Can't Reverse Recent Windows 7 Update?
Aug 26, 2012
On 20th August various Windows updates were installed on my computer one of which was an update to my USB Wireless Mouse. The changes they have made to this are a total pain and I want to revert back to the way it was before the updateThis appears in my Update history;Microsoft - Other hardware - Microsoft Hardware USB Wireless MouseInstallation date: 20/08/2012 04:07Installation status: SuccessfulUpdate type: OptionalMicrosoft Other hardware software update released in May, 2012But when I check in Installed Updates it is not there! It was installed, it was a successful update as stated above and it has made changes to the way my mouse settings are applied. How can I get shot of this update if it doesn't appear in installed updates and more to the point why doesn't it appear

I have a ipod touch and a toshiba laptop running win 7. I recently got an email to say that the latest version of the touch software is available. I clicked through and downloaded the update All was well, all music, video apps etc all as before. Pictures however have all gone! further more they have gone from the mypictures place on win 7!
I have tried rolling back the update, system restore etc but no joy. I can still see the shortcuts to the picture folders in recent places but cannot access the pictures.
Im not sure if this is an apple issue or a windows issue ill timed? Does anyone have any advise of how I might be able to access these pictures again? Ill try anything and of course i dont have a backup! (no one buys a house alarm until you get robbed!)

I have recently installed Windows 7 RC and was happily using the recent items to access a particular mp3 I use often. Now, for some reason, Recent Items on the Start Menu only seems to display links to documents and saved web pages. It will not store the mp3 I use or any piece of music for that matter. I'm assuming it won't display media items in general.

Windows 7 desktop annoys me in the way it sorts desktop icons.
Say I add an icon and want it alpha sorted with the existing desktop icons. Right click on the desktop and Sort by ==> Name. The icons are sorted in reverse alpha order. To get them sorted in forward alpha order, I have to do the right-click-sort-by-name process again.
How can I get Windows 7 to always sort the desktop icons in forward alpha order instead of alternating between forward and reverse order?

I have a sony vaio j series all in one pc. Everything has been running fine, I had never had a problem with it.... UNTIL last night I got home, and my sister said that she accidentally unplugged the computer, and she says the computer automatically started a system restore that DELETED ALL OF MY FILES. When I turned it on, the screen began to see "PREPARING FOR FIRST TIME SETUP" and then prompted me to register the computer, just like the first day that I turned it on. I thought that in order to restore back to factory settings you had to have the cd's from sony?? I already looked at the system restore wizard and there is no restore points that I can reverse it to. What can I do?

My gateway laptop with win 7 64 froze up on me in startup. I made a system disk and backups for it and my daughters when I bought them. I have the backup on a simpledrive 500gb. When trying to restore it the only imageackup was Hers. It would not recognize mine(labeled His). Well, having no other option I clicked on Hers and now my gateway thinks its her Acer. My usbs dont work.

XP and Vista were simple to reverse, but I cannot find the settings in Win 7. I am constantly moving screens between monitors, but instead of dragging them "from one monitor" to "the other" in a straight motion, I have to drag in the opposite direction, away from the second monitor, to have it appear there.
Okay, petty I know, but it drives me nuts!
Anyone know where the setting is located?

Every day or two, Windows 7 is REVERSE dimming on me and I can only fix it with a reboot. What I mean is, suddenly when the AC Adapter is PLUGGED IN, the screen will be DIM (Even though control panel shows it as max brightness on the slider). But then once I UNPLUG the adapter, the screen is bright like its supposed to be..For the life of me I can't figure it out, but it's driving me to the point of insanity because I keep having to reboot so often.

[code] Four days ago I did a complete hard drive backup. On the 6th, and last disc I was told that it didn't properly close the session. 3 days ago something happened, while using Unlocker program to delete malware. My 2 user accounts would not open, until after I opened my admin account. So I decided to do a factory restore. I skipped the backup HDD, since I had just completed one the day before, and didn't was to chance backing up malware. After the factory restore completed, all was working ok. But when I tried to restore my HDD backup, the system said it was looking for a backup of May 15, 2011. I doesn't recognize my backup of 4 days ago.Is there any way possible to get Win 7 to accept the most recent backup??

I went to open a video, and when it asked me what program I wanted to use to open it, I clicked Windows Media Player.
But I forgot to un-check the "Always Use This Program to Open This Type of File" box, and this resulted in a very annoying problem:
Every item on my desktop is now a Windows Media Player icon, and worst of all: when I click on one of those shortcuts, it opens Windows Media Player--not the actual program or shortcut!
Same with the taskbar--all the icons are now WMP icons.
Is there some feature or command I can use to "revert" everything back to the icon it's supposed to be, and allow my shortcuts and files to open normally again?

I was just wondering if it is possible to reverse engineer a 32-bit application and recompile it as a 64-bit application. If so, would it still function?I don't know if talking about reverse engineering is acceptable in this forum or not. If not, my apologies. Also, I don't exactly know how "legal" it is or if it's against any EULAs.I'm a heavy browser user. I use Firefox Nightly and constantly have several tabs open. I also run several different applications at once and occasionally Skype. I'm CONSTANTLY hitting the 32-bit barrier for RAM (can't remember if it's 3.1, 3.2 or 3.3 GB) and I still have more RAM on my system. I'm thinking the video quality on Skype starts going south when I run low/out on addressable memory since it's a 32-bit application

Had a HDD failure - just replaced it and a clean install of W7 32 bit. I had been carrying out regular backups using Backup wizard and a have a recent backup set. How do I restore form that. Alternatively I have a separate backup of my documents etc. As a straight save. Would I be better to just drag them back onto new build and not bother with restore.

