Cannot Toggle "Sort By" Or "Align To Grid" On Desktop?
Jun 26, 2012
I'm not exactly what software change caused this to happen or when it happened, but it appears that I cannot enable any sorting of my desktop icons, nor change the grid-alignment setting, disallowing me to move my icons wherever I want them.
I'm running Win 7 Pro 64 bit. I always uncheck 'Align icons to grid' under View (on Desktop). Yet every time I reboot it's checked again. Can someone tell me how to keep it from being checked (activated) when I reboot?
I have a really annoying problem with desktop icons.I use 2 monitors. 1920x1200 is the main dislay and 1600x1200 is another one for extended desktop. The thing is that I don't need it all the time so I'd like to switch the extended desktop on and off when I need it. Problem is that entering the ex. desktop just somehow changes the grid (it seems that the grid becomes more compressed in vertical direction). That means that it always messes my icons up. I don't know why do the Windows change the grid when I do not change the resolution or just anything that could possibly affect the main screen.
I would like to slide my icons closer to the edge and bunch them up more. I don't see a "snap-to-grid" attribute anywhere, but that's what I think is happening.
I stumbled upon an old XP desktop appearance adjustment in Windows 7 which allowed me to set the spacing between desktop icons, both horizontal and vertical. You could also choose the font and the font size and, most importantly, the icon size. I was delighted. I could order my icons just the way I needed them for my busy desktop. But then my water-cooled processor water pump broke and spilled water in my tower. Hours later, I had an air cooler on the processor and all was right again.I could not remember how I came to that wonderful desktop grid adjustment box.I searched for a long time but have not been able to track it down. So now I wonder if any of you savvy experts could be kind enough to point the way?
I tried the repair but no effect. My issue is, the SORT BY is gone from the content right click on the Desktop. My Laptop is identical including the OS Home Preminum 64bit and it has the SORT BY but it disappeared from my Desktop. Someone said to get rid of FENCES and I did but still no SORT BY.
I save a lot of folders on my desktop. For the most part they are sorted alphabetically, from A to Z, with no problem.
For the last several months, if something is named numerically, they are saved backwards. In other words, if I have files named 001, 002, 003 instead of showing up in 001-002-003 sort order, they show up in 003-002-001 sort order.
How do I change this back to the original 001-002-003 sort order?
I have Intel X-25M 80 GB SSD. I want to install Windows 7 Pro x64, MS Office and other application on it.Should I create partition primary align=1024 or Create partition primary size=100 align=1024?
Has anyone got the Race Driver GRID demo to work? I don't know if they have different versions of the demo, but the demo I downloaded from the Codemaster's web-site runs, let's me create a profile, then the graphics keep changing in and out and a "Loading" logo goes around in circles but the game never actually starts, no hard-drive activity, etc. Anyone?
How in the world can I make the icons stick to their spot on the grid?I find that when I finish with my e-mail and return to the main screen, some of the icons have shifted.I return them to their spot only to find it happen the next time I leave and return.
I downloaded the demo of Race Driver - Grid from the Codemaster's web-site. While it installed and lets me create a profile, to start the game it states "Loading", with no hard-disk activity and just stops at that point. Leaving it for 10 minutes results in nothing happening. Anyone else experience this?
I know MCE gives you the option once to go to list view. But if you don't do it at the first offer, how can you toggle to list view (and perhaps back to normal view) after that? I can't find anything in settings, etc.
I use two powerplans and have created a shortcut/icon for each. Is it possible to create a single icon that will toggle between the two plans?I also have an open dvd door icon and a close dvd door icon that I would like to reduce to a single button/ion/shortcut operation. I am guessing the solution for one is the same/similar as the other? Currently, I have a shortcut/icon for 1. & 2. of the following that I would like to to have just one shortcut/icon or 'key' that toggles between the two :
Any new computer mouse with a toggle switch instead of a scroll wheel? I have a Sony mouse with that arrangement but the left click is getting a bit erratic. I suppose I could replace the switch but it would be easier to get a new mouse when this one finally quits. The toggle makes it much easier to scroll through long documents than roll, roll, roll the wheel.
