View 10 Replies View RelatedAnyways, in laptops (gaming or not), does setting the power plan to High Performance actually improve gaming (frame rates, speed and anything else) in battery mode? I'm using a laptop (not dedicated gaming, but suffices) and my games (the recent ones) slow down whenever I'm in battery mode. A couple of friends told me I should set it High Performance, which I doubted since they don't seem to be the type to change the power plan settings and more so with the advanced plan settings.

View 1 Replies View RelatedAbout 6 months ago I bought an HP laptop that came with 7HP 64 bit. I dual booted it with Linux and everything worked great until... Last week Windows crashed. Linux still worked fine and I was able to pull all of my documents off of the Windows partition and save them on the Linux partition. I tried everything I could to recover Windows. The HP discs that I purchased with the laptop, the Macrium disc I made, the HP recovery partition, anti-virus rescue discs, Hiren's BCD and a Windows 7 HP disc I borrowed from a friend. Nothing would repair it. Now I'm at a crossroads. I primarily use Linux on this machine and would like to simply run 7 as a VM. When I try this it will only run as 32 bit and the activation code will not work. Since this is on the same physical machine that 7 originally came on is there any way to activate my copy of Windows on the VM? I'm hoping to not have to buy a $100 license when I just bought a new laptop that came with 7HP.

ive set up many networks in the past with a bunch of xp machines without any trouble but now i am having trouble my first step was on the windows 7 machine, i went to control panel -> network and sharing center -> setup a connection or network -> set up a new network this is where i believe i am making a mistake of some kind, it seems that the windows 7 machine is assuming that i want to set up the network wirelessly, when it is connected to the router via Ethernet. it simply brings me to a screen that says choose the wireless router or access point you want to configure, and hangs there with a greyed out next button everything seems to be going fine on the xp machine, i created a new network called "share bear", told it that the computer connects through a residential gateway, enabled file and printer sharing, rebooted the machine, and confirmed that there was a new folder in the network places for shared documents..i went back to the windows 7 machine where it was still hanging, rebooted it, looked for the new network in network and sharing center and it wasn't there, i tried again to "set up a new network" on the windows 7 machine with the same hanging screen
I have a small network of six computers. Five of them run XP and I just added a Windows 7 machine. I've got a Microsoft Access 2003 database that all of the computers share that is hosted on one of the XP machines. The Windows 7 machine can access the Access database through the network just fine, as long as no one else is accessing it. However, if someone else on an XP machine on the network is using the file, it won't open on the Windows 7 machine. Doubling clicking the file on Windows 7 gives me the circling blue icon for a second or two, then nothing happens. If the XP user exits the database, then I can open it fine. Permissions on the XP that is hosting the database is set to allow everyone. And all the XP machines can access it at the same time.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm not too terrible familiar with all the ins and outs of networking, but I have some "basic" questions as I am looking into improving my network speed.
I'll begin with what I have on the network.
2 PCs, PS3, Xbox 360 (all wired) and a Wii (wireless).
I have a WRT54GS router currently. I'm considering getting the D-Link DGL-4500 as an upgrade. My question is, would this be a significant upgrade? One of my PCs has a gigabit Ethernet card and one does not. Will this router supply the fastest speed to each device or would it provide the speed that the weakest device was capable of to all devices on the network?
Secondly, my Internet provider offers 3 packages.
7 Mbps X 512 Kbps
9 Mbps X 768 Kbps
11 Mbps X 1 Mbps
I currently have the 1st package (7 X 512), so how dramatic would the change from the 1st to 3rd package be?
I'm primarily looking to A) Get constant good speeds when gaming B) Get significant increased speeds when streaming video etc.
Again, I'm quite new to the networking side of things, so I don't know if these questions even make complete sense, but I thought I'd ask before I try the spend and trial/error approach, so any help would be greatly appreciated.
I am using a school laptop running winxp that has 2 GB ram. But it still uses 1 GB of the page file in addition to the physical ram. I heard that windows 7 has "better" performance that xp.
I was wondering if upgrading to vista and then 7 would help reduce ram usage. I suspect it is the educational crapware loaded on the laptop that is hogging the ram with background processes and the like, but I don't see how it can take up an entire 2 GB ram + 1 GB page file.
I would like to improve the audio quality on my lap top. I am planning on buying some high quality head phones so I can watch movies and listen to music in private.
I have the HP Pavilion dv6-1245 dx, product number NV068UA. It has all of the factory hardware still installed.
Can someone help me find a good program for this. A program with equalizers and the such, options for setting diff sound types? Hope you understand what I mean. Also, did I give enough tech info?
PS: Should have asked. What are some really good/best over the ear head phones for a PC?
i can watch the videos online, such as Internet, bigpond top video, but now too much buferring time so that i can't watch anything online video program, why?

My objectives are to improve screen re-draw time and to decrease Windows' hard disk access. While there are other alternatives to consider, I'd like to invite the community to offer thoughts on two questions:
1. How to increase Window's RAM usage for paging/caching : The System Monitoring tools are showing that RAM usage is only about 30% of the 16Gb installed while Windows' hard drive caching is continuously busy. If there is a tweak to increase RAM usage, I would expand RAM memory to 32Gb.
2. Otherwise, I might install a 120 Gb Solid State Drive. Then, the question is whether using the SSD for the OS or as the cache drive as per Intel Rapid Storage
