Xp Home Won't Support Virtual Pc

May 4, 2008

I realize that this is not the proper place for this question but I can't seem to find the right newsgroup. Anyway, I am running the Microsoft Virtual PC program on a Vista home Premium laptop and a XP home desktop. In both of these machines when I attempt to install a virtual OS, I keep getting the message "Reboot and Select proper boot Device or insert Boot Media in selected Boot device". Pressing enter with the OS disc in the drive starts the disc spinning but ends up with this same message. Now, Microsoft says that Vista Home Premium and XP Home won't support Virtual PC but I have read from other sources that it does work with these OS's. Can someone shed some light on this for me?

Cannot Set Virtual Memory Home Premium

Mar 23, 2008

I noticed that my virtual memory is set to no pagefile? I've tried setting it to custom, system managed, etc. I always click the "set" button and it will show what I change it to if I set a custom size. When I reboot and go back to the settings, it is back to No Pagefile?

RAID 0 Setup On X64 Home Premium:computer's Hardware Not Support Booting To This Disk

Mar 26, 2008

I'm attempting to set up a new PC with RAID 0 using Vista x64 Home Edition Premium. However, I'm having no luck. (Hours of scouring various forums have yielded nothing as well.) I've set up 2 RAID 0 partitions across my 2 SATA drives using Intel's Matrix Storage Manager. (CTRL + I thing at boot). When I load up Vista for installation, it recognizes the partitions but refuses to let me install on them. I get an alert at the bottom of the screen saying that my "...computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk's controller is enabled in the computer's BIOS menu."

I'm not completely clear on what this means, but after entering BIOS, I have my drive configuration set to configure SATA as RAID. Attempting to continue the installation yields something like "Windows cannot find a drive that is suitable for installation" (not verbatim, sorry.) I have downloaded all of Intel's drivers for my motherboard and have even hunted down the RAID driver for my HDDs. I put all of those files onto a USB drive, but Vista doesn't seem to recognize any of them.

Virtual PC 2007 Windows ME - Place Virtual Disk

Jul 29, 2009

Am I correct in assuming that, for Windows ME to run in a Virtual PC 2007 window, the Windows ME virtual disk must be located inside a disk partition that is FAT32? On a test run, I tried to install WinME on a virtual disk in a folder that was in my normal Vista partition (NTFS), and it didn't get far. I tried placing the WinME virtual disk inside an FAT32 partition, and although I didn't finish the installation process, I got that far, with the WinME instalation screen having popped up and ready for installation. One other thing: Is it possible to place the WinME virtual disk inside a logical FAT32 partition? Or must it be a primary partition?

Starting The Virtual Machines From The Console Leads To An Immediate Reboot Of My Host Machine (I Can't Even See Any Boot Screen Of The Virtual Machine - It Is Like Clicking Start In The VPC Console -- > Reboot Of Host)

Jul 5, 2008

I have the following issue and hope that somebody can give me a hint about what might be going on! My system has two raid 1 arrays - one is running on XP Professional SP3 the other one is running on Vista x64 Ultimate SP1. When I start my virtual machines (either from the Virtual PC console or when double-clicking the *.vmc files) than everything is working fine on XP and the virtual machines are booting and running as expected. However, on Vista the following is happening (and I hope somebody has an idea):

1. Starting the Virtual machines from the console leads to an immediate reboot of my host machine (I can't even see any boot screen of the virtual machine - it is like clicking start in the VPC console -- > reboot of host).

Now I tried the following:.........

FSX And Low Virtual Memory

Feb 6, 2009

I am running Vista 32bit with 4gigs of ram, AMD Phenom 9950, just put in an ATI 4870X2 with 8.11 drivers. I have two hard drives, one 250gb with the OS and FS9 and FSX on it and another 500gb with really nothing on it. I have my virtual memory set up as follows:

C: and D: drive set to system managed. Should I set the custom size and to what intial and max size?

Im leaning towards the 4870x2 card the cause of the memory leak not sure if it is a driver issue, might install the 5.8 version and see what happens. Also, plan on moving FS9 and FSX to the bigger drive.

Installing Xp Pro Virtual OS

Apr 13, 2008

I recently built a new computer and installed Vista Ultimate. I plan on installing XP Pro as a virtual OS. I'm new to this and was wondering how much HD space to allocate for this install. Do you allow space just for the OS or for added programs as well? Also, if I understand correctly, both OS's actually run at the same time. Does this create a problem with resources, or can you put one OS in down mode while using the other? I have a quad core Q6600 and 4 GB of RAM. Hard drive is WD 500 GB.

Virtual PC 2007 On Ultimate SP1 RTM

Mar 23, 2008

I just installed SP1 from technet recently, and decided to try my hand at virtualization for the first time today. Once Virtual PC 2007 is installed, my system BSoDs during every boot. The only way to gain access to windows is safe mode, or using the last known good state.

After using last known good state, VPC 2007 is installed, but won't work (as the drivers/services have been removed during install). I've uninstalled the remainder of VPC 2007 and rebooted; no problems. Tried again to installed VPC, and after reboot it once again BSoDs endlessly. So it stems the error is recreatable (at least on my machine).

Virtual Memory And 12gb Of RAM

Dec 20, 2008

This is my first post in this forum, but I was just wondering if any of you had experience with virtual memory in Vista x64 and the page file when you have a large amount of RAM. I recently just build a machine which has 12gb of RAM. I am begginning to think that this was a waste of money, because no matter what I do, I cannot seem to get the ram useage to exceed 30 percent, or roughly 4gb of ram. I am a computer science major and completely understand how virtual memory works and what paging is; however, I was always taught that if the OS (Vista in this case) will only swap memory when the memory is full, but this has not been the case as I know that Vista is paging some of the memory onto the disk even though it has another 8gb of free memory to use.

I was just wondering what your thoughts were on disabling paging in Vista and if any of you have experience with doing so when you have a system with a large amount of memory. Also, I would love to hear anybody's explaination as to why Vista is paging the memory onto the HDD when in fact it's not neccessary in my case. Perhaps I do not understand it correctly? I am currently on a different computer, but tommorow I will disable the paging in Vista to see what kind of performance difference I experience, if any and post what I find.

How Remove Virtual Drive?

Apr 26, 2009

I have a Sony Vaio laptop with Vista Home + SP1. It came with just a C drive. I decided to create a second D drive so that the operational side would be on C drive and data would be on D drive. The intention was to create a situation where, if I had to use the recovery disk, it could just replace C drive with the factory settings, while leaving data in place on D. But now I want to remove the separate drive D and restore the space to drive C. I have backed up everything in drive D to external media. However, whatever I do, I cannot find a way to simply dump drive D and have the space reallocated to drive C. THe system will let me create additonal drives, and shrink drives, but not just reallocate them to C drive. Of course, if all else fails, I can restore all my data to drive D, but for reasons associated with the use of an iPod I want the maximum space available in C drive to cope with this. But I can find no way to do this.

3D Cube Virtual Desktop

* Because of the capture software I used, the video is very choppy.  Normally, the cube spins very smoothly.
Download this free desktop manager from Chris' Soft.
Update: Yod'm 3D Desktop was sold to a commercial developer and is now called DeskSpace.  Additionally, DeskSpace is no longer free but you can find a copy of the old freeware version here.
