My old C drive wouldn't boot and I thought it was failing. I installed a new SSD I had and put Windows 7 on it. Now the new drive is C which is causing all of the files on the old C drive to be unusable do to bad path name.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI encrypted my 4GB brand new Flash Drive with Bitlocker to Go in Windows 7 Enterprise (RC), ejected it, restarted my Windows 7 PC, and everything still worked. I tried opening it in XP and it was read-only and required my password to even look at it. That was expected. What I didn't expect, after ejecting it from the XP machine, was that it would be:
INACCESSIBLE, UNREADABLE, and IMPOSSIBLE to FORMAT after that!
No matter what PC I put it in now, I get a message saying that I must format the drive and nothing else. The drive is worthless. I when I right click in Windows 7, there is no BitLocker option. Before I throw it away, does someone know how to FIX THIS?
I recently received a hp mini 110-3015dx, it was slow and constantly freezing, ergo I did a factory restore, everything is great now accept I can't access my c: drive. when I double click I get the message; c: is not accessible, access denied. What must I do to change this setting? Windows 7 starter.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI got pop up in utorrent says a directory is corrupt, I start to run chkdsk on that drive. In this case in have drive letter E. I click on computer, then go to the drive, right click, properties, tools, check now. It says the drive is need to to forced to dismount. I click on ok. then in computers, the drive just show the letter, not size or disk meter. In the open windows on task bar, I did not see scan disk running, or maybe I accidentally closed because I was switching between several programs.
I thought restart pc the drive will show again, but after restart, the drive does not show up, it says 'E: is not accessible, the file or directory is corrupted and unreadable.' I tried to start pc 2 times, still same. I downloaded Partition Wizard Home Edition (minitool partition wizard home edition 5.2) and running it, it showing my files are still in the drive, but not accessible in windows. I also run chkdsk in recovery environment, but still says disk is corrupt, chkdsk cannot continue.
I have an external hard drive that was formatted in NTFS on an XP machine not too long ago. It is a 160 GB Western Digital. It has been working great on windows 7 for a couple of weeks. Just today it won't let me access the drive and it is telling me that I will need to format the drive before I can use it. I have so much important data on here. I am really worried about losing it all. Why is this happening?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a WD 320Gb 3.5inch hard drive that was originally bought as an external drive in an enclosure. A few months ago, while booting, my computer would go through blue screens one after another if the external hard drive was switched on from the enclosure when the computer was started. I never really did anything about that, just left it off and turned it on when i needed it. Mind you, it and the computer still seemed to work fine.
Now i have decided to keep it internally. So, as soon as i booted up after connecting up the same drive, i'm going through these exact same blue screens again. I'm not 100% sure if that is the cause but signs point to it.
Here's the blue screen info:
The error message is:
IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
and the stop info is:

and finally, here's the picture i took of the blue screen, a bit is cut of but i know it says "IRQL" on the left hand side.
First I want to say that the drive works without problems at the correct speed. The problems come upon disconnect. I also want to to stress that USB 2.0 discs are working flawlessly. If I use safe eject and the look in the device manager I get an error 47 saying that it has been shut down but not disconnected, it also says I can rectify it by disconnecting and reconnecting but this does not work. If I do so the drive will not be recognized. The enclosure has a power switch. After a safe eject I have tried both pulling the USB cable while power is still on and also going the other way by first shutting the power down. In both cases the error 47 shows in device manager. When this happens the CPU load goes up to about 20% and stays that way when it before was around 0 at idle. If I reboot the drive reconnects and I have no problem with it unless I try to safely eject it again.

I have windows 7 and office on my laptop and I want it on my desktop pc. There isn't close to 64gb of info on my laptop so it should be fine even though the hard drive says I have 160gb. It is all free space except for those programs.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a USB external hard drive that I keep all my documents etc on (had it for years)I upgraded from Vista Home to & Home Premium then had to upgrade recently to Professional to run my Sage. Through all these upgrades my ext. drive ran fine. Occasionally the drvie letter would change if I had something else plugged into the USB, this was always easily corected in disk management by changing the drive path.The connection on the case packed up so I had to get the drive put into a new case, now when I plug it in the drive is assigned G instead of F, I tried to change the drive letter allocation in Disk Management but it won't let me as the program still thinks I have a second ext. hard drive which is labelled F. I suspect this has happened because when the usb connection broke the drive was disconnected suddenly instead of a proper eject.How do I get Disk Management to remove the inactive drive - i can't find any obvious way - eject, delete etc are all missing when I click on tools or tasks.

