Vista Stopped Recognising Dvdrw Drive

May 6, 2008

Vista stopped recognising my DVDRW some time ago. I think it was after installing sp1. This is a known issue, dealt with under but after having tried the fix and having already restored recognition of my DVDRW drive I now find that I am back to square one. Vista won't recognise my DVDRW drive again. This time I can't use the fix - which involves deleting lines from a registry subkey - as they are already removed. I would be very grateful for any advice or ideas on how I can tackle this.

CD Drive: Not Recognising Some CDs

Nov 18, 2008

I'm going to try and make myself as clear as possible. I have a HP laptop, which I bought a few months ago and when I first tried a CD that was burnt, a message came up that wrote: "Please insert a disc in drive E" and there was a disk in drive E. I brushed it off however because the next CD, which was an original, worked. Yesterday, I tried putting in The Sims 2 but again that message popped up and this CD was an original also. I've tried everything to try and solve this problem but nothing seems to work.

Having Two Copies Of Vista On One Computer: Install Vista On The Smaller Drive, Boot With That, And Access Files On The Other Drive

Dec 25, 2008

Right now I have a single 640 gig HDD that everything's on. I've got a laptop too that I'm gonna be taking out on rotations eventually. I wanted to get a new smaller (250GB) HDD and put my Vista on that, so my 640 will be data only (then I could take it with me in an external enclosure and leave the desktop for my mom to use til I come back and collect it). I was gonna DBAN the 640, but I wanted to get the data off of it first- about 170 GB of stuff that I'd rather not lose.

My question is-

Can I install Vista on the smaller drive, boot with that, and access files on the other drive? Would it work if there's another Vista running on the other drive? (both SATA).

Not Recognising Pre-recorded Or Formatted Discs

Mar 23, 2008

Recently this unit is not recognising pre-recorded or formatted discs which it previously had recognised. I have a HP laptrop and the drive is a matshita DVD-RAM UJ-850S ATA. I have tried deleting and reinstalling the driver with no success. In one of the forums it is suggested that the 'UpperFilters" and "LowerFilters" in the HKEY registry be deleted but I am not sure about doing this without someone in the know gives it their OK.

Not Recognising Hard Disk 7 Install

Jan 5, 2010

Am reinstalling Windows Vista after a virus infected my PC. I am reinstalling vista but after booting from DVD Vista does not recognise my SATA hard disk on the "Where do you want to install Windows?" screen. There are no issues with the hard disk and this happened once before but I can't remember how I solved this.  My problem is the Vista installer not recognising my hard disk so I can install Vista. I have an Alienware pc with hitachi deskstar hard disk and asus a8n-sli deluxe motherboard. I have to reinstall as a virus has caused my windows explorer to malfunction and it also installed a trojan which stole my key. I have tried a couple of ASUS raid drivers via a usb hard disk with no luck. We can't find any appropriate hitachi drivers. I think this is related to the hard disk controller?

DVD Drive Stopped Working: Nothing In The Drive

Oct 14, 2008

I have the Samsung SH-S223F as my DVD drive, recently it has stopped reading discs, so i can no longer watch DVDs, or get pictures from any of my CDs, its as if there is nothing in the drive. I dont get any error messages except one time it said something about a soundcard driver fault but i didnt read the whole message as it dissapeared, shutting down WMP with it. I do have a soundcard installed (Genius Soundmaker Value 5.1, which i took from my old XP build) but have now reverted to using the onboard sound. Ill remove the soundcard this afternoon to see if that makes a difference.

Recognising HDDs: Copy Of Literally Every Piece Of Data

Jul 1, 2009

I've just received a new computer from Dell. In it, is 1 1Tb HDD. My old Dell had 2 500Gb HDDs, which were mirrored across a RAID array. The idea being is that I had a copy of literally every piece of data I owned, so should something go wrong on one HDD, I wouldn't lose everything. In a bid not to lose everything, I rescued one of the 500Gb HDDs from my departing Dell PC (I got given a free upgrade due to ongoing technical issues involving my original computer) and have stuck it in my new PC.

It's connected via SATA cables, and has a power supply in to it as well, only windows doesn't seem to recognise this new drive. It's quite literally invisible. As one can imagine, this makes retreiving any data one may wish to recover exponentially more difficult. My old HDD was being run on a 32-bit Vista system, whereas my new system is 64-bit Vista.

