My computer was infected with a System Restore malware. I used the real windows system restore to roll back the system to a point before the infection started. It worked, and the computer returned to normal function as far as applications are concerned. However, my documents and pictures disappeared from the hard drive (no thumnails, no filenames).I tried to undo the system restore, but this did not resolve the problem and the virus reappeared, so I rolled it back yet again. I downloaded Glary Utilities and tried the file restorer and thousands of files were found, but none of the files I am looking for appeared.
My family's desktop has reset back to factory settings seemingly by itself. This has happened before but I was able to do a system restore and bring back all the settings, files, and programs. I tried the same thing today but the restore failed (it still failed after I followed its advice to turn the anti-virus off and then run restore) so I've got a large amount of files (pictures, music, documents) missing that I am hoping are still on the hard drive somewhere.
Running Windows 7 with Realtek High Def Audio. Speakers and headphones worked perfectly until recently. Now nothing. I've tried restoring, disconnecting/reconnecting speakers or headphones. Checked to make sure nothing is muted. Software indicates audio is playing, I just can't hear anything. My job requires getting audio so I am desperate. The PC is less than a year old.
i have "Folder Protect" witch i have make a folder and hes files (mass effect 3) undeletable but from nowhere the main exe has vanished(Mass Effect 3BinariesWin32MassEffect3.exe) i don`t think is the game it happen before with a different game
I have been using the snipping tool quite regularly but come to use it tonight and the programme is not in my programme list any more . Also a search can't find the program on my laptop. Any suggestions please to find the programme?
I somehow removed the controls on the Task Manager box. One section opens and the only buttons available are "show processes from all users" and "end process". Luckily, with no "close" button available, I can close it by right clicking on its menu icon and hit "close".
A week ago I had same problem 130 gig of hard drive memory and was vanishing throughout the day.it got down to 15 gig then I dont know what i did but it came back. Now yesterday same problem memory is vanishing and I went from 130 gig to 24 gig.
You may have trouble believing this, but the ENTIRE WINDOWS FOLDER on the hard drive has vanished.I've been using my machine as usual although am having some bad problems, such as not being able to download/install since Windows Installer is also gone. I guess that's part of the Windows.system 32 stuff that disappeared.I have a bad feeling I'll have to reinstall Win 7.How in the world could something like this happen? I have the old Windows folder from XP on the drive but no Win 7. Fortunately, I obssess over backing up and have Carbonite, Acronis True Image, Windows BU and everything on Seagate external drives.
I have had an evil past days all full of computer problems since ISP technician that erase 200 tabs in mozilla with sensitive info to data loss due unintentional power off and unsaved notepads. That by the way trying to avoid again or to reduce the loss for the next time I was installing a screen capture program (a soft tat take a screen-shots in time intervals so i could at least remember what I had open, but when trying some software's I decide to uninstall the av because it was giving me problems I uninstall it and then it ask me for restart I choose not now.
I left the computer for a while and when I came back I found it Off (I imagine the restart message of the antivirus had a countdown otherwise what else could have turned of the computer), and it was not a power interruption, and when I start it again I found a black wallpaper and I decide to go to my picture to select the wallpaper again I found that my pictures has vanished. I am using linux now I want to leave the windows partition alone to see what can I do to get the pictures back, I was looking for a data recovery software like "getdataback" but it doesn't exist for linux.
I set up my folders to share over SMB, but it appears I didn't set up all of them to share with everyone.I'm trying to re share them but I can't seem to get to the same wizard. When i right click on a folder it gives me the option to 'Share With ...' rather than just 'Share ...' If i click 'Share with ...' it takes me into the Folder Properties window and selects the sharing tab. it doesn't bring up the normal windows share wizard. Any ideas how I get back to the normal windows 7 share wizard?
