View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm wondering if it's possible to create or modify shortcuts that will open more than one thing. For instance I would like to open "tech overview" from my computer and it would open:
1: Control Panel
2: Manage Computer
3: System
4: Device Manager
And hopefully I would be able to add or remove things from the list to make it even more modified over time. Another example would be to open "my website" from my computer and it would open:
1: Explorer view of camera shot images
2: Explorer view of htdocs for the website
3: Explorer view of images directory
4: Explorer view of recent downloads
5: Dreamweaver
THIS TUTORIAL INVOLVES:Docking program (tested on and Objectdock) Stack docklet (I use Stack Docklet For ObjectDock by ~arshi2009 on deviantART on both RD and OD) Link Shell Extension Please choose the appropriate version for your OS. 64-bit programs with troublesome shortcuts Since you're reading this, this author assumes that you already have Stacks docklet installed and have been using it for quite some time now. You are just annoyed why 64-bit program shortcuts give you error everytime you access it inside the Stack. Therefore, THIS TUTORIAL IS NOT ABOUT:Installing Stacks docklet Creating stacks 64-bit application shortcuts are not easy to tame, especially when you use Stack docklets to collect them in groups. Some may work (in my case, Photoshop has been friendly), but mostly they appear as this ugly icon:And when you click it, a dialog will popup to tell you that it can't be opened:A workaround to make 64-bit applications shortcuts operable in Stacks docklet was provided via Aqua-Soft forums. It wasn't their instruction that bugged me but the whole process of creating symbolic links, which involves using the command prompt and selecting a proper handle that is difficult to comprehend and a total pain to newbies like me. So for those having trouble with symbolic links, here's a tip to easily create them.
1) download and install Link Shell Extension. The software will add a context menu item.
2) Head to installation folder of the 64-bit program you'd like to include in Stacks docklet. (In this example, I will use 7-zip)
3) Right-click on the folder and select Pick Link Source
4) Create a folder anywhere. But I advise that this folder should contain symbolic links ONLY so they remain organized. (In my case, I put all my configurations on a separate partition, and my SymLinks folder is placed next to my Program Shortcuts folder so they're easier to reference in case I needed to change something).
5) Open that newly-created folder. Right-click anywhere, and select Drop As then Symbolic Link. (The item you just "dropped" will now appear in that folder and it has a green overlay icon to indicate that it's a Sym Link (for some reason, mine appears in blue. I'll work this out later). It will act as if it's stored there, but it only references the original folder you have "picked". You can open it directly from there and add, delete or edit contained files, and the changes are reflected to the original folder. So it's better to leave it alone unless you know what you're doing.)
6) Open the folder you just "dropped". Find the main .exe file that launches the program and create a shortcut for it.
7)This newly-created shortcut is what you should use in your Stacks docklet. After creating your docklet that include this shortcut, you should be able to see the proper icon of your 64-bit program and click on it.
When I start Windows, Explorer always starts on it's own. The view downloads box pops up, showing this:
[URL] And asks me whether to open it or save it.
Now all of the icons on my desktop and the start menu are Explorer shortcuts although they are completely different programs.

View 2 Replies View Relatedi was really hesitant since XP worked what i at least THOUGHT was well. But Windows 7 is so much quicker and seamless. Anyways, 1st question is on XP i would drag a shortcut to the taskbar and it would then be usable and work as the original shortcut did. With windows 7 it doesn't wok.
For example, i have a text file that i keep on another drive and i put a shortcut to it on my taskbar. In XP i'd click it and the file would pop up as you'd expect. On windows 7 if i drag that text file to the taskbar, when i click the resulting shortcut instead of the file i just get a new empty notepad.
If i right click it (i THINK it was by R/clicking) then a list of various notepad files i've viewed pops up and i can choose it from there. But i just want it to be a shortcut to the particular txt file. Is there a way? second, i see shortcuts don't have the file's pathway or "address" if you will in them. I miss that for a number of reasons such as being able to tell where the file it's pointing to is, or adding switches in the target line etc etc. Is there a way to make them show the pathway?
n that Start Menu I have Win Explorer in either the pinned section or frequent programs. There's an arrow to the right of it to show the directories I navigate to frequently. The problem is this section doesnt contain the folder I need to go to the most. Is there some way to choose what folders appear in that area?

