Message The Screen Says Upgrade Checking Has Been Disabled

May 9, 2008

A month back I bought a Dell Latitude D630 with XP Pro installed. After seeing that Vista SP1 solved a bunch of problems with Vista I decided I want to go with Vista on my laptop. I bought the full version of Vista Business from the Windows Marketplace. Microsoft says (unless I misunderstood) that there is a valid upgrade path from XP Pro SP2 to Vista Business. I am starting the install from the disk and from within Windows. The Upgrade Advisor says I am ready to go. But...When I enter my key and move forward upgrading is grayed out and is unavailable. There is a message on the screen that says upgrade checking has been disabled.

Home Premium To Ultimate - Upgrade Is Disabled

Apr 6, 2008

I've recently needed to reformat my hard drive due to a problem, when I originally received my computer it came with Home Premium which I had upgraded to Ultimate. I have reinstalled Home Premium and have all my programs reinstalled and setup as they should be. Now when I try to reinstall the Ultimate version, whether from the boot cd or from within Home Premium I get the message that 'upgrade is disabled'. I was led to believe
that I could upgrade from Home Premium to Ultimate. I do not remember if I ran into this problem when I first purchased the Ultimate software because it was installed on the computer prior to any software installations.

Restart: Get Blue Screen Message

Apr 18, 2009

I shut down my computer during a windows update and now every time I restart I get a blue screen message that lasts for about a second and then my computer restarts itself again. It does this every time. I'm operating in safe mode right now. I'm sorry if this sounds vague, I'm not very good with computer terms and stuff, but I'll give more details if I need to.

Greeted Message After POST Screen: GRUB

Jun 14, 2008

Whenever I start my PC, I get greeted with a message after the POST screen, in the standard DOS-type text, simply saying "GRUB" (or "GRUB GRUB"). From here, the PC becomes unresponsive, and I can only turn it off. I believe this is linked to the Grub Boot Loader I once had installed on my secondary hard drive which was installed in a different PC. However, it has only been rearing its head over the last couple of days.

I have tried the "bootrec" command from the Vista disc with the /fixmbr, /fixboot and /rebuildbcd commands. However, this has not provided me with a permanent fix. The /rebuildbcd and /scanos arguments return a message saying it found no compatible Vista installations. Vista will start with no problems, however, provided the Vista install disc is in the DVD drive. I don't need to "press any key to boot from the DVD", just having it in the drive is perfectly sufficient.

Just recently I've been having some troubles with my hard drive failing, which may or may not be related. (The first paragraph of the first post is probably the most relevant): Vista won't start. Note that I have also done a full system scan using NOD32, which found no problems. I am completely confused about this problem; I'm even more confused, though, about how the problem arose in the first place.

I am wondering if this is legitimate software, or if the firewall is trying to block a rogue program that might harm my PC.

Blank Screen After Upgrade To 4GB RAM

Sep 18, 2009

I had 2.5GB of RAM in HP laptop. OS - vista home premium service pack2.

The system works fine.

I upgraded to 4GB RAM(2*2GB). when upgraded to 4GB in bios able to see as ~3.33GB of RAM. I am able to see microsoft progress bar also, but after that the screen is blank and able to hear windows logon sound but no display. The screen is black.

When installed only the new 2GB of RAM the system work fine. So no problem with the new 2GB also. But with 4GB the screen is blank. I have nvidia GeForce 7400 graphics card. Is there any configuration need to be done in vista before installing 4GB of RAM?

Cannot Change Screen Resolution After Upgrade From XP

Mar 23, 2008

I have just upgraded my PC to Vista from XP and purchased a new monitor, capable of supporting 1440 x 900 resolution. Problem is that the screen resolution cannot be changed and is fixed at 640 x 480. I've tried via the settings in the control panel but I cannot drag the mouse on the slider bar from low to high resolution.

The online help suggests I may have an inadequate video card, Does anyone know how I can check this? What card do I have now and what do I need? Or is there another solution?

