Way To Clean Backed Up Files?

Sep 1, 2008

Here's a screen. It shows the size of the C:Windowswinsxs folder which is takin up an awful lot of space which I wonder if I can reclaim somehow. The reason for me to post this thread in Windows Updates section is because I know that this is the folder used by Windows Update to back-up files. On my dual boot XP install I have sometimes reclaimed space by deleting a few of the windows Update back-up folders. I wonder If the same can be done for Vista? Now, I know that it's not right to delete such system back-ups but If my system is running fine after a month of installing the update, then I guess, it should be fine to delete them. Also, I wouldn't mind it if it was a few MB but this folder's a whooping 8gigs which I could use in a better way for sure!

Restoring Backed Up Files

Aug 21, 2009

I saved my personal files (documents I created in Microsoft Word) to a DVD-RW. My computer began freezing repeatedly so had to be fixed - thus wiping out my documents. So now I can't find anywhere how I restore them to my computer.

How Can Clean Up Temp Files

Oct 18, 2008

I have Vista Ultimate, when I run disk cleanup, either through cleanmgr or drive properties it gets to temporary files then goes nowhere, after 30 minutes the progress meter has not moved (it is at about 50%) and if I leave it running it just disappears after a while (I have not timed this but it is longer than 30 minutes). I have run a check on my hard drive and it is okay. Is there a fix for this or if not how do I clean up "temp" files.

Backup Files Before Clean/Repair Install

Jul 31, 2009

I'm having issues with various programs on my 32 bit Home Premium Vista OS. It seems like a virus to me. When I try and open EXPLORER the infamous CLASS NOT REGISTERED error shows up. For many other applications I get the "WININET.dll NOT FOUND" error. I have tried REGISTRY MECHANIC and also tried to do a STARTUP REPAIR using the VISTA DVD. The Startup Repair utility does not seem to find any problems when I run it at startup.

I wanted to get opinions if all this was leading to a clean install or a repair install of Vista. I'm not sure if I have SP1 or SP2. I can't seem to get to any program that would give me that info because of aforementioned errors. Also if it is a clean install that I need to do, can I save my documents and music somehow first? Any ideas? Is it possible to use DOS Command Shell and try the COPY command to copy these folders to my portable hard drive, which is L: drive on my computer. I do have a few programs that run without the errors. One is Mozilla Firefox. I can see all my important files by typing "C:" in the Firefox browser (for eg. "//c:/Users/admin/Music"). Any way to copy them to "L:"? Or any way to back them up before OS installation?

Extended Disk Clean Up

Sep 6, 2008

I downloaded the extended disk clean up shortcut, right clicked, ran as administrator, had all checked except for setup log files as strongly suggested, clicked ok, it said it was calculating the space I would regain by cleaning, it went straight to cleaning without showing the amounts in each checked section, and finished. I ran the utility to see about the error bug in reporting the size of the amounts as discribed and wanted to see if I had this bug to worry about. Why didnt the disk cleaning utility show me the amounts found in the locations and ask me if I wanted to go ahead and delete all the files? anyone?

Clean Install Without Dvd Drivw

I tried copying the DVD contents to a secondary partition, but I can't find any .exe files that will run from a dos boot. Is there any way to get Vista install started without a bootable DVD drive? I do have a CD drive on the machine...can I split the DVD into CD's? Anticipating the most likely input...let me say these...

Yes, I have googled my ass off. Yes, I have IDE DVD drives, I have external usb DVD drives. What I DO NOT HAVE is a way to get THIS machine to BOOT from any of them. Buying a new DVD drive won't help me. I can boot from a CD or floppy or hard drive. I want to do a CLEAN build without leftovers from previous OS. Yes, you can order Vista on CD if you want to wait...and they won't even tell you what it costs until you enter personal information...sorry, but that really chaps my...

Norman AV: How Clean Uninstall ?

Oct 2, 2008

I have been using Norman internet security software for just over a year. Last week, I decided to purchase the AVG internet security software (2-year license) at a retail shop to replace Norman, which had just expired in its 1-year license. I tried to uninstall Norman before installing AVG from "Control Panel->Unstall a program" and it stated the status as "Successful". However the Norman sub-folder is still in the "Program File" folder. So I deleted the Norman sub-folder manually.

Now, when I tried to install AVG, it detected that my laptop is still installed with Norman AV and recommended that I uninstall it before proceeding with the installation. I went to check Microsoft Internet Security Center and found that it still states that the alert for Norman malware is still active. How can I do a clean uninstall from Microsoft Security Center before I go ahead with installing the AVG software? I am totally frustrated with this and my laptop is currently not being protected.

Tool To Clean Up MSCONFIG.exe

Sep 22, 2008

I hope this isn't a repeat of an earlier thread. I did a search but couldn't find anything on it. If it's a duplicate, then move/edit as appropriate. Most of us are familiar with programs that install themselves in the MSconfig.exe file to run everytime Windows starts. Most of us go in and uncheck all that crap except for the essential stuff. That's great, but you often end up with an MSconfig looking like this

For those that want to clean up all that unchecked crap, one can either go into the registry and clean manually. But I found this little program which can do it too. It's simple. It's small. And it's free. Pic above says v1.2 but here is the link to the latest version v1.5 MSConfig Cleanup - optimize your Windows startup Great site you have here.
