When I go to "C:Program Files (x86)" I can't seem to find a folder that I'm looking for but, when installed the program that created the folder it took space in my hard drive and when I start the installer again and it asks me to select from a drop-down menu the location in which I want to install the program to, it shows me the folder previously installed...
View 9 RepliesI've been using the computer for a really long time but I don't have a clear understanding as to why or how certain OS's are set up the way they are...I'm curious to know why in Windows some of the same folders are stored in multiple places? This has always been an annoyance to me when it comes to organizing and remembering where everything is on my computer. Sure they're are ways to search for things but I feel that still takes up too much time and bottom line there's just gotta be a easier way to access your files. I have multiple computers and it's just impossible for to me remember where everything is.... I could be missing something on how to get a hold of it but anytime I look up how to organize your folders it still doesn't seem efficient to me. I have my own ideas on how I would like it to work or what I would like microsoft to do but I"m not a computer tech person who is able to understand if my ideas would actually even work or not.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've come accross an unusual problem that I've never seen before.'m on windows 7 home premium 64 bit.I have a Library called "work". Its actually located in my documents folder.In this folder I have WorkDiscsubuntu. As you may have guessed I work with linux on occasion.I wanted to create a new folder here but the new folder button was missing from the toolbar and the context menu.I can create a new folders elsewhere just not here.I thought as an easy workround I would create a new folder in the parent directory and simply move it. I created it in workdiscs and then moved it into "ununtu" only to find it wasnt there.If I navigate to the real location of this folder the new folder is there ok.
Then I thought if this folder is playing up I will create a new one and just delete this one so I created workdiscsubuntu2 and moved all of the contents of ubuntu to here.So far so good.I then created 3 new folders here "1004" "1010" and "1104" I then moved all the files from ubuntu into these folders.To be clear now workdiscubuntu2 should now contain 3 folders and no files.I then deleted ubuntu and renamed ubuntu2 --> ubuntu.I then double clicked on the new "ubuntu " folder expecting to see 3 folders yet I see the contents as it was before I started. If I call it anything other than ubuntu I see the contents fine but if I name it ubuntu it reverts to its old state.
We have a Windows 2003 Domain and just got some new Windows 7 professional machines.. The problem I am having is that the Accessories, Startup, and maybe other folders are missing from the start menu..
If I login as the Domain admin I get them.. The user is setup as a local machine admin, but they are missing.. We are not blocking anything in Group policy on the domain that I can see.. I have looked numerous times. everyone keeps pointing to the folder being hidden..
This is not the case.. Is there a domain level policy that controls this??
I am running Windows 7 and have various Folders on the C drive, including Pictures (C://Pictures). When I open it the folders and pictures are not there yet when I right click and look at Properties it tells me there is 17.7Gb of files. I thought I had resolved the issue by going back to the restore point for the main folder (C://Pictures) and indeed they became visible again. On checking the folder this morning they have gone again. I have the same problem with my (C://Users Documents) folder - clicking on Properties tells me there are 697Mb of docuemnts but 'hovering' the cursor I'm told only 497Mb are there & the missing folders and documents are not visible.
The problem began after picking up malware which I have successfully removed from the machine at the weekend. I did use the Restore Points to successfully restore a music folder as the same problem occurred and it is still there! The Restore Point I used has now 'moved on' so I am unable to use this facility.
I think this problem is with the OS. I am using Windows 7 on my laptop (lenovo g560) 4gb ram etc. Every time there is some updates something goes wrong with my laptop. First my USB DataCard got blocked and I had to re-install everytime I use it. Then my DVD disappeared and it took my 4 day to get it back (believe me it came back acccidentally, I cannot provide you the steps I did to get it back). Today morning there was an update and the system was requesting for a restart. I postponed it twice because I was into serious time critical work. And people let me tell you, when I left the laptop idle to take a break it got restarted on its own and when I logged back in, all my work is gone. Not even a trace of the folders and files.I dont understanding why they have to push us for updates when they are not sure about their updates.

View 3 Replies View RelatedEverything was working fine until yesterday. This morning when I woke up, I realized that 3 folders were missing from my Desktop. The folders had all my articles I wrote for publication. There was nothing else in each one.I tried every possible way to find the files again but no luck. Basically the 3 folders are GONE(VANISHED)in the blue. I tried to search the files name but there is nothing on my computer. It is not that the folders are hidden because they are not as I have searched by folder names and file names but nothing comes up.I tried all sort of Recovery Tools but no luck, the problem is that none of them are detecting the files as deleted. So I am not sure how can I restore them if they are not found as deleted at first place.When I try to search for a file name like I had an article named "child problems.odt" I get results in my Explorer but they are not actual files but rather Type: Shortcut in the folder/Recent.There were about 60 articles and it took me more than 3 months to write. Can someone please help me here. I am disperate. I tried to do a disk scan for problems but no luck. I ran antivirus scan but no luck..I do not have limewire or any other p2ps. It is my work computer.

