Network Visibility - And Windows Firewall
Aug 14, 2009
I've got an Asus P5W DH Deluxe mobo, which has dual Gigabit ethernet and 802.11g wireless onboard.
I'm using the wireless for my Internet connection - which works fine.
However, I also have a crossover cable plugged in to one of the ethernet cards, which I'm trying to connect to my laptop (Macbook) - so I can map a drive to transfer a large file over to it.
In Windows I've manually set up the LAN adapter and defined the IPv4 address: 192.168.1.2
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: blank
Then set up my Mac in a similar way (but using 192.168.1.3).
Tried pinging the PC from the Mac and received no reply. Figured it would be the Windows firewall...so switched that off. Still no reply.
I used to do this in XP without any problems at all, so there's been some networking change that's affecting this.
The network connection is defined as "Unknown" and I'm not able to change it - would this setting result in my not being able to even ping the box?
PS - I have also plugged in a NAS box using the same cable and connect TO that FROM my PC (mapping a drive) without any problems...so outbound network traffic appears OK.

Running Windows 7 RC 64-bit. Everything working fine within Windows XP Mode. All of the network and network devices are visible. All systems have same user account and password. Network is workgroup called WORKGROUP.
Per the instructions, I uninstalled the previous versions of Windows Virtual PC and Windows XP Mode, downloaded and installed the new RC versions of these products. Everything installed fine, but within the XP virtual machine I do not have access to any of the other resources on the my network. Previously they were all visible.
I went though the normal XP network set up, but the only thing that is visible within XP is the XP machine itself. My network is a simple non-domain network named WORKGROUP. What do I have to do within the Windows XP Mode virtual machine to see the printers and other systems on the network.

The only workaround would be to set the group policy settings via regedit instead. To help, the links in the green info box at the top of the tutorial can help show you the registry locations for group policy settings. In addition, there may be a tutorial already written that will have a .reg file already created to make it easy to change as well. If you like, you could look through the tutorial index for any that may be created.I have several user accounts and I want to restrict the visibility of certain folders to certain user accounts. How do I do that ? And I have only Home Basic.I don't want to other users to see certain folders that exist in my HDD.

I am using kaspersky internet suite and disabled windows firewall. The problem is that turning the windows firewall off turns the pulic/home file/printer sharing and network discovery on.Turning on or off these settings starts the firewall.Disabling the firewall service permanently allows file sharing and network discovery for both public and home network, which cannot be turned off.I tried uninstalling kasperksky but nothing has changed.

Usually I disable Windows Firewall because it's annoying to hit "allow" every time i run each of my 30-40 games for the first time. I use avast! and nothing else, since I usually don't visit "adult" sites or anything out of the ordinary. I was thinking about getting zone alarm, though.
Well I need network printing to be enabled for the rest of my family to print without having to kick me off, but for network printing to be on windows firewall must be turned on. Is there a workaround, or do I just need ANY firewall turned on, not just Windows Firewall?

I was once using bitdefenderTS2009, but then I uninstalled it and now I'm using 'Kaspersky Technical Preview for Windows 7'.
When I'm using Snipping Tool to save screenshot for my post at 'show your WEI score' thread on the forum I noticed this (see attachment)
I guess those are some leftovers from imperfect BDTS2009 uninstallation process. Any suggestion on how I could get rid of those?
For you know, I also have used the Uninstall Tool I got from Bitdefender website successfully.

Recently had a virus infection and noticed that the windows firewall service is missing. When trying to reset to recommended settings by using control panel received error code 0x80070424. Cannot access other computers or shared files/folders on home network. Saw a previous post dated 12-17 that appears to be the same problem.

I've tried both Comodo and ZA firewalls. I prefer either over Windows 7 built-in firewall. The problem I have is after installing either of these I have control issues with Network Discovery and File Sharing. More exactly, even though the system shows these two items are off and/or disabled (manually), Start> Computer> Network will start showing available computers to connect to, whereas, Windows 7 firewall will inform me that both items are turned off. I use a public WiFi so this is obviously not a good thing. How to deal with this 3rd party firewall/File Sharing issue? Is the fact that the 3rd party firewalls are blocking any connection attempts a sign that everything is okay? Or should I just stay with Windows 7 firewall?

I'm having some problems with windows' firewall. Last night I tried to set up a simple ftp server (to share a couple of folders, and access that folder through other computers connected to the network by typing the IP address into a browser/ftp client on the other computer). My problem simply is, that I cannot connect to the ftp. It works fine when I try to access it from my computer (which is the server).
But I can't connect to it through other computers, unless I turn off Windows Firewall. I tried playing around with the Inbound/Outbound rules (disabled/enabled everything), nothing worked. I also have FTP allowed in "Allow a program or feature through Windows Firewall", and I still haven't managed to get it to work. Can anyone suggest any solutions?

