I'm working on a Windows 7 laptop for which the user has forgotten the password. So, putting my windows 7 DVD in, I boot into System Recovery and go to a command window. I try to change the user password for "User X" as it displays at login, and the system kindly informs me "User X" doesn't exist.
Using net user, I see that the only two users that exist are "Administrator" and "Guest". So, I activate administrator using "net user administrator /activate:yes". Then I change the password of administrator.
Rebooting into safe mode, I find "User X" and "Guest" still my only options. I try the password I set for administrator (since User X doesn't exist), but that doesn't work.

I want to set system policy to force password change. It is my understanding that Windows 7 group policy editor is not availible with Windows 7 basic or Home Perimum. This being the case does this mean that there is no way to change policy these to versions or just that the policy editor itself is not available.

I have a desktop and a laptop both running Windows 7 Ultimate x86. My desktop is being primarily used as a media server with external hard drives attached to it. I was able to share my external hard drives over the network and my laptop was able to detect them. Right now "password protected sharing" is turned off, but I want to turn it on so that no one except me can access that network. My question is, what is my user name and password? It asks me for my user name and password but I never set one up. Is there a way to find out what my user name and password is? And is there a way to change it so I can pick my own user name and password?

I cannot remember a password I had set on Windows 7. The user is set to have administrative privileges. How can I reset the password without losing any data. When testing on another machine, i went into local users and groups, right click and it gives me the option to reset password, but a message comes up to say that i might lose information if I reset the password this way:(

We bought as exdisplay PC & they told us it would be restored to factory settings. When i start up it immediately tells me user name & password is incorrect. I click okay & it wants me to log into kiosk. From there I have to switch user. I've looked in user accounts a dozen times - there is only on user account (admin) & it's in my name. So where or what is kiosk? I've done the whole "regedit" thing but I don't have a default folder under profiles.

I want to have a Factory Reset of my computer. In order to launch a System Recovery, I need to create Restore Discs. When I launch the Recovery Disc Creation, it says:"This computer does not have a burning drive, which is required to make DVDs. Please contact HP Support for asistance."My computer did not come with a build in CD Drive. Even plugging in a USB CD Drive will not make creating the discs possible. So. I ask you.
