Delete Old Windows Backup Files?

Sep 9, 2011

I had windows 7 keep giving me a blue screen more often than not. I decided to reinstall windows. All went well and I don't get any blue screens. Now most of my 500g drive is 2 files (windows.old and windows.old.000). Now I don't have any room to backup my computer. These 2 files take up about 300g. I went to my local computer store and they this is normal for windows 7 and the files just keep getting bigger as time goes on. They advised me that I should have at least 2T drive to keep running windows 7. So my question is, can I delete the old backup files because I'm only using less than 200g on an ongoing bases. My operating system tells me that I don't have backup setup and I don't have room to set it up. I would have just over 300g free if I could delete these 2 files.

Auto Delete Old Backups

Apr 18, 2011

I currently have a hard drive set as a backup drive but am getting the message that there's no room left on the drive to write the new backups. I have to go in and manually delete the old backups. Is there anyway Windows 7 can automatically do this to so that it can write the new ones? I couldn't find any and after searching Google it doesn't look like it's possible. Is there any way through Task Scheduler maybe?

Backup Files Before Doing Full Restore, But Don't Have The Password For User Account

Jul 28, 2012

I'm trying to backup the pictures, music, and videos that are saved on my buddies laptop. He forgot the password for the main account and whenever I try to transfer files to an external hard drive, a screen pops up and tells me to it cannot transfer files without password. Is there anyway to get around this? EDIT: I thought maybe it would be important to add that the account that I'm using to get access to the files must not have permissions to change anything on the computer. Don't ask me how my friend figured out how to restrict himself from changing anything on the computer, but he did and this general lack of knowledge about computers, likely got in into the trouble, that now is going to require me to do a full restore.

Multiple Backups Using Windows 7 Backup?

Apr 19, 2012

I managed to do a drive image that also included my storage drive on an internal 1TB SATA drive. This, however, was the only one I was able to do. When I tried to run backup a second time, it would start, but then completely hang with only the occasional HD light blink. I stopped the backup, but it never said the back up stopped. I then tried to shut down and it got as far as saying it was shutting down, but never actually did. I had to power down. I tried a second time and the results were the same. Not even an entry in log files.

Incremental Backups With Backup & Restore?

Jul 13, 2012

Is there a canonical way to make incremental backups that permit a full restoration from a freshly-formatted disk?I made a single system image, then set up B&R to backup all the files on all drives weekly. I can see the weekly backup directories, but they seem to be full backups, not incrementals.I was able to restore from the system image, but I didn't see a way to restore the newer files. You can't do it from within Windows, since it complains as soon as you try to overwrite a system fil

Can't Delete Vista Backups After Upgrading

Oct 14, 2009

I upgraded to Windows 7 64-bit from Vista Ultimate 64-bit.

While in Vista, I had automatic backups to an external drive. I cannot delete these old backups manually, and the Backup and Restore module does not recognize them as backups, so it won't manage them.

How can I delete these old backups. When I try to delete them, I get an "Access denied" error. I can't even open the folder with the name of the computer.

Comodo Backup: Can Create Multiple Backups

Apr 10, 2012

Just started setting up my backups with Comodo but suddenly realized that seemingly no name is associated with a backup. In my case I trying to create the following backups:

1. critical files: full/each-Sun
2. critical files: Inc/daily
3. studio files: full/1st-each-month
4. studio files: Inc/each-Sat
5. resource files: full/15-each-month
and so on...

But is it possible to create multiple backups using Comodo?? Or, am I just changing the full and Inc backups over and over again! How, for instance, can I check and/or change my 'critical files' backup?I have almost a T-Byte of data (I do 3D animation) which is why I like to breakup my backups.

Can't Delete System Files On Second Disc

Apr 3, 2011

I had an old P4 system that the PSU went out on, so while I was at the store getting a new PSU, I picked up a copy of Win7 also. Put the PSU and Win7 in and the next day, the Motherboard died. Went and bought a new i-core motherboard, processor, memory and video card and put it together using two drives. The one Sata drive from the old system is a 1T that has the Win7 from the other system on it along with about 75 movies, 500 pictures and 1500 songs. I used a 250 gig SATA to load the Win7 onto the new system. So now the new system is running off the 250gig and all my files are on the 1T drive along with the old Win7 folder. I want to delet the old Win7 folder but it won't let me giving me a message saying I need permission from a trusted installer to remove these files.

