Can't Download Programs Into Win 7

Jan 5, 2010

I can not download Google Earth to my new WINDOWS 7 laptop; 4GB MEM; 320HD The Google Earth Installer downloads but the actual program does not install into my program files nor show as a desktop icon. I am asking for this right from the Google Earth page. This download is bundled with Google Chrome and this Chrome downloads to my list and desktop. I tried
the download from both Firefox, first and Internet Explorer, second.

Might the Google Earth program be tightly wound within Google Chrome somewhere? I can not see it? Shall I try to download G Earth from this 'Chrome' which seems to be a browser of some kind.

Can No Longer Install Programs Or Modify Existing Programs

Feb 9, 2011

So over the past few days it seems that I have lost control of my C drive and all of its contents.I can no longer properly access it, and everything opens in "Read-Only". I can no longer install programs or modify existing programs.According to the security permissions, I have none. Nor can I change my permissions because in order to change them I need access to the C drive, which I don't have.I have tried creating other users and putting them in the admin group, etc. but nothing is working.

Slow/crashing Programs, Programs Disappearing From Start Bar

Feb 3, 2013

Every time I start up normally into Win7 everything is fine for a couple of minutes. I'll open a few programs, then after a few minutes of them running they'll hang and enter the 'not responding' mode. (firefox, steam, IE). If I don't already have task manager running the system will basically be unresponsive and the only thing I can do is reboot manually. If I have task manager running I can sometimes end a process or two but some will remain open & unresponsive. Any programs that are working (including task manager) disappear when I minimize them and no programs appear on the task bar, (though they can be retrieved with alt+tab).

McAfee also has 'real time scanning' permanently disabled.

This is all very strange as there was nothing wrong four days ago when I was away, and the symptoms occured within 2-3 minutes of booting up this evening. The system runs in safe mode.

Add Programs To Default Programs List?

Feb 6, 2011

I downloaded Adobe Shockwave Player which is needed to view a file (.swf), and it appears in the control panel as an installed program. However, it does not appear as a default program when I am trying to use the "associate a file type or protocal with a specific program" even when I press the browse list. The program also does not appear when I "right click" the file itself and use the open command. The program also does not appear in the list of programs on the "All Progams: list when clicking the windows icon. So, can someone tell me how to get programs onto the default list....(Please, I have seen a number of threads that talk about how to "set" the default program which I am well aware of...I need to know how to get a program to be recognized and incoroporated as part of the list).

Windows Will Not Run Programs

Feb 2, 2012

My sister did an Ad-Aware scan, and it removed what it found. However, after it was finished she could no longer run any programs and when trying to open IE through her toolbar it gave her a message saying it had been deleted. She managed to get the 64-bit version to work when running from her start menu, and things like Notepad will open. But none of her programs will work, though they worked perfectly fine just last night. WoW, her virus program, anything. We're all extremely frustrated by this, and hope someone can help give us some hints on fixing it. She's hoping she won't have to wipe it clean and reformat.

Windows 7 On SSD And Programs On HDD?

Aug 27, 2012

When I built my machine about a year ago I did so after reading through various photography forums. I was reading about how to build a speedy PC and of course how to have Photoshop work quickly. The general consensus was to build a machine with an SSD and run PS here. So that's what I did - I built a speedy machine, installed Win7 64 on the SSD and installed my programs there as well. PS runs great! Super fast. All data (and scratch disks) are on an HDD.However, in the time since I've built this I've been reading around on PC forums (like here). I believe what I've found in these forums is a consensus of having Win7 on the SSD and install all programs on another drive (HDD). So, let's call this question #1 - would that be the recommendation?I'll go off the assumption that the answer to #1 is YES. That'll give me a more responsive, better performing PC while possibly relinquishing some PS speed, correct? (We'll call that question #2.)If I'm going to go this route, (#3) what's the best/easiest way to accomplish this split? (#4) Do I need to uninstall everything and basically start from bare windows, then reinstall everything to the HDD?

Using Programs In Windows.old

Sep 18, 2009

I recently upgraded from vista, and I was just looking at the windows.old folder, where all my old programs and whatnot reside. I tried a few of them out, and they seem to be functional. Essentially, the heart of my question is are there drawbacks to using programs that are in the program files (or wherever) of windows.old. Particularly in cases where there is an update process (say, like steam) will this present with issues?

SSD For Windows And HDD For Programs?

Nov 18, 2012

I currently have an 80Gb HDD with Windows 7 installed and a 160Gb HDD with the various program files and applications on it. I did this originally as I assumed that the pc can read/write data simultaneously to both drives which should speed up performance when loading programs.. Other data such as videos, pictures etc are stored on a 1Tb HDD. I am thinking of getting a Samsung 64Gb SSD drive. The question is, will it work faster for the Windows and all the program files to be on the SSD drive or just let the operating system run from the SSD and keep the program files on the 160Gb HDD?
