Dekstop Icon Alt 0160 Won't Delete
Jun 28, 2009I wanted to get rid of the text under my Desktop Icon so I used Alt 0160 to do it and made it invisible. It worked great but I later wanted to delete the folder and now it won't delete.

Power On/Off, Dekstop Freezing
Apr 11, 2009I have never been able to achieve a normal power off using the power switch, but had to use the options provided by Vista Home Premium. I am still having problems with dekstop freezing, and with frustration I pressed the power switch rapidly several times and to my surprise it shut itself down - legally. Nothing like the action you get by holding in the power switch for about 5 seconds.
Is my power switch now operating normally after being faulty for almost 2 years, or is it now faulty, providing a shutdown which should not be available?
Can't Get An Icon To Delete Off Of Desktop
Jan 30, 2010I didn't really want to start a new thread, but I'm too busy to look through to find a matching problem. I can't get an Icon to delete off of my desktop. The account is a standard account, so when I try to delete the icon, it asks for permission. So I type in the password and it says it deletes it, but it's still there. So I try to delete it from the Administrator account(which is the built in account), but it says I don't have permission to delete it. It's not a big problem, but it's just somewhat annoying.

Oct 2, 2008I have an icon on my desktop which refuses to get deleted. I have gone looked at various other posts and have tried to follow the steps..unfortunately none of them have helped me get rid of the sticky icon. the file name is RATATO~1.rm and i dont know how it was created.
* deleting in safe mode doesnt help.
* tried shedding the file wid mcafee...doesnt work.
* deleting from cmd prompt doesnt delete.
* have tried to remove the registry entry, there are various entries and am not able to figure out the exact entry.
When i try to delete, the delete program goes into an infinite loop. says " recycling 1 item..calculating time remaining" and gets stuck.
Could't Delete The Recycle Bin Icon
Nov 25, 2008I could not possibly delete the Recycle Bin icon from screen because there was no "delete" option. Now, two friends contacted me frantically because they could not find the icon...obviously, they had right-clicked and then clicked the "delete" option instead of "empty" option.

Jul 25, 2009I use Vista home premium but I've only had it for a few days. Anyway, the problem is that my recycling bin automatically deletes any files I put into it so I tried to change he setting but when the property window for it pops up the only thing I can change is to "display delete confirmation dialog". So I attempted to delete it and make another icon using the personalize trick but the recycling bin icon won't delete. Also, I can't make new folders using the right click. Under NEW is empty and nothing else. I'm confused as to why this happens.

Delete The Icon And Create A New One. No Change
Mar 10, 2010My desktop shortcuts with the program Icons have a white/windows shield over them. I can see the actual Icon behind the white. This occurred after I uninstalled an Adobe program Photoshop Elements 8.0 What I have tried:
1. Delete the icon and create a new one. No change.
2. Change icon in properties. No change the new one appears with the covering.
3. System Restore to an earlier point. No change all the desktop icons are covered over.

Mar 27, 2009sent laptop to service center for warrenty repair to cover. repair center updated the bios (bios launcher downloaded to desktop). when i got machine home i noticed an adminstrative tools icon now on my desktop. i am unable to do anything with this icon. when right clicked i get no option to delete or to open properities. i have tried dragging and dropping,moving, and deleting. i cannot move it off the desktop. control pannel still has the administrative icon in it and it works. the icon on the desktop works also. hovvever desktop is no place for admin. tools. i have also tried to delete
from safe mode without any success.
Cyberlink Icon, Delete The Shortcut
May 15, 2010A registered version of Cyberlink Power2Go came with my laptop. I only use it occasionally but do not wish to uninstall it. I try to keep my desktop free of clutter and the program had an icon ever since my first boot. I delete the shortcut and it disappears as with any other program, into the recycle bin. When I next boot the PC the icon has recreated itsself.

Well, I don't want much but I hope there's a delete icon because I delete files often. That was possible on Windows XP, but it looks like I have no control over what is being displayed on Windows Vista. Can't I display "delete" or "property" icon instead of those stupid "play all" and "burn" icons?

