View 4 RepliesI have a somewhat older Dell that is more than capable of running Windows 7 (it also runs Server 2008 R2 quite nicely). The problem is that the onboard ATI graphics only has 16MB of RAM and is only recognized as Standard VGA Adapter. This is really unjust, so I obtained an NVidia FX 5200 for next to nothing and placed it in a free PCI slot.
Much to my surprise, the BIOS has no settings for disabling the onboard video. It also has no settings for instructing it to look to the PCI first. As a result, the onboard video is always active during POST.
I disabled the onboard video from Device Manager, shut down, and installed the new NVidia PCI card. I rebooted with the monitor attached to the PCI card. Nothing. I switched the monitor to the onboard video and sure enough, there it was. The NVidia had also been detected and was showing up as a Standard VGA Adapter with Code 10 -- cannot start. Not a problem, I thought. I had yet to install the NVidia driver, and the onboard video had already claimed the default VGA during POST, so this was not surprising.
I installed the recommended 96.85 Forceware drivers for the NVidia FX 5200. These are the Vista 64bit drivers. Windows accepted it without problem and I swapped the monitor back to the NVidia during the reboot. What I was expecting is that the display would be blank during boot because the onboard video is active. I assumed Windows would switch to the NVidia when it started because I had installed the driver and instructed it to disable the onboard video.
I was wrong. Blank display. I switched back to the onboard video and my display returned. The Nvidia card was recognized in Device Manager and it was showing "This device is working properly". The onboard video still had the disabled icon next to it. Yet I cannot choose the NVidia when I go to Screen Resolution and other screen preferences. It is using a blank video adapter -- looks like VgaSave.
Have I gone wrong somewhere? Or is there a more appropriate driver I should be using? Thoughts and suggestions would be helpful. Keep in mind the onboard video cannot be disabled in BIOS, nor can the BIOS be instructed to look to the PCI first for video. There are no BIOS updates available. There is no AGP slot, only two PCI slots. This is what I have to work with.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have sent in my computer to get repaired and got it back yestersay. Since then i've been trying to get it to work properly again.I can't play any of the games I used to play before I sent it in to get repaired (for example, Battlefield 3). I can start dota2 but it looks pretty messed up. My computer shows me that I have an nvidia geforce 7025 nforce 630a graphic card.Although it says in the computer description that it SHOULD have a AMD HD 6870 1GB GDDR 5. My screen isn't plugged in the graphic card, since it doesn't recieve anything from there. It is plugged directly to the motherboard. So, from what I understand the nvidia card is the integrated graphic card or am I totally wrong?Anyway, the device manager can only find the nvidia card and I cannot run any game smoothly on this computer. Before I realized this possibility I've tried to download newer drivers for the nvidia card, but it didn't help.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI was as is usually the case yesterday, to accept 8 important updates when I cam to close down my PC. I did this and after a while it closed down no problem. However, today upon starting, it was saying "preparing desktop" and it was as though I had done a clean install with all my icons gone from the task bar, and no wallpaper appearing either? I have since read online that other people were having problems including BSoD etc?! I have since using system restore, gotten it back to normal although I have had to ignore the updates again so as not to end up at square one?!

View 4 Replies View Relatedthese latest Updates have caused my various folders...music, downloads, images, docs....all my self made folders to disappear from the desktop. In addition Windows reverted back to default settings, I lost all my Firefox favourites and FF wasn't recognised anymore as my default browser, Windowes themes all reverted to default....basically a big scramble and mess. I did system restore and am back to normal...but Windows still wants to update.
What should I do? These updates are messing my PC up...but the updates are listed as 'critical'..

View 4 Replies View RelatedAfter the latest Win 7 updates on three of my computers, the CD drive does not read blank CDs. It gives an error message "Windows cannot read the disk in drive E:"etc, format the disk etc.I was always able to put a blank CD in the drive and see that it was blank or could copy files to drive. Now, it only gives me this message. I tried several different blank CDs. They work fine in my older XP computer.
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy comp broke down recently & I decided to built a new one, probably not necessary but I will add the specs below: [code] I had an old ATI Graphic Card Radeon X1300/X1500 (busted now) series card installed in my old pc, which would allow me to plug my TV with DVI-I & I could use my 23" Monitor through VGA cable in extended monitor. (& screen not referring to Cloning)However the Intel 3000 Graphic Card I am using lags alot when I play HD movies, but more importantly it doesn't allow me to use my TV output as Theater Mode.Where you play movie or video on small screen window on your primary monitor while it plays full screen on secondary screen. in ATI Cards its called Theater Mode while in Nvidia its called "Video Mirroring".Problem is New ATI or Nvidia Cards don't come with these feature anymore, I have Redeon 6790 card available but it doesn't have Theater Mode feature available, I have done 3 days worth of research so Nvidia stop the Video Mirroring feature by GForce 76xx series & ATI sort of ended by 4xxx Redeon. (I Believe)I need help finding a fast enough card that still provides Theater Mode (in 64 xp OR win 7) it can't be too old cause I do alot of Photoshop + HD Movies.
I tried using softwares like Ultra-Mon, Fusion Display & Secondary Display Video Player etc tweaked all the settings with Video Overlay etc. concluded that Intel HD Graphics series is biggest pieces of dog poo cards ever built. So please advise me which card to get which is old but fast enough & have Theater Mode or Video Mirroring feature.. (price range isn't issue nor manufacturer) however I do need to work on 64 bit to get full speed of both my processor & ram.
My wife is running a Toshiba T110-11U and this is now frozen at update 10 of 15 from the latest batch of patch Tuesday updates. OS is w7 64 bit home premium. Has been trying to install this update for more than 8 hours!