View 0 Replies View RelatedBut I'm not entirely sure if it can do one of the primary things I would like to use it for. I know it has a plethora of short-cut keys intended for gaming (12 near the thumb and 5 others spread along the mouse). What I would like to do is find a way to program these keys to do things outside of gaming. I do play games, so they will be used for their original purpose, but I would like to use the mouse as a remote control. For example, when I play music in iTunes, or movies in VLC, I would love to program some of the shortcut keys to work as volume, play/pause, fast-forward/rewind keys. That way I could sit back on my couch and use the mouse like a real remote.I've tried to Google information on how the mouse works, but every source/review site I find only presents the basics that are written on the box.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've been thinking of getting myself a nice new wireless mouse and keyboard, and I've noticed some of the high-end ones have a lot of "customizable MMO gaming keys". The Naga Epic Razer is pretty impressive with a (supposed) 17 customizable keys.

Another neat item is the Corsair k90. I want this one for it's mechanical-switch keys more than for the gaming-keys. But if I can put those keys to use... it could be worth it.

What I would like to know is... in Windows 7 itself (not the games) can you use these type of keys for certain shortcuts? Like, when I'm on the desktop, I could open up frequently used programs, at the tap of a key on my mouse? Or if I start a movie in VLC, could I link the keys to volume, play/pause or fast-forward/rewind functions?
I do game, somewhat, but these are pretty expensive peripherals. If I did buy them I would want them to be of use beyond just games. But so far as I've searched, I haven't found any indication that the keys can be used for non-gaming shortcuts.
Yesterday, a neighbor asked me what to do because all the shortcuts on the desktop, as well as everything in the Start menu suddenly would launch only Windows Media Player. Every shortcut/link on the computer lead to WMP. In other words, no program, other than WMP, could be started. Yet, looking at the Properties of individual shortcuts, the path to the exe file was correct in every case. Every exe program in the Start menu as well as all desktop shortcuts displayed the WMP icon. Going to the Program Files folder and trying to launch directly from exe files resulted in the launch of WMP. Trying to use System Tools/System Restore, going through the Start menu had the same result - WMP launched. There had been no new installation, or other change made.We finally fixed it by going to the Control Panel which did, in fact, allow us to launch System Restore and we restored the system to four days earlier. Three or four minutes later, after reboot, everything was perfect, but it was pure luck - we still had/have no idea of what took place.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have quite a few input languages enabled on Windows 7 Ultimate and I want to navigate between them using keyboard shortcuts like I used to do on Windows XP. I know how to assign the shortcuts but the trouble is that all of the shortcuts keep getting reset every time I shut down the PC and after I log on again none of them work... I can of course go to Control Panel and assign the shortcuts again but it's a bit irritating when you have to do it for 8 languages every day.Oddly enough, the shortcuts for two of eight languages that I have are automatically restored when I go to this dialog box where shortcuts may be assigned — without me making any changes other than just clicking OK. So these two don't seem to be completely lost, it just seems that Windows 'forgets' about them until I open the dialog box with the shortcut assignments.

View 1 Replies View RelatedHow can I define keyboard shortcuts for different open application windows. This is something I do in Linux and it helps a lot when I have many windows open. Example: I have Internet explorer open, I give it shortcut Ctrl+Shift+A Then for example VLC player is open, I give it a Ctrl+shift+B
Then I can just press these keys and go from one window to another. This makes a lot of sense when I have 40 windows open. Pressing Alt+tab is not as efficient as this.
I am having issues with searching for program shortcuts in Windows 7. When I type in a shortcut name in the search field on the start menu, nothing appears. Files and Control panel applets do appear though but no program shortcuts located under the C:ProgramdataMicrosoftWindowsStart Menu folder. The OS is Windows 7 Enterprise RTM 64 bit. I have confirmed that the user that is having the issue does have read and execute rights to these shortcuts because they appear in the start menu and in the appropriate folder. This is in a corporate environment so the local hard disk has restricted settings on it via group policy.
They include the following:
- Hide these specified drives in My Computer Restrict C drive Only
- Prevent access to drives from My Computer Restrict C Drive Only.
The tasks I have done.
- Confirmed the index options settings and the start menu is listed.
- Rebuilt the index and the same issue applies
