How To Configure Remote Desktop To Save Frequent Connections

Nov 29, 2011

I once seen a user that had RDP in his Start Menu and there was a flyout of several saved connections and below the saved connections was a list of the most recent connections. How do I setup saving a list of most frequently used RDP connections?

Remote Desktop Refusing Connections

Oct 26, 2012

I am running into a unique situation with Remote Desktop that I have never seen before. I have 3 PC's, two laptops and 1 desktop, all running Win 7 64B retail. Under normal circumstances I use the desktop as the hub of my work and remote desktop into the laptops when I need. Last night I installed a MS Update that included a driver update for my MS Wireless keyboard. After the necessary reboot of that, Remote Desktop from my desktop to any of the laptops has completely stopped working. All the PC's are connected into the same switch that is connected to the internet. I can ping back and forth from the desktop to the laptop successfully. I can Remote desktop between the two laptops successfully. However, no matter what I do I can't Remote Desktop from the desktop to anything. I have tried giving all the PC's new names, creating a different workgroup and adding them to that, creating a new Admin account on the desktop and trying that. All with no success. I have also tried disabling the firewall on both the desktop and the laptops, still no success. I would uninstall the MS update for the keyboard driver, but it isn't showing up in the list of updates that I can back out of.

Configure Remote Desktop With Port Forwarding?

Sep 7, 2012

I will give you an idea of my set-up then what I am trying to do and what I have done.I have a BT router with Static IP, two wired computers, both have DHCP IPs but BT Router makes static IPs assuming computers MAC address dont change (according to BT)I am trying to connect using Remote Desktop and port forwarding for each PC e.g. 81.149.115.104:51463 The port is open when checking via [URL] but when trying to connect via Remote Desktop it times out/doesnt connect. I have set each PC to listen on the respective port in regedit but still nothing. Windows Firewall is also configured to allow connections through each port. Still nothing?

Remote Desktop Connection - Save File As XPS

Jan 4, 2011

I'm having some trouble with remote desktop connection. I have successfully configured my desktop to remotely access it. But every time I start up remote desktop connection it prompts me to "Save File As ... *.xps". The application is driven by the mstsc.exe process, so it starts up when I start my remote session. If I try to save it, it immediately prompts me again for the same thing. Also my One Note Application starts up on my client pc (Laptop) and is also triggered by the RDP connection process.

Here is what I have already tried:
- Tried to just end the Save As .. Application thru windows task manager, but since it is driven by the mstsc.exe, It also closes the remote session
- I Also checked my remote desktop settings on my laptop to check and see if there are any programs listed to start up when I connect, but no progams are set!

Also every once in a while it actually starts up without the prompt and I actually experience a perfect and smooth remote session!

No More Connections Can Be Made To This Remote Computer

Sep 30, 2011

I've got a networking problem that's left me banging my head against the wall. First though, this is a workgroup with the following machines:

Computer 1: Windows 7 32-bit used as a peer-to-peer file server, app and DB server, designated network browser, inbound VPN server (MS VPN)
Computer 2: Windows 7 64-bit used as a workstation
Computer 3: Windows 7 32-bit used as a workstation
Computer 4: Windows XP SP3 used as a workstation
Printer/AIO: Brother Laser, network-attached

Computers keep appearing and disappearing off the network except for the computer #1. In other words, on all the other machines, when you go into Windows Explorer and click on "Network", sometimes only one machine shows up; at other times, all machines show up. Mapped drives work without fail - it is just the network browsing that is unstable.

When only one computer is showing up in the list, if you issue the "net view" command, you get the message, "No more connections can be made to this remote computer at this time because there are already as many connections as the computer can accept." I'm not sure what is eating up all the available "connections". I thought that Windows 7 allows 20 network connections, i.e., 20 computers on a LAN.

I found a machine that was joined to a non-existent homegroup, and turned that all off, but it had no effect. I've temporarily turned off any firewall rules (F-Secure) that I thought may be interfering with this, but no effect. I've also looked at the lanmanserver registry keys and I'm not seeing anything other than stock settings.

Setup A Computer For Multiple Remote Connections?

Jul 7, 2011

We have a small business that consists of 5 owners. One owner does most of the work and has a Desktop set up in a home office. They do most of the document related work. This person needs physical control of the computer for most of the day. The other four either live in different locations. They need all the information that the main computer has throughout the day. Documents that change, New documents, and the ability to change anything in the documents and save them. The way its setup now is a remote login. This is extremely inconvenient since the main computer is basically hijacked when someone remote log ins. Each computer is obviously on a different network, so local networking wont work.

Is there a way that the main computer can be on, being worked on by the main person, but still be accessed by the other people at the same, or different, times to get the updates and new documents? Can we do this with what we have, or is there another way to do it?

We have thought of various things, like severs, remote log in programs, etc. But nothing really works the way we need. The closest one we found was an auto sync program. But it requires everyone to have all the files on their computer. This is slightly inconvenient because theres thousands of documents and things that everyone would have to load when one person may need 1-200, and the other needs 200-400.

Remote Desktop Connects But Remote Host Screen Stays Black?

Nov 8, 2011

I know there have been a number of posts on this subject but I have been unable to find a solution. I have 2 Windows 7 machines, both running SP1.

