Is there anything similar to Mac OS X Airdrop to wirelessly transfer files between two computers running Windows 7?If possible without an internet connection, but I'd still be fine if it requires one, since one of the computers doesn't have a wireless card.

Now I have Windows 7 machine and can't use them directly.I tried to use Virtual PC XP mode to import files but Virtual PC can only handle something around 136 GB virtual hard disk, so after 6 hours of transfer it stopped... I don't have the XP machine anymore - I'm stuck with Windows 7 and can't figure out how to move these files over..Is there a way to actually open all these Wizard IMGXXXXX.dat files and read them?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI use my home network to stream music and movies from my computers to my Xbox and TV. Now all of a sudden, nothing. Both computers are running Windows 7 Ultimate x64, connected online through wifi, and connected to the network homegroup (that works without any issues), but neither or them detect any of my media devices. I have a Sony Viera ST30 TV and an Xbox 360, both having wired connections to the same network that the computers are on. Features that require the internet on both work perfectly fine. And I have a viera app on my phone that I used to use to control my tv (the app may not be compatible with my phone). Even having sharing enabled on the computers, they just wont detect my TV or my Xbox. If I connect my laptop to the network via wired connection, my devices are found. If I connect to a friend's wireless network, their devices are found as well. There has been no change on either computer from the last time it was working, till now.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI saved my files and settings from a previous installation of windows 7 to an external hard drive using windows easy transfer. Now when I try to transfer those files and setting to my new installation I get the following message:
Windows Easy Transfer can't transfer your files and settings.
The message pops up only a few seconds after the transfer begins.Why is this?! I need those files and windows has screwed me.Everything is basically the same as before I reinstalled. Same computer, same windows 7 installation just recovered to factory settings.Same system language as before.BTW I'm on a Toshiba L505 laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium.
I have tried all the usual suspects such as a clean boot and uninstalling my antivirus to rule out third party interference. I have more than enough space on both my computer and on the external hard drive. I have tried only transferring a user account a few MBs large. I have reinstalled the OS twice just in case something went wrong there. I have clicked on the .MIG file directly. All lead to the same error message.The transfer file seems to be intact and not currupt
Is there another software other than WET that can use the same transfer file that WET created to restore my files? Please help me solve this if you can or at least point me in the right direction because right now I'm clueless. I can't emphasize how important those files are to me. I've searched for solutions on several forums and it seems that this is a problem people have been having for years now and windows hasn't provided an answer yet.
An interesting note, When I reboot the laptop after trying to do the transfer, a new user account appears at startup alongside the one I normally use.This new user account has the same unique name of the user account I am trying to restore but that's where the similarity ends.All the settings for this account are default settings and empty folders.
My daughter's XP laptop crashed (trashed hard disk that I doubt we can rescue much data from) and so we got her a Windows 7 computer. Unless we can rescue much of the old data from crashed XP, she's pretty much starting off empty. Except that today I discovered on an external hard drive the "Easy Transfer" of her account from 15 months ago, from a computer she shared at that time, that was used to "port her up" on the XP laptop. So in theory, this "Easy Transfer" archive should have all of her data and files from 15 months ago.
But although the archive looks like regular Windows folders and files, on closer examination, it's not. For example, I know there are jpg and .doc files, plenty of them, in the mix, yet all I see is lots of shortcuts to such files. Is there a way, without running Windows Easy Transfer (I don't want to mess with her now running and configured Windows 7 laptop), to turn the Easy Transfer archive into a source from which I could copy over selected files and folders onto her new machine?
In a nutshell what i am wanting to accomplish is to be able to log onto my desktop PC and access files that are on my laptop. Transferring large files takes a long time when you have to copy it to an external HDD and then back again onto another PC so i am hoping that if i get this working it will solve my problem.I have tried multiple things like Homegroups and setting the sharing permissions on files to allow me to access them but neither of these options work, i even followed the guide for the later attempt that is posted in a thread further down on this forum.When it comes to the homegroup i set up the homegroup on my laptop (by following a guide someone wrote on this forum) but when i go to access the hoemgroup on my desktop it does not say that there is a homegroup already on the network to access, and yes both computers are on the same wireless network.When it comes to the sharing permissions i follow the PDF also found on this forum to the letter but when it comes to going onto my desktop, opening the network screen my laptop is just not there.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI just bought an Alienware laptop with windows 7 home premium 64bit. As soon as I got it, I connected it to my network and attempted to access my shared files, but it wouldn't detect any of my computers on the network. I have an iMac with Snow Leopard, sharing a few hard drives, & an old Qosmio with Windows XP Media Center Edition, sharing one hard drive. The iMac and Qosmio both detect each other with no issues, sharing files has never been better. I don't remember doing anything special, other than sharing files, on Windows XP, for the files to be present on other devices. On Snow Leopard, I added the XP account, & the Windows 7 account. I enabled sharing files, specifically, AFP & SMB.
And then checked both XP & Windows 7 accounts to assure accessibility. The Group (Workgroup) is the same across all 3 devices. XP detects my iMac & can access the files, & the iMac can detect XP & access the files. Now, my iMac can sometimes detects the Alienware/Windows 7, but since I'm not sharing any files/folders on it, it can't access it. My main problem(s): Windows 7 never detected XP. Once, Windows 7 detected & accessed all files on the iMac, but after shutdown/restart (Possibly updating Windows 7 to Service Pack 1), Windows 7 does not detect or show any computer on the network folder other than itself.
If I turn on "PS3 Media Server" on the iMac, Windows 7 detects it, but when I open it, it takes me to Windows Media Player, which then tells me that the PS3 Media server is empty. On Windows 7, Advanced Sharing Settings, "Home or Work" network settings (I'm have my network set to "Home Network"), Network Discover is ON. File & f=printer sharing is ON. Public Folder Sharing is On. Media Streaming is On. File sharing connection is set to 40- or 56-bit encryption. Password protected sharing is Off. HomeGroup connections is set to "Use user accounts and passwords to connect to other computers". I have Kaspersky Internet Security 2011, if that matters. XP has it as well.
I have files backed up on a WD My Book external hard drive from my XP computer. When I plug in the USB in my new HP Touchsmart, it opens the jump drive, but says the folder is empty. I also have files on my PNY jump drive from the XP and another Vista computer. It opens the jump drive and sees the Vista files but not the XP files. The Vista computer sees all files on the WD My Book and the PNY jump drive. Any suggestion to get Windows 7 to see the files. My old computer died, so I can't use Windows Easy Transfer.

