Crash Followed By "Honking" Noise?
Feb 28, 2012
I've tried to find the solution myself, but it seems like no one has the same problem I have. Before I get started, I'll post my computer build in case that info is needed:
Phenom II X4 980 Black Edition
G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600
AM3 AMD 870
EVGA SuperClocked 012-P3-1572-AR GeForce GTX 570
Crucial M4 CT128M4SSD2 2.5" 128GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive
CORSAIR Professional Series HX750 (CMPSU-750HX) 750W 80 PLUS SILVER
Scenario:This first happened when I started playing Lineage II about a month ago. At that time, my GPU was a Radeon HD 6870. I had all the max settings on and I'd run the game just fine.. for a about an hour. After that, the screen's graphics would become "distorted" and freeze at the same time. Then, moments later, Windows would tell me that the game crashed. I'd close out the screen and then seconds later, a "honking" type noise emits from my speakers. I would try to run something else, but the graphics on the desktop would become distorted as well as I explored Windows. My temporary solution? I restarted my computer. Problem fixed... temporarily.
This problem persisted with Rift as well. I'd play for about an hour and then the screen's graphics would go haywire and freeze, followed by a crash screen and then that honking noise from my speakers would come out. The honking noise would be consecutive skips rather than one long noise ("honks" that would last for a few seconds, quiets itself down, and repeats). To give an idea as to what the noise sounded like, imagine an old car with a really whimpy honking noise that is sorta high pitched.
-Civilization V
-Lineage II
-Wurm Online (this game + multi-tasking on the web)
-Neverwinter Nights 2
NOTE: The only game I don't happen to have a problem with (and consumes the most power out of my system) was Final Fantasy XIV.
1.) Updated all my drivers (graphics card, speakers, SSD, etc.)
2.) Ran a memory test to see if my memory was faulty (it wasn't)
3.) Returned everything back to factory settings, BIOS-wise (I OC'd a few times via TurboV EVO program that came with the mobo, but I returned all the settings back to the stock levels)
4.) Updated DirectX 11 as much as I could
5.) Ran dxdiag, only to find out there were no problems
6.) Ran Heaven Benchmarks to see if my GPU was at fault (33.6 avg FPS on max everything btw )
7.) The computer had a fresh install on the SSD, so all the drivers and such were installed on there
I can't think of anything else, but I tried a lot of things to figure out what my problem was; however, I realized that there was a place that I didn't pay attention to: Event Viewer. This is why I wrote my message on this particular forum. I figured that this was a software issue that needs to be resolved, but this is all just me guessing. Everytime I had the crashing and noise issues from running games, I would look on the Event Viewer afterwards to see if the problem was logged. This issue in particular always pops up after I restart the computer as a result of my computer crashing: (this occurred recently when I had Wurm Online with Hulu opened at the same time)
Faulting application name: iexplore.exe, version: 9.0.8112.16421, time stamp: 0x4d76255d
Faulting module name: Flash11f.ocx, version: 11.1.102.62, time stamp: 0x4f39bda1
Exception code: 0xc000041d
Fault offset: 0x000a23d5
[code]....
All of these reports have a "Error" as their level, "Application Error" as their source, "1000" as their Event ID, and "(100)" as their Task Category.

I have been dealing with this problem for a long time but something gotta happen. The random restart happen well randomly during idle, game play, surfing the web or anything that has to do with the computer. One minute I'm enjoying myself and the next I see the Dell logo. No BSOD just loads back to desktop. I have searched the forums and have nothing out there that gives ME and idea of what's going on. I have formatted and reinstalled the OS and it still happens. It happened before and After I upgraded my PSU and Graphics card. It's happens multiple times a day. Now my second issue. I have I play AION and during game play I hear a LOAD crackle through my speakers and I'll hear it for a range of 2 sec to 10 sec and then the system restarts. No BSOD on report. This also happened before and after new PSU and graphics card and before and after format reinstall. I've updated my graphics card sound card, Bios, chipset, everything I can find a driver for I've installed it. I cant find any resolution. I doubt this forum will have an answer for this problem but while I'm listing my problems I'll add this one. During gameplay of AION I will get a message that AION game client OTCbuildclient32_wogg(30) has stopped working. I have also gotten a couple alerts from Norton that that same process is using a lot of memory.

