New Custom Built PC Will Not Turn Off

Jan 5, 2012

I recently built a new computer for my brother, and as of yesterday, the system will only power on, and the only way to power it off is by either turning off the PSU or unplugging the power cable, neither of which I feel particularly comfortable doing.

When the computer's power is off, the power can be turned on by pressing the power button. However, when the computer is on, pressing or holding in the power button does nothing. If the shutdown option is chosen from the start menu, the computer will go through the standard shutdown sequence, and the monitor will go to sleep, but the fans in the computer will continue to run. If the power button is pressed at this point, the computer will act as if it is turning on normally and boot into Windows properly.

This problem started late last night. Prior to then, the computer would shut down and power off normally. No hardware changes were made to the system between the last successful power down and the time in which this issue started.

System hardware:
OS: Windows 7 64-bit
RAM: 4GB DDR3 (Two 2GB sticks)
Processor: AMD Phenom II X2 560 Black Edition (3.3 GHz Dual Core)
PSU: Cooler Master RS-460-PSAR-J3
Motherboard: ASUS msq-m4n68t-mv2(b)
Hard Drive: Seagate Barracuda ES.2 500GB
GPU: NVidia GT250

BSOD On New Custom Built Computer

Jul 9, 2012

I recently built a computer and am getting BSOD's on a relatively frequent basis. After checking around I have no idea what the problem could be. This is the first build I have ever done. Here is what I know: Using WhoCrashed, it tells me that in 5/6 crashes it was related to ntoskrnl.exe, and in the 6th is was related to ntkrnlmp.exe,The BSOD's are not recurring, that is I will get one, then go back and do the same thing I was doing before, and it will be fine.

I have recently built a new computer and everything runs fine except almost EVERY game I play always crash. It takes me back to the desktop and I get the program has stopped working message after about 10-20 minutes. It not only crashes on highend games but minecraft and other lowend games crashes with the same error. All my drivers are updated, I have .net framework installed, I updated the bios, I ran memtest and it came up with no errors, I tried changing the compatibility to windows xp, it isn't overclocked and I tried rebooting everything. I'm not sure if its a problem with windows or the computer.

Freeze Ups And BSOD Events In Custom Built Computer

Dec 30, 2011

i have recently built a computer and i am experiencing frequent freeze-ups and bsod events with it. none of my previously built rigs have experienced this, and the most recent computer used several of the components currently in use, including the ssd, graphics card, case/ps, cpu cooler, and windows 7. [code] all of this has been assembled recently, though many of the components (listed above) have been in service for some time.nothing is overclocked.i have experienced more freeze ups than bsod. these have come at all different conditions, including web-browsing, watching video (both wm player and online Internet), downloading files while computer is unattended (i return and find computer unresponsive) and occasionally while gaming (mostly ms flight sim x). i have not determined a pattern.cooling is very good in the case, and the asrock board fan controllers maintain the cpu reported temp below 45c at idle and i have not seen the core temp above 60c in any situation other than a run of the program 'core damage'. i followed the directions for how to assemble a help thread for this forum, but i have not looked up any error codes yet (have not ever needed to with windows 7) so i will look into that in parallel.

New Custom Built Gaming PC Freezing Randomly - Cannot Open Task Manager

Nov 29, 2012

I recently bought a new custom built gaming PC and it works fine in terms of performance. I've had the PC for just over a week and on two occasions I have had the problem where the PC would just completely freeze to the extent that I can't open task manager, move the mouse and the keyboard would stop working. Also the Skype call I was in would just stop. This would force me to have to reboot my PC using the button on the tower to shut it down. So far the two occasions have happened when I'm not actually on a game and when the problems did happen I was using two different programs. The first occasion I was on OpenOffice and the second occasion. I was just browsing using Firefox so I don't think it is program specific.

Here are my specs:
Intel Core i5 3570K @ 3.4ghz
8gb 1333mhz ram
Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium
Gainward GTX 660ti
Asus P8Z77-V LX Motherboard
600w Xigmatek PSU

The first crash happened two days after owning the new pc, the second crash happened today. Is there anyway I could access a crash log?