Last time I got a new one, I just installed the old drive as a 2nd drive in new computer and all my files were there as well as all my software I accumulated. Most of the programs worked but some did not, but no big deal.

View 6 Replies View RelatedThree Computers on a home network. Desktop in Office (Windows 7) . Wife's Laptop (Windows 7). My laptop ( Vista unfortunately). Norton Security Suite and all three. I have a network setup and a Homegroup established.
Everything was setup and working so that I could share files between all three. My wife was able to open a desktop file make changes and save it back to the desktop computer.
All of that changed. Now we get a message when trying to save the file. "You do not have permission to save in this location. Contact the administrator to obtain permission".
I have given the entire "MY Documents" sharing permission to everyone. I have checked everything. I have looked over all kinds of forums and nothing has worked.
I am to the point of doing a complete reinstall of Windows 7 on my Desktop.
I have two computers currently running Windows 7.
-On both computers, I use an account with administrator privileges
-On both computers UAC is set at the default level.
For some reason, on one computer I am capable of saving files on the C drive without having to run a program with UAC, but on the other computer this does not work. Similarly, if I right click on a program in my C drive and click "Create Shortcut" I receive the message "Windows can't create a shortcut here. Do you want the shortcut to be placed on the desktop instead?" What I'm trying to convey by point this out is this is not a problem that I have with a particular program, but an issue I'm experiencing with the operating system in general.
I have an HP desktop running Windows 7 Professional, and a Lenovo laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium. I am having the following problem on both computers:
I cannot drag and drop files to a blank CD on either machine. If I put a blank CD-R (or CD-RW) in the drive, then open Computer, then click on the CD's icon, I get an error message: "Windows can't read the disc in drive E: Make sure that the disc uses a format that Windows recognizes. If the disc is unformatted, you need to format it before using it."If I right click, then click "Open," or "Open with," I get the same message. There are no options to format the disk.
I have tried uninstalling the drive through device manager, then rebooting and letting the computer find and reinstall it, but that does not solve the problem. I have tried running the Troubleshooter, but it finds nothing wrong.
Two interesting things to add to all this: First, My wife's Toshiba laptop works fine. I can take the exact same blank CD that my 2 computers cannot write to, put it in her's and drag and drop files to it just fine.
Second, All three computers can then read that CD, and any others that were written on her computer.
I had a Windows 7 HP system that the motherboard was going out, so I sent it back. I did a reinstall of Windows 7 at first and it had me to back up my files to a drive, so I did. I sent it back and now I have my XP system. Can I retrieve those files from that external HD and have them on my XP system?

I was having quite a bit of difficulty getting windows to install because of some memory problems and when I finally got it to work I accidently put the 100 MB's of System Files on one of my hard drives and the rest of the partition on the other drive.I wanted it all on my new 1.5 TB drive and instead the System Files were loaded onto my old 320 GB drive from my last computer. I'm only using it as a storage drive anyways.I was wondering if there was an easy way to move the System Files onto the 1.5 TB drive without having to format the drive and start over.
