Jul 12, 2012I upgraded my computer from Vista to Windows 7 (tech do it at Best Buy). Didn't have problems until a round mid June. Uninstalled some programs, did scans with Malwarebyts (found a bunch of malicious software), cleaned with ccleaner. Cleaned c drive. Scanned for viruses with micorsoft security essentials (nothing found). When I try to install my new webcam computer shows blue screen with ... windows has shut down to avoid damage and today I it was doing scan for viruses and froze again. Sometimes computer shuts down while simply clicking on a link in a website. A few weeks ago I used ccleaner to clearn up the registry and I fear something may have happened then as I've recently read that one should not mess with the registry. There are some other things I've tried but can't recall at the moment.

Feb 2, 2013My SSD with Windows 7 is O.K. - I can restore backup images.My Primary SamSung HDD is O.K. - I can restore backup images.My Secondary WDC HDD is what held my images and they vanished.Fortunately I have duplicates of most on an external HDD.I am currently scanning and attempting to recover from the Secondary HDD the few images that were not backed up.My WDC HDD was GPT which I have read is safer than MBR - but that did not work out well for me.I am thinking of cleaning it and using it as MBR,especially as Lost Partition Recovery is so much faster and easier on MBR than on GPT disks.If I use Windows Disk Management to make the WDC Disk "Offline" would that protect from a Linux glitch,or is it only Windows applications and tools that take any notice of Offline/Online settings ?Would the WDC be better protected if I refrain from allocating drive letters to the partitions on the WDC,and only access via the alternative Disk Management option "Mount in the following empty NTFS folder" ?
Windows always Recognises first the WDC HDC as Disc 0
and then the Samsung HDD as Disk 1
and finally the OCZ SSD as Disk 2 (even though it is connected to SATA port 0)
My Secondary WDC HDD was GPT with several partitions.I booted into a Linux Boot Flash Drive that I had slightly tweaked,and Linux aborted on start-up and the system restarted so I allowed a normal Windows 7 start-up.Windows Recognised the WDC HDD as Disk 0 BUT for some reason the GPT style Disc ID was a much shorter MBR style Disc ID.As usual the Samsung HDD was Disc 1, BUT IT WAS OFFLINE due to a Disk Signature Conflict.By Launching Macrium Reflect I saw that the WDC HDD was using the same 8 digit signature as the Samsung HDD.Windows Disk Management shows this WDC HDD as NOW being an MBR DISK with

Sep 19, 2011After becoming unable to download identified updates in Windows Update, and also being unable to search for new updates, I did a detailed scan with Microsoft Security Essentials which identified and removed some malware (Exploit:Java/CVE-2010-0840.IZ).
Since Windows Update still wouldn't work I restored my settings from last Friday with no improvement. Using Fix problems with Windows Update gets stuck on Fixing problem.
I then tried to do a reinstall as an update, but the installer was unable to find any updates (or rather it was forever* trying to locate any).
On a tip from a friend I looked in the hosts file but it was unaltered. *Forever is a relative term but in this case it's 90+ minutes.

Jul 15, 2010Today some maintenance personnel were working on my bathroom in my apartment. I stepped out to take care of some errands while they worked. I put my computer into sleep mode (NOT hibernation - Actually sleep mode). When I got home, I realized that all of the clocks were flashing "12:00" and my computer was powered off.When I talked to the maintenance crew, they said that they had encountered a problem in the bathroom and caused a short. This, in turn, tripped the breaker that my computer room was on, which they then reset. This means that my computer, at minimum, experienced a hard power loss while running. It may or may not have experienced a surge (!), though it is on a surge protector. And the surge protector did not have its safety lights lit to indicate a surge.
Unfortunately, since using the computer I'm noticing a lot of oddities. I played some TF2 to unwind, and for the first time ever it crashed. My Video Card got stuck in "uplocked/3D" mode. Web browsing was slower than I'm used to, and overall it seemed like the computer picked up a lot of 'chugging' where it hadn't before.Is there some method to diagnose the general health and well being of my computer in windows? Are there tools beyond CHKDSK that I can run to locate problems that may have occurred as a result of a power surge? I'm concerned that the power loss damaged my components significantly, and I'm not sure how to diagnose the problem or determine if it's all in my head.

