Cannot Delete Empty Folders In Windows 7 - Access Denied

Jun 27, 2011

I am trying to delete some useless empty folders, but I am having an administrator issue that I can't seem to get around. I know already that I'm probably having this administrative problem because these folders are located on a separate hard drive than the one with my old and current installation of Windows 7. From what I've read, this leads to administrative issues, preventing me from deleting the folders. Right now, windows cannot detect who the current administrator is, and so far, every time I have tried to edit or change the administrator to my current admin account, I get some errors reporting that my access is denied. I have managed to change the parent folder's admin, but the two subfolders I can't ever seem to change or modify.

'Access Denied' To Folders?

Sep 16, 2012

After backing up my files to another drive, I couldn't access some of the files on my C: drive [the one I backed up files from to my D: drive]. I'm always on the administrator account, and there are no other users on this computer, and I've set the file so that the administrator has full control over it.Normally, I should be able to access the files [for example, my 'My Documents' and my 'My Videos' folders are unaccessible].

Shortcut Folders With Access Denied

Nov 23, 2009

I have just upgraded to 7 from xp pro. When I open my username folder there are several folders with the shortcut arrows on them. When I click on one all I get is the "access denied" popup box. Just to let you know that there are also similar folders without the shortcut arrows which I can open, like My Documents and Local Settings and Nethood. What I want to know can I delete these shortcut or link files from my username folder?

Cannot Delete Folder - Access Denied

May 7, 2011

I have just reinstalled my pc to a dual boot system which has 3 separate hdds. Window xp on one drive windows 7 ultimate on one drive and the other is a slave for backups. On the win7 install I ended up with a folder called "program files" and a folder called "program files (x86)". Since everything was being installed into the "x86" folder, Idecided to move the other one to see if it was needed. When I discovered it was needed and certain programs wouldn't work I put it back. However for some reason I didn't just put it back I copied and pasted it back. so now i have 3 "program files" folders! I now want to delete the duplicate but no matter what I do it won't go, access is denied! I have renamed it and moved it so it is now jus sitting on my win7 desktop, staring at me!

Methods I have tried are:
Reset all permissions/attributes
Boot into xp and delete from there.
Boot from a live xp disc.
Can't move folder onto another drive.
Run as administrator then get message saying "permission from trusted installer needed"
Tried the rd/s/q command in win7, xp and at boot up.
Safe mode.

And have tried various programs, killbox etc.

Trying To Delete Program Files / Access Denied

Dec 22, 2011

I've been attempting to delete files from Norton Internet Security, which has been inactive for a long time (we are not going to renew our account) and has been bugging us constantly. I assumed it would be an easy task, and I couldn't have been farther from the truth.I went into the C:Program Files (x86)Norton Internet Security where the data for the program is found, and I couldn't delete the files. A dialogue saying "You need permission to perform this action You require permission from administrators to make changes to this folder".I thought it weird, since I am one of the computer's administrators. Next, I logged on to my dad's profile (at his insistence, though there shouldn't be any difference in the administrator powers of our profiles). The same result followed.Next, I looked online in a Google search and found this site, which told me to use the command prompt to first give me the ownership of the files, then give me complete permissions to the files, and then delete them. All three of these actions failed. The command prompt said "Access denied".

Access Denied Errors / Itunes Music Folders

Feb 13, 2010

Okay, it's all still there but here's my issue in detail: I was trying to reorganize my itunes/music folders. The way I have been doing it is I basically have my music in 2 different folders (iTunes and another seperate music folder). I did this because I am a bit new to how iTunes organizes my music and I like having my music in folders the way I want.

Anyway that's not the issue; the issue is I decided to start fresh with deleting all my iTunes music (still stewing in recycle bin) and just do the the old drag and drop from my backup music folder. So I just dragged all my folders into iTunes. Then I went to browse my music folders (non iTunes) and it keeps giving me a "Permission Denied"

If it makes any difference all my media music/videos are stored on external Seagate 320GB HD. I can still access all my Videos but every time I try to open any of my music folders I get the this error "you do not have permission to view this object's security properties"

Well I got past that buy changing that folders permissions under advanced. The issue I have now is I have to do this for EVERY FOLDER AND EVERY FILE/SONG IN THOSE FOLDERS.

What did I do, and is there a easier way to fix this?

"Denied Permission To Access Folders"?

Feb 18, 2010

Yesterday I reformatted my PC, everything went just fine. However, when I'm now trying to access a folder in my (D hard drive I get "you have been denied permission to access this folder" I do know how to fix the problem folder and files each, but how can I fix this error for my hole (D hard drive? Is there a more simple way to fix this without going through all my files? There's also "unknown" users with numbers that have access to the files, like it would be my old user before reformat. How can I remove them the most simple way?I also want to know why did this happen? I have reformatted before and didn't encounter this problem, and I can't think of anything that would make this happen. How can I prevent this from happening again? I reformatted my PC after fixing some of the access to see if it would happen again, and it did.I also noticed that on some folders there are a lock on the icon, as well as that most of the folders are write protected and I cant remove

Windows 7 Folders Are Empty?

