About two years ago, I purchased Microsoft Home and Student 2007 along with Microsoft Outlook 2007 for my Dell computer running Windows Vista Home Premium (32 bit). Can anyone tell me how much it would cost to upgrade to Version 2010 for these programs? I am a single user, at home small office - would such an upgrade yield any significant benefits?

I intend to buy Windows 7 when it becomes available and wish to minimize my system upgrade problems as much as possible. Based on my understanding I would have to do a complete harddrive erase to install Win 7 and then reinstall all my applications. If possible and practical I'd like to upgrade XP to Vista and then Vista to Windows 7. My question am I likely to have problems going from a current up to date version of XP to a 2+ year old version of Vista which would require many updates to bring up to the current level?.

View 9 Replies View RelatedLast year I bought the 64bit Upgrade version of Vista Ultimate. my mission critical software was incompatible with Vista and I had to downgrade back to XP. I anticipate that the vendor will release a version compatible with 64bit Vista in the next year. But by then I will probably build a new system. My question: With a new XP license on a new system can I then use that "Upgrade" version of Vista that I never used or am I forced to buy a new licensed copy of Vista?

First up - this is a dumb way to do stuff. I only did it because I thought Vista would install as XP did (i.e. I'd just need to drop my XP CD in the drive during the installation. I was wrong. Vista upgrades can only be done from inside a previous OS.). I used the XP CD to reformat all of my partitions. I then put XP onto a partition I later planned to use for my page file. I did a default install of XP until I could boot into it, and then (without activating it) dropped the Vista DVD into the drive. I used my keycode there (an upgrade one), and it accepted it. I then directed it to install Vista on the primary partition, so I had a clean install.
Cue several reboots. I then had a clean copy of Vista, and an old copy of XP, which I could reach via a dualboot menu shown at boot time. This was no good to me, I have no use for XP, so I rebooted from the XP CD, and reformatted the partition with XP on. This removed the dual boot screen, and by a bit of BIOS jiggery pokery to make my boot devices order floppy, DVD, Vista partition I was all sorted. I waited a few days before activating just to make sure it was stable, and it has been so far!
I have a machine with Vista Home Basic sp2. I'm gonna give it to my grand daughter for Christmas and decided that I wanted to give it to her with Home Premium. My son had a copy of Vista Home Premium that he bought way back when it first came out -- before any service pack releases -- for a custom build that has long since been parted out. I tried to use that disk to upgrade from but it grays out the upgrade option because the version of Windows that I am trying to upgrade is newer than the one I am upgrading from. Since Home Premium is super to Home Basic I assume that the error is coming from the service pack difference.

When I try to install the version 8.5 (from the ATI site) nothing happens. 1) What happens if my computer crashes and I am told I have to reformat the hard drive and re-install Windows? Am I forced to buy a new license?
2) What if I want to have a backup hard drive, or upgrade my existing hard drive to a bigger one? If it's the same computer and only the hard drive is upgraded or a second one added, does that mandate a new license?

I took ultimate because it was the only version i could find (in my area anyway) that had a 64bit version in the box. But i don't want the media center, the high definition, and all the multimedia stuff. All of these ultimate "extras" are of no use whatsover to me. So my question is basically can i install the Business version with my ultimate key ? (is it "downwards" compatible in a way ?). I don't understand why ultimate is the only one with 64bit in the box. It doesn't make sense to me. It would have been much more logical for the Business version to be the one with 64bit in the box.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI have a Samsung netbook with Windows 7 starter edition, 250GB HD and 1MB of RAM. I purchased it with a trial version of Office Home and Student which has expired. I am a public sector employee which entitles me to a discount on Microsoft Office Professional 2010 which I have downloaded and installed after unistalling Home and Student 2007 using the Programs and Features in Control Panel.
Now, when I open Excel 2010, if I make a new file and save it, it works fine. But when I try to open an Excel file from Office 2007 or 2003, it will open but if I try to change the file or save it as an Office 2010 file, excel stops working and shuts down. Windows has no solutions to this problem. I have checked for updates, but all that windows update offers are updates for the 2007 version of Office.
I'm new at this so sorry if this has already been posted and answered. Basically I was hacked by vista antispyware 2010 a couple of times and its really messed up my laptop. I got it to go away by using safe mode then the nrmal mode but I'm sure it's still there. It's made "open with" come up everytime i use a program and grayed out the default option. It won't let me use anything but internet explorer giving me the message "this file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the set associations control panel." I tried to attempt a system restore but "open with" comes up and i dont know which program to use for this.

It has no stationery at all & the only wizard I've found thus far is the envelope wizard. Office 2007 was bad enough with its plethora of already-written forms and hardly any decent smart-looking templates for business or personal letters, but this one has none at all, meaning not even one.
Generally I see little difference from Office 2007 except a much plainer "look". Which isn't always a good thing. Perhaps I'm being impatient. I only installed it 5 minutes ago but do NOT like it, sorry!!

I just uninstalled BitDefender Internet Security 2009 in order to upgrade to BDIS 2010. I used their uninstall tool, rebooted, then rebooted again choosing a clean boot so I could install BDIS 2010. When I got to the end it wouldn't let me activate. The message was "activation failed because no internet connectioin was detected. Please connect and try again." Now BD says they are aware of the problem and are working on it.
However, since I installed BDIS 2010 a lot of other things have stopped working. Windows Explorer, my snipping tool, when I try to take a screen shot and paste it into paint it says "information on the clip board can't be inserted into paint." I'm also continuously getting the message that IE8 is not working and is being shut down by DEP. I don't know what else might not be working. BitDefender, naturally, has turned off their chat support. Does anyone know what could be causing all this stuff not to work?

My NIS 2010 runs out in 15 days, and instead of paying them $60 for another year I'm wondering if it's safe enough to just use MSE and the built in firewall.I never had any complaints with norton, it worked great, never noticed it at all, but I just can't justify spending $60 for something is MSE is at least or even almost as good.I haven't seen many independent tests of MSE,while I know that Norton is one of the best at detection and removal.

A Visa Internet security 2010 window popups, where Firewall and Malware are off and it tells me that I have to buy a subscription to get rid of the problem. I'm using the free Open Office program - word processing mostly at this time. Is there anything in the list below that is of importance? I only have a basic PC with DVD player for movies, etc. No scanner, printer or fax. Not even external hard drive or usb flash drive. Otherwise, I understand that I can just choose to hide the updates, so it will not keep reminding me. Also, I choose to keep my OS w/ Srvce pk 1 and MS IE version 7 for as long as I'll be able to. I had too many probs with Srvce pk 2 and MS IE version 8. Your opinion, if any, is welcome.......

It starts to load up OK, put in the key number in than next step is. To pick custom install or upgrade install, but upgrade choice is grey out. It is disable from using the upgrade choice, I want to choose to pick. I did not purchase Windows Ultimate through Acer anytime upgrade option. It was a store bought software it was cheaper than Acer price they offer. What is the problem with installing Ultimate with Acer computer?
