Since having Vista, I always had UAC off. Recently, I tested it in quiet mode and didn't like it. After turning UAC off, I'm getting the security icon in the corner of some of my desktop shortcuts now: How can I get rid of these?

PC: HP Windows Media Center PC m8200n; Monitor HP w1907. November 2007. OS: Windows Vista Home Premium. HP: Deskjet F4180. So I noticed that the printer icon for my printer became all white, IE a corrupted icon. So I went online and found information on how to refresh your icon folder. That didn't do anything. So I thought I'd uninstall and reinstall.
I have tried to reinstall my HP software from disc, and I get a 'new PSSWCORE.msi' file. I see the file on the install disc, yet it won't install. 'Network resource is unavailable.'
Now I cannot uninstall it. On my Add/Remove I see:
HP Customer Participation Program 9.0
HP All In One Software 9.0
HP Imaging device Functions 9.0
HP On-Screen Cap/Num/Scroll Lock Indicator
HP Photosmart Essential
HP Update
How can I get these off my PC, and reinstall cleanly so I can use my rinter/scanner again?
I installed new software and pinned the executable to the start menu. But, Vista displays a generic icon in the start menu for this program. All other programs pinned to the start menu display the correct icon. Any way to get Vista to dispaly the proper icon for this program??

View 8 Replies View RelatedToday I switched on Windows Defender(for the first time)and ran a quick scan which was fine, but I've noticed a new icon in the systems tray with a green circle and a tick in it.When I hover the pointer over it, it says "Safely Remove Hardware".I've looked everywhere for an explanation but can't find any info anywhere. I have Windows Vista Home Premium
At startup, everything loads fine. The desktop and all my icons are there.
However, there is a red X over my network icon on the task bar.
I have to wait at least three minutes for the x to disappear before I can access the Internet.
I talked to my ISP provider and they reset my router. The problem still exists. The provider said the problem is on my end, not theirs.
I tried everything I could think of including cleaning and editing the registry and the problem persists.
Don't know where else to turn
This is kind of trivial but when I sign in there is always a flower. How can I change that?
View 5 Replies View RelatedMy pc was working fine after the updates that i did the otherday and it got powered off manually from my friend today and I went to turn it on today and it comes to the loading bar and doesnt show the vista icon its a black page with the green bars loading with microsoft corp underneath them. I left it there for hours and it wont go past that. I cant even put it in safe mode because it goes to load for it and says please wait but doesnt change.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI accidentally deleted my desktop file and it asked me something about duplication. My fingers moved to fast and i agreed. Now I have two of the same icons on my desktop. When I try to delete one of the icons, either they will both go away or one will stay there and not work. Sometimes I can get it to only have 1 icons but once I install a new program, it will double the icons again. I added a desktop file again to "user" file and there is also a "Public Desktop" in the public file. This is very annoying and I would like to be able to put icons on my desktop without the duplication. How do I fix this? This situation is really hard to explain so I hope someone will have an idea of how to fix it besides reinstalling windows.

After a while, for no apparent reason, the "large" desktop icons setting produces some smaller ones also. Specifically it seems to be web short cuts. Some are large but some are much smaller, ie 2 icons which are identical (both web shortcuts) are randomly different sizes.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm running Vista home premium and IE8. I connect to the internet with dial-up. When I'm connected the computer icon in the task bar has a red X on it. If I place the cursor on the icon it says "not Connected". If I right click on the icon and select connect to network the window comes up and shows my connection and states that I'm connected with the option button to disconnect. Why does my system think I'm not connected. Also before when I would close IE I would receive a window asking if I want to disconnect. I no longer get that window either. Having dial-up this is a pain do to the phone line being tied up and sometimes not knowing it.

View 4 Replies View RelatedFrom time to time, when I go to the Control Panel (for example), my icons will be really big, other times, they will be small, some other times, they will be in Detail mode... why is that? Just yesterday I went to the control panel to uninstall something and the icons were in like medium icon view, today the whole page looks weird (kinda like XP view)... see for yourself in the ICONS 01 image. Usually, the view I have for almost everything is in ICONS 02 image. Why is this happening and how do I make it stop or at least, set it to how I want it? Solway's says a menu option will be added to save layout but it is not there and desktop shock was almost as useless and my anti virus said it was a keylogger. Anyone know a utility for this that actually works with Vista (64)?
I need this because everytime I install new vid card drivers it scrambles my icon and I have to put all of them back which takes a few minutes but if I can find a utility to do this it would be nice.
I am not certain, but I suspect either Vongo or Spybot2009 was responsible for one icon-(minimize all windows) disappearance from Quick launch at taskbar. Now I have to right click taskbar for "show the desktop" option to minimize all windows. Thanks God the "switch between windows" icon stayed put.
How do I restore the missing icon?
I didn't really want to start a new thread, but I'm too busy to look through to find a matching problem. I can't get an Icon to delete off of my desktop. The account is a standard account, so when I try to delete the icon, it asks for permission. So I type in the password and it says it deletes it, but it's still there. So I try to delete it from the Administrator account(which is the built in account), but it says I don't have permission to delete it. It's not a big problem, but it's just somewhat annoying.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI've run across a couple of applications (Avira Premium Security Suite, Spyware Terminator) that, despite choosing the "Always Hide" option for their tray icon, every time the computer reboots, they default back to "Hide When Inactive." Sure, it's a minor issue to set them back to "Always Hide" when I reboot, but is there some sort of tweak somewhere that will force these applications to remember the "Always Hide" setting, instead of defaulting back to "Hide When Inactive?"

But nevermind the last two, I will deal with them myself. What bothers me is that I cannot find IconCache.db nowhere on C: in order to delete it and reset the icon cache as described here, on vistax64.com. View 8 Replies View RelatedI have a fairly new dell laptop inspiron 1720 with wireless internet connection. A couple of days ago I noticed the little network icon on the bottom right of the task bar had a strange little blue blob on it. If I hold the mouse over it, it says 'you are currently not connected to any networks'. If I right click and then click 'connect to a network', that box shows that I am indeed connected and to the proper network. When I first start my laptop the small network icon says that I am connected to the proper network but 'local access only', and after a few seconds that goes away and I get the above message.
I tried going into the 'connect to a network' box and disconnecting the proper network, then reconnecting but that did nothing. I am able to access the internet, my email and everything else. I did nothing new to my laptop, no programs or anything. This is just anannoying little bug that I would like to fix if anyone knows how.
Since installing IE8 RTM in Vista SP1 x86 I've been having some problems with internet shortcut icons not displaying correctly on my desktop. I've tried deleting and redoing them, tried using AM Deadlink to refresh my Favourites icons to no avail. They show normally in Favourites but show as a smaller version within a white frame on the desktop. This doesn't seem to effect all of them, just some.
I've attached two thumbnails to illustrate what I mean. The first one is the Canada Post item in Favourites and the second one is the same shortcut on the desktop. As you can see there there's another one doing the same thing for Newegg.ca. I think I am right in saying that it's not a case of rebuilding the system icon cache as that only effects system icons, am I right? FYI desktop resolution is 1680 x 1050 and I have the desktop icon size set to Classic.
On both my Windows 2000 Pro system, and on my XP Home edition, there is an icon library under C: system32progman.exe
On my Vista Ultimate, 64-bit, I cannot find that collection of icons. I can find a nice collection at C:system32shell32.dll but it does not contain the specific icons I'm seeking.
Are there other icon libraries "hidden" in Vista which I can access and then look for my favorite icons?
