Lots Of Free RAM During Extraction
Feb 7, 2012
Today, i was extracting a 6GB file, unfortunately it took around 25 minutes, and my laptop specs are core i7 @ 8GB RAM. Only max of 4GB of RAM was being used as shown in Task Manager and other 4GB was free, so was wondering why doesn't extra 4GB be used and it try to extract the file much more faster ??

I like to have a lot of fonts installed on my computer but I couldn't with my old computer because it slowed down the load up time for my computer. My new computer has the following:
processor brand AMD
processor model A8 Quad-Core
memory 8 GB
hard drive capacity 1000 GB
operating system Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
processor speed 2.5 GHz
front side bus speed 4.0 GT/s
memory speed PC3-10600
memory type DDR3 SD RAM
maximum memory capacity 8 GB
video graphics AMD Radeon HD 6550D integrated graphics with up to 4089MB shared memory
audio hardware integrated audio, 6 speaker configurable
model name Pavilion p7-1225
brand name HP
manufacturer Hewlett-Packard
Am I going to be able to install a lot of fonts with this setup without slowing down my computer? If I can, is there a limit of how many I could install without running into a slower computer boot up?

For a while now I have been having this bug where my computer just keeps constantly typing zero's like this "000000000000000000000000000000000000000" without me doing anything.A few points I should mention-I have unplugged the keyboard and the problem still persists2.The issue normally starts after watching a movie, a long video or after playing a game.3.My antivirus software couldn't find anything.4.It is always fixed with a good ol' restart but it is REALLY annoying to do this.

I noticed my memory usage was at 42%, when it is usually 25-30%. I opened task manager and found 12 different processes of svchost.exe running. One of then was using 149,156 k of memory, from which I understand is a whole lot.
Is this normal? And if it isn't how do I fix it?

I have just discovered I have a lot of connections in close_wait state, I mean a lot.resource monitor shows a graph with a max value of 500 about 4/5 full so approx 400.netstat -n which doesnt show all of them as it scrolls off shows the vast majority are close_wait.the process name as shown in resource monitor is iexplore.exe, so this doesnt appear to be a generic problem for every connection but rather limited to IE, I am running IE9. Firefox also running on system isnt showing the same issue, as well as non browser apps such as securecrt and ftp client.close_wait as understand it is supposed to mean the server has yet to close the connection. But this is where my investigation ends. I only found some misleading and wrong info on the net linking it to tcptimedwaitdelay (actually related to time_wait), and a network sharing bug which this isnt it as its from web browsing.I dont appear to be exhibiting issues because of this and only discovered the issue by chance when I decided to check something with netstat. However it clearly isnt a healthy thing to have all these connections in the tcp buffers.

i specifically selected to join here for resolving an issue regarding offline slipstreaming of SP!. Though MS doesnot officially provide slipstreaming of SP1, i know we can use RT7lite or DISM to do offline slipstreaming. My daughter recently bought an ACER laptop which came loaded with minimal LINUX; and the dealer sold a windows 7 original DVD. Unfortunately it is pre-sp1. windows 7.
i thought i will use RT7lite to slipstream SP1 and also add latest post-sp1 updates before loading the Windows. ( i have my desktop running on windows 7 64bit with sp1 updated). RT7lite stops showing that Service pack not integrated properly. So i thought i will check to see manually if i can slipstream; i understand the procedure from net and this forum; i ran the sp1.exe to obtain the cab files. i extracted all files in the bigger cab (using expand command) in a flat folder. i also expanded the nestedmpp cab; i can see the update.ses and .mum files which require modification for offline (not installed). But the problem comes with Lang0.cab to lang6.cab files. Lang6.cab file is smaller and extracts quickly and without error. When i try to extract lang0.cab file (using winrar, 7-zip or uniextract) get the error message that blah~blah~blah (each time i get different file name!) file cannot be created. I then thought the sp1 file i downloaded is corrupt so i redownloaded another time (fc gives that both files are bit perfect matching!) and with this again the error comes.so i decided to look into this exactly which file is failing. Wonder of wonder, testing archive gives no error; When i open another folder and extract the files, it extracts smoothly. To be precise, winrar shows that KB976933-LangsCab0.cab has 11862 files expanding to 232 mb; after extracting about 8900 files it starts giving errors. NOW if i open another folder and extract the rest of files, it extracts them without error.
if i try to copy the files from the new folderr to the original folder i get a windows error " cannot copy "blah blah file"; The directory or file cannot be created. So i understand it is something to do with the unusally long names (winemb-errorreporting~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~fr-fr~6.1.7601.17514.cat) with ~ characters. if i rename the file as Test.cat it copies smoothly!
1) i think probably the issue is do with the unique shortname business as renaming is working;
2) i tried to change the temporary file location but it doesnot help as windows file ultitlity comes into play to copy the file from Rar$temp folder to the lang0folder.
3) i dont know if others ever had this problem and i am surprised ; i used my laptop on xp and my daughters with minixp to extract and failed;
4) as i am using en-us lang pack i am sure i neednot copy other language files as i am slipstreaming for my personal use and i dont require french, finnish or swedish or chinese strings! how i can filter them from the cab while extracting without manually scanning these file names.
5) there is no automatic renaming option to the extractor; even if it does, then the cabfilelist (which windows shall be using to use the cat file) will be all wrong.
6) i believe online updating will work as only en-us files will be extracted and updated;
7) is there a limit on number of files (based on unique short file names?) i thought the number is well beyond 30000 and not the 8892 files!
8) ASIDE: i also find two archives:: integrationcomponents.iso and precompact.iso in the extracted folder; what are they for and what should i do with them?

