Wake Up Computer Without Turning Off
Mar 23, 2008How do I wake up my computer without turning it off and on. Pushing the power button on my desktop or clicking ht mouse does not work. I have a Gateway GT5657E with Vista.

Will Not Wake Up The Computer
Apr 4, 2009I have upgraded my box, MB CPU and memory (have done this many times without a hitch), have been running Vista 64 bit very well. What is happening at first I thought was it was awakning from sleep on it's own, BUT what is happening is every 5 to 10 minutes, the processor comes on and does disk activity for around 2 minutes then goes back to sleep. During this the monitor is dark, and by doing my regular wake up routine, hit space bar or move the mouse, these movements do nothing and will not wake up the computer. Then, when it's finished whatever it's doing, and goes back to sleep, I can wake it normally. I've run all kinds of scans for virus and malware (OneCare Live and also PREVX Edge with both have been vey efficient in catching the baddies). I can't find any task that says it lets this happen, and don't know of anyway to log something to tell me what is happening.

Feb 15, 2009I was sitting there and my computer just shut off randomly. I got a message saying something like windows needs to be repaired or something so I clicked the button to repair it. I go downstairs and watch a movie, and then I come back up and I see a black screen with the mouse pointer doing the loading animation. So I leave it for about 2 more hours and still nothing happens, I turn it off manually.
Now I have to create a new user account, but I cant because it shuts off after about 1 or 2 minutes of running. I finally got that done and when I click on my user account to start up it shuts off after about 30 seconds on the desktop. The only way it will run is if it is in safe mode. I am even on it now writing this message. It runs great in safe mode... what do I do? I don't have a Vista disk anymore...

Oct 20, 2009Got this update bug, always updating, then turning off, then configuring, then "reverting changes" and this is an infinite loop. Any tips?

Apr 16, 2009Recently, while taking my Vista x64 Ultimate computer out of sleep mode, a power outage occurred. When I turned my computer back on, no 32 bit applications run - not even the operating system's own services such as Windows Installer will run if they are 32-bit.
I tried typing 'firefox' in the Task Manager to see what happened. The process appeared for a moment, then was instantly killed. I don't know why. The Windows event log has been unhelpful in diagnosing the problem.
I also looked at Task manager at startup, and saw that all the * 32 processes were dying moments after Vista boots and show the desktop.
I have tried system restore, nothing worked. I tried to auto-repair my system in the windows recovery console, that didn't work either. Is there anything I can do to fix this problem short of simply reinstalling the OS, which I am reticent to do? If so, what should I do?
NIC-Wake Up
Mar 10, 2009I installed an additional 4 GB of RAM... well... pulled 4GB of PC6400 and installed 8 GB of PC8500... NO BIOS or OS changes... No new software... same chipset drivers, and so on... the ONLY problem I have is NOW... when my system wakes from sleep, the network adapter is "disconnected" and has to be reset before my internet service is restored... May 31, 2008I can not stand 8800GT's 100% fan noice , so I order AC S1 (Rev2) heatsink to replace old one, replcace is good, the noice is down, and also control the temp to 43 degree, then the story comes: I find VISTA Home P 64 SP1 Can Sleep , but when I try to wake up , the PC , CPU(Fan), Hardisk , VedioCard fan start working , but the LCD have no signal, and Wireless Keybord and mouse does not work . I reinstall chip (MB)drivers and vedio card drivers ...still same problem. I change DELL 2407 to Philips 190P stll no siginal...
I change BIOS From S3 to S1 , yes, it can wake up, but I need S3 !!! Wake Up After 30 Seconds
Mar 29, 2008I'm using a home premium on a lenovo 3000 k series 100 with a intel 2 Quad CPU. And recently, when I set it to sleep, or it goes in sleep it self, it will wake up like 30 seconds right after the sleep, even at the night! I'm so frustrated with it.

Apr 7, 2007when I have Vista go into "Sleep" I am un-able to wake it back up. I have tried everything from moving the mouse to hitting just about every button. In the end I simply have to restart the computer. Right now I use my laptop a lot and sleep comes in handy for me. I have a 1.7 CPU, 2 GB RAM on the 32-Bit OS.
My second problem deals with the row of HP QuickPlay buttons that came stock with my dv2000 series HP Laptop. The buttons themselves work but I no longer get any kind of notification of the action. For instance when I hit the mute button it no longer turns red. I have tried updating the driver and that did not work. Any thoughts? One last thing. In my opinion the Vista "sound", "battery" and "Wireless Network" buttons on the task bar look like shit. Does any one know how to replace them?
Hibernation Wake Up On Its Own
Jun 14, 2009Ever since getting the Hibernation feature functioning on my machine about a month ago I've noticed a very peculiar problem with the machine waking up on its own, usually when I'm not around, and I need to know how to stop it. It usually happens after the PC has been powered down for several hours. Today I had put it into Hibernation and then went out, and several hours later when I got home the thing was on, apparently having turned on by itself.

Apr 18, 2009Running Vista 32 Bit Home Prem on Desktop and Laptop. My Home Network has Wireless Router...Desktop is hard wired to Router, Laptop is wireless. Recently configured Network to let me share Printer connected to Desktop via USB connection. The Desktop is set to sleep after 60 mins. What I didn't realize is when Desktop goes to Sleep the Network doesn't see it, and, trying to print from the Laptop to the shared printer will not work. Is there away given the configuration of my Home Network that I can Wake the Desktop from my Laptop when I want to Print from the Laptop when the Desktop has gone to Sleep? I realize I could just not let the Desktop to go into Sleep....but that defeats the Power saving feature which is important to me.

