Whenever I click on folders that contain mkv/h264 files, explorer crashes. But if I view the folders through the open feature of say notepad, then I can click and delete the folders no problem.
View 9 RepliesI recently opened up an external hard drive of mine and attempted to open a specific file that contains video files. I don't know what type of files are contained within this folder, I just know that they are videos of some sort. My issue here is that when I click on the folder windows explorer will immediately freeze and upon clicking anywhere within the window or any other windows explorer window I receive the windows explorer is unresponsive with the usual restart, close and wait options. I have disabled thumbnails and there are no DivX related files on my computer and none found with shellexviewer. Although selecting it causes crashes, through my antivirus I am able to locate the folder and scan it though I can not open it.

Whenever I try to open a folder by simply double-clicking, it brings up an error message stating that I do not have a program assigned to perform the requested action. I checked my defaults and windows search is assigned to handle folder browsing. The only way into the folders is to right-click and hit Open, but along with that, cmd (in bold) is the first option in the right-click menu. If I click it, it says the same thing as trying to double-click.

windows is checking for a solution to the problem. followed by another box stating windows explorer is restarting. But the requested application never starts. I have run the Ultimate Boot CD 4 Win, replaced the hard drive and cloned all data, run numerous registry scans, malware scans and antivirus scans. Initially removing over 1500 virus/malware hits and over 1400 registry errors. But the main problem persists, explorer.exe won't open programs.
Randomly around 9pm or 10pm at night I would hear a series of clicking into folders sound, you know that sound windows makes when you open a folder? It's that sound.Nothing is moving on my computer. I just hear that folder opening sound sometimes.It's not just 1 click. On that PC is basically everything. music, pics, videos etc. It is the primary computer but I also have a laptop and a tablet that access that data too. I need/want full access to everything on the office-PC read/write. no problem easily done and I have had no issues currently until today. (64 bit win 7 system)
My daughter saved up and purchased a netbook [Morgan-Netbook] (OS:win 7 starter). I got her on the network and when connected it asked about homegroup so I said yes and now I see her and she sees me. BUT she has full read/write access to everything on the PC. I can access everything I would expect via the homegroup but then under the "network" icon I can see all my shared folders and she has way more access.
I would like her to have read access to pics, videos and specific folders but not necessarily everything else. I have tried adding her as a user in the sharing permissions but my Office PC only wants to see Location as "office-PC" so I cannot choose her from a list to restrict her access specifically. If I limit the access globally then I lose it for me as well. How do I limit access to just her so that she can see the folders we want but she only has READ access?
i have multiple family members in the household, along with two Windows 7 desktops and three Windows 7 laptops. All pc's are on the same workgroup with file and folder sharing working faultlessly - we do not use Homegroups.I have a large amount of important data on my desktop that serves as a data backup for all work I do on my laptop. On top of this it contains a large amount of media files that get shared to all pc's too. All communication is done over the network. However, as the other family members are far less tech savvy, shall we say, than I, I am growing concerned with how easy it would be for someone else to access my laptop backup work, as it is all business related, and do something disastrous to it.I would like to have it so that my laptop is the only machine allowed to access this backup data from my desktop. The rest of the shared folders on this desktop would have to remain accessible to 'everyone'.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have just purchased a new 3XS system from SCAN computers (Vengence). The system has a 120GB SSD and a 1TB HDD. The SSD is used for the OS and programs and the HDD is supposed to be data. The SSD seems to be working fine and Windows 7 agrees. The same can be said for the HDD, however when opening the HDD folder in Explorer and clicking properties, the system reports that there is only 300MB or so on the drive.I have enabled, intialised and assigned a letter to the drive myself, after it was not detected by the OS. I did so in device manager/disk drives by right clicking the drive. When in Properties/Volumes and populating the data, the HDD is recognised as 1TB. It just seems to be the (E folder in Explorer that the device is shown as 300MB. I have tried to drag and drop a 15GB program folder into the Device folder, but it informs me that there is not enough space on the disk to do so.

I downloaded Altap Salamader and deleted what I thought was the offending file from the folder, used CCleaner to clear the bin and restarted. I thought I was home-free, but then I realized that it is some other file in that folder. I tried deleting all the files. No go. I tried deleting the folder. No go. I even tried just renaming the folder and it tells me I have to get permission from me. I checked my permissions. I ran as admin. I even enabled the super-admin profile and tried it there.I tried restoring a previous version of the folder and it tells me it's successful, but it remains the same corrupted version.

kind of unusual this one. When I copy with right click everything works like a charm BUT I have 2 folders that have 1 letter names only, when I right click these to copy or cut I get this error and it crashes explorer and i have to restart explorer

View 3 Replies View RelatedA lot of people I have discovered within the last few days have had a problem with right clicking in explorer, causing it to crash. This occurs of Vista, and 7 (7100 atleast) when you install an app, and it installs a context menu shortcut or whatever.
The simple way to get rid of the crashing is by going to "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT*shellex ContextMenuHandlers" in regedit.exe, backing up the whole ConxtentMenuHandlers folder, and then start deleting all of them one by one (you can start with the ones you've been meaning to get rid of anyway ) and continuously testing the right click. Be careful not to click on an actual folder when opening of explorer after the crash because for me that seemed to solve the problem temporarily. Instead just open up your username folder and right click on a file until it stops. Of course import the Context folder after you find it, test explorer once again by right clicking to make sure you found the problem, and delete the file that caused the problem.
I have read the past posts regarding this issue and I have tried the so called hotfix that Microsoft issued regarding this issue but it did not work.

I have done the hotfix, I have ran check disk, I have run Norton 360, I did not have this problem before the last windows update. I even tried rolling back. I got fed up and ran the recovery disk that came with my laptop, and I still have the same problem.