A few days ago I removed a virus from my computer and after some work I thought I had restored the computer back to normal. Everything seems to be running fine but now everytime I start my computer there are about 20 windows that open up. Almost seems like it is a brand new computer. Some of them are windows programs that are starting i.e. fax/scan etc that have never opened before as well as about 15 windows that open folders that say: windows-startmenu-programs-startup-then a myriad of various HP, lightscribe, games etc. It appears it is opening every file. How do I keep them from opening like before.

I probably got overly ambitious with a disk cleanup utility and now several functions of windows 7 don't work. New updates don't install, other updates that I DID install are missing, I am unable to run certain games, and I can't run SFC /scannow.However virus scan updates appear to be fine. What is the best way to fix this? I have an old backup I did with Norton Ghost on disk but something is wrong with the second disk so I can't use to to reinstall the entire backup but I might be able to extract some old files if I knew which ones to extract. I am running Window Seven Home Premium. It is a legal copy. I got it directly from Microsoft. If I try to run SFC /scannow from Windows I cannot get it to show up or do anything. Its like I never did anything. If I try to run SFC /scannow from the boot CD using this command
sfc /scannow /offbootdir=f: /offwindir=f:windows
I get this error messge:
Windows Resource Protection Could not run the repair service IF I try to run the repair outlined here:[URL]I get an error saying Windows cannot find the file specified. My computer specs are

Each time I come back to this folder, windows will take like 8 or 10 seconds to load them all. I don't think it rebuilds thumnails, which would take even much longer, no it seems it reloads and resorts.
Anyway to speed this up so it will load instantly ?

I'm a newcomer to the forums, but I've been having a problem that's been plaguing me for a long time. Whenever I am transferring a large number of small files of maybe when I am installing a game, for example, my system starts hiccuping and fulfilling simply tasks such as opening Microsoft Word take a lot longer. The processor usage remains pretty low, and it hardly uses more than 50% of my available memory.I have bought two 1TB Seagate HD's two days ago and mounted them under RAID0, for I was considering the problem was a faulty HD. The performance of the RAID is where it should be according to HT TACH, but today after installing Armed Assault 2 the same problem happened again. My system is overclocked to 3.7GHz, and I've tried running everything under vanilla BIOS configuration and the problem still persisted

I have Windows 7 64-bit running on a OCZ Solid Series 30 Gb Solid State Drive. I seem to be struggling with disk space even though I didn't install any Gb-sized applications like recent games or 3d modelling programs. I have 4Gb of RAM so I'd like to have that space free for hibernation. Why is it that if I open "my computer" the C: drive appears as having 3.75 Gb free (from 30.0 Gb) but if I open the drive directory and select everything (windows files, programs, etc) and select "properties" what appears is "22.9 Gb, 23.1 Gb on disk" which should be leaving at least 6.9 Gb free? I do have "show hidden folders and files" selected.

