View 5 Repliesit seems as though my CPU enjoys spinning up to 100% load. I'm not entirely sure why. It might be because I have an old CPU and motherboard (Athlon 64 3700+, which is, of course, single core and an Asus A8N-32 SLI Deluxe) but it never happened with XP Pro (unless I was doing something super intensive).
So, here's the deal: it sounds like something is spinning up but it's not my hard drives. Could it be the chip fan? It happens when I'm playing video games and, more recently, when I've been loading something even moderately graphics intense on the internets (I use Firefox 3.0.10, which has been crashing a bit lately, but that's not the issue here, hehe). Could it be the graphics card? Though I don't see why that would put a huge load on my CPU. (The card is an nVidia 8800 GT.)
There doesn't seem to be anyone one process that is causing this; the processes with the massive load change while whatever it is is spinning and the CPU is at 100% load.
I have 8 SATA drives (4 in a PCI Promise SATA controller and 4 in the motherboard controller) in my Vista Ultimate 64, and I would like to keep them spinned down most the time. I use power saving but only the PCI drives are shutting down after x minutes, the motherboard drives are still on. In windows XP worked fine. I also noticed that when I delete a file, the drives spin up again. Could be any windows service interfering? I have all the hardware drivers well updated.

One is Spinning Hat software and abcPager, that are apparently the source of a problem of which I am not familiar with. Not only do I not know the the problem itself, but Spinning Hat software and abcPager are alien to me. I have done a search for these two names with zero results.

About a month ago my computer started crashing regularly and eventually i couldn't even log on after the welcome screen. it just sat there spinning and would eventually freeze. After reading a few forums i found a post which said to do a system recovery but i don't have a disk and then i found something that said i need to make a disk but can't for the life of me fugure out how to do that.
i tried 'last known good configuration' and finally passed the welcome screen to find that i had a fake security centre virus. I installed Norton 360 and it got rid of the virus but the computer still crashes regularly. I also ran a memory diagnostic and that was okay. I checked details in the event viewer and the only critical one was:...

Someone gave me a solution to this but it wasn't temporary. Everytime i was shutting down the pc, it was doing the same thing when i was restarting. Now it happens the same thing even when i shut it down. So everytime i shut down/restart my pc i have to wait till windows shuts down and then press the button on my case.

I need to ensure that these users do not disable User Account Control on their machines as I am sure they will be tempted to do so. Is there a way I can do this (perhaps through Group Policy)?
I found several UAC-related settings and enforced them, but nothing stops them from disabling it entirely. Is there anything I can do besides the obvious choice of not granting them Administrative privileges?

I have an annoying problem. I use my Vista PC for image editing and organization. I browse to these files quite often, and they are arranged in a very hierarchical directory structure with folders on top of folders to keep everything nice and neat.
Many times, I will need to perform an edit that I require assistance from the internet on. So I fireup my trusty browser, drop down what I expect to be the internet browsing history to visit a trusty resource that I recently visited, only to find that my @#%@^%ing local browsing history has almost completely populated this list. View 8 Replies View RelatedI cannot work out how to prevent Vista from logging the user out after a period on no activity. I have set power control to Never and screen saver to none. It's the logout that is still happening, not screen saver or power down. I am remote-controlling a Vista Home Basic 32 machine from an XP sp2 machine (Home: no Remote Admin). I am using LogMeIn to do this. Vista machine does not seem to recognise my activities, so that every few minutes it logs me out. This also disconnects the remote connection (and actually disconnected _my_ VOIP phone connection at the same time in a couple of instances! It did not just hang me up. I lost the dial tone and had to cycle my router). Also when the remote Vista user logs back in (I can't do it because I am now disconnected) their network and internet connection has to reconnect all over again.

Windows Vista won't start up anymore. Various problems occur during the start up that prevent it from starting up. It occurred around 3pm or 4pm today when i was just on the internet and talking with my friend on MSN and then BAM! BSOD! The PC rebooted itself and came back up, but then it began giving me a looping 'windows explorer.exe has stopped working' error. So I rebooted again.
I tried Last known good configuration and it didn't work. Gives me a flashing BSOD and the PC restarts itself. Attempts to boot into normal mode sometimes brings BSOD and sometimes just stays black before the circular Windows vista logo that should appear.......

View 7 Replies View RelatedI installed SRS Audio Soundbox on my HP laptop running vista ultimate with Realtek HD audio. It installed a audio device of its own, which I can select under control panel->sound. SRS Soundbox panel is set to start with windows. But I only want to use SRS to process audio coming out of Zoom-Player, so I have setup Zoom Player to use this audio device instead of default Realtek. My problem is that everytime laptop restarts or wakes from sleep (essentially everytime SRS's control panel starts), SRS makes itself the default audio device, which I have to go and change back to Realtek. Is there a way I could lock-up the default device, so it wouldn't change?? or do something else so that Realtek stays the default audio device.

View 5 Replies View RelatedToday I had a need to find some questions and responses that I'd sent to and received from, some of the MS newsgroups (including this one). It seems that Vista Mail has auto-magically deleted a large number of old newsgroup messages that I had previously downloaded to my machine, so I've lost that history. I've been through all the dialog boxes I could find and I cannot find any "delete downloaded news messages after ...." option. Odder still, if I use the Mail search tool to find messages, it finds some.
If I then go back to the message viewer, that gets refreshed and the search "hits" disappear from the found items dialog. Are old messages actually being deleted from the MS servers somewhere and my local cache is then being kept up to date by deleting the old messages? So the question is, "How do I prevent Vista Mail from deleting old newsgroup messages?".
For various reasons I turned off UAC. Is there a way I can prevent that bubble in the lower right from warning me constantly?

How can I prevent WMP11 from assigning album tags to these mp3 and downloading album art. I have every possible check box involved in media updating unchecked. Among my 20 or so genre folders, WMP only seems to modify the files in a few of the folders. The artist and title tags are correct so it looks like WMP is trying to add missing information. Is there a registry hack that essentially turns off the ability of WMP to do any file modification? I've tried deleting the database and rescanning the library. My only option right now is to simply not start WMP.

If so, will this prevent me from doing a recovery as the PC was originally set up for? Are there any hidden traps? Is there a GOOD site/page that describes the operation?
