Without SP1 Or SP2 System Locks Up?
Aug 4, 2009
I'd reinstalled Vista Prem Home Basic on a Celeron based machine without SP1 or SP2. And funny enough, the system locks up. This is a fresh install. Although we did install her Verizon AntiVirus suite, could it possiblly prevent the system from working right? Even though we disabled it, for some reason or another when my customer shuts it down it states that it is still running.

When trying to enter sleep mode vista locks the computer and goes to the welcome screen. Event views shows "preparing for Away mode". I have had this problem once before so I restored the computer and it fixed it. But at this point I simply want to know what is causing it to happen. Bios is configured. Hibernation is off. no scheduled tasks. Bios is properly configured.

System is 1 month old.
Gateway FX6800 6Gb Ram, i7 CPU.
System locks up every 3 days +/- or so.
System is now approx. 2 hours since reboot. TM reports.
Physical: 6134
Cached: 4299
Free: 34
Physical Memory Usage show 2.1Gb/35%
Over the course of the 3 days the amount of Physical Memory Used will grow to 5.5Gb+ at which time the system slows down to a crawl and the system needs to be rebooted.
There are 3 users with accounts on the system and all stay logged in 100% of the time. Switching between users as necessary. Early warning of the system needing to be rebooted is the system taking 10+ minutes to switch between users.
If I add up the reported (in TM) Working Set of RAM for all of the running applications it adds up to only a fraction of the amount of physical memory reported as being used.
I at first thought the problem was related to Norton 360. But after uninstalling/reinstalling it several times and eventually leaving it uninstalled the problem is still there.

I have been having this very frustrating problem with Vista 64. The machine seems to be find and I can run anything I want, but then it will just lock up. The screen shows what ever graphics was there but its all scrambled. This can happen at an time after the desktop show, 2 minutes or 2 hours. I can run in safe mode all day and night so I'm thinking graphics or some other driver. I have run tests using Everest Ultimate and everything seems fine, except it will lockup like everything else. I have had this issue since the beginning, when I had 1 video card. I have gotten Crossfire enabled and SP1 installed. I am using the latest Catalyst driver 8.3. One note, when I installed the newest driver, it changed how the screen looks when it locks up, but its still the same issue.

Vista booted to the Desktop OK despite the new MoBo having a totally different chipset etc. However one problem niggles, if a CD/DVD is inserted any attempt at accessing the contents in Explorer locks up the system and I loose the Desktop, even Cntr+Alt+Delete doesn't work. On first boot Vista wanted me to activate due to the new hardware config so I did, with hindsight maybe I would have been better off doing a repair install, as I am now concerned a repair install will require activation this could be a problem with Microsoft maybe?. I have tried uninstalling DVD drive, IDE/SATA controllers and tested the DVD drive in another machine

I have been having major problems with Vista for the past 10 days. It seemed to start after 2 updates on May 13th and I spent several hours on the phone with Microsoft on May 18th and things seemed better - the remaining problem is that the system locks up after a period of inactivity - usually and hour or two. It has also locked with a backup program running and thus fails to complete the backup. Each of the following errors seem to re-appear in the event log each time
the system locks -
Event ID 45 - volmgr ??? the system could not load the crash dump driver
Event ID 7000 ??? Service Control Manager Event Log Provider - The Parallel
port driver service failed to start due to the following error: The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it.
Event ID 6008 - Event Log System - The previous system shutdown at 9:41:14 AM on 5/22/2008 was unexpected. I have to shut down using the power button and restart.

Whenever I put my computer to sleep, it doesn't actually GO to sleep. Rather, it's like if I had just locked it instead. The display stays on and it just goes to the Log In screen for vista. When my computer used to go to sleep, the display would turn off and so would all the LED indicators on my laptop, expect for the power indicator, which would blink on and off. Btw, I'm running a Dell Inspiron 1420 with Windows Vista Basic 32bit.

I made the switch over from XP to Vista 64. What a nightmare with Quickbooks. Quickbooks is not willing to help me unless I pay for their tech support. I can get the program running but am not able to print certain areas and can't email my invoices to my customers. I am really frustrated. QB locks up alot also, "not responding" so I have to close QB and restart.

If I'm in a video demanding environment (counter strike) my mouse hangs, locks or pauses.
If I move my mouse fast it also locks up from time to time. Sometimes it locks up for like 5 seconds or so. When it locks up I can hear the system shut the port on and off because I hear the ding. It also happens frequently when I pick up the mouse to move it.
I have quad 2.4 intel.
4gb ram
Vista ultimate 32 bit
mx510 through USB.
Mouse seems to work on my laptop and other desktop and both are XP. I d/led the newest drivers for the 510 and I have scoured the net for info on my problem.