I was trying to get into a hidden subfolder to delete a file from a old program. It asked for admin person's. I hit Ok and it look about 10min for windows to update the folder. The problem is that after that now all my folders in my profile are gone. My music, pictures, and everything. I rebooted and loged back in but they are still all gone. How can I my profile folders back? I know there is just something I need to uncheck. I can see that all the information is still in my laptop because checking my HD space I see that nothing was deleted since I have over 50gigs of music.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI screwed up today. While meaning to delete files from AppDataLocalTemp, I accidentally deleted (many) from AppData. [Sidebar: Is there any way to configure the file explorer such that deleting from the folder view is disabled?] After a brief panic, I downloaded (from another machine) the utility Recuva64 and restored the missing files to a separate drive, after which I copied them back to where they belong.
But, there was a problem - I could not copy files from the recovered folder Credentials to LocalAppDataCredentials. Even stranger, I did not have permission to view the security credentials of LocalAppDataCredentials. I tried booting to safe mode to fix this, but both folders were gone - the recovered one as well as LocalAppDataCredentials.
So, my system is up and running, but the folder LocalAppDataCredentials is missing. I tried using Recuva64 again, but it did not find the folder. I also looked in an older backup of my profile, but again, I did not see the folder. The folder does, whoever, exist on my notebook (but whose to say if the information is consistent).
Had system crash due to bad memory. Had to do a clean install as the MBR was broken and none of the MBR repair methods would fix it. This was about 6 wks ago. I have just discovered while trying to install 3rd party photo editing suite that there are no VC90.CRT folders in the Winsxs folder. I have tried to copy all the VC90 files from my lap top via usb stick, to this machine. Winsxs is read only and no amount of trying will get the file attributes to change. Is there anyway to get these files installes without another repair/reinstall/reactivate scenario?

View 10 Replies View RelatedI have a good sony vaio from 2010 with a win7 home premium, 4 Gb Ram, 500Gb HDD, 50 Gb available currently. I know various System32 files are missing from information from a HijackThis Scan yesturday, eg lsass.exe. Explorer.exe does not handle folders well-double clicking should open any folder but instead it defaults to trying to open it with the first available software in the context menue, which happens to be VLC Media player. This is a known problem, to do with registry damage and/or windows explorer, not to do with VLC. I have been diligent with updating drivers, and am currently using Slimdrivers to identify further improvements to my driver lineup.
I will add a scan results from tweaking com windows repair after this post. Avast interenet security and Malwarebytes are up to date and scan have found nothing lately. MBAB had to be uninstalled and reinstalled today due to some sudden loss of the signatures update file(I think), but is running well again now. I wish to go through a range of tests and find out about some procedure to restore these corrupt system files. I am an advanced home user but have run out of idea with this problem.
I've almost given up on trying to install Windows Mail (WM) on my new Windows7 laoptop. I am really having a horrible time trying to recover/import my WM data from Vista, into Windows Live Mail (WLM). First, when I run the Import function on WLM, I can see my 20K+ emails all being imported, however, these don't seem to be displayed anywhere. What am I missing? I am most concerned with the folders and sub-folders I created in WM, because WLM has a completely different format that separates each email account. So I can't exactly understand how the emails in the folders will be distributed.
View 3 Replies View RelatedSorry if this has been asked before-I did a search but didn't find it. I just got windows 7 after having xp. It was a new install on a new hard drive. I have 32 bit.I use carbonite so I did a selective restore. Now it seems like some files are in more than one place. I'm not talking about the libraries-I understand how those work. I'm talking about going to my c drive. For instance I have home videos that I am in the process of copying to dvd from vhs tapes. I ran Auslogics dupe finder and it shows them in 3 different locations. C:users:owner:video (I know I don't have all the symbols in there-this is just to give an idea of where) and also C:users:owner:documents:my vidoes and also c:documents and settings:owner:videos.
So I selected files that were in the 2nd and 3rd location to delete and when I did, they also deleted from the first location. So are they not in all 3? If so why does Auslogics show that they are duplicates? I am restoring them now but I would like to avoid duplicates because it only makes my carbonite backup bigger than it should be. The same is happening with other files too. Are they all just mirrored with different paths somehow?