I read through a few threads with similar topics but the issues were either not quite the same and/or resolved comparatively easily. I am trying to repair a 1.5 year-old HP Pavilion running Windows 7 Home Premium 64. This machine is used as the main office computer in a small doctor's office. In spite of my warnings, anti-virus software was not installed until it was too lateThere was a major issue about seven months ago that required another company to repairThe problem is explorer.exe will not run. Double-clicking a shortcut on the desktop, clicking the text name of a program from the Start menu, and even in the cmd results in the same response, a dialog box pops up stating windows explorer has stopped working.
windows is checking for a solution to the problem. followed by another box stating windows explorer is restarting. But the requested application never starts. I have run the Ultimate Boot CD 4 Win, replaced the hard drive and cloned all data, run numerous registry scans, malware scans and antivirus scans. Initially removing over 1500 virus/malware hits and over 1400 registry errors. But the main problem persists, explorer.exe won't open programs.

Normally both of my HDDs (750 segate, 250 segate) never make any noticeable noise above the sound of my fans. A few days ago one of them (haven't narrowed it down to which one) make a loud beep sound and then revs itself up really fast. They both seem to be working fine, but they have never really made any noises until now and I'm worried about the health of the drive. It's one of my storage drives.

My computer has started to make a bit of noise...it sounds like a faint hum, or constant drone, kind of like a fan noise. I checked the intake, exhaust and cpu fans by stopping them spinning and the noise is still there. It sounds like its coming from my PSU. Does that mean its on its way out? I have a Hiper 530watt PSU which I have had for about 4-5 years now.

I as far as I can remember have never had this loud noose before, but lately for a month or so? Ish? I've been having a series of loud noises from my pc, so loud that I can hear it even when playing BF3 with a headset! And so violent at times I can feel the keyboard vibrating lightly, and if I touch the PC it is vibrating decently softly.I may be wrong but it seems it started after BF3, and thought it might be the fan or my PC really struggling with the game, but it does it even when I'm not playing. It's sometimes just a softer sound, then will accelerate to a "burr, burr, burr" then go full auto into "brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr" occasionally very loud. So here's the REALLY scary part: while playing Skyrim a very weird thing happened: it stopped. The sound of the game looped into a "drrrrrrrrrr" and I had to hold down the off button. Nothing else did anything. I rebooted and tested it again...sure enough: 30 seconds in I had to do the same thing. I gave it one last chance and decided I would try to discern if it did anything else notable, but the third time it was fine. I left the game open a while to see if it'd do it again, but it didn't.So I'm scared. WTH is wrong with my PC? BTW it is kinda low on disc space...if that matters. Also the disc options are gone when I click on documents under the c drive and stuff...then again I had installed virtual drives..

My computer monitor, HP LP3065c it's 30", makes a very very faint noise when it comes on. Is this normal? If not what can be done? I've had it since it was first released on the market several years ago and I'm wondering if it may be getting tired.

i just began to hear a fan noise about 3 days ago on my hewlett packard dv7-1444us laptop. i am pretty sure it is the fan as i know how the fan sounds and it is not sounding like it used too (instead of the hard drive). it's making a constant whining noise now most of the time. once an awhile it takes a little while to start making the whining noise. i downloaded the hw monitor program and it has these stats:
value min max
compal 30fc tz01 58c (134f) 56c (132f) 63c (145f)
(not sure what compal means)
amd turion x2 rm-75 core #0 58c (136f) 58c (136f) 70c (157f)
core #1 58c (136f) 58c (136f) 70c (157f)
[code]....
tried turning off the fan in the bios but no luck as it still kicks in. was trying to turn it off to make sure it was the fan by the noise going away.downloaded speed fan and don't see any fan readings at all or i don't know how to use the program downloaded the service manual from hp, and of course the fan is the very last thing to get too after taking the entire laptop apart! also found a video on Internet of a different model but almost exactly like mine being taking apart! looks scary and exciting at the same time. why did they put the fan in such a hard to get to place? hard drive is right there after taking out about 6 screws as i did just to take a look!any diagnostics program i can run to make sure it is the fan?can i continue to use the machine. the noise is driving me bonkers, wish i could turn it off and maybe get one of those laptop portable fan things.

my pc developed this problem where there was a ticking noise from inside the system, followed by the whole system freezing. initially the system froze momentarily, but later onwards it became more and more permanent. we took it to the repairman and he fixed it, saying that there was a "corrupt file" in the system. no such problems emerged after that.two weeks later i heard a faint ticking noise, but the freeze was permanent, and it came while i was watching a Internet video. after the freeze ended, a notification came up from chrome saying that shockwave had become unresponsive. i didn't take that much notice of it then..then around a week later, the same old problem came up, and this time, it became permanent as well. the repairman is puzzled and refutes my idea that it's because the hdd is going for a six. he still thinks that the old corrupt file problem is to blame.can anyone enlighten me how this ticking-noise-followed-by-progressively-permanent-freeze-up problem can be explained. is there more than one reason? is there any reason other than the corrupt file and hdd break-up?

