I have recently purchased a laptop with Vista Home Premium, only to discover that it wouldn't recognize my desktop machine on the network. The desktop is Windows Media Center Edition (XP Pro). I've installed the Topical Link-Layer Discovery update on the XP machine, and about once out of every three visits to the "Network" through Explorer, my desktop will show up, but trying to access it (ever) will give an error that essentially says "Sorry, chump, I asked DNS about that PC, but there's no record of it existing." (Except, with a Brooklyn accent.)
I'm fairly tech-savvy, so I've done my googling. I've tried enabling the sharing options on the Vista machine, setting up accounts with the same user ID & password on both machines - the standard response to this problem. Unfortuneately, none of these things have solved this issue. I've got software (source code - I'm a programmer) and media on my desktop that I really need to get to from my laptop.
How can I get the Vista machine to consistently recognize the network printer at startup like its two XP brothers always do? I can always add the network printer to the Vista machine after startup by going through the "add a printer" dialog. When the machine reboots the "new" printer most often shows up as "offline". I've just replaced the network router with no effect on this (no better, no worse).
i recently bought a pci network card, specifically a a Intel PWLA8391GT 10/ 100/ 1000Mbps PCI PRO/1000 GT Desktop Adapter. after the hardware install, i booted up, and to my dismay, vista doesnt recognize that ive installed a new network card. im using the card to hook up my xbox 360, so that i can access xbox live through the university's network. i have the xbox hooked up to the pci network card via crossover cable, and when i turn the xbox on, i get green leds on the back.
Everything is working fine (so far) except that it does not recognize integrated Ethernet adapter at all. On advise of support guys did driver reinstall several time including while in Safe Mode. Even restored factory settings i.e. reinstalled OS. If I run "pnputil -e" then the adapter package is listed but the adapter just does not show up in Device Manager.
Already verified that it is enabled in BIOS. Netgear USB adapter worked just fine after installing vista driver for it. Thinking of putting in a PCI card but that will occupy one slot. Only 3 PCI slots are available - standard, Express 1 and Express 16.
I am a novice with computers and am having problems setting up a home network. My desktop is running XP and is cabled to a Netgear wireless router. My wireless laptop is running vista. I can access the internet without any problems on my laptop through the router, but can't connect to the desktop. It would come in handy to access files, but the main reason is i want to use the printer that is connected to the desktop. My router does not have a USB, or flash port. During my fumblings I have had the laptop appear on the desktop and vice versa in workgroup computers, but I can,t access the computer once it appears.
I have a Desktop with Xp-home edition sp2, connected by ethernet-cabel to my Linksys Router and I have a Laptop, running Vista, connected wireless. On my Desktop I can find my Vista computer in my network. (Can't get into folders yet, but that is later to be solved). In the networkdisplay on my Vista laptop, I can't find my XP Computer. I did ping my desktop and it worked. SO, I tried to type the ip-adres of my Desktop in Windows-explorer and I could get into all the shared files. I have a connection, but the desktop isn't displayed in my network.
i cant connect to my wireless network from my desktop. my moms laptop will though. i dont know why. i think it might be because i have a virus but i have avast do a full system scan every day.
I've been struggling for a while to be able to share files between my new Vista (x64) desktop and my laptop. When I click "View full map" on the Vista desktop, I do see the laptop (hurrah!) but it refuses to appear in the Network and Sharing Center, or in any of the browsing lists when I try to map a drive to a shared folder. (Right-clicking on the laptop icon in the full map does nothing.)
I have spent the better part of two weekends trying to get my XP w/ Service Pack 2 desktop to network with my Vista Home Premium laptop. Both computers are in the same workgroup (WORKGROUP). I have turned off all firewalls, both software-based and on my router. On the XP computer, I have installed the LLTD protocol. The XP computer shows the Vista computer in the workgroup, but when I try to access it it tells me it is not accessible because I "might not have permission to use this network resource."