I upgraded my desktop's cpu, motherboard & memory the other day, but didn't do a clean install of Windows 7. It caused me some problems, but I have most of the issues resolved. However, there is one issue I can't resolve & it is regarding my network/internet connection. I have my Billion modem plugged into a D-Link Wireless Router, whihc is then plugged into 1) My desktop (Windows 7); 2) Work Laptop (XP SP3) & 3) Canon network printer. All was working fine before the upgrade. New mobo is an Asus P8P67 LE, with Realtek on board network adaptor. Now, I can't access the internet or the home network through the desktop. The cable is plugged in, but there is no acknowledgement of the PC being connected to anything. The lights around the LAN port on the mobo don't go on when a cable is connected, the light on the router doesn't go on when the cable is connected & Windows 7 says there is no connection.I tried plugging the modem directly into the PC, & the internet connection works, so I know the LAN port is working on the new mobo. I've also tried all combinations of cables & ports between the pc, the laptop & the router

My HP dv6735en with above graphics cards just vanished after upgrading from vista to win 7. In device manager the only listing under graphics is the VGA card (even screen saver shows insufficient graphics error) I tried searching new hardware no luck
My Dell Studio XPS 435MT 920 i7, 6Gb, Vista 64BIT SP2 has motherboard Nvidea High Definition Audio 0-3 (total 4) Channels-Driver 1.3.12.0 in Device Manager and Realtec High Definition Audio x1-Driver 6.0.1.6602. All are indicating Working Properly. But my Vista system sounds and all audio movie/recording playback has suddenly vanished. I've tried to make sure all the software audio systems are not muted or turned off, disabled, all turned to max volume. The stereo/bass sytem works fine on another PC and that other working system also doesn't work on the Dell 435MT. This also happened some time ago and a system restore recovered it but now my restore has not worked (not old enough?). The only recent events are normal updates on system and drivers and a fault with an AcGenral.dll when an exe file is launched. The motherboard seems to work ok as tapping the microphone leads to sound out on the speakers.
I have a problema with windows 7 professional (64 bit, sp1), and offline files.I'm trying the functionality of offline files with a NAS network (WD my book live).Specifically, I do not want to synchronize files with certain extensions (.nef and .cr2). With gpedit.msc in Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Network -> Offline Files, I enabled "exclude files by caching", entering (in the appropriate field), *.nef; *.cr2 But the files with this extension are synchronized anyway.
I have my tower pc on constant all day- to record a streaming IP Camera from my work.Initially, I saved these files into my docutments- which they would save as .avi files, and after every several days I would delete them as they would take up ALOT of space on my pc.My pc is 250GB in size, and usually it would be about 80GB full before I had the IP Camera. Just recently, I noticed all of the IP Camera avi files seemed to have disappeared from my documents if I went directly to the folder... I could still see them in documents when I was choosing a location to save the recordings.Upon right-clicking the avi files in the latter, the files would be of no size and wouldn't play. Now my computer is 210GB full in the matter of a week.
My wife has Windows 7 home premium x64 on her laptop and is using Word 2007. The problem she is having is she will open a word file, change it up, save it, then re-open it later and its the old file not the new one. Where as I can open the edited file on my desktop running the same OS but with Word 2010 and the file that opens for me is the newest version.
My offline files seems to work offline all the time, even when it shows me being online. I sync most of my business files to my laptop for working at home at night. When I edit a file from my Win 7 (pro, 64-bit) laptop, then go to edit it again, I get the version I had changed, but no one else does. This is causing huge difficulty, because my employees will start working in a sales forecast spreadsheet after I reconnect to the network and supposedly sync, but they don't get the latest version. Even doing a manual sync seems to make no difference.
I have a system with 32gb DDR3-2400, a 256GB SSD and a couple of spinners. I have set up 4gb of the RAM to be used as another RAMdisk using the softperfect software. This problem has been going on for some time, but has been more of a problem since I started using the RAMdisk. Not because the RAMdisk itself isn't working well, because the stuff that is stored there keeps getting reset.I have pretty much identified that when updates are installed through windows update (either from Microsoft update or from my WSUS server), the following are reset to defaults
1. Pagefile is automatically managed and stored on the C: drive and is set to 32gb
2. The TEMP and TMP environment variables are reset to the C:users default location
3. The temporary Internet Files location is reset to the default C:users... location
There may be others that I have not discovered.I have manually set my swap file to 1024/2048 on the D: drive (a spinner), on the belief that it should rarely if ever be needed with a system equipped with 32GB of RAM. I'm certainly not inclined to waste 32GB of space on my SSD for an unused object.I have placed the TMP/TEMP files, cookies and Temporary Internet files on the RAMdisk to squeeze a little extra performance out of the system. (Yes, I know, I'm not really getting much benefit).Photoshop and a few other programs also use the RAMdisk as a scratch disk, and were the main reason I set it up in the first place. This is becoming a real pain when it gets reset as I have to manually change everything again. Anyone know a way to make windows leave settings at what I set them, instead of having it continually reset the values to what it wants? I'd prefer to have it my way. I know there will be proponents of "leave things as windows wants it".
