Enable Desktop Auto-arrange Via Registry Or GrpPol?
Jul 29, 2010
After imaging many, many Win 7 systems, we discovered that the Desktop | View | "Auto Arrange" option and "Align to grid" option were off. We want them on (because the computers are in public spaces). Is there a set of registry settings or group policy settings that we can use to turn those options on?I have found that a registry setting([HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsShellBags1Desktop] "FFlags"=dword:00200220 ) is related to those options, but just changing that key (to "FFlags"=dword:00200225 ) does not do anything. Refreshing the RegEdit screen just changes the value back to its previous value.
About a month and a half ago, I noticed all my desktop icons were on the left side of the screen in alphabetical order. Turning Auto-arrange off or on does nothing. As soon as I refresh or restart my PC, the icons revert back to the auro-arrange display. We have four user on my PC and oddly enough only my account (which is the admin - not sure if that matters) has the problem. I've read a number of old posts (1-2 years old) that discuss accessing the registry.
I am using Word and I want to be able to arrange the folders and documents I have in a folder however I want them, instead of them being arranged by themselves.
Enable or Disable, either or and one can figure the other, but Enable or Disable Drag and Drop of Files/Folders in EXPLORER via the Registry. This is NOT about the desktop, NOT the Internet, Not the StartMenu. That should surely narrow it down i hope
I have a similar post but not for WIndows Xp but not Windows 7 and while I am told its similar for XP/7 I have not found the case..... Vista I am told is slightly different yet. But, I am looking for registry edit/tweak under a similar key such as in the HKCU or HKLM as listed (should be close):
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorer HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerAdvanc ed
Whether I was off on the timing/correation I have tried the following Keys/Subkey names: EnableDragDrop, DisableDragDrop, DragDrop, DragAndDrop....... noe of these seem to have an effect.
I toyed with these but were not any of the issue (or before): HKCUSOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionInternet Settingsones...
In "My Pictures" (only), the "New Folder" option on top is gone and no matter how much I try to arrange the pictures to view my "Subfolders" instead of viewing the pictures arranged by "Day" I can't.I just want that "New folder" option up again, and to view all the subfolders (Arranged by: Folder) I made instead having it "Arranged by: Day". I can still change the "Arranged by: ___" to any of these --->Month, Day, rating, tag.And yes, I've tried changing the "Arranged by: ___" to "Folders" but nothing shows up, except the 4 options I just listed
I've recently started having an issue whereby my desktop icons (and by extension the icons in the start bar) keep refreshing. It's not a constant thing - usually several minutes pass between refreshes - and I'm not entirely sure what's triggering it or why it keeps on happening, still less how to go about fixing it. A scheduled system scan for viruses last night came up negative, so did a quick scan I ran this evening. On the advice of a user in another thread about the same issue, I've also downloaded Malwarebytes and ran a full scan using that.
I am trying to find the registry key that will change the desktop icon size to small.
This is mainly for new users, or for the default user. I have workstations that have several people sharing them and need this for everyone.
I have looked in these locations: HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsShellBags1DesktopIconSize And HKey_CURRENT_USERControl PanelDesktopWindowMetricsShell Icon Size I played with both these settings for myself, and the desktop icons do not change. If I reboot, the first key value goes back to 32, and the second key stays at 96. But my icons never change in size. I am looking for any way to do this in the registry. I could try copying the ntuser.dat but fear I will still have issues with paths, and other defaults that will cause the same problem I had originally.
Aero Peek or Desktop Preview is a new feature in Windows 7 which lets you preview the desktop, making the the windows on top transparent. This tutorial will show you how to enable the Aero Peek or Desktop Preview.
I have been worried sick that someone hacked my computer, till someone said that home group icons can be automatically created. The problem i am having is that when i login my computer, there is a home group icon created on my desktop. I go in its options and leave home group, when i restart my computer its there again. My home have no other computers and its gets created on desktop even when my internet is off
I have problems (hardware/software)when starting my laptop (Presario F700) AND after getting to my desktop. When I start my computer, there are three things that can happen:1) It will stay at the "Compaq" screen for a while (like three long minutes) then go to my desktop.2) It will go passed the "Compaq" screen and stay at a black screen with a blinking dash (again for about three minutes) then go to my desktop.3) Or it will go passed the "Compaq" screen, stay at the black screen with blinking dash but then it will eventually say "The Operating System was not found"This is the least of my worries though, when I get to my desktop, after about three minutes, it will automatically restart.I am able to stay on safe mode without it restarting.Another problem I am having is when I try to open a program like Notepad or Command prompt (and probably more) I get this message: "The item '***' that this shortcut refers to has been changed or moved, so this shortcut will no longer work properly"
I have a Razor mouse ( the Lachesis) which has the ability to store profiles -of polling rates and DPI- and switch these profiles as it sees the desired program. I use two profiles. One is for the "Steam.exe" for my on-line gaming. When I launch Steam, the mouse sees the exe, and switches to this max polling/DPI profile. The other profile is the "Normal" profile which is set at a much slower, less twitchy speed. On XP, I was able to find the Windows "Explorer.exe" in CWindowsSystem32. I set this as my switching exe.and it caused the mouse to switch to the "Normal" profile when it saw the desktop. I can't find the "Explorer.exe" in System32 in Windows 7. Is there no such thing in Windows 7 (Enterprise) or is there another exe. I can use for the same purpose of switching, on seeing the desktop?