Before the most recent MS security updates my Windows 7 seemed ok.
After the security updates the image previewer freezes a lot when I'm clicking the arrows to go between images. It'll work fine for a few images and then freeze. Sometimes it'll recover and work after a few moments and other times it says "Loading" forever.

I unfortunately listened to the husband of one of my wife's friends and ran CCleaner on my Win 7 PC and now the Recent Items list on my Start Menu, which I use a lot, is totally fouled up. The settings are correct and I've edited the registry but the number of items displayed is never consistent, never more than 6, and sometimes disappearing completely, whereas I have it set to store 10 items.

I am currently using a different computer to ask for help, Everytime I startup my computer it says "Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. Of course, normally their is Launch Startup Repair, And Start windows normally. If I press enter on either of those it says "windows is loading files" It does that twice with a white bar then returns me to the same screen with the same 2 options. It is the same problem no matter what, I have tried pressing enter on startup to go to safe mode, but safe mode does the exact same thing. I tried going to the system recovery page, it does the same thing, cannot access anything on my computer. But, if I enter on Star windows normally twice, it does indeed say starting windows, then back to same screen first time, Then second time it will go to Aptio setup utility-Copyright (c) 2011 american megatrends, inc. It has the Main, Advanced, Security, Boot, Exit options with computer specs, product information so on so forth. I have absolutely no idea what any of these do, so I usually exit and again the process repeats, I go back to the 2 options, they either bring me to that Aptio Setup page, or back to the same page. It's frustrating that I cant use system recovery since it goes to the same page and Startup repair wont work, I have absolutely no idea what to do and am in need of serious help. This problem occured when a windows thing popped up saying "A virus may be on your computer" generally I clicked it, my computer shut down automatically and thats what started this whole repetetive process.

I'm running Windows 7 64 bit on a gigabyte ga-x58a-ud3r
A few weeks ago, I shut down my PC completely for a regular cleaning. I do a regular cleaning once a month, this was the first time I had an issue.
After I finished, I powered up the machine, and Windows would continually fail to start - rebooting at some point while the Logo load screen was up.
After several Google searches, I tried pretty much everything I could think of or advice i came across - Nothing worked. I could not boot from the Win7 Disk, System Repair did not work, advanced boot options did not work, etc. At this point I thought the HDD might be bad (WD Caviar Black 1 TB).
So I went and purchased a new HDD, the same model actually as it was on sale. Windows installed fine, everything got up and running with no issue.
I then took my HDD which I had believed had failed and plugged it into a Thermaltake BlacX Docking station and I was able to locate the drive in the device manager after scanning for new hardware.
I actually was able to go into the hard drive and recover the few bits of data I hadn't backed up (mostly gaming files). The HDD was completely fine. Fast forward a few weeks, and feel free to laugh at me here - I'm in the exact same situation with the new HDD once again after cleaning my PC case.
So, I'm not sure what is happening. I've rebooted the PC many times without issue but today was the first time that I fully powered down the PC to do a cleaning.
I suspect something is causing Windows to fail to recognize the HDD itself, but honestly this is way beyond my knowledge how to fix. I took a risk and I removed the sata cable from the "GSata" slot on the motherboard and put it into one of the standard ICHR10 - to no effect.
I've once again exhausted every option I actually know how to safely do, advanced boot options, repair attempt from Win7 Disk, etc. Nothing is working. I'm debating running out yet again and grabbing a cheap HDD just to get myself up and running again, but I thought I'd turn to Tom's Hardware first for some ideas - and because I don't want to be going through this issue everytime I want to give the PC case a good cleaning.

I'm out of ideas. I've been running Win 7 on this machine for more than a year without issues in updating etc. Now it will not search or update/install critical items. I'm running Symantec (even tried turning the firewall off without any success). I get an error code 80072F7C. When I run hijackthis, I get an error message that my system denied write access to the Hosts file. I proceed with the scan but am unable to produce a log file. I've included a screenshot from the windows update error as well as the error I get when trying to run hijack this.

The update is called:
nvidia - Graphics adapter WDDM1.1, Graphics Adapter WDDM1.2, Other hardware - NVIDIA GeForce GT 425M.
After installing it, whenever my laptop tries to use the Nvidia card, I get a blue screen and the system restarts. I looked in installed updates to uninstall it, and it is not there. I did a system restore to four days before I installed it, and I still get the same effect. Lastly, I installed some older nvidia drivers that used to work using the clean install option, and I still have this problem.

A while back, after successfully downloading and installing some updates in the Windows Update, it prompted me to restart the computer to finish the update installation process. However, I continued to use the computer for quite some time before restarting it, and then when it tried to configure the updates on the start-up screen, it showed that it was not successful in doing so. In the past, I noticed that this would typically happen when I did not restart the computer immediately (or within a short time) after the updates finished and I got the prompt to restart. I would have to go to Windows Update and do it over again, and then upon immediate restart, it would always work properly. But this time, it did not, and I keep getting the 8000FFFF error message instead.
Also, now, every time I start the computer, it shows that it's "Preparing to configure Windows... Do not shut off computer" (presumably the updates that never got completely and correctly configured) in the start-up screen... gets to 35%..fails... shuts down (screen goes black)... restarts again... tries to configure again, fails again, shuts down and restarts again... tries to configure again, fails again, and finally it apparently gives up and says "reverting changes" and finally goes to the desktop.I've looked at the answers in several threads at the answers.microsoft.com forum that were started by people with similar problems, and also tried several of the Microsoft "FixIt" files on the Microsoft site, but none of them worked. I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium.
