No Audio Will Come Out Of Speakers Until Reboot
Dec 5, 2012
The audio to my laptop has been going silent on me lately, and I'm not sure if it's being disabled by something, or if there is a bigger problem going on.I don't exactly know what triggers it, it just seems to go out at random times. The only sure way I know to fix this, is to reboot my system. But I want to know why it decides to go out in the first place?I only put my system to sleep when I'm done with it, and when I'm ready to use it again I wake it up. The audio will work fine for many more sleeps, until it comes time to reboot due to strange audio loss.

I have a Toshiba Satellite L505-S6946 running on Windows 7. None of the system volumes are on mute, the speakers properties lie and say it's working properly, I've already reinstalled device driver software, and restored Windows to an earlier date...though, no dice. I'm not totally sure what my other options are..

I have 2 speakers, nothing fancy. And a Sennheiser USB headset. Problem is when I set my default audio device to Realtek High Def Audio, my speakers work and my headphones don't. I have to manually set the default device to my headphones, but then my speakers don't work.
Is there a way to have audio through both?

I've got this problem with my intex USB Audio Speakers where whenever I plug them in my Windows 7 powered laptop, they just don't work. The default audio device in Control Panel/Sounds changes automatically from my onboard High Definition Audio Device to USB Audio Device (which I think it's normal). Also, there is no problem shown in Device Manager and when I hover my mouse on the Sound icon near the clock (system tray or notification area) it shows that the USB Audio Device are the default. I contacted Intex and they first told me that it might be a laptop problem, but then I installed Windows XP - the sound works great. I installed Ubuntu - the speakers are working also. It seems like it's a problem in Windows 7. I sent them another message telling them this, but they have never contacted me again.

For some reason when I plug my headphones into the front audio jack in my computer the sound output of running applications is not moved to my headphones. The audio remains with my speakers. The converse is true too - unplugging my headphones will not transfer audio output that is on my headphones to my speakersI had run into this problem when I was originally setting up my computer and I had been able to fix it.All I had to do is set my headphones to my default sound output and the computer would switch everything when I plugged them in. My headphones are still the default audio source, but for some reason the switching no longer works.

I recently bought HP dv6-6102sa laptop which comes with beats audio. Does anyone know if I have to do some settings to make sound better or it will only work with beats headsets. I've tried normal headsets and I didn't noticed any difference sound quality. Also in quick guide, it says laptop got 4 speakers but I only notice sound coming out of 2 when I play audio.

I'm at my wits end on a problem here. The sound on my computer is not working because the Realtek driver (or the motherboard, not sure which) is not recognizing my speakers that are plugged in. I get this:
I have tried to re-install any and all drivers that may be affected with no success. Tried restarting, messing with the BIOS, to no avail. What should I do now? This is seriously holding up my work (I'm a music composer).

So I updated my PC today and when it came back on there was no sound what so ever! My g35's still have sound but my Logitech Z5500 nothing, I have tried everything, updating, re installing the Realtek sound drivers, restoring the pc, even wired the speakers up to my partners media PC and sound comes through ruling out speakers.
I have tried upgrading the bios, been in bios looking around everything is enabled, in playback device option the green bar is filling up indicating everything is fine there. I have tried a SPDIF Optical cable, nothing, the standard black, green and orange cables, and nothing, I'm at witts end with the thing at the moment.

ok to uncomplicated things ive read thru the forums and could not find anything concrete on this problem of mine..
i have a gigabyte mobo/amd cpu w/onboard hdmi
my issue is sound switching right now as it stands, i need to manually switch on my pc between the HDMI audio as my main device and my PC speakers as my main device... on my laptops this is not a problem, it can automatically detect if hdmi is plugged in and switch sound over..
the main reason is its a slight pain to keep going over after a movie and switch over, nor do i want to disconnect a hdmi cable every time..
any suggestions how to automate this problem???