View 9 Replies View RelatedI was running both x64 & x86 version of Windows 7 RC1 build 7100 quite well till now.
I downloaded the images from MS.
Today suddenly my x64 gave the BSOD..
At the end of BSOD some ACPI error is mentioned
I downloaded the new updates & system was installing them when BSOD occured...
The strange thing is that I tried to repair thru every possible means from safe mode to EMS & by starting from the DVD but it failed.(Every try ends at BSOD)
Now the problem is When I try to boot from the x64 DVD(from which I installed) after "Loading files" the BSOD comes when screen says Windows Starting. Even before the glowing animation!
I disconnected my all HDD drives but still no success.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. The original installation went just fine, but I never did test to see if transfer speeds were any faster. The instructions specifically mention to install the software first, then the hardware. Recently, I did a clean reinstall of Windows 7 Ultimate (x64). I never did remove the card. I tried running the software with the hardware already installed. Well, the drives are recognized and all, but the transfer rate between the two drives (one is Seagate 3.0 and one is WD 3.0) is only around 50 MB/sec...USB 2.0 speed, right? So, from what I've been able to find over the past couple of hours is that I can't contact WD about the card. They know nothing, and the product can't be found on their website. In device manager, it's listed as NEC Electronics, and it seems there's been some combination of forces between NEC Electronics and Renesas.
1. I have found updated drivers and firmware for NEC/Renesas USB 3.0 cards, but they are broken down into different models or families. For instance, most of them use a number along the lines of uPD720200/uPD720200A Version 2.1.27 WHQL uPD720201/uPD720202 Version 3.0.8.0 WHQL So, how do I find out what my uPD number is, so that I grab the right files?
2. Do I need to uninstall current drivers/software, remove the card from my PC, install the correct drivers, and then install the card back into my machine (See bit about installation instructions near beginning of post.) OR can I just find the updates and install them without removing the card? If so, do I uninstall the old drivers, or just install the new drivers and firmware over the top of the existing files?
I'm new here because I've been searching everywhere and I can't find an answerRecently, I bought and downloaded The Sims 3 Supernatural, because I'm a huge fan and have all the games. Well, after I played the first time, and shut it off, my screen resolution went really big, so I adjusted that, then I noticed that my computer has been very laggy, and it recently told me it doesn't support 'Aero effects' So, I assumed it was the game, and uninstalled it. Then I re installed it, and now it is telling me that it doesn't have a graphics card to support it. I am not very intelligent when it comes to computers, and I have no idea what to do

View 1 Replies View Relatedthe problem being is the motherboard will not recognize the graphics card with the latest drives and older ones to test, the strange thing is if i take a stick of memory out it boots up in single memory mode and recognises the card straight away, likewise if i install another module to make it 6gb it fires up perfectly and plays CODMW3 no problem but if i am doing office work after about 30minutes the screen starts to flicker and black lines appear through writing then finally the BSOD comes up complaining about one of the graphics card drivers, dont get me wrong i have played COD for ages and not had a problem, i am at a bit of a loss i want 6gb memory ideally but the system becomes unstable, the system works great as an office computer with 4gb of memory but wont play videos or do video editing because it doesnt recognize the card.

View 2 Replies View RelatedMy system was working fine last week until I've installed an additional SATA HDD, windows will boot up until the windows 7 logo after that its all black screen, I've waited for hours for some response to happen but nothing happened, I've reformatted it a few times with the same outcome. I've tried resetting CMOS a lot of times but to no avail. But this evening I tried taking out my Graphics card and other peripherals and then windows boot! it boots with all other accesories(wifi card, firewire etc.) and the new HDD but when I try to reinstall the Graphics card it goes back to a black screen after the windows 7 logo!! is it a case of a busted video card? if so then why does it have display? I also checked the back of the Graphics card's heatsink and it has this white paste-like goo that has hardened, should i clean it and apply new thermal paste?