Vista Home Premium x64 Locks up/Freezes after any wireless connection to the internet is made. The time seemed random at 1st but after some bios/hardware tweaking I can get connected for approx 10 sec before Vista locks up/freezes. It is not like it is becoming "non responsive" - All operations cease - the mouse pointer will not move nor any keyboard command registering (alt+ctrl+del, ctr+shift+backspace, alt+f4, etc.).....nothing. I have to cut the power to restart the computer.
This used to happen while I was playing Assassin's Creed but after adjusting the settings in the bios that has gone to a minimum. I spoke w/ both EVGA and D-Link tech support but they were unable to pinpoint the problem. EVGA suggested that lock ups/freezes are generally caused by the graphics card and/or RAM. I built this rig and all of the most recent drivers/bios versions were used in the installation of the hardware. This is the only thing hindering me from completing my gaming rig. Vista performance rating 5.7 (due to processor - all other ratings at 5.9) Can smoothly run Crysis at 1600x1200, No Anti-A, and all other settings on Very High w/ DX10.

My Dell XPS with Windows Vista constantly locks up. I thought maybe it was McAfee causing the problem so I uninstalled it and installed Norton. The problem is still occuring. I even upgraded the ram from 2 gb to 4. I turned off the Gadgets on the sidebar, run defrag, and reboot. It doesn't seem to matter what I'm doing, whether I'm in Windows Mail, using IE7 or in a program. I've read many posts regarding this but haven't found a resolution to my problem. If anyone has some new advice, I would love to hear it.

I've been having issues with COD4 locking up. It locks up randomly. I've proved it's not an overheating issue by playing Crysis on full graphics in a high resolution for two hours. So it's definitely not a heat issue. Joe has informed me that driver lock ups will be recognized and will keep the OS from kernel panic or hard system locks. My only other guess is SoundMAX (on-board high definition 7.1 sound). It's given me numerous problems in several games. I've killed all background processes. I have not killed PunkBusterA and B because I play professionally on CEVO and CAL. Also, Crysis uses PunkBuster.
Just for grins I checked my CPU/GPU/MOBO temps and they all appear well within operational ranges. I have no add-ins except for my graphics card: EVGA GeForce GTX 280. I'm on the i7 processor with the P6T Deluxe motherboard. I use a SATA Hard Drive (I was thinking about firmware updates, but I doubt it's a hard drive issue since Crysis runs for hours). I'm using a Sony CD/DVD RW ROM. My OS is Vista 64 Ultimate. I'm using a USB mouse/keyboard and DELL Flat Panel (DVI).......

Does anyone have any idea of any fix for this. The systems totally locks up randomly when running a web video and or audio program and it seems to be in Media Player, iTunes and other programs as well. I am running Vista home basic on this machine but it does the same thing on my HP running Vista Ultimate as well. I go back into the error messages in the application, systems, and performance logs and can not find any suggestions on what the problem could possible be. I have looked through Blogs and find that this is happening on a variety of machines and configurations and versions of Vista and the only suggestion was to work in the config.msc utility and try turning off non Microsoft services that you can.

I have a problem opening email attachments. I have tried different attachments with no avail. It used to work and something has now stopped it. I even have problems saving the attachments. I can start the save process, but Window Mail locks up. But strange enough the file is saved to the correct location. If I try to save multiple attachments, only the first file is saved, than its locked up again. On a side note, during one of these crashes a email was corupted, I can no longer read it. I can also not delete it or move it to a new folder.

I have several utility software programs. I am afraid to use any of them. I am using Vista home premium 64 bit. I bought this computer back in april. after I bought it I purchased a new program called Advanced System Optimizer. When I google for information on a quality utility program this program had very high recommendations. I also have Fit-It utilities 7 and an older version of System Mechanic. My computer is running slower now and I know it needs cleaning up. The last time months ago right after I purchase Advance System Optimizer I ran the registry cleaner and it reeked havok on my system. I called the company and they told me their program I purchased was not designed for 64bit systems. Of course they didn't refund my money. Question is: My computer needs cleaning up I can tell it is running slower than it used to. What utility program is out there that will work on my system. My system is Vista Home Premium 64 bit Intel core 2 Duo 2.6 GHZ.