So I just switched motherboards from a Gigabyte Z68X-UD3H-B3 to a Biostar TZ77XE3. With the Gigabyte board, I could plug in both my sets of speakers, having 4 outputting sound at the same time. Now, however, I have my microphone plugged into the pink hole, and my primary speakers plugged into the green hole. However, I've tried plugging in my second set of speakers to every audio plug on the board, and it still seems like it doesn't want to output sound. In the Realtek HD Audio Manager, only the first set of speakers is recognized as being plugged in the analog, but not the second.

I know there's similar topics to this here, but none of them have the same kind of problem. I have 3 jacks, so I can get audio output from 2 sources, and audio input from another. My problem is, when I plug in both my headphones and speakers, I get all the audio output from my computer from them both at the same time. I want to just get the audio from my Steam voice chat on the headphones and the audio from my game from my speakers, as I am fond of making videos with FRAPS and don't want the voice recorded. I know it is possible to split the audio, but when I go to my playback devices in my sound options, all that's there is speakers, no headphones. It would appear that my headphones and speakers both register as speakers at the same time. I am running Windows 7 Home Premium.

I have a Logitech x-530 system that I'm trying set up to my HP Compaq dx2400 Microtower computer. I've plugged in the three connectors to the pins - red in red, pink in pink and blue in black - just like I did on my other computer. However, it only plays sound from the front two speakers.
I make matters worse, I have NO Realtek Audio Manager, and if I edit my speaker settings from the control panel, then I ONLY have the option to choose 2.1 sound - no 5.1.

I'm working on a custom pc that my brother built for me. The specs are in my signature. I recently upgraded from 32 bit to 64 bit Windows 7 home premium. I did a drive reformat also. Initially, everything was fine. But for some reason all of a sudden, I have no sound, my plugged in speakers are not detected at all and the audio service is not running. Everything else is fine. I assumed it was as a result of an update, so I did a system restore. I guess my restore points didn't go back far enough. No change.
According to my motherboard specs, I have the realtek ALC888 onboard audio. So, I thought I'd just be able to install the latest hd audio driver for my os from realtek's site. I tried several times (10+). It prompts me to restart and when I do, it says that the device driver did not install correctly and it defaults to the microsoft one every time. In device manager, I have a yellow triangle next to one of the 2 "high definition audio controllers" with a code 10 error (device cannot start).
Under sound, video and game controllers, I have "High definition audio device": microsoft, driver version 6.1.7601.17514 11/19/2010. I tried manually installing the driver from the zip file by directing the update utility to it's extracted location. It always says that my driver is up to date. I'm not sure whether I'm supposed to be updating one of the hd audio controllers or the hd audio device or both (I've tried both), so I suppose i could be doing it wrong.
I've tried uninstalling the hd audio controllers and the hd audio devices and rebooting, the same thing happens. I've tried a repair install from the disc. No change. The only thing I haven't tried is reformatting my hard drive and doing yet another clean install. I really don't want to have to do this again because re-downloading my programs and music/docs/pictures is a chore. Completely reinstalled windows and still don't have any sound...I'm completely at a loss.

So I built this computer a few weeks ago with Windows 7 Ultimate. Everything sound-wise has been working til a few days ago, but I have been working through some video problems.Since this started on Friday, the sound mixer/volume control shows sound playing. But nothing comes out the speakers. When I click the top, it doesn't say 'speakers', it says 'Realtek audio'. When I click that, the sound window comes up and under "jacks" it says "rear optical jack." The top says S/PDIF. Those are both formats that I have never used on this system.I've always used only the rear panel analog jack.Anyways, I feel like I've tried everything under the sun and I'm close to RMA'ing the motherboard.

I installed the latest realtek ac97 drivers and so far my speakers (playback) and mic (recording) works just fine. Unfortunately I cant get the sound to playback through both my speakers and headset at the same time.
It only allows me to set one or the other as my default playback device, is there any way I can have both playback at the same time?