May 15, 2010PC: HP Windows Media Center PC m8200n; Monitor HP w1907. November 2007. OS: Windows Vista Home Premium. HP: Deskjet F4180. So I noticed that the printer icon for my printer became all white, IE a corrupted icon. So I went online and found information on how to refresh your icon folder. That didn't do anything. So I thought I'd uninstall and reinstall.
I have tried to reinstall my HP software from disc, and I get a 'new PSSWCORE.msi' file. I see the file on the install disc, yet it won't install. 'Network resource is unavailable.'
Now I cannot uninstall it. On my Add/Remove I see:
HP Customer Participation Program 9.0
HP All In One Software 9.0
HP Imaging device Functions 9.0
HP On-Screen Cap/Num/Scroll Lock Indicator
HP Photosmart Essential
HP Update
How can I get these off my PC, and reinstall cleanly so I can use my rinter/scanner again?
Start Menu Icon But Displays A Generic Icon
Apr 19, 2008I installed new software and pinned the executable to the start menu. But, Vista displays a generic icon in the start menu for this program. All other programs pinned to the start menu display the correct icon. Any way to get Vista to dispaly the proper icon for this program??

Jun 10, 2009Here's a problem that started around a week ago.
I have Windows Vista Home Premium
At startup, everything loads fine. The desktop and all my icons are there.
However, there is a red X over my network icon on the task bar.
I have to wait at least three minutes for the x to disappear before I can access the Internet.
I talked to my ISP provider and they reset my router. The problem still exists. The provider said the problem is on my end, not theirs.
I tried everything I could think of including cleaning and editing the registry and the problem persists.
Don't know where else to turn

Dec 23, 2009My pc was working fine after the updates that i did the otherday and it got powered off manually from my friend today and I went to turn it on today and it comes to the loading bar and doesnt show the vista icon its a black page with the green bars loading with microsoft corp underneath them. I left it there for hours and it wont go past that. I cant even put it in safe mode because it goes to load for it and says please wait but doesnt change.

Mar 23, 2008I accidentally deleted my desktop file and it asked me something about duplication. My fingers moved to fast and i agreed. Now I have two of the same icons on my desktop. When I try to delete one of the icons, either they will both go away or one will stay there and not work. Sometimes I can get it to only have 1 icons but once I install a new program, it will double the icons again. I added a desktop file again to "user" file and there is also a "Public Desktop" in the public file. This is very annoying and I would like to be able to put icons on my desktop without the duplication. How do I fix this? This situation is really hard to explain so I hope someone will have an idea of how to fix it besides reinstalling windows.

After a while, for no apparent reason, the "large" desktop icons setting produces some smaller ones also. Specifically it seems to be web short cuts. Some are large but some are much smaller, ie 2 icons which are identical (both web shortcuts) are randomly different sizes.

Jun 26, 2009I'm running Vista home premium and IE8. I connect to the internet with dial-up. When I'm connected the computer icon in the task bar has a red X on it. If I place the cursor on the icon it says "not Connected". If I right click on the icon and select connect to network the window comes up and shows my connection and states that I'm connected with the option button to disconnect. Why does my system think I'm not connected. Also before when I would close IE I would receive a window asking if I want to disconnect. I no longer get that window either. Having dial-up this is a pain do to the phone line being tied up and sometimes not knowing it.

Dec 8, 2008From time to time, when I go to the Control Panel (for example), my icons will be really big, other times, they will be small, some other times, they will be in Detail mode... why is that? Just yesterday I went to the control panel to uninstall something and the icons were in like medium icon view, today the whole page looks weird (kinda like XP view)... see for yourself in the ICONS 01 image. Usually, the view I have for almost everything is in ICONS 02 image. Why is this happening and how do I make it stop or at least, set it to how I want it? It is driving me mad because it feels like a virus/worm is doing this... I hate to think I have a ghost on my rig.
