Identify Cursor Location?
Aug 5, 2011This is my first attempt at the Windows 7 Forums. I used to be able to locate my cursor by pressing the CTRL key on the key board. It would show me where it is on the desktop.

Can't Identify BSOD?
Dec 10, 2011I'm running Win7 Home premium 32 bit, and am having my computer crash with BSOD every couple of days. The problem is the blue screen just flashes on, and then the comprestarts before I can identify the error.

Jan 17, 2013I've recently have a Sony Vaio laptop that will not get an IP addess and cannot identify networks. Both wired and wireless stay at identifying network, no internet access. At this point i've uninstalled Bonjour, reset my winsock catalog, checked the LSP, checked proxy setting - none, tried static information with no luck, uninstalled devices and reinstalled, deleted device drivers and reinstalled with new drivers, ran tweaking to reregister files, remove policies set by infections and so forth. I've scanned the PC with Combofix, Emsisoft Emergency Kit, TDSSkiller, and Malwarebytes and have found nothing. I've also removed the drive and scanned it externally. I'm almost down to a backup and reload. I've also remove IPv4 and IPv6 and reinstalled.

Jan 23, 2013My dads laptop worked fine with the WIFI for about 1,5 year, and now yesterday his computer won't identify our router. I have tried reinstalling the driver to his wireless hardware and that didnt work. I have tried with a static IP, but i wasn't sure if i did that correctly, so i can't safely say that what i did with the static IP would work either way.

May 9, 2012I have a Battery Back Up made by APC which came with software and I installed the software. Needless to say this software controls the functions of the back up,ie: How long to leave the computer on in case of power failure so that Windows may be shut down without loss of data. Somewhere, I think I read that it is not necessary to install software for battery back ups because Win 7 already has support for this. If this is true then where where can the configuration be made for the back up?

Feb 5, 2011My computer has and onboard PCIe network card and another PCI network card. I have connected my cable modem to the PCI network card using ethernet cable and have the internet on my computer working fine. This computer then connects to the other computers in my network using a hub, but it keeps putting this connection as a public network and wont share the internet to the rest of my machines even though I have the computers on the same workgroup and sharing enabled. I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit.

Jun 27, 2011I have been taking apart computers for parts and am learning some things about computers.I understand a fair bit about computers.I was just wondering how I can identify my graphics card as in Device Manager, it displays "Standard VGA Graphics Adapter".I am sure it displayed something different before I upgraded to Windows 7. I think I may be missing a driver.
Either way, I used to have Windows XP and the game I wish to play worked then, now I have upgraded, it no longer works. This could be because the driver for the graphics card was erased. I am using whatever card comes with this computer, as I have left it unaffected since the purchase of the computer, and all I have altered is the disc drive and hard drive.Ever since I upgraded to Windows 7, the game won't start and it gives me a graphics error "We are sorry, but the operating system failed to provide the window to render the game graphics in. Please consult the game manual for known workarounds that might improve the game's compatibility with your hardware.". This is for the game "18 Wheels of Steel: American Long Haul". I have checked and this game is compatible with Windows 7.
Did Not Find A Way To Identify Which Program / File Is Using This Space
Apr 25, 2011I am using 350 GB hard disk. C: is 100 which I am fine with.D: is 250 GB. (Though it is showing as 229 GB). I have used 74 GB of space in it. But "My computer" is showing as 7.8 GB free. I am unable to find what happened to another 160 GB. I did not find a way to identify which program/file is using this space?