Re-install Upgrade Can Blue Screen

Mar 23, 2008

So my HP started acting up, it's dual boot XP/Vista. I used the boot recovery dvd's from HP to attempt to re-install XP. It caused a blue screen, and messed up the boot sector so I can't now get to Vista either. So after a few hours I finally gave up trying to save the data and went for a full recovery (reformat-install XP clean) that toolead to a blue screen So I finally get Vista to install fresh (wouldn't allow me to install w/my code, said I had to be in windows to use the code.) So I install Visa w/o a code, go to activate and says this had to be an upgrade! technally it still is! So I go to try to find an e-mail or ph for MS and they say $59 to talk to someone! That is BS! If I could get the boot recovery to work I'd go back to XP and never look at vista again! Is there anyway I'm going to be able to save this machine? I'm going to try to contact HP, but have little faith as it's over a year old now, but I'm sure they'd gladly sell me a boot dvd! I relize the first message was in the wrong group.

Checking Newsgroups

Oct 1, 2009

(Running Vista Ultimate 64-bit, SP-2, IE-7, WM-6, classic mode, dial-up.)

BACKGROUND: Lately I've noticed that when I check my email Windows Mail seems to be stopped/stuck while checking a newsgroup for new messages. I've discovered that it may be in that mode (checking a particular newsgroup) for over an hour. I solve the problem at the time by clicking stop, and then it checks for messages and I find a number ofmessages sent over the previous hour or more.

I know of the setting to determine how often to check my server for email. Is there another setting somewhere that determines how often the newsgroups are checked? I'd be
happy to have the newsgroups checked only when I open a newsgroup, but I don't know how to do that.

Spell Checking Other Than MS Office?

Is there any free way to spellcheck anywhere other than MS Office?

Windows XPSP3 Upgrade Fails, Blue Screen

May 19, 2008

I have Windows XP SP3 installed and operational. I have tried recently to complete an upgrade to Vista Pro with no success. I get to 59% completion on the last step at which point the computer reboots, goes to a blue screen and then resets back to Windows XP. Prior to that, everything appears to progress normally. I am wanting to do an upgrade because of the software that I want to carry over into the Vista environment (note: none of the software is identified in the Upgrade process as problematic software).

I am booting in normal mode with only Microsoft applications in the startup. I do have a Creative soundcard but have not loaded the software during startup (I did not uninstall the driver yet). I previously upgraded to Vista from SP2 but had to revert back for other reasons. Since then, the only change was to upgrade XP to SP3 and other Windows SW udpates.

Would like to hear about others' experiences and what other suggestions you might have so that I can complete the upgrade. Microsoft Technical support is unhelpful as they keep trying to get me to do a fresh install (the easy out!!!) instead of helping me complete the upgrade. Are they special commands I can issue in a RUN command that will facilitate a successful upgrade?

This Language Is No Longer Available For Spell Checking

When I clicked internet options is shows the usual tabs...General, Security, Privacy, Content etc. etc. On the General Tab there is a Language button below "appearences" but ENGLISH is already listed. Even deleating English and re-entering english as the language does not even highlight the apply button and does not fix the problem. No wonder people roll their eyes when I tell them I use Vista Home Premium.

Memory Upgrade: Install Additional 2Gb, I Get A Blue-screen Every Time I Boot

Windows Update Error 8024402C While Checking For Updates

Nov 3, 2008

The last two weeks have been the worst in my life: I just got a new DELL XPS M1530 with VISTA HOME PREMIUM. How I wish I had not...The following is a copy of the logbook of my problems. Some of you may find my workarounds useful. I got most of the tips from random googling. As it took a while to fix each problem, I thought I should summarize some of the tricks, for reference. The following outlines all the steps I followed since getting the new machine two weeks ago......

Fix the following problem.

Windows Update error 8024402C

If you receive Windows Update error 8024402C while checking for updates, you might need to do one of the following: If the computer is connected to a network at work, contact a network administrator. You probably receive updates using Windows Server Update Services (WSUS), a service that enables network administrators to deploy and manage updates for all computers on a network. For more information about WSUS, go to the Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) website. If your computer is usually connected to a network at work (for example, if you use a mobile PC but you are currently using it at home or at another location), you probably receive updates using WSUS and can not receive updates by connecting directly to the Internet or to another network, such as a home network. To solve the problem, connect to the network at work and try checking for updates again, or contact a network administrator. If the computer is connected directly to the Internet or to a home network (and never connected to a network at work), you might need to set Internet Explorer to automatically detect local area network (LAN) settings so Windows Update can go online to obtain updates. To do this, follow the steps below.....