My tv just flashes a few times, and I can see that fish a couple of times, but then it just goes to like no signal. If I use default drivers which are installed on windows install, then it works fine, but then I dont have NVIDIA control panel and some other features.

Sfc Scan Now Cannot Fix?
Jan 8, 2012My laptop is in a homegroup with my desktop to do printer sharing and also remote desktop. Not sure when it started but both systems are booting very slow. So I ran the sfc /scannow. The CBS.log shows the errors that couldn't be fixed. Is there anyone that can help me fix the errors?Because I did an anytime upgrade doing a clean install is going to be a real pain and I am hoping with the log that I can attempt a fix rather than doing a clean install or system repair which both will require hours of doing. Seems if I understand the log that one problem is a printer issue, maybe?I don't want to post the log here and am not sure which forum I should seek help on.Both my systems are running Win 7 64 bit, Norton IS 2012, Malwarebytes, and I use CCleaner on a regular bases. Feb 4, 2011dual booting windows 7 home premium x64 with linux fedora 14 on dual independantly dedicated drives. i am a college student with moderate computer (windows) knowledge but am doing software development and would like to play around with some linux for a class. i have no prior experience with linux and have minimal knowledge of operation. i am currently running windows 7 and would like to keep it as my primary os. i do not wish to share media files across drives or os's, windows does that just fine as is and i dont want to get into a third drive. my current drive is a 1tb wd black caviar hdd. it is also currently 2/3rds full and the desktop is about 6 months old so i would rather not partition the drive for a dual boot. i would think that there are some other advantages for the os's operating independantly off their own drives other than if one hdd dies i should still have the other with its os still ok. i have read some topics about RAID configs with dual boot setups with dual drives like this but am not very familiar with RAID. is there a RAID config that would be beneficial in this situation? i currently do not have a RAID card. my tower internals are not very accessible and i dont like the idea of disconnecting drives depending on which os i want to operate.

On the new computer with Windows 7, the generic HP PSC 1200 driver that is part of Windows 7 will not scan to pdf. It does the bmp, jpg, tiff, and png. And not multi page. Any way to get back the pdf capability without having to buy acrobat? I legally had the ability before the "upgrade".

Nov 12, 2009As currently configured, XP is on drive C:, Win 7 was added to drive E:, and the system is currently run as a dual boot. Attempting to boot without the XP drive present will yield a "NTLDR is missing" error very early in the boot process.
I have already tried the following:
(1) I moved the hidden Windows Boot Manager files (bootmgr as well as the associated Boot folder) from the XP drive root to the Win 7 drive root.
(2) After physically removing the XP drive, I rebooted to the Win 7 installation DVD, and used the "Repair Your Computer" option to pull up the "Recovery Tools". Then, using the command prompt utility, ...
(3) I attempted to write a new boot sector to the Windows 7 disk using the command: Bootrec /fixboot, - that yields an error though. The Bootrec /fixmbr claimed success, but ultimately did not make Win 7 drive bootable.
I had to reconnect drive C: just to boot into Win 7 again to write this. I do have files backed up, but to format and reinstall files would take many hours beyond just the time to transfer 400 GB of data, since I have dozens of purchased applications that need to be freshly reinstalled and validated as well. Basically I want my E: drive now to be my boot drive while the C: drive is reformatted and used for general storage.
Any idea how to make my Win 7 drive bootable? Do I need a partition program that is more adept at creating a viable boot sector, or is that even the problem?
Why Won't Windows Update Scan
Apr 28, 2012I just got my laptop from service. It is a Sony Vaio They supposedly restored my computer to factory setting but I can't update my computer.
The bar to the left is red and i see a red shield with a white x and it says most recent checks for updates: never
updates were installed: never i go to installed programs and nothing has been installed since early 2010.
It's like whenever i try to click check for updates button it's like something is blocking it from connecting and scanning is the best way I can explain it. I desperately need help to update all my software and security patches etc