I didn't used to have this problem before. For some unknown reason, all my video files have a separate PNG file next to it with a picture of the thumbnail. I don't remember changing any viewing options that may have triggered this.
My file and storage system is set up like this: C: Drive - 120 GB SSD This is my Win 7 64-Bit Ultimate Boot drive. It has my most important Microsoft programs on it. Out of the 111GB available, I've used 42GB, leaving me 69GB free space. I want to keep this area open.
My next drive is a 1TB WD Caviar Black segmented into 3 partitions.
E: Drive = Program FIles This has the majority and rest of my programs. It also includes USERs Files. I've use 96GB out of 150GB. Out of that 96GB, 64GB are in USERS files.
F: Drive = Data Files. This stores all of my data except for media. I've used 91GB out of 350. I want to leave this be.
G:| Drive = Medsia FIles This stores all Media = Vids, Music, Graphics, Pictures. I've used 80 GB out of 500GB
I also have a 64GB ~ 55GB actual storage SSD drive that is partitioned but has no data on it or assigned drive letter.
Here is what I want to accomplish. i want to move my actual Program FIles to the 64GB SSD, assign it a drive letter, and keep the USERS files where they now reside on the F: dirve
My main concern is that in moving all these files around and splitting the USERS files from the Program Files that I'll mees up my Registry. Will someone please suggest some links I might read that will best help me acheive these moves.
I'm running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit and having the same problem. You can easily resolve the "Hidden File" problem by right clicking on the file, select Properties, and remove the check box next to "Hidden". If you tagged all the photos in a folder, simply select all (ctrl-A) and do the same. It solved the hidden file problem for me without having to show all hidden files. The problem I'm running into that I can't fix is that even after doing this, Carbonite now recognizes these files as system files and refuses to back them up. Even if you try to manually force Carbonite to back them up, it immediately unselects the check box. Hopefully somebody knows of a solution. It's weird, because I was tagging photos just a few weeks ago, and didn't have any problems at all. I don't know if there was an update at some point that screwed this all up.
how to activate the previews of several files like *.rtf, *.pdf and OpenOffice files (and *.doc, *.xls,...)?On my Windows 7 64bits only the previews of images or movies work..how to do it for icons, for visualisation it's working (except for OOo files)?
I would like to remove the 30 or so files that are now showing on my desktop since selecting to "Show Hidden files"They are all old excel and word documents but not sure if removing them would cause an issue What are they/how are they created?I'm on Windows 7 Home Premium x64 and Office 2007
I tried doing this. Example, game files/data from my XPdocs on C: to my Windows 7 docs on D: couldnt do it, just gave me a chime, no dialogue box or anything. Also tried to move a file from my desktop to either mydocs or to program files folder, same thing. After that, even took ownership of all affected folders/files, ones being moved and destination folder. Still the same.
Question: is there some type of security setting i am missing? anyone else test this? I have moved files to mydocs before, and now i cant move anything to there, has me confused now. Nothing special about a file or folder i am trying to move, permissions ect.
Tried both cut and paste, and copy, same problem either way. No protected files/folders involved
When I create Excel douments using Excel 2003 on my Windows 7 system it saves them as 'OOBE.' documents. If I try to open them from 'My Computer' it says it cannot open them (the Open With option does not suggest Excel). However if I open Excel first then go File Open, then document is fine. When attaching these files to emails they don't look like Excel files then either.