I'm about one month and some change new to Win 7 Pro and seem to have two problems that continue to elude me:
1. After installing several programs, trying to mimic my XP Pro, I restarted my PC only to find, what I believe was a "Toggle" button, which allowed me to select it and see all RUNNING windows in a somewhat 3D manner. Yes, I'm using Aero. Well, it disappeard; it used to be right in the center of the taskbar.
2. For reasons beyond my imagination, the command prompt displays for a split second and then disappears. I had the same problem in XP Pro. The only way it worked then, was for me to access the command via programs>accessories.
I'm trying to sort out issues with my Windows 7 machine and want to disable/set to manual services that I know are not needed, but every time I have done this in the past (a while ago now) I invariably run into an issue where I've inadvertently disabled a service that was needed by something, and I end up scratching my head (as all of my hair falls out around this point) and enabling everything just to sort it..
Is there any utility that anyone is aware of that lets you toggle service status, with the option to reset to default or reset to last status, while showing a list of services that I've changed?
I can't seem to word it properly for a search engine to find relevant results, and find usually specific services and not something I'm hoping exists.
I wish the Services.msc mmc had a checkbox or some sort of flag to show altered services so you could sort them by that, which would help a lot, but it doesn't.
this function (sort by file Extension) didn't add to windows 7 , So when I use xp I used small free tool called cpext but when I try to add it with windows 7 nothing happen So I need this tool or any alternative do the same job (add option to sort by extension)
Somehow my sort order has been changed somehow. On another post I see that it goes to the view tab to change the order, however the view tab is not shown when I open a folder. What I see is "organize, share with, Burn, and new folder. I would like to change back to normal aphabetical order.
When I do a search on how to sort, I get a Tutorial that tells me to open the "View" Menu item. However, as you can see from the attached, I don't have a VIEW menu on my Folder. I would like to sort these by file type so that I can save them to a CD. What am I doing wrong here?
wasn't sure where to post this. i have a ton of files and folds to file away. i would like it when i choose sort by name to not just do the folders first then the files after the folders. i mean i want say folder abc, file abc, folder bcd, file bcd instead of folder abc, folder bcd, file abc, file bcd. it would make it so much faster to sort through what can be deleted before moving what i want to keep.
Can't see how to sort the results of a "Windows Search" - the search you launch from the Start button, not the search you do in Windows Explorer. I've tried menus, and right clicking everywhere.
I had Windows 7 Home Premium put on my HP Pavilion a6500f last week. I had this same problem with Vista 64-bit but not with Windows XP. I have my file "Sort by" set to Name; Ascending but when I open a file it always moves to the end position when I close it. As an example say I have a folder named Book A. Inside that folder are files named Chapter 1, Chapter 2, Chapter 3, and Chapter 4 in that order. If I open and edit Chapter 2 when I close it the files are now in this order: Chapter 1, Chapter 3, Chapter 4, and Chapter 2. How do I make the files stay in the proper sort order? It's very irritating to have to move files back into their correct order every time.
When I open any window maximised, the taskbar is hid behind. The super key does return the taskbar until the window is made active again. The windows also take up full vertical space on the screen - no space is left for the taskbar, which I think maybe the real problem.
sort files and folders alphabetically yet? I have my music on an external hard drive. I have a folder for every artist, and in those folders theres a folder for each album. The only thing on this hard drive is music. In Windows XP, I could sort by name and show in groups. This way everything was kept alphabetical, all the A bands were under A , all the B bands were under B With Windows 7 I get gigantic chunks of A-H, I-P and Q-Z. I have over nearly 600 folders on this drive. Grouping all those folders into 3 giant blocks is nothing short of useless. Is there any way at all to sort like XP?
I can't get my WLM to sort by date, either ascenting or descending. New emails end up all over the place and I have to go down the list to find them. In the columns I have the date selected, along with "subject" and "from" and that's all. I did a repair of Windows Live Essentials, but it didn't help.
I understand that by right clicking on the sorting bar you can choose and add dozens of ways to sort your files. How do I apply one (Date Accessed) not just for one folder, but for on the folders on my drive?
