Vista Home Premium on a Gateway Convertible Laptop(Tablet) I have all my power settings to "Never", never sleep, never turn off, etc. Yet I cannot delete the hiberfil.sys in the root directory. XP had an opt out feature for hibernate that would allow this file to be deleted. I guess MS feels we've gotten too stupid to make that determination for ourselves in Vista. Just another feature we can't choose to live without.
View 7 RepliesThe 1st problem is everytime I close my lid/turn off the power/click the sleep button to put my computer to sleep before I go to sleep myself at night, I always wake up and my computer is at the log in screen, but it has restarted without any settings I'm aware of making it restart. I then log into my computer and it says that "windows has recovered from an error causing it to shutdown" etc etc.
Then 2nd problem is whenever my computer does come back from sleep, which it does if it hasn't been asleep long, or whenever it is restarted in general...my monitor settings from my dual monitors changes. I have to go back into the properties tab and change it so I can drag my mouse from the left screen across to the right, and change which monitor is my main monitor. Sometimes my recycle bin icon even goes back to a different spot on the monitor.
I can't get my Vista 64 bit computer to turn of the monitor (after 10 minutes of no operation), and to turn to sleep mode (after 20 minutes) in power plan: high performance.Both functions are available when in power plan: balanced. But I want to computer to perform on it's best.Does anyone know what causes this and how to fix so in high performance the computer still can automatically turn off the monitor and go to sleep mode.

And not by just turning it off at the switch, I have to unplug it and then restart it. At that point I get this message: The last attempt to resume the system from its previous location failed. Attempt to resume again? And then I have two choices; continue with system restore, or delete restoration data and proceed to system boot menu. The second choice is the only one that works. Why is my computer going into a coma, and how can I fix it?
View 5 Replies View RelatedPower Scheme-Sleep Mode I use Vista on my Dell PC and have my power settings set to turn off my monitor in 15 minutes and my PC in 20 minutes (sleep mode). When my PC enters the Sleep mode, it only stays in that mode a short time, usually three or so minutes at the maximum, then it activates and my monitor turns on. Is this normal for this power option? I would expect my PC to stay in the Sleep
mode for a longer period of time, at least some of the time.
I have my Vista laptop (HP) hooked up to an external monitor, I have been using the sleep mode at night. The laptop is closed and on a shelf that is very hard to get to. I would like to shut it off at night. I can shut it off with the keyboard. Is there any way possibly software controlled to turn it back on? View 9 Replies View RelatedRunning Windows Vista Ultimate. Display turns off after about fifteen minutes regardless of whether I am actively using the computer or not. The only way to turn the display back on is to close and then open the lid. This disconnets me from AOL, so I have to sign back on again, and if I was emailing, I might lose my current email. Under Power Options, I have 'Turn off the display' set to Never for both On Battery and Plugged in. Under 'Put the computer to sleep' I have both On battery and Plugged in set to never. Nonetheless, the display still shuts off while I am working. What do I need to do to prevent the display from turning off at odd intervals?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI am embarrassed to ask it. Previously I had WindowsXP on my laptop - to turn it off you went to Start, Turn Off Computer. This laptop is using Vista, and I cannot find anything comparable. Last night I turned it off using the off-on button, so got the Windows did not shut off properly message when I turned it on; and I have a "thing" about leaving my computer on overnight. Also, is there a way of hiding all the command bars to "hide" like you can with the taskbar on the bottom?

View 7 Replies View RelatedI have an old-school program that creates its directory at a hard-corded directory in C's root (C:xxx). Now, I don't want to run it with administrative privileges, I changed the directory's security permissions to (everyone - full control) and make them inherited to all its sub-directories. The program reads & writes fine with existing files. But the program creates a c file inside its directory and tries to let a C compiler on a network drive compile it. That 92s when the problem comes in. It creates the c file all right, but the c compiler cannot read it (saying =93permission denied=94). If I turn UAC off, I don 92t get errors, but I don 92t want to turn it off.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI turned it off to install a program because it required the UAC to be off, not I try and turn it on by going Control Panel > User Accounts > Turn User Account Control on or off > Continue > then ticking the box and pressing OK. I pressed Turn User Account Control on or off > Continue and find that it is not ticked and UAC is NOT on. I keep ticking the box and going OK but it just doesn't turn on.

I press sleep it goes to sleep, then 2 seconds later it kicks back in and loads up again! The only thing i have changed since it was working was the video card (Geforce 8600GT).
I have done all the standard changes to keyboard/mouse, network adaptor, media sharing etc etc but still no joy!
