I burnt a disc with various files on it, basically two folders and only one of the folders shows up in Windows, while both show up in Linux. The disc was burnt in Windows and so shouldn't be using an extension that isn't supported by Windows
View 7 RepliesFirst of all, I apologise if this is the wrong forum, but I don't know where the cause of this problem lies.I have a Windows 7 64 bit PC which until recently was working fine, including burning data DVDs (ebooks, zip files, text files, etc). ABout a week or two back, though, the discs I burnt began to turn out corrupt, with Nero reporting errors when verifying the discs. Whenever I reformat my PC and install the drivers and programs I make a disc image of the C: drive, so that I can reapply this image back to the drive at any point in the future, effectively rolling back the hard drive to the day when I reformatted and reinstalled everthing, so I applied the image to the C: drive, thinking that this would cure whatever file corruption was causing Nero to burn corrupt discs.
This failed to cure the problem, so I assumed that the DVD drive was failing, so I bought a new one, which exhibited the same problem. I tried other software (CDBurnerXP and Ashampoo) and they produced the same corrupted discs (some of the files on the disc had errors, just like with Nero, but the data on the hard drives itself was fine). So I tried burning a virtual disc image from Nero, and it turns out that the disc images Nero makes have the same corruption (which staggered me, as if the problem is purely software then I'd have thought that when I applied the C: drive backup image over the C: drive that would have solved the problem). Someone suggested it might be a rootklit, hiding in the boot block of the drive (I'm not well up on drive fundamentals, can a virus/rootkit hide in the bootblock and escape a C: drive re-imaging?) so I tried Combofix and others, and Combofix detected some 'suspicious' items and deleted them, but the problem still persists.
I tried four seperate Linux boot discs, as that way I could bypass the hard drives totally, so if I got the same error with Linux then I'd know the problem was hardware based, but Ubuntu, Mint, and Mageia all stuck mid-boot, whereas I managed to get Puppy linux to work via it's VESA setting, but the burner software in Puppy Linux (when I'd finally worked out that I had to mount the Windows 7 drive for the data, and how to then find the drive in the file system) just threw up an error - I can't remember what the error was now, I'll post it up when I get home later). I'm a *total* beginner to Linux, so please can anyone help me to get Ubuntu etc to load, so I can burn a DVD using Linux, to see if it's a hardware or software cause of the DVD-R data corruption?
Anyway, I removed all three of my hard drives, inserted an old IDE drive that had never been in a PC before, formatted it, and installed Windows 7 and Nero, and it too produced corrupted virtual disc files, and I'm 99.999% certain that no malware/rootkit could have infect that new (to the PC) hard drive, so I think the problem here is hardware, but I'm not sure.
So it was working fine, i turned off my computer and went to bed, when turned it on the next morning the drive was no longer showing up so i checked disc management and it was in there as unallocated, the only options that are there when i right click are:Im running Windows 7 ultimate x86 (32bit) on PC and the External Hard Drive is a Western Digital 1TB Model WD 070A USB device.

I can't copy files to the folder, nothing appears when I paste them. If I look at the properties of the disc it says all the space is used, but its not. It looks like it has been finalizedI tried on a new disc, burnt some files to it, but couldn't add any more.
View 5 Replies View RelatedThe loading bar for makes a tiny bit of progress. When I cancel the process, some files did successfully copy. It seems to just get stuck on .bin files.There is not error message or crash, it simply the bar just stops moving. It even still reports the speed (always incorrectly, the real speed is 0).While this has happened before with another disk, I have copied .bin files from disks lots of other times without any hiccups, so it must be something about these specific disc and not my computer. Also, I doubt this means anything: The icon rather that being the usual generic .bin icon is the VLC traffic cone, and under file type it says "VLC media file (.bin)."
View 4 Replies View RelatedI had an old P4 system that the PSU went out on, so while I was at the store getting a new PSU, I picked up a copy of Win7 also. Put the PSU and Win7 in and the next day, the Motherboard died. Went and bought a new i-core motherboard, processor, memory and video card and put it together using two drives. The one Sata drive from the old system is a 1T that has the Win7 from the other system on it along with about 75 movies, 500 pictures and 1500 songs. I used a 250 gig SATA to load the Win7 onto the new system. So now the new system is running off the 250gig and all my files are on the 1T drive along with the old Win7 folder. I want to delet the old Win7 folder but it won't let me giving me a message saying I need permission from a trusted installer to remove these files.

And it's always this file: desktop.ini So, how can I stop that annoying message?
For some reason, the transfer rate on my 2TB Western Digital internal hard drive has dropped through the floor. I'm not sure what has happened but when when I try to copy files on HD I'm only getting a maximum transfer speed of 4MB/second, which is abysmal. For example, as I write I'm doing a test copy of a folder (to another folder on the same drive) containing 90 gig of misc. files. Windows is reporting that this transfer will take around one day to complete!
I error checked the drive and it came up healthy, and in all other areas, it seems to be working fine. All these problems seem to have started since I decided to reformat the hard drive and reinstall Window, a job which I've done on this particular setup at least a couple of dozen times before with no problems at all. I must say though that installing Windows was SLOOOW this time though, a lot slower than normal, and I'd say it took about 3 times as long to do as normal.