My computer was recently RMA'd due to a faulty PSU and video card. I just received it back and the speakers that I used before no longer work. I figured it was a driver issue and simply downloaded the RealTek drivers but it didn't fix the problem. The AMD card comes with its own drivers. I had problems in the past with their HD audio codecs and tried uninstalling them but that didn't seem to fix it either. I went into device manager and located that there were drivers installed and they checked out. I checked for hidden or disabled devices in "Playback devices" and didn't find any.
Things I've tried:
- Installing audio drivers.
- Uninstalling and reinstalling audio drivers.
- System restore.
- Checking proper connection of speakers.
- Verification that speakers work.
By just looking at the audio mixer, it would appear that the system is playing sounds because there is activity in the mixer when a song or other sounds are playing. The problem is there is nothing coming from the speakers. Is it possible that my audio ports on the motherboard could be faulty?

I have a Gateway model MD2614U laptop os Windows 7 home 32bit. When I unplug the headphones to use the internal speakers sometimes the laptop will switch over and sometimes it won't. When it won't switch over. I open the volumes control window and I can see the green bar going up and down with the audio source but there is no sound coming out. I have to end up closing down the program that is producing the sound then the switch over will complete and I restart the program. I also have the same problem when I plug the headphones back in, again no sound from the headphones even though I see the green bar moving. Also some programs that send and receive audio over the internet will lock up when I unplug or plug in ether the headphones and or the microphone.

from the digital audio device? every time i plug in my $20 speakers i got from target, the audio device changes from my soundmax driver (which comes thru the lappy speakers) to a digital audio device in my little speaker icon thingy and i don't know how to manually change it back except thru reinstalling the drivers and rebooting a bunch of times, when i go to properties it only shows the enabled device and i can't find the other output option. if i reinstall the soundmax drivers it switches back to laptop speakers but this is obviously a hassle.

I recently went into my computer to install a Corsair H80 Water pump for the GPU. Anyhow, after i connected all the cables and turned on the computer again i did not have any sound. Even though im not an expert with computers, i'm pretty sure all the cables are connected right (but there is always a possibility i screwed up there).I do have sound devices, that is not the issue. After the first pc boot i had the Realtek digital output (realtek high definition audio) as the sound device. I went into the control panel and pressed sound. The previous audio device (that i had and was working) was there, but stated as "Not plugged in".So, my computer does not detect or react as i connect any headsets nor speakers. I also checked the audio in the mixer to see that it "plays sound" which i can confirm.I have searched the web for people with the same issues and tried a few "solutions" but none of them worked for me.They were:
1. Uninstall and reinstalling the drivers
2. Making sure i got the latest versions of the drivers
3. Turning on the front jack panel in the Realtek HD Audio Manager, which resulted with the speakers apparing to be connected and works according to the computer but still no sound.
4. Tried different speakers and headphones.
After trying several things im starting to believe it might be me who failed at connecting the computer. But if so i have no idea how to fix it, as it does not matter if i connect the audio cable instead of the HD audio cable or if i leave them unconnected. My os is Windows 7 Ultimate.I got an Intel motherbord DX58SO and my sound device/card is Realtek high definition audio?

I put in a Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio (PCIe), installed the latest driver from Creative, found here: Creative Worldwide Support (1.04.0000, released 30th June, 2009), and it seems that whenever I click things that make noise (a good example being the volume slider in the system tray), one of my speakers (which one being somewhat random) makes a fairly loud *popping* noise. It also does this when I press a button on the keyboard that makes noise (such as when I press the left arrow in the Find box in Chrome when it's empty).