I have wireless network set up at home, and file sharing.
I have 1 win 7 computer and 2 XP computers. I have no prob from Windows 7 getting into XP shared files on network and sharing printer, etc.
My prob lies when I try from my XP computers to see the Windows 7 computer in the network places. It is not there. I can see it in workgroup computers, but can't do anything with it. I try to add it in network places, but it cannot find it by browse or direct typing.
On Windows 7 computer I have it marked to share, have passwords turned off, I have tried to create a homegroup and have removed the homegroup, cause I cannot figure it out.
I am able to access Windows 7 shared files from PS3, so don't understand why I can't from XP. help?

On my HP G62 355 DX laptop I used to be able to type a letter to a friend or business and then print it on my HP 1050 series deskjet printer. It would print as typed with paragraphs where I put them. NOW either the computer or printer picks the spot to begin a new paragraph, which is often in the middle of a sentence. The tool bar commands in Word seem to work except for the justify, paragraph selections. The only thing I have done differently is update the printer driver from HP. (not a place I like to go to, btw) But it started this before the update. Last night a post on a W7 forum made reference to Javascript being disabled (mine is) might relate to this problem

2 Windows 7 PCs (Home Premium)
1 Vista PC
3 Windows XP PCs
1 Netgear NAS
all in workgroup "WORKGROUP"
all assigned static IPs
Up until today every computer could see every computer on their respective My Network Places screens. The XP machines could see all the shares on the NAS and could see and connect to any other computer by just double clicking. This morning the windows 7 PCs can see each other + the Vista machine and can see the NAS listed under storage but not under 'Computer' like it used to. The XP machines can see each other but not the NAS.
Every computer can ping any other one. Any computer can type the computer name (e.g. \NASshare works) and that gets it temporarily instated into the network places on Windows 7. We recently went through and assigned static IPs to every computer (before the issue). Resetting them back to DHCP isn't really an option (unless it's the only way to fix the issue, but I don't think it should be)
I've combed the net and I can't find anything that directly solves my problem. I've checked permissions, checked that simple file sharing on XP was off, checked that it's being let through firewalls, checked that file sharing was enabled in the network settings windows.

After getting a link made for my web site in my network places i could then upload files by draging and droping them to the folders and now front page would open this link to so i could directly open my web site for edditing it. Is there some weres in windows 7 that i can add my web site addy to connect to it for uploading and to use it to log on with frontpage.

I got home and started to work on the file, then when I pressed save it said 'cannot find location, insert removable storage device into drive d' (or something like that) so I 'saved as' in another location, then checked my 'recent places' folder. Sure enough there was evidence of a removable disk being modified on my laptop whilst I was at work. I confided this to my house mate, checked my laptop again later that night and it had been deleted from the recent places folder. I now want to confront that person about what happened as it is now obvious to me that they had copied my file, but wondered if there's any way I can get the evidence back. I have tried the undo button, but to no avail. This happened on Tuesday (8th).

My Laptop wireless always loves to obtain the 10.0.0.1 which is the ISA router/firewall. Obviously there is an IP conflict here because the TMG/ISA server/GATEWAY already has that..
This only happens after a reboot and the IP settings that it "desires" are the following:
IP: 10.0.0.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.1.1
DNS: 192.168.1.1
It should be....
IP: 10.0.0.101
Subnet Mask: 255.0.0.0
Gateway: 10.0.0.1
DNS: 10.0.0.4 = MY DNS
DNS: 10.0.0.5 = MY DNS
Should I delete the network controller, or do I have to delve into the registry to get this crap sorted out? The Laptop ALWAYS connects to the N router but has a problem assigning the IP where it will just assign a bad IP or "first ip" in the sequence. There are times that I need to get beyond the firewall, and I need to assign it a class "c" but I don't understand why this should be having a bearing upon future connections. I have repeatedly reset the "arp" and DNS; to no avail.
I have typed this command at my last chance:
"netsh int ip reset c:
esetlog.txt"
When I open or save a document in pretty much any application in Win 7, I no longer see the places bar on the left side, instead I see a Windows Explorer type of tree

View 3 Replies View RelatedSo, I wake up today and BitDefender scans and detects some virus'. During this time, I'm getting a few prompts which I close. At one point, I click the windows logo AKA start button, then go to All Programs and I notice that my list is pretty much empty. At first, my C:Program Files also wasn't showing up. I guess the virus hid those files, because they showed up once I unhid them via the folder options.Luckily, I think I may have been able to get rid of the irus/trojan/malware/whatever. I'm still going to be running scans, butunfortunately I have to work from my computer at the same time. I can go to into C:Program Files to find programs I want to use and start them up, but I would much prefer they appear in the "All Programs" listing.Windows 7 - Home Basic 64-bit
