Svchost.exe Using Lots Of Memory
Dec 7, 2009
I noticed my memory usage was at 42%, when it is usually 25-30%. I opened task manager and found 12 different processes of svchost.exe running. One of then was using 149,156 k of memory, from which I understand is a whole lot.
Is this normal? And if it isn't how do I fix it?

When doing a disk cleanup I noticed that the items suggested for deletion included Debug Dump Files and System Error Memory Dump Files. Both were exactly the same size (>350MB), which makes me wonder if one is a duplicate of the other. It's a fairly new computer which has only had one BSOD, and I knew about the memory dump and minidump files and where to find them. However, I can't find the Debug Dump File, nor do I know why it needs to be there as well as the memory dump. Also, if there is another BSOD, will the Debug Dump File be overwritten like the memory dump file is, or will I accumulate more of these rather large files?

For the past few days, my computer, which usually performs well, has started becoming very slow and freezing. When I open Task manager, I notice that the user SYSTEM always consumes a lot of memory (about 1000 MB), slowing my system down to a crawl. The guilty process is nearly always svchost.exe (service-SysMain; PID-1948;Description-Superfetch).

I've been noticing lately that sometimes my computer starts working on its own. Upon hearing the working sounds, I check the Task Manager and it tells me that svchost.exe -LocalSystemNetworkRestricted is taking up to 70MBs of memory at times. Most of the time it stays at ~50MBs. Also, sometimes this same process takes up to 50% of my CPU for a fw seconds.I did a tasklist /svc on cmd.For LocalSystemNetworkRestricted, it gave me these: AudioEndpointBuilder, CscService, hidserv,

I had svchost eating into my CPU usage a lot for the past month. I usually got by by killing the process (I shouldn't have had, should I? =X). Recently, this other service wmiprvse has joined svchost in wreaking havoc in my computer.
I've read some other similar forum posts, but the solutions seemed to be vary from case to case. My comp specs follow:

I have encountered a very high memory usage in one svchost.exe process on my win 7 64-bit. Attached screen shots of process associated with it. Some times it goes up about 300Mb too. I have tried several suggestions already available for this issue. But No luck. I've tried by updating Windows (ref), scanning PC by TREND officescan. Also when I tried with only with Microsoft Services using Selective Startup option in msconfig as suggested here, issue remains same. (With that can I conclude that it is related with malware?)
Also need to note that the WLAN AutoConfig service (wlansvc) associated with that svchost.exe make sense as I've encountered some problem uninstalling wireless router software.I feel that that has not been properly uninstalled. how to check/or rectify it.

couple a times a week something suddenly is eating up all my availible memory. some weeks ago i could se at the resource monitor that is was the svchost.exe, that has these services in use as seen in screenshoot, but now the resource monitor don't show svchost as a big mem hugger anymore. any help? my computer barely moves when this happens, only remedy is a reboot. it is usually at 99% use.opera always use alot of resources, but that only 5-15% so it is not that, the picture is to illustrate what programs that is running and svchost don't show up anymore as a mem hugger, and i don't know if it still that service that still use alot of mem or anything else?

Am I going to be able to install a lot of fonts with this setup without slowing down my computer? If I can, is there a limit of how many I could install without running into a slower computer boot up?

I have just discovered I have a lot of connections in close_wait state, I mean a lot.resource monitor shows a graph with a max value of 500 about 4/5 full so approx 400.netstat -n which doesnt show all of them as it scrolls off shows the vast majority are close_wait.the process name as shown in resource monitor is iexplore.exe, so this doesnt appear to be a generic problem for every connection but rather limited to IE, I am running IE9. Firefox also running on system isnt showing the same issue, as well as non browser apps such as securecrt and ftp client.close_wait as understand it is supposed to mean the server has yet to close the connection. But this is where my investigation ends. I only found some misleading and wrong info on the net linking it to tcptimedwaitdelay (actually related to time_wait), and a network sharing bug which this isnt it as its from web browsing.I dont appear to be exhibiting issues because of this and only discovered the issue by chance when I decided to check something with netstat. However it clearly isnt a healthy thing to have all these connections in the tcp buffers.

A few days ago I removed a virus from my computer and after some work I thought I had restored the computer back to normal. Everything seems to be running fine but now everytime I start my computer there are about 20 windows that open up. Almost seems like it is a brand new computer. Some of them are windows programs that are starting i.e. fax/scan etc that have never opened before as well as about 15 windows that open folders that say: windows-startmenu-programs-startup-then a myriad of various HP, lightscribe, games etc. It appears it is opening every file. How do I keep them from opening like before.

I probably got overly ambitious with a disk cleanup utility and now several functions of windows 7 don't work. New updates don't install, other updates that I DID install are missing, I am unable to run certain games, and I can't run SFC /scannow.However virus scan updates appear to be fine. What is the best way to fix this? I have an old backup I did with Norton Ghost on disk but something is wrong with the second disk so I can't use to to reinstall the entire backup but I might be able to extract some old files if I knew which ones to extract. I am running Window Seven Home Premium. It is a legal copy. I got it directly from Microsoft. If I try to run SFC /scannow from Windows I cannot get it to show up or do anything. Its like I never did anything. If I try to run SFC /scannow from the boot CD using this command
sfc /scannow /offbootdir=f: /offwindir=f:windows
I get this error messge:
Windows Resource Protection Could not run the repair service IF I try to run the repair outlined here:[URL]I get an error saying Windows cannot find the file specified. My computer specs are

I have a folder with 3100 images, set to display large icons, sorted by date.
Each time I come back to this folder, windows will take like 8 or 10 seconds to load them all. I don't think it rebuilds thumnails, which would take even much longer, no it seems it reloads and resorts.
Anyway to speed this up so it will load instantly ?

