Mar 23, 2008We have two computers. I want to copy my sent messages from computer 1 and download on computer 2 (and visa versa). I am elderly and advise needs to be simple.

Jun 16, 2008I recently installed Office Home & Student on a new machine with Vista and found that I can no longer copy an Excel chart and past it in the message space in Mail. I could do this with no problem using Office 2002 - XP and Vista. Is the problem with Vista or with Office 2007? I have already changed the registry to allow direct e-mail from Word and Excel to Mail (by-passing the requirement to have Outlook), but this doesn't seem to be related to that silly feature.

Nov 3, 2008I want to say that all my drivers are updates and windows is updated as well. This is also valid for any other computers on the network. My computer runs vista home premium 64 bit, the other computers on the network run home premium 32 bit. We have a gbit network through a d-link router (dir655) which has never given us any problems. We have the d-link because I couldn't find any other router at the time which supported a glass fibre connection at the speed we have (50 mbit synchronous) and which also offered a 1 gbit home networking solution (wired) while also offering the possibility of using it with the occasional wifi device (such as my archos 605 media player).
my first annoyance has to do with the network. SP1 made it better, but I'm still annoyed. When I copy files from one computer to the other, the file transfer goes at varrying speeds. The transfer speed seems to depend on one thing and one thing only, and that is on whether the other computer is being used at all. If the other computer is idle (so not even the mouse is moved, there is no user input at all), transfer speeds are between 55 and 70 mb per second. Which is good, I like this. When there is any kind of activity on the other computer, whether this is typing, using the mouse or any such thing (user initiated I mean.... a virus scan doesn't seem to affect the transfer speed) the transfer speeds drop down to a max of about 18 mb per second. When any type of media player is on, even when paused, it drops down further to between 13 and 15 mb per second. When that media player is windows media player, the transfer speed is usually a bit lower still.
I simply do not understand why this is. The transfer speeds with no activity at all show that there is a possibility of achieving these speeds... the network is not used when someone moves their mouse, so why can't I use the full extent of the network when someone is using their mouse, or typing something in word? Also, I know that a media player automatically reserves bandwidth for streaming, but going from a max of 70 mb/s to 15 mb/s seems a bit much to me for streaming purposes. I would also have thought that MS could make their media player a bit smarter... I mean, how hard can it be for them to disable the bandwidth reserving when someone is playing a local file?......
Cannot Copy File From Computer On Intranet
Jun 25, 2009Since June 2008, I have had a Windows 2000 system connected to a Vista system thru a router. I have several shares defined on the Windows 2000 system. No shares are defined on the Vista system. On 28 April 2009, I replaced NIS 2008 with KIS 2008 on the Vista system. On 23 June 2009, I noticed that the Vista system could no longer COPY files from the Windows 2000 system to the Vista system, tho Vista could still open the files.
I know that, on 19/20 June 2009, the Vista system copied files from the Windows 2000 system. So something broke after that. As I recall, there was a Windows update installed on 23 June 2009. Perhaps, that update changed some settings?
Blue Screen Twice - Opening A Copy Of The Files Could Harm Your Computer
Apr 2, 2009I got a blue screen on the 1st day I was up and running with Windows Vista 64 (pre-loaded on my new HP Pavilion computer). Everything was working beautifully, I was very happy that it all went well and I had no major problems getting set up. Then out of the blue, nothing was going on, I went to the START menu and as soon as I touched the Start button it crashed into blue screen.

May 1, 2008My old Windows XP PC died months ago (motherboard problems) and so I took out the hard drive (which still functions fine) and put it in my new PC, but I can't seem to copy any of my files in the My Documents folder from the old drive to my newer larger drive. I've had this drive in here for the last several months and have had no problems writing other files to this 'older' drive (250 gig Maxtor 16mb cache, 7,200RPM drive (btw it's only a year old), but when I try to copy files to another drive I get the following error message: "You'll need to provide administrator permission to copy to this file." This only happens with files that are in the My Documents folder. My current login has administrator rights, so I'm thinking some how this has something to do with this drive being from a different computer's installation of XP.

Sep 30, 2009Before the computer actually came to the point of "shuting down just before it tried to load the o/s" it literrly kept shuting down on its own randomly for a week or so. Then the blue screen appeard with this error: 0x0000007BC , 0x84C5DBA0, 0x0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000 "Run CHKDSK /F and check for Hard Drive Corruption and then restart your computer"
Basically it's telling me the DRIVE is corruptet! Well, I plugged that SATA 2 HDD into my other computer (windows xp), detected it correctly and actually formated the drive and reinstalled XP on it without any types of problem. Does it still mean - SATA 2 is corrupted or broken!? How about the RAM then ... indeed, I did run the MemTest for 7 times and no errors were found. So the RAM are ok in this case, or am I wrong?! Maybe it's the PSU... ermmm no that cannot be 'cos the computer never shuts down, if I leave it run for (e.g 5 hours) and even if it's comes to "overheating" that cannot be the case eather, as its *again" never shuts down when you leave it run on the power.........