May 13, 2012I have brought graphics card from friends old computer[DESKTOP]. He lost the driver cd and cannot remember its series or manufacturer. There is a sticker on it which says: GF 9400gt 512 mb. I installed the card win 7 booted up. It detects the card as standard vga graphics adapter, device manager says device is working properly gives me 1024x780 resolution. So I tried 9 series gf driver from nvidia. It says no compatible hardware detected. NVidia auto scan same result. How can I know which card actually i am using? If it is gf 9400gt 512 mb then what is the problem with driver. Mar 3, 2012Just today I decided to download the Windows 8 consumer preview and setup my PC to dual boot with it.I am running Windows 7 home premium 64bit and the 64 bit windows 8 on my other partition. After setting up a separate partition on my hard drive and loading windows8 to this partition, I was all up and running. I had no problems setting up or running windows 8, the problem came when I booted back to windows 7 for the first time. When I booted into windows 7, I was getting the "unable to identify network" error, and no network connectivity.
First thing I tried was simply disable/enabling my network adapter thinking it was just some hiccup. No luck there. Next I pulled the power from my router, and let it completely reboot. Still no luck. I then shut down my pc and booted back into windows 8 and sure enough I am able to get internet connectivity when I am running windows 8. This got me to thinking that when I loaded windows 8 there may be some new drivers installed for my network card that are somehow causing issues when I load into windows 7 again. Not sure how this is possible.
I was under the understanding that when I loaded Win8 to the separate partition that it would keep all it's drivers and settings there and not effect anything when I was loaded back on windows 7 (This logic could be completely wrong, I don't know). So I rebooted and loaded back into windows 7, went into device manager and uninstalled both network adapters and drivers, and rebooted into windows 7 again so it could re-discover and setup the network cards with default windows 7 drivers. This did not work either and I am still getting the same error.
PC Unable To Identify Router / Network (wired) - DNS Server Address Ping Fails
Jul 9, 2012Last Friday my main desktop crashed (lost power to the machine) and on restarting the PC was unable to "identify" the network. By identify, I mean, when using "Network and Sharing Centre" on the basic network information page, the PC shows "Identifying" under "active networks" - no matter how long I leave the PC.
PC details
Model: Packard Bell Power x-30
Processor i7 870 @2.93GHz
RAM: 8GB
O/S: Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit)
Modem Router details
Netgear N300 Wireless Dual Band ADSL2+ Modem Router
The main desktop is connected to the modem router (via Ethernet). The modem router is showing no sign of any problems itself, all the dashboard lights look ok (i.e. power is on, port 1 shows the Ethernet connection in place, both wireless bands are lit, the DSL is lit and so is the internet). The household contains a number of laptops which continue to work ok wirelessly and/or wired through Ethernet. Even mobile phones are accessing the wi-fi ok.
The DNS Server address looks ok, as that is the address of the web page to the router. I cannot access that web page (address) via the main desktop, but I can from other devices ok. Having gone through Device Manager the Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller is showing as "working properly". I have tried pinging the DNS Server address, and that fail. I have gone through a system restore to a previous point (before the day of the crash) but that seems to have made no difference either.
I have attempted to set the IP addresses (for TCP/IPv4) directly
IP address 192.168.0.3
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
And therefore forced to set the DNS Server address too
Preferred DNS server: 192.68.0.1
But I don't know what to set for the alternate DNS Server, so left blank. This seems to step me forward, in that the device/network is now identified. However the internet access is still not work, as the "DNS Server is not responding".
How To Identify "other" PCI Device That Did Not Load Correctly
May 25, 2012I'm rebuilding/resurrecting a laptop - a past-generation gaming asus unit, core 2 duo, nvidia, etc etc. its all loaded up and running, but in device manager are listed a parent "unknown" device with three sub-components underneath, unknown. so I need to fetch device drivers, but don't know what these rascals are. the big things are ok. the detail does give us the PCI info:PCI Bus 7, Device 3, functions 2-4.

When I do a save as file and I click on Desktop on the side bar it will save it to my desktop in System32/config/desktop instead of user/desktop. If I save a file instead of save as it will go to my normal desktop under user/desktop. Is there a setting somewhere to change the default desktop back to user?

Dec 14, 2012I set up Backup and Restore in the Wrong place, I believe. I set it up on my G Drive which is called HP Tools. The drive capacity is 3.95G. I began getting messages that there was no more room on the G Drive. It had only saved to the drive once.
So I went out and purchased a 8G flash drive and set it up to use that drive. Now I am getting similar notices saying there is no more space on that drive. It has only saved one restore point.
How much space do I need? In the past, with other computers, I have saved it on my C drive I believe.
