Jul 4, 2010I have a dell 1545 inspiron and I am trying to format all the drives and do a clean install of vista until I get windows 7 pretty soon. I am doing a clean install because I found a rootkit (gecko-crash) when I ran a housecall online scan. I was able to format the F drive which was vista recovery drive. But D is a system drive and contains some system files, some of which I don't recognize and one folder is titled 'Boot'. I can copy other files to D(which means viruses can copy themselves to it) and I have to format it because it might be infected as well but can't be formatted.. I keep getting 'can't format D system drive' messages.Btw I have ran spyware doctor scan, online house-call scan and nothing has showed up. But the system was kinda slow and I have to do a clean install now.

I got some System corrupt files .. I used sfc/scannow... It detected some error files but unable to repair them... next i tried chkdsk .. still problem not solved .. Problem is : Every program i try to open (.exe) it says program is not installed or if installed not in Default program or something... Also .txt files cannot be opened ... I Googled n found this problem occured wid others n the Last n Best Option is Reinstall OS .. I have never Formatted laptop since i Bought it ... This will be the first time i will be doing it .. I need proper steps to Backup what n what not .. Also My laptop came wid drvers installed and OS file / driver files or whatever is in built in C Drive n un erasable .. i.e i dont have Installation disk n i dont know where to search for Activation Key and all , coz it all came in built ..EVERYTHING when formatting n reinstalling laptop ......

Nov 11, 2012I am using a 64 bit windows 7 home premium that is shipped with my laptop. i plan on trying windows 8 and i don't want to lose my licensed system.
possible options:
1. i know that the license key is on a sticker on the bottom part of my laptop. so do i have to download the installer for home premium and use that key?? then reactivate?
2. a friend of mine says that he used recovery disk instead of windows 7 home premium ISO to restore everything.
i also tried to make primary partitions but i can only make logical ones since my system has 3 primary partitions as default : recovery, reserved and the primary C.

Jul 27, 2012I have a Toshiba laptop that came with a preinstalled copy of Windows-7 (64 bit) version purchased in July 2010. No setup disk came with the laptop, but there is a "Toshiba recovery media creator" utility.
[1] What is the better option for formatting my drive? Should I use the Toshiba media-creator or install a clean version of Windows-7 from an ISO download (am I allowed to do that? If so, what is a good site to download?) There is a "sticker-certificate" on the bottom of my laptop with a product-key. Will it work with the new install?
[2] Do I have the option of installing a 32-bit version of Windows-7 instead of 64-bit with the above license? The reason is that most applications I use are 32-bit and hence a 32-bit OS is better suited for me. But does the license allow me to do that?
[3] (The tricky part) - Since I have a good 320GB HDD, I want to dual-boot by creating two partitions - with a linux distribution (Ubuntu/openSuse) running on the second partition? Assuming I don't have the option of clean-install, will I be able to create the extra partition for linux using the Toshiba utility?

Feb 17, 2012New laptop with Win7 pre-installed. No Win7 CD. Laptop HDD came with separate recovery partition. Burnt recovery CD and backed up HDD to seperate USB HDD. Then laptop was dropped. Laptop won't boot past blank win7 desktop(with curser). Tried running HP recovery program from recovery CD but program says no recovery partition found and once again, will not boot past blank Win7 desktop. Can't get to chkdsk to run HDD fix.
With the Win7 stuff that I have, I can't get to any point where I can even determine if this laptop HDD is fixable? Is there a Win7 iso file that I can download to boot into Win7 so I can then run chkdsk and then access my backup original installation on my USB external HDD? If not, can I use one of my old original Win XP CDs to boot the laptop, run chkdsk or maybe even reformat the drive NTFS, and then install my backup Win7 setup from the external USB HDD over the now XP installed HDD?
