Use System Restore To Restore Back To Certain Restore Points?

May 26, 2008

Why can't I use system restore to restore back to certain restore points? I was only successful twice with it. When my laptap was new and when I used it after re-formatting my hard drive. On all occassions after those two instances I can never restore back to any restore point. It always says that "unspecified error" line. If Microsoft doesn't know what happend, how could I. Why did they bother putting system restore if it doesn't work all the time anyway. It gives you a false sense of security.

Removing Old System Partition

Jun 2, 2009

I had to replace my system drive with a newer one because it was first gen SATA and didn't boot every time. Stupidly, I did it in a brutal manner and now I have the current system on C: and an older installation on D: The bizarre thing is that according to Disk Manager, the partition on D is labelled as "System, Active, Primary Partition", while C: is "Boot, Page File, Active, Crash Dump, Primary Partition". This means I am worried about simply using Linux to reformat the D drive in case it kills the working partition on C:. C works perfectly well and there's been no activity on D: since November last year when in a panic I reinstalled Vista onto C:. Is there anything I can do to remove D, reformat the drive and reuse it for something else *without* also destroying my C: partition?

I deleted the 32bit from the OS boot menu in system configuration but it won't let me delete or format the partition where the 32bit install was when I am in Vista. I deleted it using the DVD to boot into the partition area but after I did that my PC wouldn't boot or anything. I got it repaired but I am now back at where I started. Does anyone have any ideas about how to delete the old installation (entire partition) without screwing up the boot?

Removing VIsta And Installing XP

Mar 15, 2010

I have a brand new genuine XP kit to replace windows vista, so we can run the software/hardware I need at work. Before the installation even begins, while the XP CD is still loading files, I get a bluescreen telling me windows has encountered a problem, and was forced to shut down to protect the system. Basically something in Vista wont let the XP CD even begin installation. I don't know what to do, I've been trying to re-format the hard-drive, IE blow away everything vista related, so it can't fight the XP installation. But some of the sys32 files can't even be removed. I've been doing a lot of research, and I've read some mixed opinions on the subject. Some folks say you can't replace Vista w/ XP, some say it needs to be dual boot, I've also been reading about slip discs and SATA drivers, I'm really not sure how these are supposed to work. But I've made a SLip Disc and copied all the XP v3 files I could. Still, I keep comming back to the problem of the XP CD not even begging installation.

I'll upload a picture of the bluescreen when I bring my camera to work tomorrow. I guess what I really needs is an in-depth explanation of some of these tricks I've been reading about. Right now I'm working with vistabootpro, I just set the Vista OS to legacy, I don't know if that will help at all! Also, for some reason I have a 1TB harddrive, yet I can only partition it into a 100GB and 900GB volume, so the dual boot isn't really feasible anyway. So, I'm open to all suggestions! I really need help, I'm the one who ordered this computer. Not realising that NEITHER my software or hardware is supported by Vista or windows 7. XP is the only OS that will do the job. Now, I'm pretty decent with computers, so don't ve afraid to lay it on thick. WHat it comes down to getting as many suggestions and possiblties to throw at this problem. I'll be back tomorrow with a pic of the error screen prior to XP installation. If I've omitted important information, please don't be afraid to question me, all I know is I've got to solve this problem and get XP running. There is nothing I need to save on this computer. Since I have V3 of XP I think I have the important drivers as well, essentially nothing is too risky to try, as long as I end up with XP. sorry about the long-winded rant. I'm very frustrated and worked up about this, kicking myself for not doing my homework.

For example, when I trace the IP address shown in my posts, it shows the location of my ISP, which is miles away from me. System Restore Not Working: Unable To Make A Restore Point

Apr 11, 2008

I have a recent problem installing Windows updates on Vista Ultimate as the update process stays on 'creating restore point' forever. I've let it run as long as 7 hours in this state, with no change. It looks like the system is unable to make a restore point sucessfully. I know it has worked in the past, as I'm fairly up-to-date on Windows updates. Reading some other threads, I've tried using Disk Clean-up to remove all by the most recent restore points, and then try to disable/re-enable system restore - this part without success. When I check the system properties for System Restore, the System Restore button is greyed out. I've attached a screenshot of the screen for reference. I've checked the group policies to verify the System Restore is not disabled there.

Removing A Boot File From A Partition That Is NOT Being Used

Aug 24, 2009

I was having problems with VistaHP and thought that I could kill 2 birds with one stone by adding a new Hard Drive and reinstalling Windows VistaHP. For information purposes, the original HD was Partitioned into "C" (OS), "D" data files, "E" (Photos) and "F" Extra storage (for future use). In any event, I did not have the proper cables available so I REMOVED the original HD and placed the new HD in my system and installed VistaHP and Partitioned the new HD in to 4 Partitions also and installed all my software programs, data files, apps, ...... on the new HD.

Everything appeared to be fine and a couple of weeks later, I placed the orginal HD back in the system with the intentions of Re-Formatting the drive for additional stirage (and using the new HD as the Primary Drive). This went "semi-OK", I was able to reform and re-label most of the Partitions on the original HD except for the Partition that contained Vista and at the moment, when I go to My Computer I have Local Disk "C" (39.8GB free of 82.7GB), Old C Drive "D" (13.4MB free of 125MB), "G" Data Files (29.8GB free of 36.8GB), "H" Photos (181GB free of 194GB), "I" BU (82.5GB of 151GB), "P" Extra Space (352GB free of 352GB) and "Q" More Extra Space (45.4GB free of 95.3GB).

My objective / what I would like to do, is DELETE and / or Re-Format the "D" (Old C Drive) which I was able to get down to 125MB but as best as I can tell, the Drive contains the following file 125.5MB with 107.8MB Used and 17.7MB Free and the following folders:

$RECYCLE.BIN, BOOT, System Volume.
