Low Level Format Versus Clean All/Unconditional Format
Nov 30, 2011
I have a few questions and one of them is, what is the difference between an unconditional format and a diskpart's Clean All in the command prompt. When I read their definitions online I don't know what they differ in.

If I am not mistaking, most formats are low-level formats correct? How would I go about doing a high level format?

My neighbor's laptop hdd seemed not to be working right, he had left the laptop in the closet for 2 years anyway, so it seemed not a loss to run a utility that might bring the hdd back [might not], so I started the low level hdd pre-format from a disc I had been given.
That was about a month ago, and the 250 gb hdd is still not done. Should it really take this long, or is the hdd totalled?

I have replicated a strange occurrence involving event viewer data over and over in case I was going insane and I would like to share this story in case someone can explain this spooky occurrence! A while ago I had to use system image restore (windows 7 image restore) to restore my entire system from a backup on my external. Everything went perfect, but one day whilst exploring Event Viewer I noticed some recorded events logged that occurred AFTER my image backup and before the restore. (the very events that clued me into running my image restore in the first place). Intrigued, I low level formatted my C: drive and again reinstalled from my image back up and again all recent events up to the most recent were still there in Event Viewer. How is this possible? Do I need an Exorcism performed on my PC? I have since replicated this multiple times out of share fascination. Any thoughts or priests that I could call on?

I got my new computer about 3 weeks ago, but because the video card I picked was out of stock (GTX 680) they installed a standard video card (GT 520) instead. I'll be getting my GTX 680 tomorrow, and I'm thinking about doing a clean installation with Windows 7. I've already installed Windows 7 once when I received my computer, and made a few registry changes 'cause I have an SSD. I'm not quite sure if I should delete or format my SSD and HDD when doing a clean installation. Also, I own an Intel SSD and I read online that it's better to use the Intel Solid-State Drive Toolbox when resetting the drive to its original rather than deleting/formatting.

First what I did was use the command prompt (after using system repair disc) to completely reformat my drive c partition on my laptop. Then when I tried to install Windows with the installer cd, it just simply didnt want to boot up. I already tried setting up the BIOS so that it would start the cd/dvd drive first, and I also tried using my windows vista cd. When I used the vista cd and tried to install it on the partition some message shows up on the bottom saying "theres a problem with the hard ware" or something like that..

If I use a commercial software like Drive Scrubber to clean my HD, will a Win 7 Upgrade Discboot ? I want to eliminate any possible virus/malware. Is there any advantage to using commercial software to format, or is the reinstall format listed in the tutorials as effective? My concern is that Kaspersky Internet Security 2012 (KIS) had corrupted data bases and after removal and reinstallation did not perform well. I could not download anything, e.g. CCleaner and received Certificate Error questions on certain websites. Also, I would like a fresh registry to insure previous programs like Chrome, Firefox, KIS, remnants are eliminated.

I use a 1.5 year old aces aspire 5738z and I think it just died on me. Here is what happens. Whatever I do it cannot stay without a BSOD for more than 10 minutes. I tried reinstalling drivers and it did not change anything so I tried several things but finally just formated it and installed windows again. I actually got a BSOD while installing windows from an original CD so im pretty sure my problem is hardware related. I did a check of the ram with Memtest for approx 45 minutes (one full cycle) and found nothing. I did a quick test of the HD with an other program and it did not find anything either so im starting to think its the graphics card that is dying.
Here are some specs
Core Duo T4200
Mobile Intel GM45 Express
2x 2048MB

Once you get to the Custom (Advanced) tab of Windows 7 clean install there are options to delete the partition, format, etc. Assuming I want to delete all of my partitions so that I have one large volume C: is it best to delete the partitions first and then format? Why would someone do one over the other (or both?) Right now I have a C: partition and a D:RECOVERY partition. I want to delete the D: partition and combine it to the C: partition.Don't they do the same thing? Why do you need to format after you delete a partition ? Do I also delete the C: partition and "re-create" it? What about the term "Unallocated Space"

I am having real issues installing Windows 7, Home premium 64mb. Have formatted & clean installed it 6 times now. The PC is a new build so the HDD is fresh. It installs ok, then when asked I use my name as user name, Jon, cant type that wrong. I don't set a password just yet as I am the only user. Windows then takes me to a log in screen. I enter user name, wont let me in..!? Says incorrect password or user name!
I try to log in as Admin, I know now its disabled by default. I can get into Windows via the safe mode, so I used the command prompt to enable the Admin, yet when I went to log in as Admin, it was disabled! So I pretty much get locked out of my pc every time I install. Am I missing something simple? I cant find any answers except on how to switch on the Admin which didn't work...

I noticed when I went about doing a fresh install of Windows 7 on the HDD that shipped with my laptop, and using the partitioning and formatting options included in the installation routine, that when I'd do a format, the formatting would complete very rapidly. From this, I deduce that the installation routine does not perform a low-level format.Perhaps, from this I should conclude that a low-level format is completely unnecessary. Yet, I seem to remember reading somewhere online, at some point in time (note: this might have been back in the Win'95 days) that it's better to do a low-level format; to flip all the bits to zero.

I am giving Fedora (Ext4) the boot from my 150G VelociRaptor and replacing it with Windows 7.What is the difference between a 'Quick' format and a 'Full' format. Does a quick format simply rewrite the FAT and a full format write 0's to the sectors? The reason I ask, is that I am concerned that the Linux Ext4 formatting may leave artifacts which I can do without. So, bite the bullet and go the long route, have lunch and a nap or take the quick way out?

I am replacing an HDD with an SDD in my laptop.I have it partitioned the same way as the HDD except that D: is smaller.
system reserved, C:=system, D:=data-profiles-programs, E: =HP_TOOLS (fat32)
My plan was to image the system reserved, C: and E: partitions. The HDD is running in ACHI mode. What I want to know - When installing Windows 7, does it do something different on a SSD than a HDD such that imaging the HDD to the SDD will make a performance difference?

In Vista, I was able to sort files by date created, highlight the files I want, then sort again by name, and all the files I selected previously would still be highlighted, but now they're in numerical order. Win 7 won't let me apply that second level of sorting. It's either name or date, but not both.

For some reason my hDD on a USB 3.0 hub's partition info is now RAW and when I plug in the drive windows says I need to format it.Ive ran the program Active Partition Recovery and the file systems are RAW, within the "tree" of the program I CAN navigate through the folders and find all my data - I just cant save it using that program. So the data is still there I just need an easy program to get it. Ive tried Easus to get it but fails. I believe there's a CRC error on the drive but cant check it with CHKDSK as "the drive is not recognised".