When doing a disk cleanup I noticed that the items suggested for deletion included Debug Dump Files and System Error Memory Dump Files. Both were exactly the same size (>350MB), which makes me wonder if one is a duplicate of the other. It's a fairly new computer which has only had one BSOD, and I knew about the memory dump and minidump files and where to find them. However, I can't find the Debug Dump File, nor do I know why it needs to be there as well as the memory dump. Also, if there is another BSOD, will the Debug Dump File be overwritten like the memory dump file is, or will I accumulate more of these rather large files?

Lots of BSOD, lock ups, hard drive not being detected by bios, is it failing? Let me start by saying my PC is custom built, most parts are only a year old. The oldest parts are the harddrive (about 5 years) and the soundcard (about 7 years). I have never had major problems until now (a year after building it).
It all started with a blue screen.
KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR
Reboot windows and it seems to start up fine, gets to the desktop and locks up.
Reboot windows and I get another blue screen.
BAD_SYSTEM_CONFIG_INFO
I try to start windows from the last good configuration. Error. Registry file failure. Cannot load hive file. I try booting from the windows cd and running a chkdsk. Hard drive starts making a buzzing sound. It gets to step 3 of 5 and stops. Failed to transfer logged messages. Status 50. Now the bios rarely even "sees" the drive. When I can get it to boot and see it, any attempt at diagnostics and repairs produces errors, locks up, or fails.
Is this a bad hard drive? I would hate to spend the money on a new one only to find it is a bad mobo or virus. How can I diagnose this? If it is a bad drive I would like to save what juice is left in it and try to recover a few files before it dies. Most of the important data has been backed up but I would like to try and get a few game save files if I can. But its not a disaster if the drive data is not recoverable.

I reinstalled windows 7 64 bit on my Samsung R580 and now a lot of things aren't working. It used to have windows 7 home premium 32 bit on it from the factory. The wifi isn't connecting, the ethernet port doesn't work/ isn't connecting to internet, the hdmi output doesn't work. I used to be able to change the brightness/volume using the FN key and the arrow keys and now that doesn't work. The taskbar used to be see through and now its a solid color and I can't get it to be see through again. I think that's because something with the chipset is wrong or the driver. There used to be a power setting called Samsung optimized and now that's not there either. I don't have any of the backup file/ disks either.

After running Windows 7 for 3 days with a single reboot my ram usage has hit a highnote of ~3.15GB(as shown in the attachment below) so my question is this, is there anyway to free up the allocated ram that isn't being used anymore? I know you can do this on an iMac but I don't know if this is possible on a PC.
Why would Windows 7 eat up ~3.16GB of ram when I do not have any programs open? Is this because of the SuperFetch service?

I want to know if there is a way to free up RAM. I have 1 GB of slow RAM and it is at 60% full when idle. No programs running either. When I click on a few programs like OpenOffice and Chrome, it shoots up to about 80% full. Are there any non-essential processes that I can just kill in order to free this up (other than the programs I'm running)?

I originally had the free space as a D: Drive but decided to reallocate the space used back onto C:. I have gotten this far but am unsure how to continue because the extend drive option for C: is grayed out. I believe this is because the space which used to be D: is still shown as an extended partition. I have a Samsung RC512 with an Intel Core i7 Quad core processor and Windows 7 Home Premium.

Just want to know how the programs that free up ram work. What exactly do they free up? Is there any of these that are good with windows 7?? Does the program actually use more ram than ram it can free up???
I'm happy with my 1.5gb of ram right now and don't want to buy more but if these programs can really free up ram then I guess why not give it a go?? Yes I also use readyboost.

Here is another issue that I've noticed with W7 in case anybody wants to know. I've been using AVG Free with Vista for quite sometime without an issue and up to a few days ago, it was going fine with W7. I hardly ever do a full scan of my laptop (a fairly new Toshiba), but a schedules scan was initiated and I let it run through. So, after about 50 minutes of scanning and presumably towards the end of the scan, I got a BSOD. I forget the actual error message, as I should have taken note of it. It's the latest version of AVG, but who knows if it truly compatible with W7 yet, so that could have been the issue. I know it isn't a conflict with another virus scanner, registry cleaner, or any other utility of the sort.
I have yet to let it run through again, but I'll get to it soon to see if it happens again.
Has anyone else encountered this issue?
