Cant Recover HD
Aug 29, 2012
I have a 300GB WD VelociRapter, a few years old, I bought to use as my C: drive because of the extra RPM/speed(supposedly). I partitioned it in half and it worked fine until recently it started intermittently getting BootMgr missing errors on startup. After trying and failing to fix the problem directly , I decided to install a different boot drive to fix the problem. The problem now is I cant get the VelociRapter to mount, Drive Mngr wants to initialize it, the handful of data recovery progs that i have run show no files to recover and the size to be 0.5 kb.

I was playing Dirt 2 the other day and when I pulled the the driving wheel out of the USB slot the BSOD screen showed up and the computer shut down.I tried to boot but it didn't load Widnows. The Startup Repair couldn't do anything, I don't have a mounted ISO of my sistem nor any restore points created.I can't even boot to safe mode.I checked the whole system with Kaspersky Rescue CD and it found 7 threats, including back doors, trojans and a worm. Kaspersky then deleted all the malitious files and as far as I know none of them were system critical. But windows still won't boot. What should I do?

I changed my motherboard and disconnected all of my drives apart from the one I thought was my C drive. Alas it was not and had some very important folders in it.I started to install windows and got to the drive option and formatted it and as soon as I had I realised which drive it was. I did not go any further with the installation so nothing has written over it.Can anyone advise what my options are if any to recover this drive?

This morning I wanted to install the software Alcohol 120%, which is a CD and DVD burning program. I wanted to create a CD with pictures of my recent vacation to Prague and it was highly recommended, so I downloaded it.When I started to install it, it said that I should restart my computer to finish the installation, and I figured that a lot of softwares requires this, so what should the problem be?When my computer did the restart I was shocked, because it said that it needed to recover.

When I first started using Windows 7 I had a windows XP partition along with a windows vista. I had all 3 OS's running smoothly and of course fell in love with 7. After getting my hand on a copy of 7 Ultimate I decided to buh bye Vista and Hello 7 as a whole OS, mind you I kept the XP installation running as well. After thinking about it for a while I decided to get rid of XP for good and just go with 7 to rule my PC, and somehow in the process I have the partition that used to be XP unoccupied but yet cannot use it.
It says it is a Health (system, Active Primary partition) this is a 150GB partition which completes the other half to where my windows 7 is. I want to recover that space so I can have one full 300GB. How can I do that, and any ideas how I messed that up? My system is working fine as it is, and I can really live with it, but mind you that's 150GB of space that's just not being used.
I was thinking partition Magic could help me on this one.
Any helps on how I can get that back?

My PC came with a Recovery Program, but I also made DVDs. I did a clean install of Windows 7 but it became too much hassle reinstalling my Drivers and whatnot, so I'm just going back to how it came with all the bloatware, which I will remove manually.
Is it better/safer to use the Program or DVDs.

a family member has recently asked for my help in finding some photos they have lost. Basically, what happened was; they attatched their mobile Phone via USB, then opened up the photos from the phones storage in windows explorer, then cut them, and got sidetracked into some other work, and whilst in a rush they shut down the laptop without pasting the photos anywhere, they cannot find the photos on the laptop or the phone's Internal storage, I will pay a visit soon as the pictures are important as they are of their 11 week old daughter, I will have a deeper search, but does anyone have any suggestions for me to try?

I just used O&O's Disk Recovery 6, trying to reover from files from a drive that I had repartitioned. It works modestly well, as far as actually recovering the files, once you sort through all of the possible files that it finds, but like in the case at hand, there are over 300,000 files, and the version that I use only lets me recover 1000 at a time. I know that they have a newer version without this limit, but even so it would still require endless rummaging to find exactly what you want, because it scans the entire drive, without letting one set a search zone, and it labels all of the files with it own numbering system, rather than the files original identity.

I had about 15 files recovered/saved by an abnormal shutdown. These were named File0000. chk to File0014. chk.First I tried renaming them with the likely extensions I use most often, such as .xlsx and .docx for Excel and Word. This successfully recovered over 1/2 of my files. Now I have 5 files remaining, which aren't yet recoverable, even trying other extensions like .pdf, .txt, and .jpg but no luck on those.I also downloaded and ran the free UnCHK at ericphelps.com and this recovered 1 more file. url...With my 5 remaining files, I tried joining some of them, thinking that maybe that might solve something, but that hasn't worked yet.I haven't yet tried joining different combinations of 3 file fragments into 1, as the permutations of 3, 4, or 5 files would be time consuming.
Here is an example of the code to join 2 files. copy /b file0099.jpg + file0001.chk test. jpg..The above would take the partially recovered file0099.jpg file and add the contents of file0001.chk to it, storing the result in test.jpg. You'd then have to try opening the test.jpg file to see if that helped.

I have an external HDD (WD MyBook) that fell from a height of about 7 inches. The computer(s) will recognize it but say it's not initialized which means the boot records are fine. There are no grinding or any kind of noises at boot-up so the needle and platter seem to be ok. I started a complete recovery in EASEUS, but it's been 2 hours and it only found 54 files so far. (I know there are hundreds). Usually, on formatted drives, the number of "total files found" add up pretty quickly on this software and it is able to scan a 1TB drive in about 5 - 6 hours. This is the first time that I'm seeing such a slow reading of the drive. (Which makes me wonder again if it's physically damaged). since it's know that the best method of recovery is to start the recovery process as soon as possible, for any usage of the drive will reduce the success rate of recovery. But I'm thinking that if I just allow Windows to initialize the disk and format it with a quick format, that the only thing I'm ruining is the table, which EASEUS doesn't care about since it analyzes the disk by sectors.
