How Can Clean Up Temp Files
Oct 18, 2008
I have Vista Ultimate, when I run disk cleanup, either through cleanmgr or drive properties it gets to temporary files then goes nowhere, after 30 minutes the progress meter has not moved (it is at about 50%) and if I leave it running it just disappears after a while (I have not timed this but it is longer than 30 minutes). I have run a check on my hard drive and it is okay. Is there a fix for this or if not how do I clean up "temp" files.

I recently deleted some 2,000+ files from my WindowsTemp folder. I remember - back in my Windows 2000 days - I set up a batch file that executed on boot-up from the Start-up folder that deleted such files. What would the equivalent procedure be for Vista Home Premium (64-bit)? Am I able to duplicate that former procedure? Are there other temp files that are created that I should be aware of for deleting purposes?

I scanned my C:/ drive with ZSoft for temp files. It came up with a list in the hundreds with these extensions:
..bak .GID .tmp .chk .htm .js .syd .ico
and two desktop.ini files.
I have everything configured to dump browser temp files upon closing but it looks like there are files for periods of consecutive dates, possibly when those configurations were not yet set for some reason. It amounts to many MBs, so if they are junk I would like to get rid of them all. What policy should I adhere to regarding temp files with these extensions.

I recently created a shortcut called deletetempfiles, which I created in notepad. I also added the shortcut to the start folder. So when I restart the comp, or, start the comp, the temp files will automatically be deleted. Well..... The problem is... It seems it has deleted the picture I had for my User Account???.. So I am trying to add the picture again, but I get the message to say that the file does not exist, and is invalid?? The file is a JPEG. How can I put my picture back?, also the whole temp folder is deleted as well. I cannot do a system restore, as it is disabled.

Today I tried again and Disk Clean up hung again, this time I have 125 Gig temp files.
How can I have 125 gig temp files in two weeks, I do not do a lot of stuff on the Internet, basically I just muck around with Rail and flight Sim programs.

In my normal old XP pro IE, I just click Tools, Internet Options, Settings, View Files To be able to view and copy the temporary internet files, from IE. But with my vista, when i do the same thing, even though I have activated make hidden files visible, the temp inet folder appears empty. I assume they are present, but Just cannot see them. Can someone point me in the right direction to make them available to me... Also if anyone knows of any handy tools for managing the temp files let me know. I copy a ton of stuff frm the temp inet folder and its very cumbersome.

Is there a time range that Disk Cleanup protects the temp files it should remove? After running Disk Cleanup there are still temp files left in C:/windows/temp and in the appdata/local/temp in my users folder. However the files left are recent files, so does Disk Cleanup only remove files which older than a few days old?

My laptop suddenly shut itself down for no reason. When I restarted it, I was given a fresh new desktop with new music folders, documents folder etc.etc. I have since found out I was given a TEMP account - which is weird because I still logged into MY personal profile with no problems (and no warning messages about files being lost when I shut the computer down). Anyway, since I didn't get any message, I worked on my website pages all day and saved the work into a folder on the "new" desktop.
HOWEVER... after restarting the computer the next day and logging into my profile, I was presented with my original desktop - - - BUT NO FOLDER WITH ALL MY WORK! When I searched for the specific files and folder on my computer - I found the files, but I could not open them because "C:UsersTEMP(folder name)" did not exist! Is there a way.. ANY WAY of getting those files back?

When I've downloaded files from the net, I choose a directory to save the file but then get error message saying that I don't have permission to save files in that location and to ask the Administrator for permission. I am the Administrator and I have no other users. All the files downloaded go to the Local temp file since I don't have permission.

Vista Home Premium upgraded to SP2 Danish. When I do a Disk Cleanup then it should empty all temp files on the hdd, but I found out that its not emptying the following, why is that? c:BrugereThunderAppDataLocalTemp c:windowsTemp Eventhough you are logged in as administrator c:BrugereAdministratorAppDataLocalTemp Now the question is if I can delete these files without trouble? Or is there a reason why these files are not deleted and should not be deleted? As the subjet line says, I'm wondering why my windows folder takes up 16.3GB? I'm thinking that its all the old updates that takes up all this space since it seems to be mostly located in these 2 folders :windowswinsxs - 10.8GB c:windowssystem32 - 3.82GB What can be done about this?

Here's a screen. It shows the size of the C:Windowswinsxs folder which is takin up an awful lot of space which I wonder if I can reclaim somehow. The reason for me to post this thread in Windows Updates section is because I know that this is the folder used by Windows Update to back-up files. On my dual boot XP install I have sometimes reclaimed space by deleting a few of the windows Update back-up folders. I wonder If the same can be done for Vista? Now, I know that it's not right to delete such system back-ups but If my system is running fine after a month of installing the update, then I guess, it should be fine to delete them. Also, I wouldn't mind it if it was a few MB but this folder's a whooping 8gigs which I could use in a better way for sure!

I'm having issues with various programs on my 32 bit Home Premium Vista OS. It seems like a virus to me. When I try and open EXPLORER the infamous CLASS NOT REGISTERED error shows up. For many other applications I get the "WININET.dll NOT FOUND" error. I have tried REGISTRY MECHANIC and also tried to do a STARTUP REPAIR using the VISTA DVD. The Startup Repair utility does not seem to find any problems when I run it at startup.
I wanted to get opinions if all this was leading to a clean install or a repair install of Vista. I'm not sure if I have SP1 or SP2. I can't seem to get to any program that would give me that info because of aforementioned errors. Also if it is a clean install that I need to do, can I save my documents and music somehow first? Any ideas? Is it possible to use DOS Command Shell and try the COPY command to copy these folders to my portable hard drive, which is L: drive on my computer. I do have a few programs that run without the errors. One is Mozilla Firefox. I can see all my important files by typing "C:" in the Firefox browser (for eg. "//c:/Users/admin/Music"). Any way to copy them to "L:"? Or any way to back them up before OS installation?

-> I started Deleting Files and cleaning space, yet my drive shows I'm -> losing space?? What is going on? Are you cleaning your temporary internet files, cookies and browser cache when you do you hard drive cleanup? You also might want to check and make sure that you uninstall software that you are sure you are no longer using.

my gfx card temps are a little worrying. Playing a company of heroes 40 minute long game with 8 players on a large map, my temps go up to about 80c. But it always idles around 70c even when ive just turned my pc on. even the gt200 cards get a lower idle reading than this, and mines only an 8800gts 512card. I dont think its a stuck sensor either, because if i open up my pc, i cant even touch the heatsink because its so hot.