In Vista, the XP computer shows up in the Network Map, but when I pass the cursor over it, it stays as an arrow; it does not change to a hand. Furthermore, in the Vista Network window, it shows the router and the Vista computer itself, but not the XP computer. I also cannot access the XP computer directly by typing \ and its name. Each computer is able the ping the other. I am using a Linksys WRT54G-TM router. I am an administrator on both computers.
My XP desktop and my Vista laptop are on the same network. I share and print with my laptop wirelessly with no problem, but I was wondering; when my desktop is turned off, I can't print from my laptop. The printer goes offline. Is there any way that I can print on my laptop without having to turn on my desktop PC too?
One of my friends has a media sharing problem with an XP Home (sp3) MCE 2005, WMP 11 desktop. I've tried to help him by setting up consistent user accounts (passworded) but it doesn't seem to solve the problem. In a nutshell, his network shows his desktop as both a computer and a media device and it seems he has more shares than I think is wise -- he has disks, folders, files, all marked as share with full control permissions to everyone. He also has tried to solve his problem by consolidating media, but put it all in the "all users" tree instead of with a single user. In short, I'm not sure what he has shared and where he has it.
As a result his music and pix seem to share on the network ok, but he gets duplicate entries in wmp and conflicts when trying to stream video on his network. Maybe this last problem is because of multiple shared videos with the same name maybe in multiple locations (or as multiple users)? So here are my two questions. First, is there an easy way I can help him turn off all sharing and start over? And second, does it matter that his desktop shows up as a media device AND as a computer? If so, how can he fix that problem?
Is there any way I can get Vista to not recognize a gigabyte of RAM? I'm having trouble with a game and I hear that to fix it you can't have more than 3 GB of RAM, and I have 2 2GB sticks of RAM and I don't want to run my system on 2GB.
I have Vista Home Premium 32 bit and just installed a new Lexmark x4650 all-in-one. I can print perfectly when it is connected wirelessly (through the printer's internal connection to the network), but it won't recognize there is a scanner on it. If I connect it via USB, it works. I have tried disabling both the firewall (McAfee and Windows) and the wireless router. I can't see to find anyone who can print but not scan over the network.
I have a friend who is having issues with windows vista 64 home edition not recognizing all four cores of processor. Here is what we have done so far: updated bios tried to change cores in system config but only giving two core option and we have four. rma first processor since 3 separate programs(windows, amd overdrive and cpuz) all showed only two cores checked all appropriate options in gigabyte bios. All components are compatible.
I just updated from XP Media Center to Vista Media Center (via Home Premium), so I'm a tad new to the Vista version. ALL I want it for is to play music, I don't want pictures, TV, (I might want movies though), etc. Is there a way to remove menu items I don't want: i.e. Pictures, etc.. Also, what types of rips will MC recognize? mpg, avi, etc. The XP version seemed only to recognize .divx files.
I'm using Vista Ultimate with Fax and Scan. It won't recognize my Canone LIDE 30. All of my other programs that use the scanner do recognize it. I am looking for a sure thing ... a scanner that will work with Ultimate's Fax and Scan. I have heard that MS dropped TWAIN for this product and uses a different methodology.
I did have a network All In One but had nothing with problems using it with Vista. So now I'm thinking I'll just connect a scanner to the computer. I tried other software but I received a message that it couldn't access the modem because it was in use by another program ( not the case ).
I have a brand new HP laptop with running Vista Home Premium. USB devices I regularly use is my digital camera, my iPod, a bluetooth USB stick, my printer and my wireless mobile internet device. Every time I plug one of these in, I have to pray that it will be recognised. If it is a good day, and it is recognized, it does not show up in My Computer or in Windows Explorer and I cannot unplug it safely. With some of the devices, every time I plug it in, I get a pop-up which says it is updating the driver software, but it does not seem to make any difference.
i am running a vista 64 bit sp1 in 4gb 800mhz(2x2gb stick). i have a patriot RAM in 5-5-5 15 timings. it run smoothly and i have no prob. my cousn gave me another RAM. 2gb (2x1gb stick) of Corsair also 800mhz but different timings ( 4-4-4 12). After i plug the Corsair RAM my pc boot w/ no prob. i check it if vista recognize my another 2 gb of RAM for the total of 6gb of my computer RAM. and yes welcome center recognized it.
but after a while. i play some videos and BOOM, blue screen of death appear. i didnt catch the error code. the pc reboot. but when ever i played some video, bluescreen of death appear again. do you think that different timings of RAM affect it. but both RAM have same 800mhz.
