login screen, they are completely dead even thou they work on boot and in bios (and are detected in bios).I tried to restoring to the point before the "fix", but same issue.

Boot Into Safe Mode - Cannot Get Administrator Icon To Login

Feb 10, 2011

We have a laptop at work that was never put on the network by my predecessor. It's running Windows 7. Basically, the person who used this laptop has now left and moved abroad. As he was the only user of the computer, nobody has his password, and there is data on there that is important and vitally required. I am trying to log on as Administrator, but when I boot into Safe Mode, the Administrator icon is not there as I'd expect. So I thought I'd try and boot into Safe Mode with Command Prompt, and run net user administrator /active:yes. But I'm still presented with the normal welcome screen with just the one user icon, so can't do that either. How I get the administrator icon so I can logon?

The thing is, I think I might have accidentally deleted something in RegEdit, and now my computer (on the ultra rare occasion that it gets to and past the login screen) will tell me that it has encountered a critical error, and will restart in 1 minute. When it does reboot, what will happen, is it will get to the picture of the swirling Windows symbol, but then reboot before making it to login screen. Then it will ask me to do a system repair or start up normally, because it shut down unusually

Random Freezes During Boot Process Before Login (black Screen)

Jul 10, 2012

My systems sometimes freezes during the boot process and all I get is black screen.

This happens when the error occurs:
BIOS shows up normally
Window 7 logo is shown for a brief second
black screen

With boot details enabled, I see that drivers are getting loaded until classpnp.sys. After that the screen goes black as well and the system hangs.

Now when I turn on the machine, I get a text screen asking me whether to start normally or run a recovery attempt. Usually starting normally is all it takes and Windows boots up fine. Once Windows is up and running, it's rock solid. No lockups, no BSODs or whatsoever.

Unfortunately I have no idea how to get debug details of this part of the boot process (os loader phase?).

I already switched the SATA Ports, switched to a different brand and even switched to mSATA. So I'm pretty sure it's not the SSD. Using Windows SATA drivers or Intel RST doesn't make a difference either btw.

Hardware :
Motherboard : Intel DN2800mt, latest BIOS (156)
Graphic Card : GMA 3650 (recent drivers)
CPU : Cedar Trail Atom @ 1,8GHz
Ram : 4 GB - Corsair 1333 MHz
SSD: Crucial M4 64 GB in AHCI mode, latest FW (000f)

HDMI Works From Cold Boot To Login Screen Then Vanishes

This is on a loptop Meldon E6882, running windows 7, to a LED TV HD. From a cold boot both the laptop monitor and HDMI screen show the windows starting screen .. I have tried from the 'screen resolution' page to get automatically detect the HDMI - No luck I have tried from the 'screen resolution' page to manually select HDMI. Only offers VGA or component, no HDMI.

I think this maybe a disabled driver as I did a manual disabling of these some time ago in order to try and reduce the boot time. I cannot recall the names of the drivers I have put into manual start (some time ago), nor have I found any info on what drivers are needed for the HDMI. The screen driver is an Intel(R) HD Graphics 3000. I'd like to look at some video on the larger screen...

Black Screen Of Death During Boot, Before Login Screen

Mar 18, 2012

While attempting to restore a previous backup of my system (with Norton Ghost 15), I got an error, and the system rebooted. Upon reboot, I get the black screen of death with just the cursor instead of the usual login screen. I have tried the following thus far: These all give me the black screen of death with movable cursor:boot in safe mode boot in safe mode with networking boot in safe mode with command prompt last known good configuration I did an initial system startup repair which went through and said it repaired it, rebooted, but no change. I did a pre-boot diagnostic test - nothing memory test - nothing tried restoring from restore point, but it says I don't have any (LIES! BLASPHEMY!) tried restoring from restore point on external disk - seemed okay, then failed. chkdsk - found some stuff, fixed it, no change. tried ctrl+alt+del on black screen of death - nothing

Now, I know that the hard drive itself is alright, that is, the information is still all there still. While I can't give you exact specs, I can tell you that I am on a Dell Studio XPS running Windows 7 home premium 64 bit. I'm at a loss as to what else to do. Despite being a black screen, with just a movable cursor, the system still appears to be running, as every few minutes, it will show the "thinking" cursor, where it shows the little circle next to the arrow.
