Windows 7 Laptop Cannot Access Drive From WinXP Machine Via USB Drive Dock?
Oct 13, 2012Background: I have a WinXP desktop machine with a hard drive that may have a virus/trojan/rootkit/etc. Normal scans on the WinXP machine with MSE or ThreatFire have not discovered the problem. But the best way to scan a drive is to remove it and treat it as a purely 'dummy' data drive plugged into a usb drive dock and run the scan from a clean machine. This way any infected programs and/or O.S. on the drive will have no control to mask or hide themselves. My other computer is an HP Windows 7 laptop. So I removed the hard drive from the WinXP machine and via the USB drive dock and the Windows 7 laptop saw the WinXP drive icon appear. It ran well, and I mainly used it for the internet; however a few days ago I tried to insert a Blank Disc in the drive so I could burn a home-video onto it. However the computer didn't read it. Nothing happened. I went into my Computer and it wasn't there. So I reinserted the blank disc into my mother's computer, which is an XP Computer, and it worked fine. Baffled, I thought nothing of it until today, when I tried to insert a PC game I brought. The computer started up, as though it was going to run - then nothing happened. I went back into My Computer, and no DVD/CD Drive showed up, no autorun...it didn't read the disc.

Oct 27, 2011The drive on my laptop when down so I got a new one and since I have 7 on a disk thought I would put it on the new drive. So I plugged in my drive when to bios set the boot order to go from the CD/DVD rom first and a screen came up that said bootmgr missing hit ctr-alt-del. So I tried using the recovery disks that came with the computer and the same think, it won't boot from the rom drive. So I put the drive in my PC and it showed up fine and worked perfectly. So I was wondering can I plug the laptop drive into my PC and install windows 7 on it while it is plugged into my pc without messing up the windows that is installed on my PC? When I put the 7 disk in my PC it shows up just fine like it should so I was wondering if this is possible or if it would hurt anything on my PC?

Sep 28, 2012First, the information as it is. I had a hard drive issue that I'm working on currently, trying to recover I suppose what is a crashed hard drive. There are tons of errors on it, but that's not the question I have right at the moment, but some background.
I have tried to reinstall Windows on a brand new 2.5" Seagate 500GB 7200rpm HDD. I formatted the drive using the windows 7 ultimate installer and booted it using a USB booter made from the windows 7 download tool.
When I booted it up and tried to get it going, it gave me a hardware error saying "Windows wasn't able to configure the hardware and try startup repair" or something to that effect. I read around and it said that since my BIOS says the HD is in raid configuration that it needed some Intel Raid driver, which I installed and tried running, but it didn't seem to work. It says now "windows cannot repair this computer automatically". The problem signature is as follows:

Sep 28, 2011I am trying to moved everything---program files as well as data files---from one laptop to another. The source is XP, the destination Windows 7 Home Premium 64. From what (little) I understand, most imaging programs clone everything, including the XP register and boot drive. But how can you then boot the Windows 7 machine to run the programs that were originally instaled in XP?I know I can just drag over the data files and re-install all the software, but I am not sure I will live long enough to complete that task.

This failed miserably and I formatted the entire laptop after taking a back up of the Recovery file. Now I have installed Win XP and I do not have any drivers. Now I want to install the Win 7 from the Recovery files. It is in WIM format. When I extracted (using 7z) it is around 13.2 GB. This folder does not have a setup.exe. Has a folder structure starting with "1". Inside I have folders like "Windows", "Documents and settings", "Program Files","Users", "Drivers","Boot" etc. I have both the extract folder as well as the WIM file. I have only USB drive.

Nov 1, 2012I have a pioneer blueray writer drive installed in my Sony Vaio laptop. I'm on holiday and brought some DVD's with me to watch in the evenings. I have watched several since arriving but tonight when I tried to play one nothing happened. I checked in device manager and it reports that the drive is working properly but when I checked device region I found that it was set to region 1 instead of region 2. When I try to switch to region 2 I get the following error message;"Unable to update region setting. The drive reports that it requires media of the destination region (region 2) so please insert appropriate media and try again." When I insert a region 2 DVD into the drive and click okay it asks if I'm sure I want to change to region 2, I click OK and I get the same error message as above. I have tried uninstalling the drive and then rebooting the computer to force Windows 7 to reinstall it but it just comes up the same as it was. Any idea how to get this working again?