I've unistalled Amd Driver from Device Manager, Unistalled Catalyst software and ran Driver Sweeper. There is only 3 registeries that the Driver Sweeper CAN'T delete and these are under SYSTEM folder. I've tried to change user privilegies but this far I've not succeeded.
While windows was uploading some updates yesterday, I cleaned my registry using Iolo's system mechanic tool and that's where the problems started. (I already read and understood your message: don't use those tools and stay out of your registry. A lesson I learned too late, unfortunately.)My computer rebooted and after a couple of minutes I noticed the message: " failure configuring windows features reverting changes ". I managed to bypass this loop by running in safe mode and recover my computer to a restore point in the past. This only worked partially: I get windows to run in normal mode but I get this message: "system failed while restoring the registry from the restore point. Restore point damaged or was deleted during restore". So it didn't restore but I can get into my windows now.So I don't get the 'reverting change loop' anymore, so I can access my computer but what's the mess? Well my computer is slow as hell.Like mentioned above, I already looked around on this forum and wrote down what I already tried. [code] My computer is terrible slow because of a registry defrag/optimization of a registry tool (in combination with windows update) --> I need to find a way to get back my old registry files but system recovery ain't working.
This is weird... When I arrange a folder by name that is located in My Documents, all the files disappear and refresh doesnt bring them back! I can reproduce it consistently using blank text documents. If I copy that folder and paste it somewhere outside my documents, I can see the contents again. My Documents are mapped to a separate data partition, but Im not sure if that is the problem because if I copy the folder that just got messed up and put it somewhere else on the data partition, the files become visible again.Lastly, why does the menu "arrange by" only appear when Im inside My Documents folder?Ok, Im starting to answer my own question here, but I just noticed that this only occurs when I access My Documents through the libraries link. If I access it through my personal folder link on the start menu, everything is visible again, and the "arrange by" menu isnt visible
With previous versions of Windows, I was able to arrange file in a folder by type of file, by date file was created, etc. I can't figure out how to do this in Win 7.
I have two toolbars in IE 9 that are both very short. I would like to merge them on the same line. I used to be able to do this by clickin on the handle on the left end, then move it when a 4 point arrow showed up, which it is now NOT showing up.
is there a way to arrange my boot menu w/o me having to unplug drivers manually? It is set up to where my back-up 1 tb is the primary boot device, my dvd wr is secondary and my hdd is the 3rd device, so when I start my pc I have to load boot menu and manually select my hdd every time.
I have 10 pdfs open and I want them in a certain order on my taskbar. Vista had programs like taskix or taskbar shuffle but they dont seem to work for windows 7.
All I'm trying to do is arrange my photos in folders according to subject. It will not allow me to drag and drop from one picture folder to another. I tried following the directions and adding the same tag to all the pics I want in the same folder but that isn't working. This system will not let me do anything to arrange my photos the way I want?
How can I arrange jpgs within a folder without renaming them FIRST? XP allowed drag and drop to allow MY OWN organization. Windows 7 seems to have replaced that with only auto-arrange options. Am I missing something or is there still some way to organize a slideshow or content-based order?
I have a colleague who is having problems with documents being saved in 'My Documents' but which are then not visible. After consulting our external IT company, we were told it because the 'Arrange By' option in My Documents was set to 'Name' and it should be set to 'Folder'.
My colleague changed this and it solved the problem. However, every day it reverts to the default arrange by 'name' setting, and she has to manually change it to 'folder'.
How do I change the settings so that it arranges by 'folder' by default?
I bought a Asus U36J laptop back in April of last year and ever since then I have been beating around an issue that I dont seem to be able to resolve one way or the other. When ever the laptop is on battery and in battery saving mode it has my taskbar on autohide. If I turn that off, then it stays off right until it is put back into battery saving mode at which point it is "magically" ticked on again.
Is there no way to simply disable that feature, as its annoying me greatly. I know its tied into the battery saving desktop, and I want to keep the battery saving desktop but want a full taskbar all the time. I found a supposed fix to make that happen, and while it actually makes the taskbar appear all the time, it still is a bad hack as any windows I have open wont "attach" to the taskbar but attaches to the buttom of the screen.
So for the love of god is there no sane way for me to keep the battery saving desktop but get rid of the autohiding taskbar. Otherwise I know Asus most likely wont be my laptop of choice next time aroumd.
When I open my library and look at my video files (arranged based on "date modified"), the files that are older than one week are alphabetically listed under "Earlier this week," "Earlier this month" and "Earlier this year." In contrast, when i copy those same files on a memory card (SDHC), they're arranged in true chronological order. I would like the library to show true chronological order (ie not separated by this week, this month, etc), so I could more easily determine which files have been copied over to the media card. How do I do that?
Some files in my external drive has a lock symbol near them, some don't. Why is this happening?
I am using Microsoft Sync and recently I had to use "Run as Administrator" for it because some files were "access denied". (I am using the drive in different operating systems in different partitions).
Should I run Sync in administrator mode, or regular? How should I arrange the security for the drive? Should I add users or everyone? (now it is creator owner, system, administrators and me -I am administrator and only user-).
I got confused because before I didn't need to use the administrator mode for syncing and I don't want it to cause problems when syncing, not to miss any files.
(When I try to give myself -username-pc/username- full control, after that it still returns to not full control, no permissions for the drive are inherited )