Vista Recovery 80% Stopped

Apr 4, 2010

I have a Sony Vaio VGN FZ11Z with Vista home premium. I seemed to have picked up a virus which stopped me from booting into normal mode and in Safe Mode there was constant access to the hard disk, no response from the mouse or keyboard and then it just rebooted. Start up repair couldn't find anything wrong. After trying to find a solution I decided to backup my data via the recovery DVD and do a complete system recovery. On the second part of the process where it is installing vista, after a restart I received a black screen titled "Windows Boot Manager" telling me a critical driver was missing or corrupt. I couldn't find any answers to this anywhere, so after trying Statup Repair again (which never finishes) I decided to wipe the disk before staring a sytem recovery again. This froze for a couple of hours on 80% so I stopped it. Now I have " The volume does not contain a recognized file system" when in the recovery console. I did a diagnostic on the hardware at the start of all this and no problems were reported. I have all my data, I have all the recovery disks, all I want to do is have a fresh start!!!!

Vista Installation Began Booting Then Stopped

Oct 20, 2009

I have a Dell windows vista 32bit business ed laptop. the other morning, when I switched it on I noticed it began booting then stopped, looking at the plug I noticed it wasn't in all the way so I slammed it back in with my foot and continued to re-boot the laptop. It booted requesting to do a chkdsk scan, fair enough I thought, I let it continue and it crashed on repairing an index.

It rebooted a second time with an option to load a 'repair' option, loaded this and one of the options in the list were to 'repair the boot files'. jolly good.... 13 hours later, it was still proceeding, but the HD light was at a constant on-off slow flicker, which it had been for the past 12 hours. Resorting to the last option, I entered the vista disk and decided to try a repair from there, same issue as before, so Now i decided to format the drive and start again. The vista boot disk just said it couldn't format the drive, so i decided to install windows over the top!. It said it couldn't do that either! What options do I have now? The laptop is absolutely useless, does it sound like a FUBAR'd hard drive? if it does, I think a swift call to dell is in order, or can anyone think of any fixes?

Upgrade Vista Reinstallation Of Xp Stopped Working

Dec 27, 2008

im new here so dont be harsh but last night i decided to format my pc, so i formated it and tried to reinstall vista, the reinstallation worked fine but then it said i had to have a old version of windows for me to activate, because its an upgrade version. i then formated AGAIN and tried to clean-install XP so i could then upgrade to my vista but during my reinstallation of xp it stopped working. this is where it may get confusing haha, after the first part of the xp install it restarts (the first part meaning where it formats and copys all the files to memory) but just after it restarts it comes up with the screen "press any key to boot to CD........" i let it go because ur not ment to boot to cd after that, but on that same screen it comes up with a few different coloured boxes on the screen and it just hangs and thats where im absulutly stumped

NVidia Control Panel Stopped Working In Vista 64

Jun 16, 2009

I have a dual boot system with Win XP on one partition and Vista 64 Ultimate on the second partition. Sometime recently, perhaps at the latest Windows Update on Vista, my nVidia Control Panel stopped working in Vista 64. I am using nVidia driver 185.85, the latest non-beta version available. I am using nVidia system tools 6.05, the latest set available. I have cleaned out my drivers with Driver Sweeper, and reloaded them with no change. I have loaded the drivers with all virus software shut down, with all unnecessary apps shut down. When I try to start up the nVidia control panel, whether in the Windows Control Panel or other shortcut, Vista tells me that "nVidia Control Panel has stopped working". I am getting the impression that the nVidia drivers are not running, since when I add them they are not defaulting to max resolution like they normally do. The system seems to be running on some default video driver instead. CPU, GPU, MCP temperatures are nominal, no indications of problems there.......

Created Another Partition On My Drive For Vista X64. (two Other Partitions Running Vista X86)

Mar 14, 2008

I'm new to Vista x64 (the op sys as well as this site). I have just endeavored to try out Vista 64 bit on one of my workstations. I run VMWare Workstation at work and can use the additional memory addressing of Vista 64 (I have 4 gigs of RAM). nyway, my problem is this.

1) I created another partition on my drive for Vista x64. (two other partitions running Vista x86).
2) I have been running dual boot with Vista for quite a while and it runs fine.
3) After creating the new partition and installing Vista x64 with SP1 (integrated service pack on install DVD), I get drive corruption problems all over the place.

I have 3 500 gigabyte Western Digital drives in this machine. The first is for operating system partitions and the second strictly for backup (using Acronis True Image) and the third for data. The data drive seems to have problems reading when I attempt to install additional drivers for the x64 bit environment (just downloaded from the web). Also, I soon will get errors afterwards on the C drive also.

Xbox360 Stopped Connecting To Hp Laptop (vista Home Premium 32bit)

Apr 8, 2009

I don't know why but for some reason within the last week or so my xbox360 has stopped connecting to my hp laptop (vista home premium 32bit). I have a 2wire 1800hg gateway, with both the laptop and xbox connected wirelessly (using Intel link 5100/official microsoft wireless connector respectively).