I tried copying some .jpgs in subfolders from a different machine and pasting them onto the Acer. The copy and paste processes looked entirely normalOn the Acer MyPictures properties shows 2.95 GB with 456 files and 24 folders which is correctHowever with the exception of a couple of sub folders none of the .jpgs can be seen in Windows Explorer.Start>Searching for .jpg shows all the files with a path C:UsersuserNamePictures even though I only saved them in C:UsersuserNamePicturesMy Pictures . Not all the copied sub folders can be seen but those which can be seen show in both locations. Using Search it is possible to open and view any of the images whether or not the sub folder in which they are stored shows in Pictures and My Pictures.

I am having a problem with my Windows 7 Pro edition when burning data to a CD-RW.When I add new data to existing data already burned on the CD-RW, the data has been written correctly to the disk, but when I view the disk after writing the new data, I never see the new data...the only data I see is the data that was written to the CD-RW at the FIRST burning. When I place my CD-RW in my other computer with Windows XP, all the data appears...initial burning and all subsequent burnings; place it in my Windows 7 CD drive and NO secondary data is showing.In one program I have for burning, I actually get a dialog box saying "the data has been written correctly to the disk, but the number of files does not match the expected file count. Most likely, the file system structure has not been written correctly and some files will not appear on the disk." What is going on with this "file system structure has not been written correctly?"This is a new wrinkle in the sheet for me. I have 5 CD/DVD read/write drives, and they all work the same...only initial files show and other files are not visible when re-burning to a CD-RW. It is really a new Agatha Christie mystery to me.
View 2 Replies View RelatedWhile I work on worksheets, I often save the files to the desktop for easy attachment to emails when I have completed my work. On two occasions now I have been saving the files to the desktop as I usually do but when I go to the desktop the files are not there.If I look in the desktop folder, they are there. Running 64 bt Windows 7 Professional and scan for Malware yielded no issues.
p.s. When I reboot the files do appear on the desktop ....
I picked up a virus and had to use the reinstall option on Windows 7.
The big problem is that my 1TB secondary drive is not letting me access files (the drive is still showing space used, I just can't see it).
I have a couple months worth of pictures I'd really like to not lose.
I use a 64gig SSD for a boot drive and everything else is set up on the mechanical 1TB drive. This was a clean install about 9 months ago, both drives were new and I used a full version of Windows 7.

View 1 Replies View Relatedthe little black arrow is there but no matter how many times I click it I can't see the recently used files.The same thing affects the taskbar menu (or whatever you call it), only these two options are available although I have watched many videos with VLC. This is happening only with VLC Media Player and IIRC only with the few latest releases of VLC (I'm now using the latest one, v.1.1.1).

View 4 Replies View RelatedRecently my computer was attacked by a virus. The virus made it so I couldn't access my C drive at all, but could still use all my start up progams. For some reason it also erased all of my desktop icons, except for diablo2 LOD (don't know why that one was still there....). Anyway, after removing viruses with malware bytes I did a system restore to about 2 weeks prior. After the computer was done everything seemed fine. Computer was running fine etc. My problem is files that were contained in my folders seem to have disappeared.
I know the files are still on the hard drive, but some of my folders disappeared (these are folders I created long before what the restore date was) making me unable to access the files unless I remember their names and can type them in the windows explorer. I discovered the files were still there when running a video game emulator, i clicked open rom, and just typed in the file name of one of my games I couldn't get to through my computer anymore, and it worked, game loaded up. How I can get my folders to come back, so I can easily access the files in them.
I did a search on this and could not find anything. Once in awhile my desktop will have a bunch of random files I deleted a long time ago. I always empty it too. There won't be anything in the recycle bin or on the desktop and then I'll go to look at it after awhile and some other group of files will be there. I have tried the whole "rd /s /q C:$Recycle.bin" on every drive on my computer. Windows is installed on C:. It isn't even the same group of files each time, it is just random files I've deleted over the past 2 months. I noticed a folder for a demo install of InDesign comes up a lot and says it is in use when I try to re-delete it, could Adobe's crap software be breaking it?
Windows 7 64 Ultimate, 12 gigs of ram, I7 processor. Hard drives are at most half full.

All of a sudden, when I click to view my folders, they are completely empty. When clicking on the My Computer option, my hard drive is there, showing 76 GB free out of a total of 232 GB, but everything appears to be gone. When I click on those files, I receive the error stating I am afraid to re-start or unplug my hard drive.

1. Outlook can not open the folder that has the files for opening, sending or receiving email.
2. Outlook can not find the personal folder to send information to.

I have tried several different types of blank disc but it dosnt seem to recognise any of them.