Create A System Backup Without Non-essential Files?

Aug 19, 2012

I have a PC organized like this:

C (SSD) "SYSTEM": Contains all system folders EXCEPT *Users* and *ProgramData*

D (HDD) "DATA": Users, ProgramData, and "Media" (Media is in another folder, not under the Users or ProgramData)

Z (HDD): Normally only mounted into c:BackupDrive, this volume is ONLY for backup. I am now realizing that I need to mount it as a separate volume (Z so that Windows Backup will back up to it. Also, it looks like a Windows System Backup will always include it's data in the backup, which is not desired. So I will change this.I am happy using Crashplan to back up my user directories, ProgramData and Media.I would like, however, to create a System backup that will allow me to get back up and running quickly, but it doesn't have to contain all my media and all user files. However, when I create a System Backup, Windows doesn't give me the option to exclude certain files on the D drive, since Users and ProgramData reside there. Next to Users is a Media folder with 100s of GBs of stuff I don't need included in a disaster recovery plan. Can I get Windows System Restore to create a backup without these files? Can I get it to exclude specific folders in my user directories (Music, Pictures, non-essential stuff)?

How To Backup Files From System Encrypted Hard Drive

Jul 16, 2012

I've got a new Dell Latitude which is used for business. I've encrypted the hard drive using Truecrypt. I've encrypted the entire drive, not just made an encrypted container. My question is though, if I use the windows 7 backup and restore feature, and backup the hard drive to a NAS device, in the event of the laptop being stolen, or if I choose to work with files on another computer, will the files which windows 7 backs up work? I work in IT, so have years of experience here, however encryption is something which I am only just learning. If the windows 7 backup and restore feature will not support this, can anyone recommend an alternative? I've looked into Acronis True Image Home 2012, however still need to evaluate this.

Backup & Restore System And Program Files To A New OS Install

Dec 19, 2012

I recently purchased a new Toshiba 1tb HDD. My old WD 1tb HDD has been giving me trouble of late. I occasionally get the BSOD. Also, on occasion, when I reboot the computer it automatically runs the chkdsk program and reports several bad clusters. However the chkdsk program never seems to flag the bad clusters, so periodically, when I reboot, it runs and reports them again.

I would like to image or backup all of the files on my problem HDD, then do a fresh install of Win 7 Ultimate 64bit (my current OS) to the new HDD, then restore the cloned or image system and program files to the new HDD. I don't want to have to go through the process of reinstalling everything again, when everything seems to be working okay. Since the Win 7 image program makes and exact image of the HDD, then to use that program would cause the new install of Win 7 Ultimate 64bit to be overwritten by the image restore. Therefore, if there should be corrupt data under a bad cluster from the old HDD, that data would not be transferred and my existing problem would be transferred to the new HDD.

On the other hand, if I do a disk clone, I am not sure that the existing programs would continue to operate on the new HDD, and would require a fresh install of each program after the fresh install of the Win 7 OS! I would have then wasted my time doing a transfer of program/data files to my newly formatted and freshly installed OS.

Does anyone know of any program (Acronis True Image, Paragon, Norton Ghost, Macrium Reflect, etc.) that will let you image or clone the program and data (incuding the necessary operational files such as: Win32 system files, activation files, etc.) so that they will work correctly on the fresh install of the OS?

Delete Locked System Files From Old Windows Install

Jan 21, 2012

I have recently updated my hdd with a clean windows 7 install, but had the old one on a secondary hard disk as a back up. I now need to delete these files to save space on my data drive, but am unable to delete the system and windows files as they are owned by TrustedInstaller.

I discovered how to take ownership of these directories, but now the UAC is telling me that I need permission from myself to delete the files which I own!

Is there anyway to get round this without shipping out my data and doing a format, which I don't want to do as I always seem to miss something important..