System Sleeps Will Not Wake Up.
Mar 23, 2008Anyone want a used copy of Windows Vista Ultimate? I am about ready to put this one up on eBay since Microsoft has decided not to support it as well as XP. I leave the system on overnight doing defrag. In the morning I find the screen blank and the system is unresponsive to any mouse or keyboard activity including the three finger salute. The screen saver and power saver features are turned off.

Jun 29, 2008I have a ACER Aspire desktop. I bought it in Jan and sometime in April, it began hanging coming out of sleep. I read that MS had released a hotfix to solve this issue. Since SP1 is supposed to contain all the hotfixes, I did a full system restore updated all drivers and MS updates using windows update then windows update showed me the SP1 update and I updated my vista home premium to SP1.
The system still hangs while coming out of sleep. Sometimes it hangs after 30 minutes and sometimes 12 hours, it is very intermittent. Acer says it is a MS issue and MS has not been able to pinpoint what is causing the issue. They have me disable various things and sleep and wake up the PC after 3 mins. How does that help? It has hung even when only Kaspersky Int Sec and Vista sidebar were the only two startup items running.
Turning Off Warnings
Jun 30, 2008I want to run programs, delete desktop shortcuts, move things in and out of the programs file folder, read compiled HTML help files and lots of other things all without having to deal with warning boxes at every turn. And even if I do deal with them and change settings, like taking the check out of "Always do this for the type of file" or unblocked compiled HTML files, Vista just undoes everything. I just reformatted my entire machine thinking there was something wrong because of all the program compiled help files I couldn't open. I tried Tweak UAC, but it only handles a small amount of this stuff.
I need to stop all this stuff. I'm open to anything - deleting system files, dlls, registry tweaks, anything.
DEP Turning Off For A Particular Program
Aug 29, 2009This is my first post in this forum. I use Vista Home premium. my DEP setting is Turn on for all programs except those I select. My querry is-Whenever I go to the folder of a program in "Program Files" folder, I notice that it has numerous folders, and each of these folders have numerous .exe files. Moreover, it is not possible to "Batch Select" all the .exe files in a folder, the procedure has to be repeated for each .exe file individually. This is cumbersome. Is there a better
way of doing it?
Firewall Keeps Turning Off

Feb 24, 2009So, I have the X-Fi XtremeGamer sound card, and I've never had any problems with my sound. Nothing has ever acted up or anything. I've recently tore my system down, and put it back together. and now for some reason my sound is acting up. It still works, but not all the time. Also my Internet is acting up the same way also. so, everything was all good. and after rebuild Now when I put the system to sleep, when I wake it up I get a Windows message saying something about Windows something didn't respond. and my volume symbol in system tray is X'd Out. I have no sound. but if I wait about 20-30 seconds it just turns on all of a sudden, like the X-Fi is waking up slower than the computer is. But this has never happened in the past. So it works, but it's delayed. Same thing with my Internet, it's never had a problem. but now when I wake system up from sleep mode, the net doesn't work. and I hoped it would turn on like the sound does, but it doesn't. So I have to either Restart PC, or I can unplug, and replug in the Ethernet cable. then it works fine. I'm not sure why both of these items are acting up, but they have never done this is the past. Does anyone know why either of these things would be happening?

I do have McAfee on it that also keeps saying that there is an error with security and that it has stopped running. It does this everytime I turn it on and go online. I do have an additional anti-virus program called Threatfire which is another free downloadable program that was suggested by a couple of local computer techs. Whenever I run a virus scan everything comes up clean with the exception of Threatfire alerting me several times of potential malware that I've quarantined. I noticed on a previous question that a anti-virus program called "AVG" is mentioned and another download through Kaspersky.com. Has anyone else even heard of ThreatFire and is it comparable to these other free antivirus programs?

Mar 29, 2008My Logitech Optical Laser USB Mouse has just recently begun turning on and off whenever it feels like it. I have used the mouse for years and all seemed good. I got a new laptop 5 months ago with Vista Ultimate 32 bit and the mouse worked fine, but a few days ago my laptop froze up and I was forced to hold down the power button to restart it. When it rebooted the mouse will work for a while then turn off for 3-5 seconds and then work again. Does this a few times every minute. I have also gone into "Security Center" and tried to turn it on, but it says error:1058 and won't let me. I've even gone onto windows.com to scan computer for updates, but won't allow me to without having automatic updates on. And then it gives steps of how to do so. clicking on START and clicking RUN typing in services.msc to change all 3 things of what it says to to get automatic updates to turn on. Jun 8, 2008I am having trouble to access files from vista to xp(NTFS). There is no problem for XP to get in vista but not vice versa. I can see the name of xp computer from vista network but just could not get in. When I click the XP for access, no error messages but just stuck there forever and I could not kill it after ~20 minutes even with "task manager" so that I had to reboot the computer. Both computers connect same private network wirelessly. I made both computer workgroup name same, off firewalls, and filesharing configuration according to MS manual for each computers as follows; xp file sharing: check "share this folder on the network"check "allow network users to change my files vista network and sharing center:On: "network discovery", "file sharing", "public folder sharing", "printer sharing". Off: "password protected sharing", "Media sharing". Share folder : check "share this folder" and add "everyone" for "permission".
Perhaps, I need to do more adjustment for my xp beyond turning off firewall and file sharing configuration as above but don't know what. I am working on this for 2 days and nights without success. I've even tried to connect by cross cable but it did not work either.