Apr 20, 2011

I'm having a very strange issue after I did a boot time virus scan in Avast to remove a virus. Avast seems to have removed the virus just fine, however I can't get Windows to show directories or files any more.If I open Windows Explorer and go to C:Users it says the folder is empty. However if I right click and select properties, it calculates the folder as 10.8 GB. I can still log in fine and run software etc. This problem isn't just in the C:Users folder. My library directories show empty and I was immediately afraid I lost all of my pictures because searching for *.jpg on my system yields no results. However, I remembered the exact path to one of the file names and sure enough it opened the picture. For example when I enter the exact address in Windows Explorer:C:UsersMyUserNamePictures2011MyPic.jpg it opens. But if I list C:UsersMyUserNamePictures2011 it says "folder is empty". One more thing to mention is that I tried browsing files through the command prompt. Whenever I try to do a directory listing with the dir command I get the error: Volume in drive C has no label. Volume Serial Number is 2AEE-FDC8. File not found. However, I can still cd into existing directories that I know exist. I just can't list the directories or files. Unfortunately I upgraded to Windows 7 SP1 right after this happened because I thought it might fix the problem. Now I can't do a system restore to the point where my computer wasn't having this problem.

Access Vista Shares From XP But Not From Windows 7 (access Denied)

Sep 20, 2011

I have one PC running Vista (home basic), one running XP (professional) and one running Windows 7 (home basic). There is a printer connected to the Vista box, which is shared.

On the XP box I can both see and use the printer on the Vista box (i.e. a "net view \vistabox" shows the printer, and under "printers and faxes" I can install and use it).

On the Windows 7 box, however, I can see the Vista box (i.e. a "net view" shows it in the list of available PCs on the network) but a "net view \vistabox" gives me an "access denied" error.

The Windows 7 machine has a password on it, the Vista and XP machines don't. All machines are on the same workgroup name (which is "WORKGROUP"). On the XP box I don't need a password to access the shared printer on the Vista machine; it just works.

Extensive Googling has failed to render enlightenment, nor has browsing this forum. I'm sure it has something to do with security and passwords, somewhere, somehow, but I have no idea in which direction to look for it, let alone fix it. I have also read some things about workgroups and homegroups not being the same in Windows 7, but I'm not sure if this is correct (and if so, relevant).

Empty Folders Appearing In C:\ (not Hex)

Jul 12, 2012

I have a couple of Windows 7 machines that have suddenly had several empty folders appear in the root directory of the c drive.

The odd part about it, they are all labelled <computername>.1234 or four to five seemingly random numbers. They aren't a jumble of hex numbers that I'd expect from Windows Update in XP (which is pretty much the only thing google has spat out for me on this issue). I'm trying to find out if this is a virus or what sort of software might be creating these folders. I did a full MBAM of the system, as well as a full GMER scan, and gave it a shot with TDSSKiller as well a Sophos AV and they have all found nothing. I also took a look using process explorer and autoruns and I didn't find anything suspicious as far as I could tell so I don't think it's malicious. I just want to figure out what could be creating them, or if anyone had heard of this issue.

Folders On Unit Are Empty?

Feb 14, 2013

A client brought in a Dell laptop with a missing driver. A tech downloaded a driver onto a flash drive. I'm not sure of where the driver came from. When the flash drive was put into the computer it started loading something and the tech pulled it out and restarted the unit. After reboot the tech noticed that the start menu was empty. Typical of a hidden files infection. After a second reboot the unit goes straight to startup repair. I pulled the HDD out of the unit and hooked it up to another computer with an enclosure. The drive reads as 99.9% free space. All of the the folders are there but they all show as empty (0 bytes). The recovery partition is intact and the drive passes Dell diags. Any ideas on recovering the data? I'm sure I could just restore it but the client needs the data.

File Folders Empty Can't Download From Email?

May have a virus or had a virus due to a possible lapse of McAfee virus scan. Have a Dell (dec 2009 Desktop) with a Window 7 OS and Office 2007 Software. I did a restore to an earlier date hoping to restore settings but it didn't change.resently in my document folder are a first level of folders, when I pass my mouse over the folder it indicates that there empty, but I bought an external drive and when i moved the folders to the drive and read the drive / viewed the folders on another one of my computers they are complete and contents are visible. If I open excel or word and open a recent document it opens and if I look at the properties it points to the folders that otherwise show to be empty. Might be a separate problem but the same cause of the problem, when i view my yahoo mail and click a document for download, I select document download and I see nothing after that.

BackUp And Restore Creates Empty Folders?

Nov 9, 2011

I had to use the Dell Back up and Restore to rebuild my OS and , except for all my email history, address book, profile and bookmarks, I seem to be up and running again. I want to back up to a WD MY Book 1tb external on a regular basis so I don't loose all my programs and profile.

I followed the easy instructions I found here on the Forum for a full system backup and watched the green bar progress to 10-15% complete and left the room. When I returned hours later the screen said "improper shut down" or something similar. When I rebooted there was a backup folder on my external but folder properties indicated it was completely empty.

The next day I tried to create a System Image Bup (Shadow Copy?) and the green bar progressed normally but, when I returned to the PC, the black dos screen said unable to find some file to boot. Again, folders were created but they were empty.

Does Windows 7 BU and restore normally restart the computer after creating a backup file? If so, can I prevent this so I can see where the program is breaking down?

I did create a System Repair disk on a DVD and it seems to have created that okay. The file is almost 300mb so I hope that means it will work if I ever need it.

I do know this new MY Book is a lot more complicated than my other Seagate external and seems to want to format and name files for me?