My HP Pavilion is running 64-bit and my Dell Latiude E6400 is running 32-bit. I can successfully RDP from my Dell and even my Apple iPad (via an RDP client) into my HP Pavilion. However, the problem is that when I try to RDP from my Pavilion into my Dell I get connected but all I see is a BLACK from the Dell machine. The only thing i can see is the Status bar at teh top telling me that i am connected. A few moments later I get a popup message telling me that the machines have failed to communicate.

I have confirmed that RDP settings are identical on the Pavilion and Dell. I have even downgraded the Dell NVIDIA graphics driver to an older version based on the recommended version on the Dell support web site.

Remote Desktop Client 6.1 Cannot Connect To Remote Computer

Aug 30, 2011

We have several remote systems that can all connect fine. I am having an issue with one box. It is a windows 7 home premium machine with netgear wireless nic. When I open mstsc to connect to a remote machine I put in the ip address and click on connect.I receive an immediate failure with the text "This computer can't connect to the remote computer. Try connecting again...blah blah"I have a server 2008 r2 with Network level authentication enabled. I have 8 other systems that are hardwired, at different geographic locations and all connect fine. I have not made any changes on the server side since this problem seems to be local to this client only. On the client I have made the following changes/observations. I have disabled the firewall, cleared the remote desktop cache, remove the MRU entries from the registry, verified that port 3389 is open via telnet. I have been bashing my head for days trying to figure out why this one box is not working. The problem occurs for every user on the box including the admin.I don't receive the box that prompts for warning if there is a server authentication issue but I think that is because I selected ignore at some point and said yes to continue. I'm not sure where that cache resides to delete that selection.

When Save Files From Programs Onto Desktop / Cannot See Them Directly From Actual Desktop

Oct 26, 2011

When I save files from programs (aka Word, Photoshop, anything)onto my Desktop, I cannot see them directly from the actual desktop. I can only see them when I open up Explorer, and click on the Desktop tab. Then all my files are visible. I thought they were hidden...but they apparently aren't.It possibly seems like a refresh error.I did find a way around this..I go to Control Panel >> Appearance and Personalization >> Under Folder Options >> Show Hidden Files and Folders. I click on Reset folders, Apply, and then OK, and my missing files pop up on my actual desktop. But from then on, any new files I save are only visible in Explorer again. I don't want to go to Control Panel everytime I have to save something to the desktop? I've run Norton and Microsoft Essentials and I have no viruses. What can I do?I just found out I can also see my files after pressing f5 (refresh)so I guess the problem is HOW do I get my computer to refresh the desktop automatically?

Save Documents On Desktop?

Oct 11, 2011

I have always been able to save documents, copied web pages, photos, etc. to my desktop. Never used to be a problem. While on a document, I would click "save as." A box would appears to the left with all he places I could save the file, including "desktop." I would just click "desktop" and he file would be saved there. The past couple of weeks, when I click "save as", the dialog box that appears to the left no longer has the word "desktop" in it so I cannot save to the desktop any more, at least this way. The 'desktop" saving option just seems to have disappeared.

I have seen some responses to this problem on various websites but I really have problems with these. They are too technical for me, an every day end user without tech expertise. Or the response suggests a round about way to save to the desktop (e.g, saving to documents and dragging to the desk top. Don't know how and don't want that much trouble. Other suggest saving to favorites and doing a bunch of other stuff. Unintelligible and too much of a hassle just to save to desktop.

Why did this simple way to save to desktop disappear and is there any way I can restore it? Please be gentle and simple. I need hand holdingI have a Dell insperon computer. Windows 7. The problem occurs on Internet Explorer (IE 8) and on Firefox 7.Driving me nuts.

I tried using google but just got hits for remotely accessing from another computer. Didn't know exactly what to search for. His HP laptop came with a remote but we've never used it.

See The Real Remote Desktop?

Feb 27, 2012

Using Remote Desktop I can connect my one Win7 machine to my other Win7 machine.

However I don't see my "real" desktop - by that I mean the remote machine spawns a sort of virtual desktop and shows me that - I can't run the graphic card control panel for instance - and if a monitor is plugged into the remote machine you just see the login screen not what I'm doing.

So is it possible to see the 'real' desktop using Microsoft Remote Desktop? Or do I have to find some other remote control software - like VNC or something like that.

Remote Access To Desktop

Feb 16, 2012

Here is what i would like to try and do. I have two computers, a Desktop and a Laptop. My Desktop sits at home, while my laptop goes with me to school or anywhere else that i need it.Now, i would like to see how i can set up my computers (or network?) so that i can access my Desktop files via my laptop online.I want to try and carry as few files on the laptop as possible, such as if ever lost or stolen, i wont have my data or files compromised/stolen.I also plan to install a SSD on the laptop, in order to try and make my battery last longer, but SSD's are still too expensive (i have a 250 HDD right now), I'm thinking of getting a 64GB SSD and trying to carry as few files as possible. Getting a 250 GB SSD is just way too expensive right now.I have heard that Windows has a thing called Remote Desktop Connection, but i have tried to use it, but i never got it to work somehow. I am running Windows 7 Home Premium.