Jun 16, 2009When I reboot my computer through Windows the computer shuts down correctly, but then the monitor remains black and the bios starts beeping out the error code for "VGA not detected". Why would this be? I am forced to press the power button and wait from 5 to 10 minutes to reboot normally. (I'm using Windows Vista Ultimate x64, have an ASUS P6T Deluxe motherboard and a Gigabyte Geforce GTX 280. 800 watts ZION power supply) Is this a BIOS settings or GPU problem? Jul 29, 2009I have a Vista Laptop that needs to access a printer on an XP computer in my sister's law office. I'm having trouble trying to even have the XP computer show up consistently on my sister's computer. I can ping it every time from the command prompt. I have all firewalls unenabled on both computers. Identical user accounts on both systems. File and Print sharing set up on both. The Link Layer topology is present on the Vista computer. When the laptop sits for a while the XP computer will show up on the map; but, Vista comes up with an error message when I try to access the XP computer.
Beyond that, the map will lose the XP computer on occassion. The Vista computer can access the internet well enough through the router. At this point I can't install the printer on the Vista computer for not being able to access the XP computer from Vista. I've networked Vista computers before on XP networks, and this is the first time I've encountered this problem. Additional info; net view will not show xp computer. Workgroup name is the same for both XP and Vista computer. The restrict anonymous registry key on the XP computer is set at 1. Was originally set at 0. (Norton's Systemwork altered setting)
UAC Locked Me Out Of Computer, How To Salvage This Computer
Dec 11, 2009I have a problem: I have a Windows 7 computer that is part of a Domain. By using System Restore, Windows has managed to ruin the trust relationship with the domain. I use a domain logon and am the only administrator on the machine (the Local Administrator is disabled). I cannot log in normally, due to the trust relationship issue. If I disconnect the network cable while logging in, I can (cached credentials), however I cannot change any UAC-protected settings because if I enter my credentials into it, connected to the network or not, UAC will simply show an error "This operation requires elevation". Nothing I try will work.
I cannot disjoin the domain, because those controls are protected by UAC. Logging in from a remote machine using my credentials will give me "Access is denied". Resetting the computer account in AD has no effect. I cannot format and reinstall because this laptop does not boot from CD by default and requires me to install a program to change BIOS settings (don't ask, it's a Toshiba, the usual way is broken). I cannot install this program because I am faced with yet another UAC prompt. I cannot remove the harddrive because of the laptop's design. how to salvage this computer?
Computer To Computer Networking Not Working
Oct 27, 2009I have been searching far and wide for a solution to my networking problem. I have 2 computers that i connect directly to each other by ethernet cable. Both computers also connect to the internet via wifi. So, on each computer, I have my Wireless connection, and the 'unidentified network' link between the two computers. The problem is that the 'unidentified network' settings never save, so when ever i restart either of the computers, I have to make the unidentified network private again, and there is no way that i can see to actually save the unidentified network settings in a profile. Also, to prevent the computer to computer connection from broadcasting over the wifi connection, i have to disconnect the wireless from one of the computers. I have tried making the wifi a public network and the ethernet connection private, but it never seems to work. anyone out there know what i can do?

It's a older hard drive, a Seagate 80 gig IDE connector hard drive, so I went out and bought a external hard drive device bay -- you just put the hard drive into it and then plug it into a USB port on my computer. If I plug it in, all that happens is every 10 seconds I get a pop up a message saying: "You need to format the disk in Drive J before you can use it. Do you want to format it?" Of course I don't want to format it, I'd lose the data I'm trying to copy! If I click cancel it just keeps bugging me about it and I can't access the HD.

File Copy / LAN
Mar 23, 2008Having a new PC with Vista Business edition, 2gb ram, dual core 2mhz, I connected to my wireless LAN & found that file copy / transfers were appallingly slow. So much so that I had to use an external usb drive.
The same process is of no problem on my WinXp & Win2k PC's.
Am I missing something? other than that I dont seem to have any other
performance issues
(I have checked updates)
Are You Sure You Want To Copy This File Without It
May 28, 2008as you can see by the headline, i am having trouble with copying files to my mp3 player. I have done a search on this forum and found that someone last year had the same problem, but the problem wasn't solved for that person, so i thought to start a new thread. My problem started a couple of days ago, up until then everything was fine, i could copy files to my mp3 player with no problems, sometimes i would've got the messge 'Are you sure you want to copy this file without it's properties?', i'd press yes and it would copy the files ok. But now the same message comes up, and it doesnt copy the properties. I actually tried playing my mp3 player and it crashes (restarts), until i remove the file that doesnt have the properties. I know my drive is supposed to support NTFS, my mp3 player is fat32 format and it did copy files for me up until a few days ago.