I got a new pair of headphones today and after awhile I noticed a quiet buzzing noise when I move my mouse around or type on the keyboard, soon I heard the noise without any user input until I restarted my PC then it was just buzzing when using my mouse and keyboard.I tested several headphones and heard no noise however these new ones are better than my old ones, I've also tested them on my brother's PC and heard no buzzing.I'm using my onboard VIA HD Audio driver(up to date). I still hear the noise even if I disable all audio devices.Motherboard is a Gigabyte M4A785TD-V EVO.

Mobo: Gigabyte M4A785TD-V EVO

Just the other day I noticed when I was watching a movie on my computer with my headphones on then muted the sound I heard heavy static. I also have a Logitech mic that I just bought recently and when I played back my voice via from Audacity, all I heard was constant static noise. Are my speakers going out? Or do I need to update my sound card/driver? If so, what kind for a Windows 7 64 bit would I need to download?

I'm getting a very irritating high pitch, low volume, buzzing noise when my speakers volume is at max, even if my system volume is 0. The only way to get rid of this is to of course, lower my speaker volume, but the buzzing is still there just quieter.

Recently I've bought the Roccat Kave gaming headset and to enjoy it ( i would not say to the fullest but at least the bass ) I bought along a Creative SB X-fi Titanium PCI-e sound card. It was all fine untill a couple days ago, where I started to feel distortion and crackling sounds when listening to anything on the computer. It is not from the headset because it works just fine when connected to the audio tray on the motherboard

I have an issue with my computer that is extremely annoying since it repeats over and over again. The issue is that a sound similar, if not identical to the "Page Loaded" sound from Internet Explorer. I haven't used Internet Explorer in two years, instead I use Firefox 3.16.16. This noise is not only annoying but scares me that a virus or trojan is running in the background using Internet Explorer to download more viruses (Which is the reason why I switched to Firefox in the first place.) The sound is so annoying that I literally have to mute my headphones and speakers to prevent that noise from playing. The sound plays even when Firefox isn't running and even plays when I'm playing some video games. I've had this problem before (With what might be my other computer, but it could very well be this one)[CODE]

. I have 2 of them, one is a Western Digital Caviar Blue, about 2 years old I think. The second is a Western Digital as well, but I'm unsure of the type and age, it's a 150GB drive. One of these drives are making an odd noise, I suspect it's the main drive, the 500GB Caviar Blue. Reason being is because after starting up my system and selecting either Windows 7 or Windows XP it does a Disk Check before going to the Welcome screen, it does not do the Disk Check every time, but it happens quite often. Disk Check of course displays no issues upon completing. The thing I notice that happens, but not very often, it's about a 1 second kind of low screech noise coming from my computer tower. It is making me worried of my computer health and how much longer is might live.

I recently bought an Acer Aspire 7738G laptop with Windows 7. After a day or two the speakers (in fact i think it was the internal subwoofer) started to make a loud grinding noise which was intermittant but which became increasingly prevalent. It seemed sometimes to be brought on by my going online or somethin like that whilst music was playing, but sometimes started on it's own. Thinking it was a hardware problem I changed my laptop for exactly the same model. Unfortunately however after a few days exactly the same thing has started to happen.
I don't think I am the only one to have had this problem (see link below) and I wonder if it's aproblem with Windows 7 and Acer internal subwoofers. I am not a techy and all I can think to do is to take this laptop back and get a non Acer one. I'd rather not go through all that again (transferring itunes alone is a pain let alone getting the computer to perform in the shop).
Please let me know therefore if there is a simple fix to save me the trouble.

I have just installed a new PC, which has Realtek HD Audio on board. The problem I encounter, is that when using the Realtek HD Audio Driver, I get a "blip" sound before and after each sound, almost as if the speaker port is being enabled and disabled.I should point out, that I still get this blip through my front speakers, even when sound is coming out of rear speakers only (such as when performing a windows sound test).I should also point out, that when using the Windows 7 sound drivers, I do not have this problem - all is fine! Except for the big fact, that my rear speakers are not enabled as Windows 7 drivers insist on driving them all through the same jack port, which is why I need to run the Realtek HD Audio Manager & Driver.
PC is installed with Windows 7 Ultimate
Realtek Audio Driver Version: 6.0.1.5898
Direct X Version: 11.0
Audio Codec: ALC662
Speaker Setup: Quadrophonic