Anyways I am managed to get all on my computer to have at least windows 7 home premium, and was wondering when the next new windows OS comes out, what is the cheapest way to upgrade. I think I will need around 10 licenses;Just get like 3 family packs of 3 licenses.I have heard about tecnet and MSDN subscriptions, what is the story on those.I am in school, and I hear you can get windows 7 for like $30, but I am guessing they will not let me get 10 copies for $30 each.

Cheapest Full OS With Product Key To Upgrade

Oct 26, 2009

From what I've gathered here, I need to have an OS of some kind with a Product Key to replace with my new Windows 7 Upgrade disk--at least that's the safest thing to do. Since I'm starting with a barebones computer and have no computers running 2000, XP or Vista which have a product key, I need to get my hands on a legit OS for cheap. Where would be a good place to start looking? Would I be better off buying the complete OS instead of trying to make use of my $8.00 educational upgrade disk?

In-place Upgrade Windows 7 64 Bit Ultimate Sp1

Oct 6, 2011

From windows 7 64 bit ultimate sp1 to windows 7 64 bit ultimate sp1.I do have to note I accidently deleted a partition with 100 games some weeks ago which caused some not clean leftovers in registry, but they are only games, not a single system/ application. So I don't think this is a cause for upgrade to fail. The point of this inplace upgrade repair is to fix all the security/ settings / rights to default.Since I have security issues, acces denied etc. and I had tried to fix them with all sorts of commands, Icalcs, subinacl etc. (for full details on security issue view my topic created here ul...)It said it had trouble with following devices when checking on compatibility.AWBN4A-HW IDE controller (yellow exclaimation mark) Alcohol 120% Daemon tools Dungeon siege legends of Aranna. But I don't even have any IDE devices. Only Sata.So I uninstalled the IDE controller and other programs and tried setup again it went through.I have also run windows 7 upgrade assistant and gave no trouble other then some videogames that were not recognised or might not work (i have 200 of em installed)After the upgrade it rebooted and it said it had failed and was reverting back to old..This is the setuplog I took from the upgrade folders: setupact.rar (1,22 MB) - uploaded.to Seems to be stopped @ 63%..Could someone tell me why my upgrade is failing?

Jumbled Icons In Windows 7 - Popping Up All Over The Place

I have made a set of directories for pictures of various old cars, and have added the car manufacturer's logos to each using Properties > Customize > Choose File. All very nice. But now I have those and other icons popping up all over the place. The Quicktime player icon has been replaced by the on from IconFX, for example. The JDownloader icon has disappeared entirely. I also have an icon on my MP3 folder that refuses to go away even after I click Restore Default. All very odd...

Windows 7 200mb Partition - With Recovery Partitions Already In Place?

May 4, 2009

I'm thinking of installing the RC of Windows 7 when it is released tomorrow. But there is one thing that is worrying me. When I go to install 7, i have read that it creates a 200mb partition. On my Acer laptop, there are already 4 paritions, a 9.76GB which does not show up as a drive, a 69.77GB which is labeled as 'ACER', a 66.27GB which is labeled 'DATA' and then a 3.24GB partition which again does not show up as a drive.I know that there is a recovery partition built in, will this 200mb parition affect them? I will be installing (using the upgrade) on to 69.77 Partition, or will it just spilt the 69.77 partition into two?

Will In-place Upgrade Of Working Windows 7 Destroy My Programs

Aug 10, 2012

I have a Windows 7-64 box that works perfectly. Except that I cannot install any driver past 270.61 for my nVidia GTX-580.nVidia said this is a known problem with many users due to "The install failed because a control panel binary is failing to register because of a missing dependency." In other words, one of their installers/un-installers has removed a dll that's needed.I don't have a free week of my life to re-install everything on the box from scratch. It was suggested on the EVGA forum that I might:" in-place upgrade install of the OS. In other words, insert your OS disk. Start the install and select 'Upgrade'.I have high end software like Maya, CS6, SQL Server and many others (but no games, this is a business machine with no extra software).