As I say before a few days ago I could access my shared media via my xbox dashboard, as well as via the media center extender. However now it's not working. The 2wire has it's own firewall but I have opened the laptops connections up completely today (although this wasn't an issue a week or two ago?). And I've opened up many ports in windows firewall too.

When I look at the full map in the network and sharing connections window it does indeed show the xbox and laptop connecting to the router, so it is seeing it. However no connection can be made in either direction (i.e. the xbox cannot find any pc's and the pc's media center can't find the mc extender). I've tried numerous things so far, opening ports etc.. but nothing has worked, so this is my last resort!

How To Hide Drive In Vista And Still Be Able To Use It.

There is no TweakUI for Vista and I've tried to hide a drive with registry

and via command prompt (using diskpart). The problem is that both ways leave
hidden drives that are not usable. It's as if they truely do not exist.

Set Up Vista On A SATA Drive?

Mar 23, 2008

Decided I needed a new PC, so bought and assembled all new components and started to install Vista Business. The HDD is a 500GB SATA drive, the DVD/RW is SATA. 8 GB RAM, but took that down to 4 GB since it isn't Vista 64bit edition..

Anyway, Vista started to install but got a BSOD within a minute. Checked all hardware settings and tried again, and again. Every time it gets a different STOP error. So used an XP CD to format the drive figuring that was the problem. It finished formatting then said it couldn't copy a file kodak??.??? Tried Vista again - BSOD.

Tried booting to the motherboard driver CD to find SATA drives but my only options on boot up was to set up a RAID array. I'm happy with just a normal non-RAID setup. There is no floppy drive. The Maxtor CD would not boot at all. So, how do you set up Vista on a new SATA drive? Is there a set of steps to take that isn't listed in the drive or motherboard installation booklets?

Vista Can Not See Hard Drive

I stopped the install and tried loading some drivers off of the disk from Gigabyte. Vista still can not see the hard drive, but now when I throw the XP install disk back in, it can not see the hard drive either.

Seagate IDE To USB Drive In Windows Vista

i am trying to connect two old seagate ide 80 gb hard drives ( barracuda 7200.7 and ST380020A ) to my dell inspiron 1300 laptop with windows vista home premium. i am using an ide to usb cable. first thing that happens when i connect either is that 'safely remove hardware' icon pops up in the system tray and then disappears after a few seconds. i managed to double-click it a few times before it disappears and go into the properties of the 'USB Mass Storage device' and at first it says this device is working properly, then the mouse pointer turns into an hour sign and the following msg replaces that : Currently, this hardware device is not connected to the computer. (Code 45) To fix this problem, reconnect this hardware device to the computer. Click 'Check for solutions' to send data about this device to Microsoft and to see if there is a solution available.

it then disappears also from the Safely Remove Hardware popup box all together. the drives do not appear in my computer, device manager or computer management. i have rebooted many times, tried all the different jumper settings, and even deleted the INFCACHE1.inf file as mentioned in one of the newsgroups fixes i found after hours of googling. still i cannot seem to access the drives at all.

Should I Partition? (new To Vista With New 750 Gig Hard Drive)

Mar 21, 2009

I am getting a new HP today with a 750gig hard drive. Vista Home Premium. 64 bit SP1. I've never used Vista. I seem to recall hearing in the past that partitioning a drive so large is better than having it be just one 750 gig unit. If so, I want to partition it optimally from the outset. So:

1) SHOULD I partition my 750 gig C drive?
2) If so, how is it done? Do I go to Computer > Manage > Disk Management like in XP? (I've never used Vista.)

If I should do it, will I need to reformat to NTFS or will it already be NTFS? And should I use the "Quick format" option or the slow version? (Never did know the difference when I reformatted external drives, but I used the fast version.)

On my external drives I erased everything and then reformatted. Obviously I won't want to do that here, as it comes loaded with the operating system and MS Works, etc. So how do I partition without erasing files?

Dual Boot Of Vista X64 And X86 On Same Drive

Mar 8, 2009

I've configured my system to dual boot into Vista64 (OEM) and Vista86 (retail) on the same drive - 2 separate partitions in a raid 0 configuration.

Vista64 partition: is used exclusively for music recording with 64 bit software only - yes they do exist, I use Sonar.

Vista 86 partition: is for general computer use: Internet, email and such.

I understand that vista64 runs both 64 and 32 bit applications well enuf, I simply want to keep both uses apart from one another - thus my reason for a dual boot.

... so here's my question :^) Has anyone done this before, on a raid 0 using two instances of Vista? If so, could you tell me how well it's worked for you?

...also, concerning the "pagefile.sys". Since I have both vista's on the same drive in separate partitions and vista doesn't like running two pagefiles on the same drive. Should I move one to a second drive? If so, which should I move the x64 or the x86. Maybe both, eh?