I'm a newcomer to the forums, but I've been having a problem that's been plaguing me for a long time. Whenever I am transferring a large number of small files of maybe when I am installing a game, for example, my system starts hiccuping and fulfilling simply tasks such as opening Microsoft Word take a lot longer. The processor usage remains pretty low, and it hardly uses more than 50% of my available memory.I have bought two 1TB Seagate HD's two days ago and mounted them under RAID0, for I was considering the problem was a faulty HD. The performance of the RAID is where it should be according to HT TACH, but today after installing Armed Assault 2 the same problem happened again. My system is overclocked to 3.7GHz, and I've tried running everything under vanilla BIOS configuration and the problem still persisted

I have Windows 7 64-bit running on a OCZ Solid Series 30 Gb Solid State Drive. I seem to be struggling with disk space even though I didn't install any Gb-sized applications like recent games or 3d modelling programs. I have 4Gb of RAM so I'd like to have that space free for hibernation. Why is it that if I open "my computer" the C: drive appears as having 3.75 Gb free (from 30.0 Gb) but if I open the drive directory and select everything (windows files, programs, etc) and select "properties" what appears is "22.9 Gb, 23.1 Gb on disk" which should be leaving at least 6.9 Gb free? I do have "show hidden folders and files" selected.

Lots of BSOD, lock ups, hard drive not being detected by bios, is it failing? Let me start by saying my PC is custom built, most parts are only a year old. The oldest parts are the harddrive (about 5 years) and the soundcard (about 7 years). I have never had major problems until now (a year after building it).
It all started with a blue screen.
KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR
Reboot windows and it seems to start up fine, gets to the desktop and locks up.
Reboot windows and I get another blue screen.
BAD_SYSTEM_CONFIG_INFO
I try to start windows from the last good configuration. Error. Registry file failure. Cannot load hive file. I try booting from the windows cd and running a chkdsk. Hard drive starts making a buzzing sound. It gets to step 3 of 5 and stops. Failed to transfer logged messages. Status 50. Now the bios rarely even "sees" the drive. When I can get it to boot and see it, any attempt at diagnostics and repairs produces errors, locks up, or fails.
Is this a bad hard drive? I would hate to spend the money on a new one only to find it is a bad mobo or virus. How can I diagnose this? If it is a bad drive I would like to save what juice is left in it and try to recover a few files before it dies. Most of the important data has been backed up but I would like to try and get a few game save files if I can. But its not a disaster if the drive data is not recoverable.

I reinstalled windows 7 64 bit on my Samsung R580 and now a lot of things aren't working. It used to have windows 7 home premium 32 bit on it from the factory. The wifi isn't connecting, the ethernet port doesn't work/ isn't connecting to internet, the hdmi output doesn't work. I used to be able to change the brightness/volume using the FN key and the arrow keys and now that doesn't work. The taskbar used to be see through and now its a solid color and I can't get it to be see through again. I think that's because something with the chipset is wrong or the driver. There used to be a power setting called Samsung optimized and now that's not there either. I don't have any of the backup file/ disks either.

Yesterday, I installed Foxit Reader, then decided I didn't like it. When I attempted to re-install, I received the error message that "the windows installer service could not be accessed." It was listed as running in the services applet of administrator tools, but would not work. While then exploring the system, I found other things that wouldn't work--for example, audio, which is what put me on to the same problem last May--and others. I got many "class not registered" errors. SFC won't run. When booting to the CD and running SFC, I got the old message about a pending repair, although I can find no trace of one. Ran malware scanners, of course, and the system came clean. Clean boot was not useful. The most significant thing I have found, which is probably at the root of this, is that in task manager, there are no instances of svchost running, unlike the usual ten or fifteen that normally run.I had this problem in May, and ended up doing a complete re-install of Windows 7 Home Premium. I would like to avoid going through that again. It's difficult with visual impairment. There is one potential similarity to now and the situaton in May, other than the symptoms described above. In May, I had tried installing a new nvidia card, which Windows wouldn't recognize, so I took it out and when I booted back to Windows, the above symptoms appeared. Yesterday, I saw in event viewer a dcom error, which traces back to the nvidia updatus "user."

svchost is using too much bandwidth. I am monitoring with NetLimiter 3 Pro. For example, from 5 to 6 AM it downloaded 268 MB and uploaded 6 MB. This is a problem since my internet provider sets a 400 MB/day download limit, so in less than 2 hours the limit is used up. I am running Windows 7 Home Premium, 64-bit with SP 1 installed.
This problem started a few months ago. I've had this computer since December. I'm having the same problem with my wife's computer (Windows 7, 32-bit).
I have checked for malware with Norton 360, Webroot, Windows Defender, and a few other freebee programs. Other than a few cookies with low threat levels and "Power Reg Scheduler" there was nothing there. I have removed these few items. I have also run Wisefixer, that fixed over 200 supposed registry errors. None of this has had an effect.