How come this happens? I will be using Windows Vista 32bit Home Premium and it simply will not recognize any DVD that I put in the DVD drive. I hit restart and the same thing happens. Then I hit shut down and let it shut down and then restart it with the power button and the DVD-RW drive and any disc in it will be read perfectly. This seems odd and disconcerting.
pc does not recognize my dvd drives,i have windows vista 32 bit,i went into help and support, which advised to go into devise manager and check to see if the dvd drives are listed which they are, then to right click on the dvd drives, properties, and click the troubleshoot tab, then the attached box pops up and i dont know where to go from there,
I purchased this drive and it was working fine until now. When I plug it into the computer it does not recognize the HDD. :sa: The problem started after I reformmatted the CPU. I am running Vista Ultimate 32.
I have a ps3 and I wan't to connect to the internet so I bought a wirelesss router and about 3 ethernet cables (I didn't know it wasn't neccesary)I try calling verizon to help hook up my router but they say some thing was wrong with the router it wasn't lighting up. So I bought a new router and the Ethernet wasn't lighting up eather. My dsl modem isn't lighting up eather so i've proved that my pc isn't recognizing my ethernet connections... My uncle has a ps3 and he has internet so I called him and he couldn't help me because the problem is with the pc. What do I have to do? I'm freaking out i've tryed using my other ethernets and the results are the same as before!
I can't get it to work. I tried running as administrator and no luck. I have a Asus G2 series gaming laptop-OS Vista Home premium 32 bit. The game installed great, but as soon as I click on the shortcut from the desktop it will flicker a black screen and just return me to my desktop. I tried putting my computer in a 800x600 resolustion and still didn't start it.
what is the max amount of RAM that Vista 32 bit will recognize? I ask this because I have 3 gigs of RAM currently on my 32 bit computer and I want to go buy some more. I found a good stick for under 20 dollars that I don't mind spending on. If I make my RAM go from 3 gigs to 4 gigs, will it recognize the extra gig? I heard that it will not recognize 4 gigs but I also heard that it won't recognize anything more than 4 gigs.
this is my very last try to fix this problem! perhaps the solution is very simple, but i have no more ideas to solve it. i just want to use my usb-storages on my system. neither my 2,5''-usbhdd nor my sandisk cruzr usbstick is accesible. vista asks me to provide special drivers from the manufacturer. but there are no special usb-flash-drive-drivers. the mainboard is a asus p5k. the 64bit-system-drivers are installed. the joke: my very old 64mb-flashdrive works fine, as well as my digicam and the memorycard in my handy.
For some reason when i plug in my USB dance pad vista tells me it can't recognize it and it shows up in the device manager as unknown device. This device does not come with drivers and does not need any it works fine when i plug it into a pc running Windows xp but it wont work on my Vista computer also i plugged in other usb devices in the same port and they work fine so i know it's not the port.
Would anybody know why Vista X64 SP1 does not recognize my EVGA 8800 GTX graphics card, I just got my EVGA X58 MB along with an Intel core i7 920 CPU and six gigs of corsair ddr3 dominator ram, I've installed Vista X64 SP1 and everything gets recognized except for the 8800 gtx graphics card. I've tried installing the 64 bit 182.06 nvidia drivers but without vista X64 recognizing the cards in the first place it's pointless, i just keep crashing when i reboot until I go into safe mode and remove the drivers.