I've got an issue that's been driving me crazy. I've installed MobaSSH and the windows firewall absolutely refuses to let it through. I've taken down the firewall and everything works fine, so I know its the firewall. Same problem with a Serv-u FTP server but I'm not as worried about that as I am the SSH server. MobaSSH adds itself as a service, so while it was running I found the process and made sure that it was added to the firewall, I can find nothing else to add to exceptions. I haven't found much in terms of firewalls for Windows 7, so I would prefer to get this to work instead of switching firewalls

I'm currently sharing my internet connection with another computer (both run windows 7). The other computer can only access the internet if the computer holding the dial up connection has windows firewall turned off. I tried to add an exception in windows firewall for port 80 but did not have any effect. The local area connection adapter on the computer that's holding the internet connection has the following settings: [code] the other computer has obtain IP and DNS address automatically Using ADSL modem is a Sagem F@st 800 to connect to the internet no router used, just a simple cat-45 cable (i think that's the name of the cable!)

After loading several AV programs/scanners due to trying to eliminate a virus, I wanted to confirm my Windows Firewall was turned on. When I went to Control Panel/Windows Firewall and clicked on "Turn Windows Firewall On or Off", all I saw in the "Customize settings for each type of network" window was the button "Use recommended settings" within a box called "Update your firewall settings". When I clicked on that button, nothing happened. Contrary to the picture shown in the Windows 7 Help pages, there was no option to actually turn the firewall on/off in this particular window. My intention is to simply verify the Windows Firewall is turned on after this virus happened. My questions are:1) Could an AV program/scanner program that I loaded have caused the Windows Firewall to be disabled (or replaced)? How do I know which AV programs have their own built-in firewall?2) Assuming my Windows Firewall should be turned on, how can I verify it really is turned on?

It started around 3 months ago, my firewall just wasn't working. I haven't needed it to be honest, but recently bought a program which for some reason needs the firewall to be active before it can install. All I get when I access the firewall options is 'Use Recommended Settings', and when clicked doesn't perform any actions.

My computer got infected by Win 7 Security 2012 rogue virus. I removed the virus with the instruction on bleepingcomputer. I think I removed the virus, but I cannot go onto the firewall. When I go to windows firewall, everything is disabled and thus not able to enable the firewall. So when I click 'Use recommended settings' it says that Windows firewall can't change some of your settings, Errorcode 0x80070424.

I set up a network printer and for some reason, Windows won't print to it (no error, the jobs just queues indefinitely) unless the Windows Firewall is disabled. I tried making a rule to allow outbound connections for all programs on all ports (which it seems to me should be the same as turning the firewall off), but no luck. I looked at the port the printer is using and its some WSD port, but there isn't an option to allow one of these under the firewall rules. What is WSD? And does anyone have any suggestions about how to make this work?

When I start Windows 7, the firewall does not want to start up automatically.
I've been in services and checked to see if it was on "Startup Type: Automatic", and it was.
I don't want to have to manually start up the firewall each time I start my PC. I know viruses may be one of the reasons my firewall is acting this way, but my virus scans come up clean.

I have PC tools firewall plus installed on my system. Is it really necessary to switch on windows own firewall along with that? Because it has switched off windows firewall. I am asking this question because somewhere in this forum I read that we should switch windows firewall as well. It is difficult to go to windows firewall and switch it on every time I open my computer.

Does anyone know how to configure the built-in firewall to allow IE and Firefox for Passive Outbound FTP access Port 21?
Currently, all Outbound without rules are set to Deny. Current rules for IE/Firefox set to Allow/TCP 80 and 443/Any IP.
Cannot seem to get the Elevated Command Prompt with the "netsh advfirewall firewall" commands to allow FTP access for IE and Firefox to work.

I have noticed this problem across a variety of computers that are as old as 10 years and as new as 1 month old. Also the same happens on XP machines and Windows 7 machines. I don't recall seeing this before. It just happened in the last 6 months or so (I think). Anyways, I start the computer, log on to an user account and the startup programs start to load. It is at this point that a message appears that states that the firewall is turned off. It usually last for 10 to 20 seconds and then the firewall is turned on again. It does not happen every time I start the computer (just once a day or so). Shouldn't the firewall be the first thing to load or is there a delay with a warning message?

I have a problem, and I'm wondering how I'd fix it. My router only allows 10 ports to be forwarded, and I require more than that for the games that I play. How unsafe would it be to open DMZ to my computer, so that I could allow the ports through Windows Firewall, and block everything else? Or is there a more secure, preferably free, firewall I should use to do that?