Folders Always Open In The Same Place?

This has been driving me nuts since i've had 7, but i really don't want to have to install some program to eliminate it. i really don't think i should have to. Every time I have a folder open, when i open another one it opens tight on top of the first one, they always are the same size which i don't want either. In other versions of windows i was always able to get each particular folder to open where i want on the desktop and any size i want by simply putting stretching it to the size i want and putting it where i want then closing it. It would open there every time thereafter even after restarting.

Guide To In-place Upgrade

Dec 6, 2009

A simple guide to a successful in-place upgrade

You have most likely heard that a clean (custom) install is the preferred install method when migrating to Windows 7. That is most certainly true. However, there are situations when in-place upgrade is more practical method to use. Tens, maybe hundreds of gigs software installed, no install media found for the software and so on.

You might have heard horror stories about non-working Seven and how it’s all in-place upgrade’s fault, or how an in-place leaves so much unwanted and not used pieces and bits it seriously puts your system in danger, at least making it slow. Most of these horror stories come from two types of users, those who have never done a Vista to Seven in-place upgrade but have heard third hand information and rumours, and those who have not prepared installation as it should be prepared.

I have done a lot of in-place upgrades, both from XP to Vista and lately from Vista to Seven. I have even successfully tried a one-session XP to Seven via Vista in-place upgrade (in-place XP to Vista, installing service packs and drivers and then directly in-place further to Seven), to show some colleagues how to do a safe and working upgrade. I have never encountered any upgrade related problems; I do have had my share of installation problems and issues but I’ve always found out that after failing to do an in-place upgrade, the same issue has occurred also after a clean install. Most often the reason is non-compatible hardware. You cannot blame in-place if your hardware refuses to work with Seven.

First, let’s take a look at the chart about in-place options:

As you can see it is not possible to "downgrade when upgrading" i.e. you cannot in-place upgrade from for example Vista Ultimate to Seven Home Premium. You need to have the same or better edition (notice that you can in-place upgrade to Seven Professional only from Vista Business). Your current Vista needs at least service pack 1 to be able to upgrade to Seven.

Notice please: You can only in-place upgrade to Windows 7 from Vista. Older Windows versions (XP, 2000 etc.) can not be in-place upgraded to Seven You cannot in-place upgrade a 32-bit Vista to a 64-bit Seven or 64-bit Vista to a 32-bit Seven The language versions have to match, you can in-place upgrade an English Vista only with an English Seven.

So, let’s start. This guide will show you how to prepare and do an in-place upgrade from Vista to Seven. Following these steps you are most likely to get it right first time.

1. Check the compatibility issues

Download and run Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor Follow any instructions given Uninstall all incompatible software, update drivers and software if Advisor tells so

2. Prepare your system

Update (flash) your system BIOS to most current version After flashing BIOS, restore it to factory defaults 3. Prepare your software setup.

Uninstall all applications and software you never use or which is expired (test and trial versions, software you know you are never going to use like the game you tested but didn’t like etc.) Update AV and Firewall software to the most current versions, including virus definitions Turn off AV, Firewall and all malware software. Remember to turn them on again after installation is finished Check and run Windows Update until it tells you Vista is up to date Clean up your system deleting all unnecessary files like temp folders etc. Backup your system 4. Prepare your hardware setup.

Check Device Manager to assure all devices are working Disconnect all external devices, leave only the main display, mouse and keyboard If upgrading a laptop, be sure it is connected to an AC power source. That’s it. Insert the install media and start doing an in-place upgrade. Please notice this is the most boring part of the process; an in-place upgrade can take hours.

An in-place upgrade can easily take longer than doing a clean install and re-installing all the software. If you don't have too much personal files to transfer, only have a limited amount of applications to re-install and if you have all install media, I recommend doing a clean install. Remember though there's nothing wrong doing an in-place upgrade. It works well and fine when done right.
