No Application For Search And How Add Agent Ransack To Disk Context
Jan 11, 2012
When you right-click while on a folder in Windows Explorer, "search" isn't working. It complains that "This file does not have a program associated with it..." I presume I somehow clobbered something, somewhere. How do I get this working again? In installed Agent Ransack for doing searches, and it works fine from the context menu (right click while in Windows Explorer) for ANY folder EXCEPT the top level disk... So, I can search "Program Files" just fine, but I can't search "c:"... The command doesn't show up in the context menu at the disk level. How do I add it?

I read in Classic Shell's FAQ that I can add a button for e.g. Agent Ransack to my Windows Explorer toolbar, to do searches. I know how to add that button so that it launches Agent Ransack, but I want Agent Ransack's search location to be the folder in which I clicked the button. I suspect that I need to edit the shortcut properties, but with what?
I can currently right-click any folder and select "Agent Ransack" and it will use that folder as the search location. But I want the ability to click a shortcut while a folder is already open (otherwise I have to go up to the parent folder, and then right-click the folder and select Agent Ransack, and then down into the folder to open it up again).

After moving from old XP to a new Windows 7 installation I miss a "search here" context menu entry for folders in WinExplorer. In old WinXP a search form dialog popped up and let me perform a search in the whole directory tree.
How does that work in Windows 7?

Okay, I'm not sure if this can be done as easily as I'm hoping. What I'm wanting to do is move already existing context menu items into a cascading context menu to organize and reduce clutter. For instance, I would have a cascading menu named "Scan with" and inside it would be avast! Internet Security and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.On a side note, does anyone know how to remove the following context menu items?Computer- Show on DesktopControl Panel- Show on DesktopImages- Set as desktopbackground- Print Rotate clockwise- Rotate counterclockwiseMusic/Videos- Add to Windows Media Player List

I recently bought a new computer:old was 5 year old gateway with xp - ran good just old New is acer with win 7 x64 home premium.I was using my Seagate Freeagent desktop 1 tb as a networked drive - connected through the laptop and sharing folders to be able to watch movies on an older desktop hooked up to the tv.So now I have the network going with the new pc and everything is great. I turn off the acer for the night, come back in the morning, and the freeagent is gone - its connected but windows does not see it. I check device manger, and nothing, So I pull out the usb cable, replug it in and it shows back up on My Computer and the device manager. This is the issue every time i turn the computer off. Now I dont want to have to unplug it every time i turn the computer back on. I tried a few other usb thumb drives - none have this issue only the hard drive. I would reformat it but it is close to full - but has more data on it then i can put on the computer to save from a reformat.

recommendations on a hardware/software inventory tool that comes with an agent.I manage a windows network of about 150 machines and would like to be able to install the agent on each machine and then get an overview of all the machines on the network with list all their installed hardware and software. Also we have laptops that leave the network. I would like them to "phone home" once in a while to check in.The reason I'm looking for an agent vs agent-less is I don't want to have to poke holes in the local firewalls or have to configure remote access per machine. Just looking to deploy the agent. Spiceworks almost does all this but doesn't have a stable agent yet as far as I know.

Our office has an old program that we still need to use when upgrading our PC's to Windows 7. The program will run fine if you start a windows virtual PC and install and run it. However, based on the needs of our office, I need to be able to run Windows XP mode and simply have an icon for our users to click to take them to the application. If I install the program in windows XP mode, and then add a shortcut to the file under all users/start menu, a shortcut is placed in the appropriate place on the windows 7 machine and I can copy that shortcut ot the desktop. The program runs fine until you restart the computer. Once you restart the computer and double click the link on the windows 7 desktop to the program running in windows XP mode, it says:
Cannot start virtual application. The application is blocked from running as a virtual application.
I read some other posts saying to put a new shortcut in the all users/start menu folder. This works, but only until our users restart their computer. The next time the computer is up, the problem happens again. This is not an acceptable solution to have to create a new shortcut for each workstation each time the computer is restarted.