My wife was on the internet and suddenly System Pro popped up and started scanning warning my wife of a virus attack on her computer and wanted her to buy the AV Pgm for $49.95. She just clicked all the exits and got off of the internet and now she is locked out of her computer. We can't get system restore to work, Can't get safe mode to work, She has AVG 8 installed but cannot start it. Tried SFC /scannow but was denied access. Tried putting the Windows XP disk in to do a repair and was unable to get it to start. I think the only thing to do is reformat the HD and start over but her PC ignores the A drive and the dvd drives. I cannot get into it in order to re format it.

I have a problem currently with Windows Vista Ultimate(Integrale), this occurred last Friday evening. I was finishing off a word document when suddenly all went black. As an end user I assumed this was a system crash and so rebooted my system, then ran registry repair, then checked for viruses etc with Live OneCare, eventually reloaded Vista all to no avail. Each time I rebooted I was greeted by a black screen after logging in.
I called my tech support who could not help but I did manage to gain access to the internet and after a short while found an item entitled Black Screen Death. This reported that all my problems where due to Microsoft thinking I had a non genuine copy of Vista it went on to explain how you could circum-navigate the problem (this I did and even though I have to repeat this process each time I log on I can use Windows normally). I purchased my copy of Vista Ulitimate from a large chain store at the not give away price of over 400 Euros and registered the same online on the day of installation and have been running for sometime with other Microsoft products including Live OneCare. Why then am I suddenly crippled for an entire weekend by Microsoft security and how can I rectify the situation perminently

I am trying to get rid of system restore shadow copies on my Vista home premium. I keep getting system error when I try to reduce the room used on my C drive as I only have 28gb of 145gb left. I have tried typing in:vssadmin list shadowstorage For the above command to run you must use elevated privileges:
1.. Click on the Start menu then click All Programs / Accessories
2.. Right Click on the Command Prompt option and from the drop down menu click on the Run as Administrator option
3.. At the command prompt type vssadmin list shadowstorage and Press Enter
(NOTE: if the command does not run change directories to c:windowssystem32) After the vssadmin has executed you will see results similar to the following:.....
The output above shows space used on the C: drive by System Restore is 237.419 MB. The maximum space allocated for System restore is 2.092 GB To view the number of restore points you currently have on your Computer run the following command vssadmin list shadows Next, to reduce the allocated space used by Vista's System Restore, use the following command: vssadmin resize shadowstorage /on=[OnVolumeSpec:] /for=[ForVolumeSpec:] /maxsize=[MaxSizeSpec] Where example: vssadmin resize shadowstorage /On=C: /For=C: /Maxsize=1GB When decreasing the space allocated to System Restore, you will loose the earlier system restore points. The advantage is gaining extra free space. If you are concerned with losing the previous restore points, wait until you do not need them anymore before reducing the allocated space. If you plan on upgrading to Windows Vista or running a clean install and will need extra space, consider reducing the space after installation has completed. It is not recommended to disable System Restore. The capability to restore to a previous point in time or having the new Shadow Copy feature available can be a time saver if something goes wrong or if you delete a file. source: John Barnett Windows Vista Support I keep getting an error message. I seem to remember doing this before with my XP but can't remember how. Is there an easier way?

I have a system that has FAT16 file system on it. I have that file system on that for some reason so I don’t need to upgrade on that….but recently I had some files deleted and now I need to get them back. They are important for my official use and hold great importance. I know that there is software for recovery but since I have a FAT16 file system I guess that all won’t work on that.

I thought I would share this with you all, a few little tricks to boost Windows performance. If you have a spare USB flash drive or you are willing to get a cheap say 1GB flash drive. First we plug in the flash drive. Go to Disk Manager and assign it a drive letter, like Z: (this is just to get it out of the way and optional). Go to Advanced system settings, Evironment variables. Change the Temp variable under User to Z: (I didn't see any point creating folders, but that's optional). Change the Temp variable under System variable to Z:
This will cut down on I/O traffic to the hard drive. Starting an app like Word, would cause the HD to read the program into memory while at the same time writing into the drive, temporary files. This causes an I/O queue to form and degrade Windows performance. By off loading some of the I/O traffic to another storage device, the hard drive read/write head doesn't have to move around as much either. All performance gains.
Another trick I tried was moving Windows Search Index to a flash drive, but it won't let me select even a 16GB flash drive. Even though the Index doesn't grow beyond 1GB. It's max size seems to be just under 1GB. You can move to it to a removable drive, though. I rebuilt the Index on an external 500GB USB drive. Again, this cuts down I/O traffic to the internal hard drive..........