I didn't really care for Ubuntu so I decided to delete the partition it was on. That might have been a mistake. Well, now there's 87.68GB of free space on my hard disk that I can't use and I don't know how to add it back to my c: partition.
There was another post about this a couple years ago, but I don't understand the instructions and am not actually sure if it worked. Can someone explain how to do this, please? I'm not completely computer illiterate, but I'm not familiar with partitioning disks. It was just the one time with Ubuntu.
I have Win 7 home premium on an HP laptop with 4 usb ports. I have 2 Western Digital Elements 1.5 TB drives for backups. If I plug in one of the drives, Win assigns a drive letter, but if I add the second one it doesn't.
To troubleshoot, I've plugged each drive into every usb port on the laptop, and each port reads each drive alone, but if I plug in the second drive while the first is still in, it shoes up in devices but does not get a drive letter. I tried assigning a different drive letter to the device plugged in first, but Win still doesn't assign a letter to the second drive.
My laptop is Acer with Windows 7 home premium 64 bit OS. View 8 Replies View RelatedBackground: I have a WinXP desktop machine with a hard drive that may have a virus/trojan/rootkit/etc. Normal scans on the WinXP machine with MSE or ThreatFire have not discovered the problem. But the best way to scan a drive is to remove it and treat it as a purely 'dummy' data drive plugged into a usb drive dock and run the scan from a clean machine. This way any infected programs and/or O.S. on the drive will have no control to mask or hide themselves. My other computer is an HP Windows 7 laptop. View 4 Replies View RelatedI've been noticing after re-installing Win 7 that I get random floppy drive seeks and the hard drive light flashes like crazy and then everything is fine again.I have Clamwin AV,Spyware Blaster and Spybot S&D installed,but that's it,no Windows Defender or Essentials AV.Any ideas what causes this? It's a minor annoyance,but I just want to make sure it's not damaging anything.Also would Readyboost help me? However I think something might have gone wrong when I give my external HDD a drive letter that was held by one of the flash card reader).I wrote "I think" because I am not really sure since I never wanted to use the internal card reader till today so I never noticed there was an issue. Anyway, the internal card reader does not show up even when I insert a card in the reader. Basically nothing happens. I have uninstalled the "USB Mass storage device" and it gets installed without any issue but the problem is still there: I can't see the reader. the INTERNAL flash card reader has a USB slot and when I insert a EXTERNAL flash drive, the EXTERNAL flash drive shows up.

It has one hard drive which I have partitioned into 4 partitions, with C: being where I put all the system software. The board has mulitple SATA ports.Change considered: cloning the C: partition onto a new SSD so that I can get the performance boost of an SSD. There are some heat problems with existing hard drive so I probably need to change it out, so I would also like to clone the D:, E:, and F: partitions to a new hard drive.I have cloned a single physical drive to another physical drive, and the software (Ghost, or the like) usually handles it ok, so that all I need to do is adjust some partition sizes, and then disconnect the old hard drive and everyting is good. This includes cloning a single hard drive with multiple partitions to being cloned to a new single hard drive with identical numbers of partitions.Compared to my prior experience, is there something different about cloning one partition only vs cloning the whole drive. My proposed plan is:
1) Install SSD
2) clone C: to SSD only
3) clone D: E: F: of old drive to new drive.
4) remove old drive.
One drive appears to have duplicated itself by populating any drive letter thats free! Tried simply deleting the ones not needed but they reappear?

I have a SMALLER excellent 500gb, 7200 rpm hard disk that I'd like to replace the failing hard disk with. I've read that my Windows 7 System Repair DVD will not restore my recent system image (on NAS) to a smaller partition. The C:partition on the failing drive is well over 600gb but can shrink to 300gb. QUESTION Can I restore a system image from my larger drive "as is". If not, and I shrink my C: partition (contain windows) ay 350GB will I be able to restore the system image to where windows will boot?I have an old copy of (7.0) partition magic that I used to resize partitions on XP machines Can this old 32 bit partition magic safely resize my C: partition. If so, and I create a new system image can I restore it to the new disk?

After installing three or four updates yesterday my laptop now clicks the optical drive a couple of times as I start any video or music file on the hard drive. Not a fatal flaw, but, very irritating just the same. Did a system restore to the morning before the updates- same behavior remains. Installed updates again, removed them one at a time, same thing. Restored to over a week ago, same behavior! What is up with this clicking. The files start and play immediately, no problem there, I'd just like the optical drive to mind it's own business. Movie discs play fine, burns stuff fine, just go to your corner and SHUT UP!

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm really hoping I find an answer to this question besides the one I've found on the internet a hundred times over (That's not a good idea, you shouldn't do it).
My question is: Is there a way to allow a user to create/edit files in the C drive (system drive), and in the Program Files contained there? Let's assume that this user is not only a local admin, but a domain admin as well.
The reason for this is I work for a company that does a lot of editing within these areas of Windows. We need to be able to create and edit files where they are stored. I know one way around we've found is to copy the item out of the folder, edit it, and put it back, but this is a pain in the butt.
I also know that most program need to "run as admin", so that's not the problem either. I've given this user every right and permission in the Security tab of the C drive, and had it propagate down through all files, folders, and sub-folders, and still I'm hit with an error that says "Access is Denied" or another one saying that I don't have the right privileges.
Please, if anyone knows how to change this in 7 it would be much appreciated. I know that this worked in XP, and I'm not looking for someone to tell me "this is a bad idea so don't do it", or "maybe it didn't work right in XP". I have seen enough of these.
UPDATE: I have been playing around with saving office and wordpad documents into the C drive, and into the Program files. It seems that I'm able to do both now (for some odd reason), but I still receive intermittent errors when trying to edit or copy/paste or cut/paste from one location to another.
I am using windows 7 professional 32bit. I have my pendrive named 'jerry' . when i connect any pendrive to my computer it gets renamed automatically to 'JERRY'. I dont know why this happens .