Outlook 2007 Task search versus Windows7 computer wide search.
I enter the same keyword (one of the words contained within the title of a completed task) in the Outlook Task search box as I do the Windows 7 orb 'search programs and files.' The Windows 7 search returns the correct search result (along with a lot other results having the same keyword) practically immediately whereas Outlook is still searching...and searching.
If I have index options set to include the C: drive and Outlook, what's going on with Outlook?

The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000142) Click on OK to terminate the application. The only option is to click ok. I am deathly afraid to turn off my computer because my brother recently did and that caused it to freeze at the blue HP startup screen, but thats another thread. I get this error whenever I launch anything. I can't even open up the task manager. I really need help. I don't currently have a way to back up my stuff either but I am working on it. By the way, I don't know that my brother was having the same error message as i was or if he was having any error messages. I use zone alarm full security suite if that helps at all, I don't know if it deleted a registry file or something.

I began having an issue with my laptops ATI Radeon graphics driver not working properly. It is fixed now, but the other issues I was having at the same time was not being able to view indexed files through the "search programs and files" and "windows explorer search" box. The screen goes blank or does not produce any results. Also, one of my downloaded software disk programs will not open--error. This particular program, Logos Bible software, index its files quite often. Even when I am not using the program. I also cannot change my desktop background to any picture except solid colors. I think my laptop has a corrupted file somewhere, or it is infected with malware.

I was just wondering if it is possible to reverse engineer a 32-bit application and recompile it as a 64-bit application. If so, would it still function?I don't know if talking about reverse engineering is acceptable in this forum or not. If not, my apologies. Also, I don't exactly know how "legal" it is or if it's against any EULAs.I'm a heavy browser user. I use Firefox Nightly and constantly have several tabs open. I also run several different applications at once and occasionally Skype. I'm CONSTANTLY hitting the 32-bit barrier for RAM (can't remember if it's 3.1, 3.2 or 3.3 GB) and I still have more RAM on my system. I'm thinking the video quality on Skype starts going south when I run low/out on addressable memory since it's a 32-bit application

I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate. I've been using it for some time without problems, but this morning I was unable to get on the Internet. Yesterday I'd installed an update for ZoneAlarm which I thought was probably the problem, so I uninstalled in and downloaded and installed PC Tools Firewall Plus instead. no my computer will connect to the Internet OK, but whenever I try to open most programs, I get the following error:"The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000142). Click OK to close the application."The only two exceptions I've found are Microsoft Security Essentials and Internet Explorer which both work fine.

Is there a way to customize context menus? For example, if I right click on the task bar a context menu comes up and one of the options is Start Task Manager. This menu option runs tskmgr.exe in the Windows/system32 folder. Can I make a option like this or change the option in the menu to run a different program or shortcut?

"windows cannot find 'search:query=XXX'" error I have been experiencing lately.
The problem is similar to the one I described previously (here: Windows could not start the Windows Search service on Local Computer)
...namely, I am running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit, and have experienced the same error message ( windows cannot find 'search:query=XXX', where XXX is my search query) when attempting to initiate a search via the Windows start menu search box. Unfortunately, my previously proposed solution (of removing a network search location from Windows Search Index list) does not resolve it.....and so finally I resorted to using Samhrutha's proposed solution of modifying the registry to reset Windows Search back to default (which DID work...but ended up removing all the search index customizations I had made).
However, when I then modify the search indexing options to include indexing of my C: drive, I get the "windows cannot find 'search:query=XXX'" error message.
If I then uncheck the C: drive box in the search in the search indexing options, the error message does not occur....so I then went thru a tedious process of trying to identify which folders on my C drive were causing the issue, and from what I am able to tell, the "windows cannot find 'search:query=XXX'" error message seems to always occur when the indexing options include at least one folder WHICH IS OWNED by TRUSTED INSTALLER (e.g., program files folder, program files (x86), c:, etc.). This wasn't a problem previously, so my guess is that MS Update recently (e.g., w/in the last few months) changed some security setting which now prevents Windows Search from being able to index/access folders owned by TRUSTED INSTALLER, resulting in the "windows cannot find 'search:query=XXX'" error message.