splitting audio to two separate output devices in windows 7 x64.I'm preparing my primary PC to act as a Media center. Ideally I'd like for someone to be able to watch netflix, or online videos on the TV with audio and video running through the HDMI cable while someone else can use the PC monitor & desktop speakers to game or do other tasks. The issue is both gaming applications and chrome (or other web browsers) only support audio playing through the default audio device in windows 7. As a result, i'm forced to pick whether i want all audio to play from the TV speakers or the desktop speakers.
Summary of Specs:
Asus M2N-Sli Deluxe mobo - rear port used for desktop speakers
Radeon HD 6870 - HDMI for TV sound
Athlon 64 x2 6000+
4 gigs ram
Doing some research I've learned this was a feature in win XP but was dropped in vista/7. On windows 7 support forums the Microsoft Support reply that it was an intentional omission win both windows 7 and vista.I know how to direct the audio from winamp, media player classic, and WMP to the output device of my choosing.I have tried three third party applications:Virtual Audio Cable: lets me play the same audio out both the HDMI connection and the desktop speakers.IndieVolume: shows promise as it lets me direct audio from applications to the output device i choose, but all attempts to get the software to change my web browser's output device haven't worked. I also think the software is not supported for windows 7 x64.J River - Media Center 17: media center software with an embedded web browser. Using this media center i can direct the audio from any media on my computer to the audio device of my choosing, but the embedded web browser plays out of windows default output device not the audio device i choose.

My HP Presario CQ62 acts strangely since last night. After playing videos and audios for a while, suddenly there is no audio when playing videos or audio clips and the system freezes and I turned it off. I just updated iTunes to the latest version and was syncing with the iPod. I also updated Avast free anti-virus to the latest version about 2 days ago. That was last night. This morning, I also experienced the same thing. I was also syncing using iTunes. I was using Chrome and after I closed it it would not start again. Then the system reboot itself. Recently I also use msconfig to uncheck HPMSGSVC.exe (and a few other options) because it was taking so much time to boot up.
What is causing this suddenly no audio problem, among others, I described. Windows froze again after I typed the last sentence. I shutdown and restart windows. This happens after 1-3 hours of use since last night.

I have been recently experiencing a strange crash that happens on my computer frequently. So far, in the ~10 times it has occured over the last 3 days, it has crashed mostly during my gaming time - until now. I was writing this when it happened again. Basically, all sound starts a loop and nothing works at all. I initially thought it was overheating in my computer so I ran some temp. checks while playing games and nothing in my computer was breaking 75 deg. C, so I ruled that out. I ran anti-spyware and anti-virus - nothing.
The only changes my computer has made since I noticed the crashes are the following: installed a few programs, added 3 400gb hard drives to my computer, and swapped out my PSU from a Kingwin 730w (cheapo) to an Antec HCG-750w, a much nicer version. I doubt it's any of the programs, most are games, and I'm not leaning towards the HDDs since there is no information on them at the moment. Could it have to deal with my power supply? Nothing is overheating, as I stated before, but maybe something isn't fully plugged in? I have no idea.
On a side note - when I added those hard drives, I remember booting up and not getting any boot. I opened my computer back up and I noticed I had bumped the power cord on the boot drive, plugged it back in, and rebooted. Everything went fine from there..

My computer's onboard audio recently stopped working. The Realtek High Definition Audio Speakers suddenly show as "Not plugged in" in the Playback devices dialog.oinciding with this, five new devices, all "Speakers," all showing as "Ready" or one of the defaults, have appeared: WsAudio_DeviceS(1) through WsAudio_DeviceS(5).None of these WsAudio_DeviceS produce any audio when tested; I have tried this with both my speakers and some headphones. The Realtek Digital Output still appears as "Ready," which isn't useful, given that I don't have any S/PDIF devicesI have tried connecting some wireless headphones with a Bluetooth dongle I had lying around, but I couldn't get them to work very well (nor could I back when my speakers were working). Recording with a USB microphone works fine, but I haven't tried it through the onboard audio Line In jack

I have a Dell XPS M1330 laptop and have recently upgraded to windows 7 professional (32bit) from windows vista. Everything seems to be running smoothly except I can get no sound from the internal laptop speakers. When I plug in external speakers in via the jacks on the front, sound comes through fine, but as soon as I unplug them there is nothing. Headphones also work like this too. Under sounds in device manager, it simply says 'High Definition Audio Device', and I'm not sure if I should be downloading some other drivers?
